The best part about this lesson is his humility in each potential position, and his frankness towards his opponent in the real position. He makes no arrogant claims, he also tacitly explains the nature of blitz games, honestly signalling that Grischuk would never find himself in that position - or make such a decision - with more time on the clock. The true lesson he buries inside his modest analysis of his own "Rule of the Square" understanding is that - as he puts it - nothing is absolute.
Lemme teach you 1. Count the number of squares (including where the pawn) is to queening 2. Take that number as one side of a square and draw it horizontally on the board too, this will form a square 3. If the king can enter within that square in his next move, he is able to stop the pawn
@@Faust4541 let me re-teach because you don't need to count anything, you just go along the diagonal of the pawn to the end of the board and that's the limit
@@guinapovocals you mean diagonal of the king? Its the same thing, you need to visualise the square, experienced players dont need to count but im telling the unexperienced players how to count it
This is a very good educational video because it is perfectly clear that Magnus does understand the Rule of the Square, which is a very simple rule, and the video is driven by Magnus’s self-effacing sense of humour and fun. The game chosen illustrates the Rule perfectly clearly.
I agree but I can see why it would be confusing to someone who doesnt know what the rule is to begin with. They shouldve put in a little graphic explaining the rule although i suppose a simple google search is enough for the enterprising viewer
I agree. And not only that, the game he chose also provides a good example of why chess "rules" like the square can sometimes be ignored and still get a good result, as in the variation that he showed in which the white king could just ignore the past pawn and mate him faster than he could promote. As he says, there are no absolutes in chess, and this is why this is a very instructive tutorial
If you become a grand supreme elite legend fuckboi of beyblade and try to teach a scrub the dynamics of vertical thrust force in relation the spin of the blade, then you're going to find yourself coming up short a lot of the time. Once you know SO much about something it becomes difficult to gauge where others are at - and this gap makes it hard to teach because you don't know what they don't know and you don't know what's appropriate for their level., since you might as well be teaching a 30 year old a tactic/motif you understood when you were five. What does it take to teach? It certainly doesn't take being the best at the thing you're teaching.
Rule of the square: Draw a line from your pawn to the promotion square. Now draw a line of equal length left or right (towards the enemy king). That creates a square, and if the king cannot enter the square on their move, it cannot catch the pawn.
Im 1100 elo and i understood everything he said, he explained it very nice and clear and actually taught me to understand the importance of realizing the distance between king and a pawn, i don’t know what are you talking about that he didn’t explain it well enoguh but to me it was very clear..don’t forget this guy will be mentioned in history right next to Kasparov and Bobby as a true Da Vinci of chess and we are getting his lessons for free..That’s more than you could ask for as a chess fan.
Simple, but helpful, specially the last little bit about long enough time controls. As I get older I find myself struggling more with blitz and bullet, but focusing on rapid and classical helps me keep good blunderproofing practices like this. Amazing how simple advice is best.
he should have drawn the square, then it would be clear... sqaure means at 6:31 a5 -> a1 -> e1 -> e5 -> a5. If the king is not inside the box he can not get the pawn.
Dude spent 24 years of his life to the board, if my man wants to move the queen by sliding it or by even gripping it with his penis he should be able to!
Hey Magnus, if you imagine a vertical line in front of your past pawn and make the square of that distance on the horizontal you get the square of that pawn. The king can never reach that pawn unless its inside this square. Thanks for teaching me that rule
For those that dont understand what he is trying to explain. Basically in endgames, you simply take the number of moves needed to promote a pass pawn, and form a square with the number of moves starting with the pawn as the bottom corner. (bottom left or right depending on the position). If the enemy king is in the square, it is able to capture the pawn, but if it is outside the square, the pawn promotes to a queen
That's a great video! He's funny with his wry sense of humor. Anytime he talks chess you can learn something even when it's not on topic. A really great champion too. Totally open to the people!
In layman's terms the square is the area of potential movement the king has compared to each pawn's starting location. It only takes 5 moves for a pawn to reach end board from first tile. For example of a good mechanic when using the square fundamental is if the King is on EITHER of the outer 2 tiles and you have a pawn on the opposite edge, it can march right up to the end of the board before the king can reach it. Essentially if you can bait the king to the outer 2 tiles and have a pawn waiting you can execute it following the rule of square.
Lol Magnus is real for saying this. I remember someone mentioning "the square" not too long ago either on some video or stream and Magnus said well he believed he intuitively understood it but never really learned it. At least he wasn't fake and said "Yeah, of course I know it. I'm the 🐐."
I've always imagined on Halloween Magnus gets together with some chess pals and he dresses up as a mongoose. And they're like, "Magnus, what are you supposed to be?" and he says, "I'm Magnus... the mongoose." And he'll get maybe a few courtesy laughs out of it
The Rule of the Square basically says that if the opposing King is not within the quadrant of the board that your pawn is in, then your pawn will beat the King in the race to the end of the board. However, if the King and the pawn are one square out of the supposed quadrant, then your King will meet your pawn at the end of the board, taking the promoted piece. If you can just spatially determine that the King is nowhere close to the square that the pawn is running to, then you should be fine and will promote the pawn. Hope this helped somebody
Hi Magnus. The square tells you if your king can capture a passed pawn before it queens. the distance from the pawn to the 8th and the same distance from the pawn towards the king. That forms a square that is pretty easy to visualize. If your kings inside you can catch him. If hes not you wont make it so dont try. Your welcome from a sub 400 elo
Is this a UA-cam genre? I could get into tutorials where things are mentioned, ignored, and subsequently explained as unimportant. 10/10 I have no idea what the rule of the square is.
A bit late of a reply but the rule of the square is an actual thing. Basically if say the white h pawn is on h5, that means it is 3 squares away from promotion. What you then do is imagine a line from the pawn going (in this case) 3 squares to the sides, then 3 squares up. This will make a square. If the king is inside this imaginary square it can stop the pawn from promoting. If it's outside it it can't
Hmmm? He did not show you he was playing thirty others at the same time, all looking to beat him using the square, because now they “know he does not know, what you know!”
The square rule for dummies : You imagine a square from a pawn to its promotion square (In the video, after A5, there are 5 squares including the promotion square and the square the pawn is on) and extend it towards the opposite king (so in our case the square extends 5 cells towards the king, from A5 to E5, so the 4 corners of the square are A5-A1-E1-E5). If the king is in or can enter this square, the king can stop the pawn. If not, he will never be able to reach the pawn on its own. Hope that helps :) Keep Rocking Magnus !
It's not really intuition as much as it's photographic memory, he can glance at the board and remember how pretty much every line will end cuz he probably played it before. That's why he a beast on Blitz and Bullet.
Magnus in this video: So there is a rule, I don't know what it is but it is in my intuition Ryan Flanagan: Whelp, this is it bois, this is our religion

I am now convinced Magnus is just three children in a trench coat that Mr. Magoo-ed his way into becoming the world chess champion.
“I dont know the rule of the square, I just calculate it every single time”
Lemme teach you
1. Count the number of squares (including where the pawn) is to queening
2. Take that number as one side of a square and draw it horizontally on the board too, this will form a square

It certainly doesn't take being the best at the thing you're teaching.
hes tired probably? 😁
Yep ikr
Rule of the square:
Draw a line from your pawn to the promotion square. Now draw a line of equal length left or right (towards the enemy king). That creates a square, and if the king cannot enter the square on their move, it cannot catch the pawn.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh thank you. This is much better then calculating. Makes sense
Rule of Magnus: If it comes to an endgame and if you don't get flagged, then Magnus will promote a pawn and checkmate you.
My opponents are complaining that I draw on the board too much! 😜

That depressing music at the end fits damn well
Im 1100 elo and i understood everything he said, he explained it very nice and clear and actually taught me to understand the importance of realizing the distance between king and a pawn, i don’t know what are you talking about that he didn’t explain it well enoguh but to me it was very clear..don’t forget this guy will be mentioned in history right next to Kasparov and Bobby as a true Da Vinci of chess and we are getting his lessons for free..That’s more than you could ask for as a chess fan.

he should have drawn the square, then it would be clear... sqaure means at 6:31 a5 -> a1 -> e1 -> e5 -> a5. If the king is not inside the box he can not get the pawn.

Magnus: I don’t even know the rules of the square, I didn’t get it as a kid lol
Hey Magnus, if you imagine a vertical line in front of your past pawn and make the square of that distance on the horizontal you get the square of that pawn. The king can never reach that pawn unless its inside this square. Thanks for teaching me that rule
Continue plz, never stop, teach us as often as you can...

The rule of the square does in fact work. Knowing the system or rule of the square, cuts down on having to go through long calculation process
Magnus's friends: hey magnus ,tell us how you beat that guy everytime.
Magnus: okay, let me tell you, i do not know.
Magnus's friends : bruh!
Those who can do those who can't teach. This dude does and does well.

I'm the 🐐."

Maggy vs maggy
If it's outside it it can't
the beginning tune I thought I opened up a slotmachine :D :D
„I have to take and think later“ maybe i should try this too 😅
Checkmate now and think later. A really sound advice!
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hmmm? He did not show you he was playing thirty others at the same time, all looking to beat him using the square, because now they “know he does not know, what you know!”
The square rule for dummies :
You imagine a square from a pawn to its promotion square (In the video, after A5, there are 5 squares including the promotion square and the square the pawn is on) and extend it towards the opposite king (so in our case the square extends 5 cells towards the king, from A5 to E5, so the 4 corners of the square are A5-A1-E1-E5). If the king is in or can enter this square, the king can stop the pawn. If not, he will never be able to reach the pawn on its own.
Hope that helps :) Keep Rocking Magnus !
the outro sounds so divine, i thought i died trying to understand what i just watched
I LOVE HOW YOU USE AN ACTUAL BOARD!!!!
Its the same way as Fisher did :) you must smash the pieces when you capture them - theyre yours only if you dont allow oponent to promote :)

When you learn so much chess that your intuition becomes no. 1.
That's his superpower, his memory is so great that his intuition is now way above normal humans
It's not really intuition as much as it's photographic memory, he can glance at the board and remember how pretty much every line will end cuz he probably played it before. That's why he a beast on Blitz and Bullet.
Magnus in this video: So there is a rule, I don't know what it is but it is in my intuition
Ryan Flanagan: Whelp, this is it bois, this is our religion
Could you tell us about the rule of the Wooden Shield in the next video?
This rule is a bit complex at first but if you break it down by playing it out by yourself you will see the sequence. This is very helpful and I have won many games with this rule.
I'm a beginner and I've noticed/learned a couple things observing online:
1. Do not rush your Queen to the front line, that is very stupid
2. Bishop + Queen= Queen killer
3. Make pawn chains that favour any Bishop color only, you can't have both
4. I'll sacrifice my Queen when she blocks my development with other pieces
5. Play on triangles
6. Attack with 1 or two pieces more than the other player
7. It's fun to set traps
8. Learn from GMs like this young man here
