Great video Tom. out of curiosity do you think it’s better to run ads for a song to a Spotify playlist with all of your songs in it and the ad song on the top? Or do you think it’s better just to run the ad to the song itself? Obviously, with the playlist, you can get more streams from your ad if the listener continues to listen to the playlist, but I wonder if that affects the save rate for the song and therefore doesn’t trigger the algorithm the way that it would if the ad just went to the song. Hope that makes sense. Appreciate your videos!

Its crazy how as a diy musician (full time) nowadays i have three full time jobs. Shoot videos, edit, mix, make ads, push playlists, edit tiktoks, some days i barely have time to practice or compose because all im doing is visuals & promotion. Im not complaining, just stating that i wasnt aware. Back before covid i had so many gigs, i did zero marketing and always had opportunities and now im wondering if this whole streaming thing is even worth it. Not sure where to go from here. I used to sell cds for 10-15€ a pop while playing in random spots across town and now im amazed when i get 4k streams which pays less than that cd.
You’re basically telling artists to figure out how to best or better click-bait their target audience! This methodology only benefits exploitative marketing and promotion services that promise the same things you promise. Artists using these services will be in perpetual debt, constantly paying for so called marketing and promotion courses, and or services in hopes that they yield results, thinking that conversions and streams are the desired results when in actuality GETTING PAID is the only result that matters! And they’re not going to get paid creating a bunch of content to test on their target audience(s) for the purposes of generating streams, especially if the streams are coming from listeners they cannot directly retarget to retain for future promotions, etc! They’ll just be paying more and more money for vanity stats that mean nothing!
Man, I understand the frustration. It comes from a very real place. But I think you're confusing me with the majority of "music marketing / attention hacking / pay for playlisting and streams" crowd. I may be in a parallel lane, but it ain't that one. This video speaks to a small piece of an otherwise complex and multifaceted puzzle exploring what it takes to find happiness, success, fulfillment, and yes, revenue, as an artist, creator, and entrepreneur.
