Honestly, that's something I find the most fascinating. When people really master a skill, not just chess, the fundamentals become so ingrained that they arrive as a gut feeling rather than a conscious thought. I notice how much Magnus says things like "I feel" or "I intuitively knew". A lot of my favorite instrumentalists and people who are highly skilled at some other hobbies I have speak similarly. Can only put time in and dream of reaching that level of mastery in something!

For those who get confused (like i did hahaha), the rule is about when you have a pawn you can promote and want to know if the opponent`s king can take that pawn, just imagine a diagonal to the end of the board in this way forming a square from that diagonal, if the opponent´s king is inside that square it means that that pawn can be taken otherwise if it´s outside of the square he can´t take it (Hopefully my explanation helps, please forgive me if I made grammar mistakes, my English is a work in progress hahaha) :)

Even if he didnt say what the rule actually is, I kinda got it anyway. Basically if he took the queen one move earlier the king would be taking the queen on the C file and be one square closer to H file and would be able to catch up with the pawn and take it as it became a queen, whereas now as he moved the queen back to B, the king was also in B file instead of C and had one square extra to move and not get to H file in time. I imagine this will be intuitive for most chess players at this level and not really having to remember the rule itself.

    • @paulkerrigan9857
      @paulkerrigan9857 3 роки тому +27

@@Johnsli Yes exactly. On the chess board there are the same number of squares vertically as diagonally; if a pawn has to move 5 spaces to become a Queen, and the king is 5 diagonal spaces away from its final spot, then the pawn can be taken.
So basically draw a square from your pawn’s position to where it can Queen. E.g. a 5x5 square. Is the king within that square? If yes, you’ll have to distract the King somehow, to get your pawn past.

the funny thing is, it's not complicated. just look at how many squares until the pawn reaches the end of the board, then make a square with that dimension to the left and to the right of the pawn, if the king is not in either square, the king cant catch the pawn

    • @clatzeo

My understanding is that Magnus wasn't talking about square rule, he was talking about using offense with pawns instead of chasing the opponent's pawn.
Like he didn't get he could do that instead of square thing, but still somehow did that in real games he'd played without realizing.

You draw a square from the pawn to where it promotes (in this case 6x6) and towards the file where the opposite king is. When its the pawns move: If their king is in that square, the pawn wont make it. If the king isnt in that square the pawn will make it and be able to promote.

The best part about this lesson is his humility in each potential position, and his frankness towards his opponent in the real position. He makes no arrogant claims, he also tacitly explains the nature of blitz games, honestly signalling that Grischuk would never find himself in that position - or make such a decision - with more time on the clock. The true lesson he buries inside his modest analysis of his own "Rule of the Square" understanding is that - as he puts it - nothing is absolute.

I agree. And not only that, the game he chose also provides a good example of why chess "rules" like the square can sometimes be ignored and still get a good result, as in the variation that he showed in which the white king could just ignore the past pawn and mate him faster than he could promote. As he says, there are no absolutes in chess, and this is why this is a very instructive tutorial

For those that dont understand what he is trying to explain. Basically in endgames, you simply take the number of moves needed to promote a pass pawn, and form a square with the number of moves starting with the pawn as the bottom corner. (bottom left or right depending on the position). If the enemy king is in the square, it is able to capture the pawn, but if it is outside the square, the pawn promotes to a queen

In layman's terms the square is the area of potential movement the king has compared to each pawn's starting location. It only takes 5 moves for a pawn to reach end board from first tile.
For example of a good mechanic when using the square fundamental is if the King is on EITHER of the outer 2 tiles and you have a pawn on the opposite edge, it can march right up to the end of the board before the king can reach it.
Essentially if you can bait the king to the outer 2 tiles and have a pawn waiting you can execute it following the rule of square.

The Rule of the Square basically says that if the opposing King is not within the quadrant of the board that your pawn is in, then your pawn will beat the King in the race to the end of the board. However, if the King and the pawn are one square out of the supposed quadrant, then your King will meet your pawn at the end of the board, taking the promoted piece. If you can just spatially determine that the King is nowhere close to the square that the pawn is running to, then you should be fine and will promote the pawn. Hope this helped somebody

the distance from the pawn to the 8th and the same distance from the pawn towards the king.

A bit late of a reply but the rule of the square is an actual thing. Basically if say the white h pawn is on h5, that means it is 3 squares away from promotion. What you then do is imagine a line from the pawn going (in this case) 3 squares to the sides, then 3 squares up. This will make a square. If the king is inside this imaginary square it can stop the pawn from promoting. If it's outside it it can't

The square rule for dummies :
You imagine a square from a pawn to its promotion square (In the video, after A5, there are 5 squares including the promotion square and the square the pawn is on) and extend it towards the opposite king (so in our case the square extends 5 cells towards the king, from A5 to E5, so the 4 corners of the square are A5-A1-E1-E5). If the king is in or can enter this square, the king can stop the pawn. If not, he will never be able to reach the pawn on its own.
Hope that helps :) Keep Rocking Magnus !

This rule is a bit complex at first but if you break it down by playing it out by yourself you will see the sequence. This is very helpful and I have won many games with this rule.

    I'm a beginner and I've noticed/learned a couple things observing online:
    1. Do not rush your Queen to the front line, that is very stupid
    2. Bishop + Queen= Queen killer
    3. Make pawn chains that favour any Bishop color only, you can't have both
    4. I'll sacrifice my Queen when she blocks my development with other pieces
    5. Play on triangles
    6. Attack with 1 or two pieces more than the other player
    7. It's fun to set traps
    8. Learn from GMs like this young man here
