- In this video find out what i eat in a day as I travel to Bolton in the UK to try a Pasty Barm! But the challenge for this video, is that I have to do it all in one day. So I take a train from Leeds, UK to Bolton, UK, have to find the best Pasty Barm, try it, and make it back to the train station in time for my train out of Bolton later on in the day. So will I succeed? Or will I fail? Find out in this video!

What did you think of the Pasty Barm?
Comment Below 😀
Bland
You are right too dry without a sauce
It's ages since i had a Carrs pasty. Probably when I went to a football match near there. Not sure about the barm combo. Might be a bit of a carb overload. The pasty looked good. I think they do a similar thing in Wigan called a "Wigan kebab" which has mushy peas, chips and a meat pie on a barm.
Damn, the secret's out - now all the riff-raffs will know how to make the Bolton Pasty Barm.
They are very nice.I had one at the Carrs Pasty shop on the Middlebrook retail park a few miles away in Horwich.
Your videos are great, informative, interesting, and you’re great to keep up the good work buddy
Thanks!
You didn't visit Ye Olde Pastie Shoppe. They're one of the oldest pie shops in Bolton (125 years) and still produce pies using their traditional methods and ingredients.
It's a source of great debate in Bolton, which is better Carrs or Ye Olde pasty shop. For a pasty I prefer Carrs but Ye Olde do a Whist Pie that is delicious
I think I'd rather just have the pastie without the barm
Cant believe u looked at the engineering and never mentioned the Great Fred Dibnah statue in front of it
Probably because it looks nothing like him.
Fred was the man.
Fred was an absolute genuise, very intelligent and fearless may he truly rest in peace.
Or even 'Dibnah'.
@@mummyd1990 he was a legend for sure
I like that you include the journey to were your going now, as I am interested in transport.
Where
Thanks for all the trouble you go through each week to make the Sunday video. Ticket gates seem to be worse in Leeds. Maybe you should head for the one next to the staff member from now on just incase!
The Market Place was constructed in the 1800s with "The Vaults" - the underground section - dating back to 1855. The vaults were only re-opened in 2016 and it was indeed a more open market type building up until the 2000s when it was refurbished and re-opened as a shopping centre. Carrs do great pasty barms but for the best pasties in Bolton you need to visit Ye Olde Pasty Shoppe, although their pasties are far better eaten on their own, rather than on a barm.
Scotch pie, roll and broon sauce lovely
Sounds good
Delicious.
Can't believe he walked past the legend Fred dibnah 😮
Interesting 💯
Looks fab 😋 Youll have travel to Wigan now ... I'm sure they are famous for the " Wigan Kebab " which is a local meat and potato pie in a bread bun ..as you say " which is best "
Even after having this massive piece of pie and bun I wouldn't have passed the Little Shop Of Dessert without buying some sweet treat for the trail journey (as seen on the left side when you've just left the shopping mall). 😉
Bolton seems to be a very beautiful town with some impressive clock towers. 👍😊
I should have got dessert! 😔
In Dundee, we have a variation of this which is a bread roll with a scotch or bean pie in between. It sounds awful but it's actually quite good! Great video as usual, they really just get better and better.
Maybe I should try one 🤔
hi from leeds. i make these at home all the time , sometimes with a pasty sometimes a pie , with a pie its also known as a wigan kebab
Imagine if you were disabled or elderly no chance, our rail service is crap
A pie sandwich 😃🥧🥪 , yes, most things are enhanced with a bit of HP sauce.🙂
The sauce is definitely needed
Hello my friend, this is definitely one for the pie/pasty & bun lover, I thought it would be better with brown sauce!! I think I've heard of a pie barm before with some Greggs customers liking it. It's a shame you had to do connecting trains for this review, thankfully you had a much better experience on your return journey, " phew". The rail fare & cost of pasty barm was good too! Excellent video as always, lovely to see you take care 💜💜XX
It was an adventure!
He should have stayed on the train and come to Wigan for the pie barm - also known as the Wigan Kebap. Wigan has also been home to the World Pie eating championship since 1992.
Always raining in sunny bolton 😂😂
Now you need to try the Wigan Kebab :D
I think I do and compare
Another entertaining video keep keep them coming mate 🎉🎉
Thanks, will do!
I would never have thought of putting a pasty in a roll ! But can’t beat a bit of double carb. Would be nice to have a pot of gravy to dip it in - now that would be good !
Pot of gravy would have been amazing!
why do i always watch these when im hungry and my food isn't ready, i never learn lmao
Just don't make the mistake of watching these videos when you have no food in.
That combo is similar to Jamaican takeaways serving a Jamaican beef patty inside coco bread. Handy to pack an umbrella or a poncho to be ready for the weather so you can make more time when out during the trip. Fun adventure!
Maybe I should go to Jamaica for one 🤔
@@everydayimeating3407 You'll find enough decent Jamaican takeaways in U.K. that have it also. 🙂
Never heard of these but i could definitely eat one. 🎉great vlog usual
You should!
Be the next james bond you are cool lol
Agreed
😎
I don’t know what day of the week it was but crikey that town centre was as dead as a dodo. Great video as always.
It was a Wednesday
The look on your face when the train was 9 minutes delayed!😄 Great upload
Train delays seem to happen quite often!
That's my tea sorted.👍
This bloke lives life on the very edge , god knows how he does it ,
The Market Hall was indeed an indoor market back in the day when Bolton was a vibrant and busy market town unlike the dead town it is today.
People will blame it on internet shopping but there are plenty of northern towns still doing very well and holding on to their heritage.
Carrs not as good as they used to be and we prefer a good meat and potato pie from Bowen Pies in Adlington served with mushy peas and gravy , better than anything you can find in Bolton.
Great vlog mate 👍
I find those baps rather dry, with pasty stuck in middle too many carbs, but if one likes a pasty in a bun, Id suggest a brioche bun as many outlets use for burgers. You deserve however be congratulated going all way to Bolton from Leeds try that rather IMO dreary offering .. Always bit fun watching your food videos though.
Love your videos, always entertaining. I really enjoy food reviews. Sorry about the hassle you had on this video.
It was a hectic day lol
Great video as always-you are a truly dedicated UA-camr. I quite like the idea of the pasty barm.
Thank you for bringing this wonderful dish to the general public. Genuinely made me smile with happiness
Thank you!
Ime From Wigan and i have a Pasty Barm every Saturday
Up here in Ayrshire Scotland it’s quite common to have what is known as a pie in a roll. My favourite is onion pie in a buttered roll smothered in tomato sauce, yummy Xx
That sounds like an video interesting idea for him. 🙂
Great review really enjoyed Thanks for all your hard work regards Greg
Thanks 👍
Really enjoyable vids pal, keep them coming
Thanks, will do!
Ye Olde Pastie Shoppe - the oldest Pie Shop in Bolton do a cracking Pasty Barm,
And so does every other Bakery (apart from Carr's).
Tomato Ketchup is a prerequisite, you can ask for it & they'll squeeze a bit on top.
HP brown sauce improves everything
It does!
Trains are so bloody stressful. Glad you made all the trains on time.
That food looked really comforting, and just what you'd need on a rainy day. I've seen similar dishes with huge meat pies, mushy peas, and chips within a massive bread bun. I'd suffer serious carb overload if I ate that.
It was a carb heavy meal for sure
Trains are fine if you just get a cheap day return. Then you are not tied to any particular train within off-peak times. Less stressful than driving anyday. Even cheaper with a Network card.
Great upload. Worth the trip to Bolton
Yes it was!
Ahhh, so the travelling was the stress, not the pasty barm! It actually looked like great weather for the pasty barm. I've never had one but I'd like one. That looked like it'd keep you going all day long. That one was big. Great vid. Bolton looks ok. I'd like a Jamaican pasty barm. Why is it called a barm anyway?
Pie and muffin is Wigan. If you want to do something quirky via train, Strawberry Duck in Entwistle food ok it's the train journey.
I'm from Liverpool I have been doing this for a very long time I love it and you deffo need the HP as it makes it 😊
Danke für das neue Video. 😊
A great vid Gary.
What a legend! Proper northener!
Not sure about that, but at least you have got what you went for. Thankyou take care
Carrs pasty are really good but you should try the old pasty shop on church gate you won't be disappointed X
Next time!
That looked very nice.
It was good!
Very interesting video as i had only been to Bolton once for breakfast at the weatherspoons. Looked quite a large place and your pasty balm looked ok if you like a high carbs item, agree it needed the sauce.Price was good for the food, but the train journey was pricey!
Very interesting though thanks.😊
Thanks for watching!
We have been doing a pie on a roll for years in Scotland 😂 can't believe you had to go to Bolton for that, get a pie or pastry from a butchers then a decent roll and your sorted 😊 xx
Try the chippy at Parkgate, they make their own pies 🥧 Delicious
Classy as ever can u chase the best fish n chips in England
Where is it?
Thats for you to find I'm not sure blackpool maybe
If you've had that, you may as well head to Derry for a sausage roll bap. You need an international trip again!
I need another international trip!
Hello 👋 EIE
That was kind of weird to me. I know you mentioned the dryness, I would choke on that. It's a miss for me I'm afraid. Thanks for sharing your hard work 😊
Its unusual for sure
Looks good never heard of it, would like to try it though!
Its worth a try!
Get to Wigan pal and get yourself a pie barm.. Not a pasty barm.. Golloways is the bakery of choice I'd say
Cant beat a good old Pasty Barm from Carrs. As mentioned elsewhere, a visit to Ye Olde Pasty Shop would have been worth your time too.
As a Wiganer next door to Bow ton if you had shaded our neighbours I would have you forever banned from trying a Wigan kebab. AND you never mentioned Fred.. My Dad was a friend of his and I met him and his traction engine many times too .
When are we going to have a meeting in Leeds of your many fans?
Hi from boiling Los Angeles 🙋♀️. 105F/41C here. We're finally cooling down. Yesterday we reached 110F/43C. Food looked good! Picturesque mall too!
Got to admit, I was hoping you'd leave us with a cliffhanger, on whether you'd made your return connection 😂🤔. I've also begun guessing on whether your phone will scan at the gate or not!
I live in Bolton.. nice with salad cream
You must try a “Wigan Kebab” next then.
Try a John Bull in the Blackburn area. Available in chip shops.
"It's pretty unusual to have a pie on a sandwich" 😂😂 Not if you're from Bolton....or Wigan! 👀 You made one BIG mistake, you should have gone to Ye Olde Pastie Shoppe. It's been there since 1898! Carrs is more commercial.
Greetings from Redondo Beach 🇺🇸🇺🇸Nice video👍🏽
Hello 👋
Looked OK. By the way, I don’t travel by train very often & I’ve never sampled that kind of food, but using my general knowledge of current costs for trains & food my estimate was about £35-, which appears to be pretty close to what your excursion cost you 😉👍.
It was a strange combo indeed & definitely needed a sauce ! Actually I liked your old format where most of the video is about the food & not travel !
that woman at train station didn't look impressed slamming her card down to let you through lol id have put some gravy on the pie
She did not lol
Have you done Scotch egg from Fortnum & Mason London.
History on Wikipedia
Ginger Pig scotch eggs in Borough market and perhaps a Harrods one.
There's a really good Turkish restaurant Gary reviewed a few months back.
Perhaps you could do 2 vlogs in London.
Maybe go off piste and review the 'Mouse trap'.
Try oatcakes in Stoke on Trent filled with English breakfast. Very nice. 😊
Thanks for the tip!
They should have provided gravy for dipping.
Gravy would have been great!
Gravy makes everything better.
Come on you’ve got to be joking….😂Thank you for bringing this to our attention 👍🇬🇧
Try ye olde pastie shoppe next time it's a bolton institute . Where you filmed outside superdrug you can see church in background follow that it's on left where road goes to cobbles . Local celebs go in pictures on walls
Next time!
Looks similar to a Jamaican patty stuffed in a coconut bun.
Sounds good!
Who took all the filling out the pasty ? lol 😂
Pasty Barm , all good easy tea in my hometown ! and post beer session !
From Italy and Spain to Bolton 😢
“Who would of thought” you’d travel all the way to Bolton to eat a pie sandwich 😂👍🙈
The market centre looked interesting.
It was!
So really...you could have stayed at home, bought some rolls and a pasty (which is what it is, it isn’t a pie!) and made it yourself!! But another lively video full of personality 😂😂😂!
If I owned a café I would add this food option.
Initially it would be a gimmick but soon enough, the local press would get involved and I'd have plenty if free publicity.
On Tyneside the bakeries sel pasties and stottie cakes, which are large flat bread buns. The quarter-stottie would be the perfect size for a pastie inside.
❤🎉
UA-cam has become saturated with food and travel reviews these days. Where are the original channels anymore ? Simple fun content, sadly missed on here.
Wigan kebab as they are known in the nieghbouring town ............ ❤ for me I'd have a greenhalghs cheese and onion pie ..or Lancashire pasty on a barm .. with ketchup ... ye olde pastie shops delights are just to be eaten as they come
I really enjoy your food adventures. As far as the pasty in a bread roll... I don't get it?! Greeting from Melbourne
Its an unusual meal lol
Living it Melbourne you’ll never “ get it “ it’s a regional delicacy. It’s cold and wet all the time in Bolton and this is cheap, quick, filling and warms you up.
In Glasgow we have a scotch pie in a roll
You need a Wigan kebab mate.
Galloways is the place to go for a pasty, will be a whole different experience.
Where is Galloways?
@@everydayimeating3407 Oh sorry forgot to mention it is a Wigan bakery.
Needs some gravy. I've made pie sandwiches before.
That's what I thought. A nice onion gravy.
Next stop: Derry City, NI for a Sausage Roll bap 🤤
Gets so tense when you try to get through the barrier with your phone…..will it/won’t it work? The tension is unbearable 😂
The only good thing to come out of Bolton was The legend Fred Dibnah!
Will probably cut your life expectancy by 5 years but man that looks bloody incredible👌
Have you given up longer distances and just sticking to Northern Towns? If so, the Northern Tourism Board needs to give you an award. I still say you can fit Leeds to London in Coach Trip one day there and back. Pie & Mash with parsley sauce. F.Cooke's in Hoxton. I'll let you off the Jellied Eels!
I have not but it got a bit expensive lol
The mall reminds me of the mall on Grafton St. In Dublin, Ireland.
Should have gone to Ye Olde Pasty Shoppe on Churchgate across from The Man And scythe. Better pasties.
1855 market beautiful
