  • We hit the range for the first time with the Arken Zulus 5-20 Digital Day Night Scope. It's Black Magic!!!
    After filming and releasing the unboxing video last week it was time to test the Arken Zulus and see how it performed at the range.
    I invited Wally King, the 2023 HuntLeague Outdoorsman of the Year to join me. I told him we were shooting a new digital day/night scope that I had just picked up for under $500 from ‪@ARKENOPTICSUSA‬. Wally came thinking it would probably perform more like a kids air soft toy than a legitimate hunting optic. After spending an hour with it he couldn't believe the Arken Zulus scope didn't cost $5,000.
    TESTING AT THE RANGE:
    This video doesn't show it but I fumbled around at first trying to figure this thing out. Connecting via WIFI was easy but we struggled getting a live image on the screen. We finally figured out my phone needed to be in airplane mode before it would work. After that I struggled again trying to figure out how to actually move the reticle using only my phone. (All of my struggles would probably have been resolved had I read the manual or watched a UA-cam video ahead of time).
    The menu/settings in the scope are clear and intuitive so I figured it would be simple. Getting a feel for the basic navigation functions was easy but once I connected to wifi things got a little more complicated. After a few minutes tinkering I figured out how to freeze the image and move the reticle from my phone. Then it was literally one shot! We never fired another shot at the 50m target and moved straight to longer ranges at 200 & 300yds.
    To say we were impressed is an understatement. This thing is AMAZING!
    CONCLUSION:
    Wally is buying one! My neighbor is buying one. My dad and brother are buying one. Basically anybody I know that likes FUN and sees this thing in person buys one (or two). You should probably buy one too while they are on sale for under $500, unless of course you hate fun.

    Just received mine yesterday, can’t wait to zero it in!

      Did you have a chance to zero it yet? That was one of the coolest experiences I have ever had at the range. Hope you have a similar experience

      Sure did! I’ve tried this scope first on a 17 hmr rifle, worked out awesome, moved it over to a 9mm just right carbine and was also unreal! This weekend I’ll put on my 308 rifle and give that a try!

    Great bit of kit. I got the 3-12 LRF version a couple of weeks ago. OK, the ballistic app took a bit of figuring out but once done, WOW! I'm using it for close range night time ratting with a sub-12 air rifle and it's always a problem trying to estimate distance and then hold over / under. The on-board ballistics just make it so easy. The rats don't stand a chance!

      I just mounted one of these on one of my dad's rifles. Also just got back from a bear hunt where I used the scope on a tripod just to capture footage. I am so impressed with this device still.

    Received mine last evening. Setup was a breeze. Now only await mosquito mitigation as this rain has rendered Brazoria County Gun Range infested beyond usability.

    Just got mine also, a day ago, had issues cuz stupid me didn't turn the WIFI on in the scope, only took 2 + hours to figure why it wouldn't connect. Got it now. Do you have more in-depth video of using and setting up the scope, not much in the instructions. This is going to be awesome. 👍👍 Nice quick video

      I am going to try and make a more in depth one soon. I just used the scope mounted on a tripod on an Alberta bear hunt. Had a killer experience but also ran into some issues where I tried changing the date/time on the device but couldn't exit the menu to save the settings. As soon as I paired it with my phone it fixed the issue but it was a problem for me not being able to save the input.
      I still can't believe how well the video appears when you run this scope in day mode at dusk/dawn. It still shows colors and tons of detail in those last few minutes of legal light.

    got one but with the laser range finder. On an air rifle, works great especially at night

      I ended up ordering two more of these with the rangefinder option. I was able to get some really cool footage of elk at night. The IR picks up the laser at night so you can see what the laser is pointing at. I am loving these new Arken scopes even though I can't use them to hunt big game with here in CO.

    Which app are you using the ballistics or optics for zeroing on your phone?

    • @huntleague
      @huntleague  13 днів тому

      It’s the Arken Optics app that you sync the device with. Then they have the Arken Ballistics app which is separate that you can input your speed, bc, bullet information into for holdover or MIL/MOA calculations.

    Why is it so swept back on that mount? Eye relief that bad?

    • @huntleague
      @huntleague  4 місяці тому +3

      Take a look at the unboxing and mounting video. I originally mounted it further forward like a traditional optic. It is a day night digital scope so you are looking at a screen not through glass. When you back off the optic there is some distortion that occurs around the edges. I would estimate the sweet spot to be 1.75-2" from the optic vs 3.5-4" for a traditional optic.
      The optic comes with a 1.5" rubber eye cup which you pretty much put your eye right up to. I found mounting the scope further back as seen in the video to be the most comfortable position for my length of pull. The recoil on a 5.56 never caused the optic to hit my eye although I would probably mount it one notch forward if I were shooting a .308 or similar to be safe.

    Which model zulus is this ?

    • @huntleague
      @huntleague  Місяць тому +1

      This is the one without the LRF. I bought both and now recommend the one without the LRF. If I am shooting in daylight I just use the range finder I already own. If I am shooting at night, I am not extending the range and would limit shots to known distances within 200 yards. With shots inside 200 I am not really dialing or using the reticle for significant holdover.
      At night with the IR mode on you can visible see the LRF pulse so you know exactly what it is bouncing off of and how aligned the beam is with your reticle. Both models are super cool but I think the non LRF model is probably a better fit for most shooters.
      There is so much to love about these little scopes. The auto record function is too cool.

      @@huntleague nice. I just ordered the LRF version since it had the 25% off coupon. So more features for less $ I guess lol. Thanks for the reply 👍

    • @huntleague
      @huntleague  Місяць тому +1

      @@tuhai223 Disregard the last comment then and you get all the bells and whistles! When you sync that one with the app you can use the built in LRF to make the adjustments automatically inside the scope which is super cool. Hope you love it. I still can't believe they sell that scope for under $2K with all the features. It still takes a little bit getting used to a digital optic but once you get the hang of operating it you will fall in love. I just used it to film through on a bear hunt in Canada and it was amazing. I can't believe how well is shows color and how much you can see at night without the IR mode even turned on. The sensor built into that is insane at low light. I will have to post some of those videos here soon.

    WHere is the night footage I mean really who the hell buys this to shoot during the day?

    • @huntleague
      @huntleague  25 днів тому

      Here is footage from the Arken at night. I would still use the Zulus during the day to capture video in certain scenarios. Using this scope in daytime mode at night is what was most impressive to me.

    I'm soon to be 66, last week I had to get new hearing aids. They're AI technology. Has a Phone program which would be helpful on feedback. After downloading these programs I discovered they can be hacked, track my location and change my programing without me doing anything. Deleted everything. So my point with all these phone apps, is that they can do the same. Cool scope, but I'll take care of my own business thanks.

    • @huntleague
      @huntleague  4 місяці тому

      I totally understand that perspective. To be clear you don’t need an app or your phone to zero the reticle or operate the scope. You can do it all from within the scope without connecting it to another device.

      I would add that connection between Zulus and phone is completely offline. The wifi connection is literally a two-device private network.

    Would this be ok on a 308 Win? Just worried about getting scoped with the short eye relief. Thanks.

      I had the Zulus out earlier today and was showing it to a buddy. On the spot said he was buying one after seeing it (Hoping the 25% off sale is still going). He said he was going to mount it on his .308 and use it for a pig gun in TX. When he said .308 I pointed out the eye relief and said I don't know if I would do that. He said his .308 has minimal recoil and he felt super confident it would be just fine. Most AR-10's manage the recoil pretty well so it probably won't be an issue.

      Tame recoil with a muzzle break... Buddy has one on his 300WM, recoil like 308!
