  • A warm, cosy poem to brighten up a rainy July day :) 🧣
Here is the poem: 'Don't Hesitate' by Mary Oliver
If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy, don’t hesitate.
Give in to it. There are plenty of lives and whole towns destroyed or about to be. We are not wise, and not very often kind.
And much can never be redeemed.
Still life has some possibility left.
Perhaps this is its way of fighting back, that sometimes something happened better than all the riches or power in the world.
It could be anything, but very likely you notice it in the instant when love begins. Anyway, that’s often the case.
Anyway, whatever it is, don’t be afraid of its plenty.
Joy is not made to be a crumb.
Sending you lots of love, and lots of JOY! 🧣🧣

"don't be afraid of its plenty" is evocative in the other direction, too; not only may we fear the scarcity of joy, and avoid relishing it because we fear our single crumb being taken from us, we may fear an abundance of joy because relishing it is a commitment to happiness. Happiness can be a higher standard, and it is easier, in a way, to persist in the standards we are accustomed to.

"A crumb I can manage, but a whole loaf?"
Even if it's joy, it can be easy to question whether we are ready, or whether we are deserving - even if it will not and cannot be failed or taken away.

      yes i think so too
i think a lot of our lives we are inherently afraid it’s almost this default state
and this fear (although sometimes it is only imagined and only exists in our minds) it stops us from enjoying so much of life
i mean it makes us so anxious sometimes for no good reason!
and i think to kind of be happy or be content or enjoy small moments of life - is kind of an act of rebellion in a way
it’s almost an act of defiance - because you are accepting that the world is kind of cold at times but still choosing to see the good in it too
of course it is a practice in itself and some days are harder than others!

yes this is another thing too i get that
      that guilt kind of feeling
like “do i deserve to be happy when so many other people are deprived of it?”
but then i think of how temporary it is and how most people have access to this joy
i don’t think happiness exists in grand forms or gestures but in really simple acts but most people think you have to be extremely privileged or successful to find it but sometimes even those people are unhappy (at their core)
sometimes the more “stuff you have the more problems you tend to face too

funnily enough this reminds me of a roald dahl quote i read ages ago (he was a children’s writer):
“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.”
I don’t know how it fits into this discussion exactly but i feel that joy is somehow like that
it is sometimes hidden and goes unnoticed
i feel at times we go through the world not really “seeing” it
we are often busy and sometimes we miss to capture this small moments of beauty …
anyway thank you for that insight i really like hearing what people think about these things:))🦋

@@nimsilva27 You're very welcome! And thank you for the videos - I don't read much poetry on my own, so I'm grateful UA-cam has been suggesting you.
I can see how that feeling fits in. The first metaphor that comes to mind is driving on a highway by a forest: when we are driving far from a forest, we can see its whole and want to come closer, but when we begin to drive within the forest, it is difficult to look out the window and focus on anything but individual trees or spots on the ground, instead of taking in the whole of the forest around us - in the same way, when we are surrounded by joy, the best way to take in more than a crumb is to slow down, come to a stop, and get out of our "vehicles" of constant progress.
I think? Hopefully that makes sense LOL
      Love the vids :D
