When I fly my DJI mini 3 at a wind speed over 20/25 km/h it goes up in altitude and I can't make it go down. Then I have to do the emergency break, this has happened two times.
I carried out an emergency roof inspection in 44mph gusts with a 30+mph constant wind here in Cornwall. The M3p appeared to weave as it fought the wind but the video footage was impressingly stable but you could hear the motors working incredibly hard. For the first and only time ever, I experienced a momentary fly away of around 20 metres, a quick flick on the down stick cured this & I regained complete control, I quickly returned at this point but was utterly impressed with the performance and the footage given the extreme conditions.
Welcome to my neck of the woods Ian, yep it does get pretty windy down here..but with our stunning scenery 8ts good to know how strong the mini 3 pro is.

Much over 20 mph I don't bother, guzzles too much battery on my mini2. Got to be ultra mindful on direction round here too, trapped between coast and authorisation zones. 10,15 no worries. Also greetings from a 2nd generation British immigrant, I definitely see why my ancestors chose UK, absolutely beautiful land you lads have over there.
I've just returned from Hawaii and did some filming in some wind conditions that I expected to have to abort the flight. The mini 3 pro handled the wind amazingly, I would say 22mph is a safe limit, if the wind is blowing in the right direction (towards you) then you can push it.
The footage is great when you take the wind into consideration! I've had my mini 3 pro up in really windy conditions as well, it's a beast of a machine for its size 👍

@@IaninLondon hmmm... Thinking about it, quadcopter resistance to wind is done by tilt. When the downwind rotors are at maximum rotational rate, it can only reduce rotation on the upwind rotors to increase its tilt. Relative to a body of air, if the lift/mass/drag combined vector of forces ever exceeds 45° from vertical, the drone will lose altitude. At less than 45° it will move in the horizontal direction of its tilt. It's not intelligently prioritising, it's literally going at full tilt.

Great video Ian, I’m really impressed with the Mini 3Pro’s ability to deal with high winds. I managed some really great smooth footage of St Agatha’s Tower in Malta in very windy conditions, great piece of kit.

I just took my mini 3 pro out in constant 30mph winds and 46mph gusts and let me tell you I am very impressed. There was a time or two I thought it was going to flip but man you can hear it fight for its life lol. Would not do it again. Highly recommend not doing what I did lol. But it did amazing!!
Amazed how it was such steady footage. I flew my mini 2 at Davidstow on a very windy day and it was stable but struggled to fly back to where I was even on sport mode full throttle it was only doing 2mph max
Great video Ian. There had to have been either wind shear or rotor affecting the area you were flying in but in any case the turbulence from the cliffs would have made stable flight impossible. I might search out one of my old hang gliding sites and try the same experiment in smoother air (imagine gentle sand dunes at the beach with no obstructions in front).
Absolutely; there were undulating hills and cliffs all around me, and the wind was blowing out to sea, so there were wind sheers and turbulence all around me
Ian a question for you I have a mini 3 pro with 3 batteries and 3 amp charger why does it take ages to recharge batteries its seems to take 14 hours to charge the 3 batterers any ideas tried 2 different chargers ?
Great video Ian. The DJI drones are unbelievably stable in wind. I have a self-imposed limit with my Mini 2 of not flying at anything above a forecast 22MPH, but obviously there are stronger gusts at times and it copes with them admirably 👍🏼🛸💨😁
Did you notice that there is a zombie coming toward you on the pathway (ie Night of the Living Dead). He can be seen 45 seconds into your presentation. Thank you so much for demonstrating the wind boundaries of my mini three pro.
Good video - thanks. You said the gimball struggles in sideways flight. In your experience in extreme wind does the M3pro handle the wind better travelling forwards or backwards?
The maximum pitch is 40° flying forwards but only 35° flying backwards, so on that base is alone I would think it can handle the wind far better flying forwards...

The National Trust have a blanket ban on all their land, irrespective of whether flying a drone would in any way annoy someone else or affect wild birds or animals. I use my common sense; check no one will be affected and fly
I know everybody seems to refer to it as wind resistance but it isn’t really wind resistance. In the literal sense of the words it is more like wind handling capability don’t you think?
More wind than the Mini 3 can handle and it will go backwards..... You can take off and start backwards with a sports plane if the wind is strong enough..... Easy equation... Better start against the wind and have the craft being blown back home fore free then doing the opposite and get exhausted on the way home.
Almost. I often say "Fly out into the wind so it will Fly Home with the Wind". The Mini 3 actually has better ability to fly facing into the wind than flying backwards as it has a steeper pitch.

Thanks for this. We’ve had a lot of wind in Bermuda and this helps give me a bit more confidence about 18-20kts.

That's the problem with flying this type of drone in wind that's too high...you might not get it back

@@Jimmycricket- Hi. I tend to fly at 100-200 feet up on average, so I usually look at the predicted wind speeds at those heights 👍🏼😊
@@Jimmycricket- The one I use is AirData UAV 👍🏼. It gives you the forecast wind speed at ground level, 100, 200, 300 & 400 feet.

i took off in a gusty day 40 mph gusts took off bought it straight down lol. max nowadays i might go to 20 mph max but prefer calm 0-10mph

Worst I’ve seen was my Air2S, in sport mode it couldn’t return. So emergency mode landing was required 😮
