Great advice! Collecting graduating students can be very rewarding to see their reactions, but at the same time, it is impossible to know if they will still be an artist within five years. Those first years after graduating are the toughest, in my opinion, when the artist suddenly stands alone. Thank you for tuning in and for sharing this!
Most art students only copy what they're taught. Nothing original is produced by youngsters, because they lack maturity and confidence. It's extremely rare that a recent graduate creates anything of real fine art value. They can barely be art teachto kids, but art is mostly a hobby. Art schools aren't leading to actual art career at all, or any income. They better learn how to re-educate themselves into real jobs, those required in societies (like graphic design etc).
I think it’s worth mentioning that buying art is about confidence. This can be achieved by starting to purchase affordable works at prices far lower than even the lowest of the budgets you quoted. I include in this, print, photo, book art, applied arts and multiples. There are also interest free credit schemes where work is made affordable by allowing the purchaser to pay instalments. These things are important because they encourage new collectors or purchasers on modest incomes, some of whom progress to feeling ready and able to purchase works at higher prices. Ensuring people feel that art can be accessible to them when they have their first job (or are even still studying), is vital to the future growth and sustainability of the market.
Hi Chris, once again, my gratitude for your excellent contribution in the comments. There is something intimidating about making your acquisition. So making your first purchase at a lower price is indeed crucial. It most often starts with art books or sometimes even cheap posters and reproductions. But as soon as you purchase your first real, unique piece, you will want to buy a second one. Then a third. And before you are aware of it, you are working on your own private collection. If I think about it, I have never had any regrets about purchasing art so far, but I have some enormous regrets about not purchasing them.
@@contemporaryartissue I tend to tell people that a purchase will have repaid you within an hour of having brought it home! Of course at the other end of the market, there is a culture where intimidating the buyer is a conscious part of the marketing strategy (not one I approve of!). Here in the UK I can think of a very prominent collector who (allegedly) is only ‘permitted’ by the galleries to make a purchase once Saatchi has had first refusal!

Yes, that is a very valid point-a strategy I do not approve of at all. However, I feel as if the tide is turning, in particular with the younger generation of galleries.
@@contemporaryartissue in the 90s I worked for a very small artist led gallery. Despite our size, we somehow managed to attract a number of ‘blue chip’ UK artists to exhibit with us. In one case (an artist you’ve featured), any requests to purchase had to be vetted by the dealer. Corporate collections were barred. Eventually the artists old school asked to buy a print and nearly got refused, until we pointed out that the commission from the one sale alone cover the cost of the show! The artist in question however, was an absolute star and lovely to work with. Really cared. I think you’re quite right about the younger generation, especially with more practising artists (like yourself) operating as gallerists.
I really enjoy Joseph Pennell. Prolific and talented and affordable. Certainly not contemporary, but I have held pieces for decades. Collect with the heart and to hell with resale.
Terrific draughtsman. If you enjoy his work and it is affordable, don't hesitate for a second to collect. If you'll enjoy it everyday, it will repay you in a different manner! Thank you for tuning in and wishing you all the best!
As to the money involved? Bone crushing at times still good to hear and true. Introducing those mentioned options could be a game changer. Artist must work through hearing sales/selling truths. We are where we are because of who we are. The salve you gave was the strength in one’s community and friendships. No matter one’s station being a part of it has it’s rewards. Art fairs are full as I took you to mean. I always feel a bunching up or feeling of being packed in. I tend away from art fairs. But never say never!
The art world has been churning the same art movements for the last 30 years with incremental innovations. Right now older artists comprise a viable cohort to search for collectible Art because these Artists have had decades to digest the complex and varied history and theory of modern and postmodern Art and the best have negotiated this complexity to create something which is historically relevant.
Great advise its how you infuse this great understanding in our mind / art has no boundaries and it is your super intellectual advice that has compelled me to paint more blue chip art sure 😊
I’m just starting my collection. Good info. I just buy paintings that make me feel good. Most of them are of nature or world landmarks. Not sure about selling them. Kinda didn’t think about that. Just thought… that makes my house/office/whatever look nice. So, buy. When I get a lot, I’ll probably stsrt thinking about starting a gallery or something. I don’t know. Not actually sure about starting a gallery. I kinda don’t like the business model.

Only buy art that makes your stomach flip, especially if you can't quite afford it. I have lived such a life and have a fine collection.
