    maybe Wizards of the Coast should employ you to do the job they failed to do in the starter box set and show total newbies like me how to play the game. reminds me of those instruction booklets for video recorders that left you non the wiser after reading.

      +David Martin I have several colleagues who did great work at Wotc over the past 5-7 years. Their reports of the experience are not good, sorry to say... but thanks for the encouragement!

      I suspect there are thousands of D&D starter sets buried in cupboards allover the globe, never seeing the light of day. Keep on trucking :-)

    Wow, big thanks! As a new DM with players completely unfamiliar with the craft, this simple way of explaining encounters will definitely come in handy. Subbed!

    Great vid, simply explained. No need to get bogged down in detritus. Just roll the damn dice! Love it!

    This is also a great way to start kids off playing D&D. Just have them pick out a mini and start playing. 😎

    very nice. I've used and have seen used the dice tracking. the color of those looks great. I use that electric green accent color in thumbnails ; I have a fireplace dvd you have nice lighting in your vids. I used the 5e advantage/disadvantage dice in a house rules vintage kenner destroy death star game vid with an orange d20 form the star wars minis game and a black d20 form the 4e red box ; I'm going to tell my high school D&D friend about this channel I think he'd dig it.

    This was a really great video. I've been playing since the original red box days and this brought back a lot of memories. We didn't worry about complicated things like encumbrance we just got in there with the basics and a desire to do cool shit. I was like ten and we just had fun. Heck we watched Return of the Jedi and that gave us the idea to have the gods visit our characters and help us design blades that burnt as hot as the sun and disappeared into the handles. Did it follow the rules? Hell no but we had a blast rolling dice and battling ogres, goblins and gelatinous cubes. Would love to be a part of your games. Keep it up man your channel rocks.

    Seriously, great video. It never occurred to me to use dice for stat counters, but it's a killer idea. Tracking monster HP is my least favorite part of DMing. Let me ask you though, what if you have a crowded, tight battle against several identical foes? You can't keep the dice next to them if the space is occupied, and you can't visually distinguish goblin 1 from goblin 2. What then, oh Master of the Dungeon? What then...?

    • @Runehammer1
      @Runehammer1  9 років тому +1

      +HardSoftCo we got a ton of very tiny d6's, and big hp sponges we do on paper...solving this in coming projects...

    Hank, how would you handle giving the players XP?
    I've planned to try out your 3 beginners scenario form the playlist with a 7y/o and a 13 y/o
    It would be great if they could have these characters with them, getting them a "stronger"
    (without going into too much detail off course)
    thank you for sharing your insights.

    • @Runehammer1
      @Runehammer1  7 років тому +6

      if normal xp math is too much, just do the 3 point system. When they do something extra fun, they get 1 XP... get 3 and you level up! they should be getting 1-2 per session to start, then get more conservative with 1 xp.... OR even simpler is to simply 'GRANT' their level up abilities like bonuses and abilities when you feel it fits the story. who says we have to do xp? let the growth happen when it feels fun for everyone at the table!

    Ya know, I don't need this old advice on running battles. I've been playing D&D since it was being published by TSR, but it does my old gamer heart good in these later-day degenerate times to see somebody just rolling dice and having fun.

    HEEY yesterday i had my first day of DND and DM ... :D we played 7 hours str8 ... we had a GR8 GR8 time :) dnd rocks... in 2 weeks we will make our second session! so i have work to do. As a dm i did well with rules and battles story was ok and our first dungeon was nice but i see that i lack in (open world Roll play) talking to random npc's seems a little hard for me. any good way to help me with random npc's ?

    • @Runehammer1
      @Runehammer1  8 років тому

      +Chris Pandaz they're always tough...keep the action dense, only get into 'open world' in limited doses...even our npc convos are usually during action scenes!

    • @GoDLik3Darion
      @GoDLik3Darion 8 років тому

      ye i will make it a little bit more restrictive (not letting my players know that) and leave some open world to help me develope as DM. i really love the continious campains the feeling that u live in that world and develope and become someone . thanks for the info Drunken Master

      well, easier sai than done...my players don't have, or should they, the affinity for teh camera I do. Most people really change when a camera appears, so I have been NOT doing game streams. even the most awesome, clever "there" players can really clam up with a camera....
