  • As part of a recent event for #Iwillride college groups, the Authority took students out on a tour of high-speed rail construction sites at the San Joaquin River Viaduct and Cedar Viaduct. Hear from some of the students about how they see high-speed rail making an impact on the future of the state and their impressions on seeing the construction up close for the first time.

    So cool for those students to get the experience of what high speed rail infrastructure looks like and it’s nice too since they’re the ones who’ll ride it when it’s complete

    I will ride for sure.... I'm from Arizona and we're working on announcing a segment from Phoenix to Yuma to Indio to Palm Springs to Riverside/San Bernardino. Currently I'm commonly paying $300 to $600 round-trip to fly from Phoenix to Los Angeles, and I can fly to Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Bangkok, Japan, Hong Kong for that much! It's awful, and the flight door-to-door takes about 5 hours but high speed rail would only take about 2-2.5 hours from downtown to downtown. This will make me travel to California more to spend money in the local economy.... and relieving the airport will make flights from California airports even more affordable. Suggestion: as you clear the right of way mark how many miles you have cleared... before we know it you'll have 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% of the right of way cleared... that will show people that things are really moving... and they are! This will be a profitable project... just like it is almost everywhere on the planet. It's going to be wonderful, just need to get rid of the LA Times reporting that is so obviously controlled by the automobile and airline lobbies... everyone else sees that right?

      Ben Bethel you gave good news there. It’s a shame that the Union Pacific(Useless Pathetic) stopped using the Phoenix to Yuma line for Amtrak in 1996 & freight traffic. All Union Pacific did was give the Phoenix to also Angeles freight traffic to the trucking companies, they use that line for storage of surplus locomotives & surplus freight cars. I would love to see High speed passenger train service be nationwide. It would be great for a Los Angeles-San Bernardino-Palm Springs-Yuma,Phoenix-Tucson-El Paso-Midland/Odessa-Abeliene-Fort Worth-Dallas High Speed train route. I pictured it as being just close to 10 hours to 12 hours from Dallas to Los Angeles on a high speed train.

    Nice that everyone is getting involved. California is a pretty huge state, once built. I know it’s economy it’s going to grow even more. Thumbs up Cali !

    Like the student who said maybe it will go to New York one day, that's a bit far even for a 250 mph train! HSR beats a plane under a 3hr plane trip but not all the way to New York!

      @Despiser Despised You know what's a real boondoggle? Widening highways and building low density suburbs with huge parking lots that make people reliant upon cars and reduce their freedom and have negative impacts on everyone's health.

    I love that this is being built, but they way it's taken this long and with such high costs already, I don't know how they ever plan to complete the entire line. If XpressWest can built a line in 4-5 years (although this is still in design stages), why does this take so long?

      You'll notice that Xpress West hasn't built a line in 4-5 years, although they've been working on it for far longer than that. And Xpress West isn't going to build through several major cities along the way.
      It's a huge project and huge projects take time; especially when the far right is building major obstruction against every HSR project.
      Even in Texas the right is trying to pass new laws to stop a private company from spending its own money to build a bullet train.

      @@JustClaude13 weird how a state with low land values and a low cost of living can build a high speed rail line across flat terrain with a 350' change in elevation for much cheaper than a state with high land values, a high cost of living can build a railroad that has to cross 3 mountain ranges, serve a station with a 2,372' elevation difference across a greater distance.

      It takes a while because the geographic location and they are slow up the permit and design process so all needs are answered. They need to keep the negative peeps informed (the ones not for the infrastructure project) so there negative questions are resolved, so they can be proven that this will be viable for the changes made around Las angles. San Francisco won't be a problem it's pretty fucked up right now. They literally have peeps deficatin in the streets. Yuk!

    Ralph Vartabedian of the Los Angeles Times notes Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, running to succeed Brown as governor, has declined for the past two years repeated requests to be interviewed about the high-speed train project's future.
    Back in 2014, though, Newsom was more vocal and public when he reversed position. Like many institutional California Democrats, he supported the bullet train at first. But then once he recognized the costs growing out of control, he turned against it. He also said at the time that many Democrats felt the way he did, but few were saying so publicly.
    That was before he announced he was running for governor, though. Newsom's acknowledgement tracks with observations by Reason's Matt Welch and former editor Virginia Postrel that the political class in California knew full well this was all a fancy boondoggle designed to appeal those who glamourized zipping across the Golden State landscape in a shiny, superfast train.

    so how much of the gas tax will be funneled into this project? since it will never run at a profit, i guess it will always be a drain on the taxpayers of CA.

    Sure hope the Pacheco Pass tunnels don't progress at this pace. They've been showing videos of these two structures for two years now. For some reason they're continuing to insist that they'll be able to dig 32 large diameter tunnels totaling over 80 miles through very challenging terrain and have them in service in less than 15 years.

    All I have to say is move over farmers, of California. We are seeing progress of educated job's..... This will definitely change the landscape of the San Joaquin Valley, the future is computers machinery and robots in the field picking fruit and vegetables. The immigrants from Mexico central in South America countries like Venezuela Colombia Honduras Brazil chili Argentina. They we'll have to educate the youth to keep up with the world.

    Great to see this project is moving ahead. Any indications for when rolling stock invitation to tender might happen? Are you planning it yet?

      Of course not, because even though ordering, building and testing will take years and they should've already started that process in 2015 they decided to spend way too much money funding their politician friends and spent 10 years drafting and conducting environmental impact reports, we built a train across the country 150 years ago in less time with little to no knowledge of where we were even building it, I get that it's alot more complex then that now what with miles and miles of red tape, but still we have so much more technology at our disposal, but yeah we are still figuring out rerouting for like 1/3 of the system, not to mention it's probably going to be shut down completely next year when Jerry is out of office, it would've and still can work, but it would've helped there chances if in the past 10 years anything more than about a half mile of a unnecessarily large viaduct was built.

Just few weeks ago Fox news even accused Denmark of behaving like evil socialism, despite their country is better than US in every section on economy and social welfare.       But I have to say if HSR isn’t the future, then why do many countries have HSR and if they don’t, they are building one or have the plans for one. In fact Morocco recently opened of its HSR, making it the first of its kind in Africa. And here in the US we got Brightline which has partnered with Virgin Trains, who has operated trains over 100 mph in the UK

    Recent update: cost estimates have risen another 11 billion. This might go down as one of the worst infrastructure projects in history. That is even if this thing gets built. God help this state.

      Nitro Express no homes have been lost yet. But I’m not too sure about land.
