  • In this, the second segment on building a soprano ukulele, I form the Spanish Heel and Foot, shape the peghead and attach the sides to the neck. I feel that the Spanish Heel provides superior strength and stability compared to a dovetail or mortise and tenon joint. I use it on most of my ukuleles, as well as classical guitars.

Thanks, again for clarifying the neck angle with the top of the uke. I, also, like the wedge idea to get a great fit between the sides and the neck. That always is an issue.

Great work as usual, and a good tutorial as I had no idea about the way the sides and top fit to the neck. Fascinating! 👍

Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! Spanish Heels are a bit more work, but I feel they are worth the effort.

    Nice tutorial, thanks for sharing.
I was wondering if routing the little ledge on the Spanish heel would have been "easier", for a beginner like me, if you had routed it before cutting off the excess? Maybe not feasible if you need to confirm the top was flush with the neck?
I really liked your idea to glue the kerfed linings in after the top was on. I'm sure I would have tried to put them in before hand. I try to learn a little something from every video I watch. Thanks!

Thanks for those nice comments. Yes, you could certainly rout that ledge before trimming the neck, it would better stabilize the router. I've never thought to do it that way, maybe I will give it a try!

Can I ask what thickness you used on the sides and back? I think you said about .080 for the top. Thanks.

@mvecellio1 the sides are around 0.060 and the back is 0.070.
