When checking with paper hold it perpendicular to the bedknife. Present it to the reel like it's a piece of grass. If you lay it flat it'll be harder to cut and you can end up with an overly tight reel or inconsistent reel to bedknife.

      MY EXACT THOUGHTS!!!
I STRAIGHT TO THE POINT, because a lot of times we just need immediate information and don't care for lengthy life updates, which can be so annoying once you click onto what you deemed as an informal video!!!!

(Probably summer, 1954 or 55) as a toddler I saw my 10 yo brother testing the sharpness of the blades on a mower just like this. I pulled a blade of grass and tried to copy what I saw him do - right at the same time he pushed it to continue cutting it. Guess what, the blade were sharp enough to cut the end of my index finger off right through the nail leaving the end hanging by a thread of skin. I’ve no idea how the doc did it but he reattached the tip and I still have it today 70+ years later. Careful with those mowers boys and girls!

Yeah, my dad as a child had the end of his little finger amputated by a reel mower back in the early 60's. There definitely not a toy for children to be missing around with.

Scary. Sharp objects, especially those that rotate, or move in any way are rather dangerous. I'd say you were lucky. I've got a buddy who lost a thumb somehow (all by himself, he didn't have help for his accident like you did) to a gas lawnmower. I can't fathom what he did and it's too late to ask him (R.I.P., non-mower related).

40  O Children of Israel! Remember My blessings which I bestowed upon you, and fulfill your pledge to Me, and I will fulfill My pledge to you, and fear Me.
41  And believe in what I revealed, confirming what is with you; and do not be the first to deny it; and do not exchange My revelations for a small price; and be conscious of Me.
42  And do not mix truth with falsehood, and do not conceal the truth while you know.
43  And attend to your prayers, and practice regular charity, and kneel with those who kneel.
44  Do you command people to virtuous conduct, and forget yourselves, even though you read the Scripture? Do you not understand?
45  And seek help through patience and prayer. But it is difficult, except for the devout.
46  Those who know that they will meet their Lord, and that to Him they will return.
47  O Children of Israel! Remember My favor which I bestowed upon you, and that I favored you over all nations.
48  And beware of a Day when no soul will avail another in the least, nor will any intercession be accepted on its behalf, nor will any ransom be taken from it, nor will they be helped.
49  And recall that We delivered you from the people of Pharaoh. They inflicted on you terrible persecution, killing your sons and sparing your women. Therein was a tremendous trial from your Lord.
50  And recall that We parted the sea for you, so We saved you, and We drowned the people of Pharaoh as you looked on.
51  And recall that We appointed for Moses forty nights. Then you took to worshiping the calf after him, and you turned wicked.
52  Then We pardoned you after that, so that you might be grateful.
53  And recall that We gave Moses the Scripture and the Criterion, so that you may be guided.
122  O Children of Israel! Remember My blessing which I bestowed upon you, and that I have favored you over all people.
123  And beware of a Day when no soul will avail another soul in any way, and no ransom will be accepted from it, and no intercession will benefit it, and they will not be helped.
124  And when his Lord tested Abraham with certain words, and he fulfilled them. He said, “I am making you a leader of humanity.” He said, “And my descendants?” He said, “My pledge does not include the wrongdoers.”
125  And We made the House a focal point for the people, and a sanctuary. Use the shrine of Abraham as a place of prayer. And We commissioned Abraham and Ishmael, “Sanctify My House for those who circle around it, and those who seclude themselves in it, and those who kneel and prostrate.”
126  When Abraham said, “O My Lord, make this a peaceful land, and provide its people with fruits-whoever of them believes in God and the Last Day.” He said, “And whoever disbelieves, I will give him a little enjoyment, then I will consign him to the punishment of the Fire; how miserable the destiny!”
127  As Abraham raises the foundations of the House, together with Ishmael, “Our Lord, accept it from us, You are the Hearer, the Knower.
128  Our Lord, and make us submissive to You, and from our descendants a community submissive to You. And show us our rites, and accept our repentance. You are the Acceptor of Repentance, the Merciful.
129  Our Lord, and raise up among them a messenger, of themselves, who will recite to them Your revelations, and teach them the Book and wisdom, and purify them. You are the Almighty, the Wise.”
130  Who would forsake the religion of Abraham, except he who fools himself? We chose him in this world, and in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous.
131  When his Lord said to him, “Submit!” He said, “I have submitted to the Lord of the Worlds.”
132  And Abraham exhorted his sons, and Jacob, “O my sons, God has chosen this religion for you, so do not die unless you have submitted.”
133  Or were you witnesses when death approached Jacob, and he said to his sons, “What will you worship after Me?” They said, “We will worship your God, and the God of your fathers, Abraham, Ishmael, and Isaac; One God; and to Him we submit.”
134  That was a community that has passed; for them is what they have earned, and for you is what you have earned; and you will not be questioned about what they used to do.
135  And they say, “Be Jews or Christians, and you will be guided.” Say, “Rather, the religion of Abraham, the Monotheist; he was not an idolater.”
136  Say, “We believe in God; and in what was revealed to us; and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs; and in what was given to Moses and Jesus; and in what was given to the prophets-from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we surrender.”
137  If they believe in the same as you have believed in, then they have been guided. But if they turn away, then they are in schism. God will protect you against them; for He is the Hearer, the Knower.
138  God’s coloring. And who gives better coloring than God? “And we are devoted to Him.”
139  Say, “Do you argue with us about God, when He is our Lord and your Lord, and We have our works, and you have your works, and we are sincere to Him?”
140  Or do you say that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Patriarchs were Jews or Christians? Say, “Do you know better, or God?” And who does greater wrong than he who conceals a testimony he has from God? God is not unaware of what you do.
141  That was a community that has passed. To them is what they have earned, and to you is what you have earned. And you will not be questioned about what they used to do.
2  And We gave Moses the Scripture, and made it a guide for the Children of Israel: Take none for protector other than Me.
3  The descendants of those We carried with Noah. He was an appreciative servant.
4  And We conveyed to the Children of Israel in the Scripture: You will commit evil on earth twice, and you will rise to a great height.
5  When the first of the two promises came true, We sent against you servants of Ours, possessing great might, and they ransacked your homes. It was a promise fulfilled.
6  Then We gave you back your turn against them, and supplied you with wealth and children, and made you more numerous.
7  If you work righteousness, you work righteousness for yourselves; and if you commit evil, you do so against yourselves. Then, when the second promise comes true, they will make your faces filled with sorrow, and enter the Temple as they entered it the first time, and utterly destroy all that falls into their power.
8  Perhaps your Lord will have mercy on you. But if you revert, We will revert. We have made Hell a prison for the disbelievers.
9  This Quran guides to what is most upright; and it gives good news to the believers who do good deeds, that they will have a great reward.
10  And those who do not believe in the Hereafter-We have prepared for them a painful punishment.
11  The human being prays for evil as he prays for good. The human being is very hasty.
12  We have made the night and the day two wonders. We erased the wonder of the night, and made the wonder of the day revealing, that you may seek bounty from your Lord, and know the number of years, and the calculation. We have explained all things in detail.
13  For every person We have attached his fate to his neck. And on the Day of Resurrection, We will bring out for him a book which he will find spread open.
14  “Read your book; today there will be none but yourself to call you to account.”
15  Whoever is guided-is guided for his own good. And whoever goes astray-goes astray to his detriment. No burdened soul carries the burdens of another, nor do We ever punish until We have sent a messenger.
170  O people! The Messenger has come to you with the truth from your Lord, so believe-that is best for you. But if you disbelieve, to God belongs everything in the heavens and the earth. God is Omniscient and Wise.
171  O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion, and do not say about God except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, is the Messenger of God, and His Word that He conveyed to Mary, and a Spirit from Him. So believe in God and His messengers, and do not say, “Three.” Refrain-it is better for you. God is only one God. Glory be to Him-that He should have a son. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and the earth, and God is a sufficient Protector.
172  The Messiah does not disdain to be a servant of God, nor do the favored angels. Whoever disdains His worship, and is too arrogant-He will round them up to Himself altogether.
28  It is He who sent His Messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth, to make it prevail over all religions. God suffices as Witness.
29  Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Those with him are stern against the disbelievers, yet compassionate amongst themselves. You see them kneeling, prostrating, seeking blessings from God and approval. Their marks are on their faces from the effects of prostration. Such is their description in the Torah, and their description in the Gospel: like a plant that sprouts, becomes strong, grows thick, and rests on its stem, impressing the farmers. Through them He enrages the disbelievers. God has promised those among them who believe and do good deeds forgiveness and a great reward.
85  Whoever seeks other than Islam as a religion, it will not be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.
111  And say, “Praise be to God, who has not begotten a son, nor has He a partner in sovereignty, nor has He an ally out of weakness, and glorify Him constantly.”

I had one for 5-6 years, biggest problem for me is my allergic as this throws grass upp in the air. But for a small area its fine and hazzle free compared to either battery, gas or with a cord. Just dont let the grass grow to long :P

I've had a reel mower like this for close to 10 years and prefer it over all the gas powered mowers I've had. It's a little harder to use but it's much less noisy, doesn't throw dust and gravel all over the place when things are dry in the summer, and it never needs the engine worked on before I can use it. When I don't let the grass get too long, these benefits (or rather lack of downsides) let mowing be almost a joy instead of purely a chore. My scythe has the same benefits over my string trimmer, though I am much more likely to use the string trimmer than I am to use the gas mower. My chunky American style scythe blade has a hard time getting right up to the edge of things, but it's great for clearing wide areas and the woody shrubs that have been trying to take over some areas of my yard.

I've got the same reel mower. It's as fast and easy to use as a powered motor as long as the grass isn't too long. It seems like the effort to mow grows exponentially in relation to how long the grass is, so if you mow weekly, it's pretty easy, but if it's been 2+ weeks, it takes forever.

What I do is use my cordless weed whacker (or strimmer as we call them here in the UK) to trim the grass down a bit first, then go over it with the mower.

I still remember using my grandparents 'reel mowers' when I was a kid.
    They worked quite well.
In certain situations, they can be a good alternative.

Great walk-through. I'm glad to see folks embracing the older tech, seeing for themselves that there's a better way in the old ways. For a yard that small, I'd opt for a scythe over the reel mower just because the scythe is so much faster and simpler in terms of maintenance. Rob Stephens has a great channel here on YT where he shows a lot of different styles of scythe. The Austrian pattern is the most popular on the market right now, but the Russian and and Swede/Finn designs are nice. The Irish Forked Frame is particularly lovely, but trying to find an antique in decent shape is a problem!

Now, let's see you file the blades and base shear blade!
I've had one since my folks gave it to me in the 1960's. The trick to great results is to mow frequently at a brisk pace to keep up your momentum except for long stuff where frequent short pushes work best. Rake up the really long stuff then go over it again at the brisk pace to even out any missed bits. Cheers from an old guy who loves the shearing of the grass instead of the ripping of typical power mowers. There is much less "browning" of the grass as a result. Many golf courses use a reel-type mower for greens and fareways. Cheers from Alberta, Canada.

    Excellent video.
One tip for anyone who is trying to completely avoid engine-powered lawn care (I'm AutiHD and the sound of lawn mowers and weed eaters leaves me more tired than the actual labor): get a grass whip.
You can get the golf club style ones for about $30, and they can work as a manual replacement for a weed eater (if you want to get close to stuff like your house, it does take some practice to swing with that level of control). Early spring when things pop off here with runoff from the mountains mixed with rain, sometimes I can't get to my lawn until I've got patches 2-3 feet high.
I will walk through with the grass whip and knock down those high spots. Also, in general if you just have a few annoying spots like that, you can just stop and run the mower over just that spot a few times. I personally like a motion almost like tossing the mower forward over the tough spot, as it gets the reel up and spinning before it hits the tough spot.
Finally, if you have extra-tall grass, you are going to have a few stalks that the mower misses no matter what. My last step when mowing is to just walk through my yard knocking those out with the grass whip.

You can use it for a larger yard but keep it mine that it is a manual lawn mower so if the grass gets long it will be hard to cut or if you have a large area.

I’d say it’s better for smaller lawns given the extra time it takes to mow with it vs a gas or electric mower, but that’s not to say people out there don’t do it! You’ll want to keep on top of mowing so the grass doesn’t get too tall, pull/choke out any weeds with grass seed, and pick up sticks before you mow to help make it easier when you do mow! This type of mower doesn’t do as well on tall grass, weeds and sticks can jam it if you run into them. Best of luck and thanks for watching!

I had one that my Grandfather used which had metal wheels, a main wooden shaft, wooden carved handles and a wooden rear roller like the one on Leave It To Beaver. My other one I had I would sharpen the blades by removing the wheel and I rigged up an adapter for my drill to spin the blades backwards using valve grinding compound on the blades and the cutting bar adjusted not too tight. Works well. These mowers were useless when the grass was longer. I’m a Boomer and as a kid in the 50’s and my Dad had 2 push 5 blade mowers. I dreaded everytime I had to cut the grass.

Gorgeous video, ' in every way ' I have a Scotts reel mower and sometimes I have to go over it and over it to get crab grass cut and most of the time if something is over 4 or 5 inches high it usually won't cut it, and it gets stuck very easy on twigs so I usually kick the blade with my feet to get it to start spinning again. It's a good workout since I'm a weightlifter it's an added workout, definitely will be subscribed.

I have a big yard and live in Florida so mine doesn't do well in the summer. The grass just grows too fast and it just bends over and the manual mower can't get it...plus 90+ degrees and humidity is a bad match for all that pushing. However, in the spring and fall, it does a great job. In addition, it doesn't mulch to the point like a power mower so if you use it in the fall and if it does get cold that winter, you still have that layer on your grass protecting the roots from the cold. In addition, it gives the yard a look that is neat but doesn't look just cut...no rows of discharge, and everything is cut but not to a precise level. You cut it and it is short but looks like you cut it 4-5 days ago.

Thanks for your video. I bought a used Flymo H40 manual push mover after reading several reviews. When I watch your video and several others using a manual push mower, it looks like a breeze! The Flymo was a lemon!! Have fixed it and the mechanics of it look great. Thanks to your video the machine cuts paper like you show. The problem I realize is the height of the grass. I have thick buffalo grass and I keep it closer to 60 mm. My question is at what height should I keep the grass with my powered mower so that I can start using the Flymo to trim it once a week. Getting out the powered push mower takes a bit of motivation and I thought the Flymo could be a walk in the park!

    • @Brooklyn-Richard
      @Brooklyn-Richard  Рік тому

Given that you have a thicker lawn and it’s getting jammed with a height of 60 mm, I’d try cutting it progressively shorter to see if it gets any easier to cut. I never had issues with lawns a little higher than that, but our lawn wasn’t lush. You may consider using two or three sheets of paper to calibrate you mower and see if a slightly wider gap will let it roll over your more lush lawn easier. You could give a last effort to try a different reel mower as well, but if none of these routes work, your lawn may simply be too lush for a reel mower. Thanks for stopping by! Best of luck to you!

You should also lap the edges, and makes a tight tolerance, you lap it once a year and you would not need to sharpen it for a few years.
The lapping material is similar to the material used for lapping engine valves.
Every spring take a spring rake and remove the dead grass & debris from the previous year and thatch your yard, this will open the soil to the air and it will take in more nitrogen when it thunderstorms and the wonderful nutrients from the cut grass you let it lay.
I like reel mowers because they are less stressful in the grass because they are basically rotary scissors for your lawn instead of a spinning machete.

  • @8Jory

I would say just make sure you're sharpening as evenly as possible using a tool like this. If you take too much material off in one area, and not enough in another you can essentially ruin your mower by accident. Not that it can't be fixed, but you're getting into more specialized territory by that point.
There's a way to sharpen them using lapping/ polishing compound, even baking soda toothpaste if the blades only need a light refinishing. Sharpening them this way also ensures the blades stay nice and even

@Brooklyn Richard I highly recommend looking into scythes if you haven't already. They are similar to reel mowers in the same plethora of benefits. No gas, engine, generally less cost, much easier to avoid damaging things, and they're silent. The only maintenance is blade honing, sharpening, and eventual replacement. Reel mower and scythe combo is what I plan to get when I get my own place.

Oh, I forgot to mention, scythes replace trimmers. lol.. That's why I recommended them. It's still good to have a trimmer of some type and since scythes don't utilize a violently fast spinning object and instead a slow blade that you control, they are much easier to protect siding, flowers, etc.

We had one of these things when I was a kid,and that was a loonnng time ago. I am in my seventies, just to give you an idea. I don't recall it ever being sharpened/adjusted,and ours came with a grass catcher, but I don't remember how effective that was. I presently have a battery electric mower that needs *no* adjustment beyond a yearly blade sharpening. It is a mulcher,so I just mow and am done.

These push reel mowers are BEST used by well maintained lawns. I have a model almost exactly like this one.. If you neglect a lawn.. being several inches too high.. this mower is not for you. It is a maintenance/ manicure mower. IT is NOT a solution for overgrown lawns. This should be obvious. I picked mine up because the previous owner did not understand this and threw it out. I love using these. The simplicity is rewarding; HOWEVER, you need to be into doing your lawn regularly.. like REALLY regularly. You are not going to knock down your 4 week old lawn 4 feet tall (some exaggeration intended) with these. Get out there every 4 or 5 days with it.. and you'll understand the appreciation of what shes talking about and not setting it on the curb for your local scrappers.

3  The descendants of those We carried with Noah. He was an appreciative servant.

5  When the first of the two promises came true, We sent against you servants of Ours, possessing great might, and they ransacked your homes. It was a promise fulfilled.

7  If you work righteousness, you work righteousness for yourselves; and if you commit evil, you do so against yourselves.

If you keep the blades sharp, the reel mower does a great job. Thanks for the tutorial. It is important to mow often, the longer the length of grass, the more apt the mower is to roll over the grass and not cut it.

Why does the yard have to be small?
