I feel like there are so many better reasons to skip the game awards than 'a DLC got nominated for GOTY,' that's not actively harmful to the industry in the same way the recent trend of bringing in a million celebrities to do a performance of the game awards instead of actually having the people who work in the industry gather together to enjoy and present the game awards
Shadow of the Erdtree is more of a new game than some of the "actual new games" (**cough cough** Call of Duty). A more accurate comparison would be Shadow of the Erdtree is about as much a DLC Elden Ring as Tears of the Kingdom is to Breath of the Wild. In some ways it's more like a new game than Tears of the Kingdom was (entirely new open world, and for the most part completely new enemies alongside enough new bosses to constitute a dark souls game) and in other ways it's not (Tears of the Kingdom has entirely new mechanics that aren't just changes to the stats, and it's world is much larger). This is not to say Tears of the Kingdom is a bad game. In fact I loved that game to death (it probably would have won GOTY if not for all the other heavy hitters that year like Baldur's Gate 3) Ps: I'm pretty sure that the Phantom Liberty DLC for Cyberpunk 2077 got nominated last year. I could understand more how that one would bother people, but the Shadow of the Erdtree is what all of us wish we could have from the DLCs we buy, so I think it could deserve it for that. PPS: I think a lot of us forget that a big purpose of the GOTYA is to show production companies what we want to see more of. GTA6 would not be able to win GOTY every year for some only sort of good DLC because that's not what gamers want so it's not what they'd vote for. Alright I'm done ranting now.
I think that if Rockstar makes a dlc the size and quality of Shadow of the Erdtree every year just to get game of the year then I would be pretty happy.

I agree. We had a lot of flops this year so I think they were desperate to find something. But There were plenty of other games they could of chose from.
I think DLC should be it own catalogs… It not an entire game nomination game. Like If something DLC it is extra not a brand new entire game. I watch it and only when other are like if watch party but a Nintendo Direct / Pokémon Day my speed. Also I got a Bayonetta win for but of music, only when Bayo 4 comes out of Pokémon I’ll watch again.
I feel like out-quality-ing should be the focus, but otherwise agreed. As a splatoon Player, Octo expansion should definitely count as a separate game from splatoon 2 for awards purposes
I agree with you on DLC should NOT be in the consideration for GOTY however, "DLC are not video games" i can't agree with, they are? expansions are still games, just add ons An add on is still a 'game' even if an extension. the only cavate to this rule is I think it should be given a asterisk is if its a FULLY PLAYABLE STANDALONE TITLE Like, example: Xenoblade Torna The Golden Country and Future Redeemed, those 2 expansions can be played without even playing the base games (tho its recommended for story reasons but its not forced, you can still understand things) and even purchased as physical copies. Also, they should just add DLC of the Year at this point, that's the most fair thing. "Ongoing game" to me isn't the same, cause those are all service games that are constantly pushed updates, not once every few years like big DLCs
You know what I don't blame you for all of that, I would of wanted StellarBlade to get nominated for GOTY yet they say wukong is better in everyway getting a last min nomination and win UGOTY at the golden joystick awards, and I do told myself If Stellar blade doesn't win any of it's nominations idk how to recover from that yet again I take your advice (either seriously or not) that I'll be done with award shows next year.
I watched TGA in 2020, and the only thing genuinely worth watching was Sephiroth’s Smash reveal. A few years later, I become a Xenoblade fan and learned about how 3 got snubbed across the board in 2022. I haven’t bothered with TGA since
i've been skipping the game awards for years cause it's always stupid big tripple a games that i dont care about edit: it's also just boring and a wast of time for me. I just wanna enjoy games for myself. even if there's a big announcement it wil be shared everywhere so i dont have to watch the awards.
I’m probably going to skip the Game Awards this year simply because it’s boring. Last year I watched another UA-camr’s stream of the show to make it less boring, but I was still falling asleep partway through. Not the mention the live chat was super negative and toxic and full of annoying spammers.
I absolutely agree though I will still be watching. Nominating a DLC for GOTY is incredibly scummy imo; and the circumstances surrounding how Erdtree was nominated (with Geoff changing the rules a few weeks before voting went live) certainly don’t help. I hope Geoff learns from this and just makes a beat DLC tier. This and snubbing Persona 3 Reload from literally any awards is horrible…
I personally disagree with the notion that DLC cannot count. I also think that DLC category isn't the answer, it's more nuanced than that. Something like SOTE which took many 50+ hours, had a dozen+ bosses, and just so so so much content is not common for DLC's to do. If there was a DLC category, it wouldn't even be a competition as most DLC's just are not that expansive. Should it be commonplace for DLC to be considered? definitely not. But i just think this DLC does enough to be an exception and deserves to be held up among the other nominees.
If you actually played elden ring dlc you would know that, it should be nominated. The fact that fromsoftware released this as DLC instead of a brand new game is actually amazing, the dlc could have easliy passed as an "eldenring2" and they could have chose to charge us $60 or $70 for it but no, they released a basically entire new game as a dlc for us which was amazing, If it was relased as a new game like how many current monopolized and greedy companies now just release the same game every year cough cough call of duty. Then SOTE would have been nominated regardless. This is not blatent favoritism its the game awards realizing that the amount of effort put into shadow of the erdtree was AT LEAST eqaul to the same amount of effort that was put into all the other games nominated. There was never an agreement for the game awards to not change rules. No shit they are gonna change the rules, the show isnt going to stay the same forever. In my opinion, SotE is the best thing that gaming has produced this year. Compare it to pretty much all alternatives and you have something that gives you more bang for your buck. There are studios who bring out a game smaller in size and ambition, but with two or three times the price. I also disagree with the Lord of the Rings argument. This isnt like Return of the king winning, and then winning again with the extended version. SotE is not a Remaster or Gold Edition or however you might call it. Its an entire new "thing". This is like the extended version of Return of the King containing a new short film, which then wins best picture. However i dont think it should win. Elden Ring has had its moment in the spotlight, and other projects should also get the recognition they deserve, but i still think that nominating it is a fair choice. I've had a great time with it. Arguably my best gaming experience of 2024.

I do understand the points you're trying to make, but I think they're fundamentally flawed in how you're presenting them: - A DLC isn't like an extended version of a movie, an extended edition of a movie is a re-edit, a DLC is more like an attachment. I find it more similar to an additional season for a TV show, or an OVA for an Anime. It's an extension not a re-edit. The way you positioned this argument is actually akin to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, as the game is effectively a re-edited version of the original Final Fantasy VII. - The assertion that an expansion for GTA 6 would automatically win if it was released in the next year, I don't think is valid here. What the "Game of the year" award is looking for here is whether this particular game is able to stand tall above everything else. Just because something is a DLC of a popular game, doesn't mean it automatically wins, it's more about the quality of the game that is presented. Just because it's nominated, doesn't mean that it's going to win
