Nice video shot of you passing your buddy, never get to see that. With this new blend of diesel, any temps below 20* ABOVE zero I double dose my additive. Also, put in #1 fuel or kerosene for the colder temps. Good to see other drivers still using their CB to check on a fellow driver these days. Stay warm up here with us northern folks.
Not only was the video of passing nice but the song/music was also a perfect fit. I've been following you for 3 years and always enjoy all your videos, especially Bailey. I hope the New Year is good to you.
Dan, there’s a guy on UA-cam called “Project Farm” who did a pretty comprehensive test recently on diesel anti-gel products. I believe one of the better products he tested was from “Hot Shot Secret”, another was from “Peak”. Lucas finished last in his tests. Just my $.02, Dan. I ran Hot Shot Secret in my diesel tractors and I had no issues, down to -10F. Stay safe, pats for Bailey.
Folks were truckers in the 80s, mom used to talk about one trip where my dad had bought a case of filters on sale, apparently nobody else had paid attention to the weather forecast and he was stopping every few miles helping guys get back on the road changing out filters
Hi Dan, diesel is made to different formulas depending on where you are and what time of the year it is. Diesel made for summertime and for use in the warmer states will be made to a formula that jells/ freezes at a higher temperature than diesel made for use in the cold. You were buying your diesel in the south where it is warm and then driving north into the cold. The diesel you bought was not made to be used in the cold.
Your filter problems was caused by biodiesel separating from your regular diesel while you were parked at home. Then you came north, the biodiesel is heavier than regular diesel has settled in the bottom of the tanks and at these temperatures it's starting to solidify. If you could look inside the tanks it would look like sand in bottom. The only cure for this problem is heat about 100 degrees to reliquidify the biodiesel. Fuel additives won't touch it. You'll eventually get it under control. Keep your tanks topped off, regular fill ups will help stir the fuel up to prevent separation. Welcome to the biodiesel plugged filter club.
Been there done that, Dan. In Jugoslavia I had to light a fire beside the fuel tank, and having run out of spare filters had to heat them up too, to melt the wax back out of them. Eventually wrapped the tank with cardboard and paper so the combination of that and the warm fuel returning I got up into Germany, and eventually back home to the UK
hey Dan;; when i drove back in the 70's an 80's we always put a gallon on transmision fuid in each tank when we filled up during the winter months. we never had a fuel filter freeze or clog up after we started useing the trans, fluid in out tanks. check it out.. stay safe out there. i watch you all t time...
We had better diesel back then now all this crap they sell want burn on a fire much less in a truck I always run 5 gallon of kerosene to 100 gallon of diesel I carry a 5 gallon can with me and when I fill up I look for a small pop shop fuel store or what ever name is on the place that sells kerosene it's usually the clear kind so unless Dot puts there tester in the tank your good to go and you get better mileage also so win win way I look at it but everyone stay safe and warm
Hi Dan Blessings from England , I has to smile about your filters freezing up I had the same problems back in 1982 . I ran a 14ltr Cummins and I knew other owner drivers who had the same problems , like you they had the additive and extra filters too ! . but me no sir I aint having some one im relying on as to whether i work or not no no . the Cummins has a water rail with a small hose at the back that hose then goes round to the DCA filter . I took the hose and fittings off , I then got bigger fittings that takes a 3/4" hose and a length of hose and new clips . I ran the hose round the back of the engine and on to the fuel line out to the tank and U turn back up to the DCA filter . the 2 fuel lines and 2 water lines i wrapped with insulation tape so they are a block of 4 pipes now and hot water heats the fuel coming from the tank and hotter going back to the tank . once you can do that first 1/4 of a mile in the morning nothing will stop that truck no matter how cold it gets ... Also make a boot out of carpet wrap it around your filter twice hold it with a little duck tape then a little for the bottom and more tape . i used a heavy duty plastic bag to slide over and a big hose clip for the top . I ran this system till 2010 when i gave up as a owner driver . some years later i welded shit trap tanks 8x6" at the bottom of my diesel tanks , a self cleaning system that works with any movement . in the early 90s my air dryer packed in the heating element fell out so as it had a brother on the chassis he was a bypass filter so i connected the two up and had a oil heated air dryer ... Praise the Lord ... keep warm n safe Dan ...
Put a fuel heater on the truck. However, you might might have got some bad fuel. That much treatment sounds like a lot. But that depends on the overall size of your tanks.
I enjoy both yours and Flat Out Truckings videos. You both put out great content. Thanks for all you do. Stay warm, stay safe, and I hope you don’t have any more trouble with gelling up. God bless you.
Hey Dan !!! Most T/S only treat their tanks below 28^ !! You either got bad fuel loaded with water or you need to put a fuel heater in the line from the tanks to the filters as that is what the ""NORTHERN "" trucks have on them !! Years ago as you know, most tanks had a sump on the bottom so you could drain the water waste out !! Today , they consider that a waste of $$$$$ !!! Have a good week ,if you can & hope the tanks will be OK !!!
Yep, high paraphin diesel will gell really quick. I'm in the far North, so they don't give you the option, all the stations switch to #1 diesel in ~September. Helps keep the fatalities down in -30 to -40 weather. Best wishes all.
Dan Dan the professional step deck man. Ya got to love when your adding fuel conditioner and new fuel and it’s still gelling up. Maybe you got some water in the tanks in Texas. Or your conditioner is not up to snuff. Could have been a little bit of both. I know when I run the ice roads way up in northern Quebec we had to buy our conditioner up there because the usual stuff couldn’t handle the really cold temperatures. Daniel your Pete and the Dorsey look so good. Well hopefully better trouble free miles ahead. Thanks for posting. Have a great and a safe day. Happy trails to you, D…
Sounds like you need to wrap some electric heater tape around your fuel filter housings. You could put them on a toggle switch or an outside air temperature switch.
To all recent CDL grads... that "thing" with cord Dan was speaking into... that's a CB radio. Get one and learn to use/monitor it while on the road. Turn it off at truck stops (stream entertainment or call family). Dan... your fuel issues have me curious/concerned. Have you ever experienced such frequency of issues in your years on the road? With filter changes AND additives... and you still issues... that's concerning. Stay warm. Stay safe.
Many years ago…early 80s, I was pulling a hopper bottom hauling oats out of South Dakota to Texas dairy farms. One extremely cold night I was having trouble and finally had to go into a shop to get my fuel warm enough to keep my engine running. I was using additive and it wasn’t helping at all. The mechanic told me to add several gallons of unleaded gas to each of my tanks and then put several quarts of ATF in each tank for lubricity and it worked. When I could get number one diesel I did that, but what he said worked. And in SD that night, it was way the heck below zero.
Stop fueling if the diesel looks yellow, brown, or black... it's better to just go to next truck stop to fill tanks with clean diesel. I went through 3 fuel/water separators last month due to bad diesel. Louisiana seems to have the clearest good stuff. Joplin and Armadillo = Trash Fuel ⛽️
When the temps got down in the teens I always ran 10% number 1 fuel in my tanks along with the conditioner, only ever gelled up once and that was wet frozen fuel not gel .I follow your content its like being in the saddle again , SPRING IS A CUMMIN hang in there !
Glad your safe and the truck is running better. Sure hope you get a good night's sleep after your hot shower, tomorrow will be much better 👍 HI BAILEY 🙏
Up here they have a winter blend and we also had a plug on the filters you unscrewed to drain water out this is Iowa man and know all about the fuel systems stuff you lucky you made it to the truck stop be safe and stay warm same way with air lines had a plunger you pulled to let moisture out of the lines and would use additive very seldom
It could be your heaters, for your return lines, the fuel is not staying hot returned into your tanks mr. DAN , when you leave the truck idol 3 or 4 hours screw your lids off and you hould see smoke steam like that mean the fuel is returning hot

Look into a FASS set up as they have models with fuel heaters in them. It stands for fuel air separation system. Much better than stock filters and as I said, they have available heaters for them so the fuel won’t do that to you.
Do they make fuel filter heaters or fuel heater system? Sounds like poor fuel or different cold grade like the number 1 type I used to see in the Pennsylvania mountains in the winter time back in the 1980's. From my limited point of experience living in Florida. Only spent 3 years in western NY working and college back in the 1990's and its cold winters. You all take care out there the cold is nothing to mess with and the conditions that come with it.
Ya you can get fuel warmers that reach down into the fuel tank like a block heater. They use antifreeze from the engine running though the tube to put some heat into the fuel. They're old fashioned but they work ok.
If I had an older truck, like that one, I'd run methyl hydrate through all fuel lines and put some in each tank. As a Canadian trucker, I've never had an issue when doing so. I know people that do it every year. One in particular does it on his 2005 Peterbilt 379 with the 6NZ engine and that CAT purrs like a kitten. It's also good to run through the trailer too. The additives that you can buy at truck stops, like Howes, doesn't seem to work. Lucas is the better option but doesn't work as well. Have never had to replace the fuel filter in the winter. Something to think about. I'm looking at buying a 1986 Freightliner with the big bunk, like yours, and that's exactly how I'd run it. Love older trucks
@hipcatwho Really? What about Amazon? I found it on Amazon, although it may be different stuff. I didn't really look in to it. I'm Canadian and can find it everywhere. I always thought it was weird what America will and won't allow vs Canada. Another example are Kinder chocolate eggs. The eggs with the toy inside is illegal, but you can buy the toy separate. How tf does that make sense? Anyway, I've only been trucking 21 years (in 2 weeks) but started in a '95 Freightliner COE with the super 10 transmission and a crawl in bunk, lol. We didn't use anything back then as I was still new and didn't know. The one thing I loved was the either button. 2 shots of that and she fired everytime, even in -40°C weather. The first time I ran methyl hydrate through the system was in my 2004 International 9200i with the Cummins. Alot of our drivers did at the time and it always worked well. We traveled mostly between Canada and the US and although Canada has additives in put fuel, not everywhere in America does. We ran mostly North and South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Florida, etc., where they don't add it. I was told, in North Carolina, that 2 inches of snow and the State shuts down, as they don't really get that kind of weather. I didn't believe it until one day when I left Troutman, NC and it was +30°C, or approx. 90°F. By the time I hit the top of 79 in PA, it was -2°C, or 28°F, and a whiteout. I barely managed to pull off into the rest area, and every car followed me in until they realized I was stopping, lol
I live in North Dakota and I don’t trust those additives at all anymore. Straight #1 below 0. I have same motor as you and only need to change water separator filter 99.999% of the time
I've had Motive for a couple years and I like it a lot. The only quibble I have is that it will kick you over to a standard 14 hour clock if you are trying to do split log. You have to keep an eye on that.
I don't know which treatment you are using. Project Farm just did a diesel additive video on his channel testing and comparing different brands. It was pretty eye-opening what these companies claim and what actually happens with their products in the freezer.
Not a trucker here. Can someone please explain why trucks don’t have some sort of anti freeze lines running around the fuel tanks, lines or even thru the tanks to keep the fuel warm ? Seems like a simple idea and something a fuel tank builder could design.
I run the northeast. During the winter i drop a bottle in each tank when i fill up if its under 28 degrees. Never have an issue. With the fuel anyway. The dpf system, well it doesnt like the cold. Hard time getting enougj heat to regen sometimes.
I use the motive ELD also. The only issue I have with it is the dash camera will pick up cars that get in front of you too close and then you will get a warning saying you were following a car too close. When it really wasn’t even your fault.
Checkout Chad Berrys Trucking channel. He uses Primrose additives and products. He lives in Northern Wisconsin and has never froze up ever using Primrose additives. They also are a dealer. Might be worth checking out. He had a video last year where a friend of his froze up and they took the gelled up filter off soaked it in the additive and the truck ran with the old filter.
👍👍 We use Power Service I think you do too. A lot of the problem is the crappy Biodiesels. Hard to find real Diesel anymore. You have to double the dose additives, says right on the bottle. Yes we got hammered here in STL. Good Luck Oh and subbed to your buddy Tom
Dan I run that electric fuel line from the tank to the fuel filter never run anything but number two fuel but you shut it off when it's cold at night you're going to get in trouble with that I don't know what the temperature there is but something's wrong if it's not below zero
Dan Sorry 😮for the problems..Do they formulate Diesel like they do for gasoline during the winter months. Great video of your rig filmed by your buddy. Again, you have the best videos and MUSIC! Stay safe
The most famous trucker on the road is asked if he is ok. We all follow you and wish to be able to help for safe travels.

I always try to run #1 through before it gets terribly cold to help try flush out any summer fuel in the system.
Now those are some good truckers on the cb radio taking care of one another
Be safe out there

I’m retired now but I used to make sacks out of house insulation to slip over the fuel filters to keep the heat in and the cold out.
Most people don’t realize the crap truckers go through just to keep America moving. Thanks Dan.
Thanks for this Dan. My truck did exactly the same thing a couple hours after I saw this video. I changed the filters and I'm back In business. 🙏

Project farm on youtube just made a competition between 10 different diesel additives, might be interesting for u.
Thank you for sharing your day. Fuel gelling inside the fuel filter is a problem that you do not need.
Keep Trucking, Dan, and keep it Safe. 👍🙏
😢You and Bailey stay safe and warm !!!
1:22 - Awesome shot, Dan!
You just got bad fuel , it wasnt that cold Sunday .
It would be difficult to imagine A better looking truck and trailer combination then what you are operating.
Fuel Tank Heaters are available from Paccar Trust a Canadian
%100 that sub freezing weather is not a joke
Cats return so much fuel my tanks are always warm to the touch.
@@johnchambers1380 problem is if you don't want to idle the motor alternative systems are effective

I think a lot of the problems are this new b20 fuel. To much biofuel and it gels faster. Just my thought.
I run the northeast. During the winter i drop a bottle in each tank when i fill up if its under 28 degrees. Never have an issue. With the fuel anyway. The dpf system, well it doesnt like the cold. Hard time getting enougj heat to regen sometimes.
With bio blended fuel you have to double your fuel additive.
Thank you
I use the motive ELD also. The only issue I have with it is the dash camera will pick up cars that get in front of you too close and then you will get a warning saying you were following a car too close. When it really wasn’t even your fault.
Welcome back dan, stay safe. Sounds like you got bad fuel to me
maybe you should try a different brand of fuel addatives
it's winter, time for anti gel. or number one if it gets cold enough (up north).
Safe travels!
Who's additive are you using? Check out Project Farm latest testing of diesel additive's.
Hope the next day went better
Sorry you had a Bad day but as you know it’s trucking I seen you parked at Rochelle this morning when I rolled in at around 2:00 am take care
Been there done that in Mn too.
👍👍
We use Power Service I think you do too.
A lot of the problem is the crappy Biodiesels.
Hard to find real Diesel anymore.
You have to double the dose additives, says right on the bottle.
Yes we got hammered here in STL.
Good Luck
Oh and subbed to your buddy
Tom
Did you ever consider getting a set of fuel filter 12v heaters for the cold temps….. just curious.
What brand of additive are you using, you may have gotten summer fuel. But I'd think that would have been gone by January.
Dan I run that electric fuel line from the tank to the fuel filter never run anything but number two fuel but you shut it off when it's cold at night you're going to get in trouble with that I don't know what the temperature there is but something's wrong if it's not below zero
Warmer weather fuel blend would be my suspicion.
That stinks. Would you be able to put the old filters inside the cabin to thaw them out, or is that a bigger hassle than it’s worth?
Change your fuel additive brand
Dan Sorry 😮for the problems..Do they formulate Diesel like they do for gasoline during the winter months. Great video of your rig filmed by your buddy. Again, you have the best videos and MUSIC! Stay safe
NOT A TRUCK DRIVER-But, is it possible to wrap the fuel tanks or fuel lines with a heater hose like RV folks use on their water supply hose?
In the old days we'd just put a gallon of gas in a 80 gallon tank(on my old rig), never had a problem with that way.
Probably not legal these days?
