Awesome. I thought about this kind of project made affordable every now and then for the past two years or so, googled it a few times without any satisfying results. Now it's done! Good job :)

I live in the shore of a very deep freshwater lake where there are legends of sea monsters (the ogopogo) and stories of sturgeon with eyeballs the size of one’s head. I would love to try something like this to get footage for locals and for myself - obviously not excepting to see those things but already it would capture peoples imagination.

Brilliant project, just wish it didn't involve littering the bed of the ocean with weights each time you use it

Joe M Thanks! The best part is that we didn’t use a single metal weight, you can use rocks from the seaside for that purpose. Zero environmental impact!

How did you attach the rocks without a carabiner?

      (neat project, btw)

You could use bags made from something like PLA, which dissolves in water, as well as a biodegradable zip tie.

The carabiner is there just for convenience, a loop of rope works just as well. You can just secure the rope to the rock using a zip tie or some knots

    Nice project!
I am working on a similar project, only we will use 2 BR cameras. I wonder if it is possible that you could give me more information about your work. It would serve me a lot
    Thanks!

Did you consider using submarine-style ballast instead, letting water into a tank that could be displaced by compressed air to get back to the surface? Would be even sweeter if it was set up to auto-release when it ran out of power, so you wouldn't have to worry about how long the batteries would last.
And regarding cooling of the camera, couldn't you utilize the temperature of the water, connect a heatsink between the camera and the outer shell?
Does the current setup produce any noise when underwater? And what is the limiting factor for the depth?

The limiting factor for depth is the strength of your pressure hull. ua-cam.com/video/pb5j9oeZCm0/v-deo.html Cheers, #SeattleRingHunter

Very nicely done! I would like to build a similar ballast release for a BlueROV2, will you be posting those details somewhere?

Yes, there are plans to release all of the plans for this project however I cannot confirm anything at this time.

Hi, I am interested in building an AUV, in case of emergency or whatever happens, I plan to use a similar recovery method than you. By dropping the weights, the AUV would rise instead of using the thrusters. I have tried to find information about the nichrome wire burn, but all I find is the nichrome wire being used to burn a string. Can you help me out by telling me which gauge and current did you use? Thank you a lot!

have you fought about electromagnet as the release mechanism for the wait there are some electric magnets self holding when they get energized and do not need a big electric current to release

We did think of that but unfortunately didn’t have enough time to test any prototypes yet. Will definitely experiment a bit more!
