No matter one’s opinion of cyclists or their riding habits, they are practically defenseless against the smallest sedan, never mind a truck. Drivers simply have to take the high road - not only around cyclists who abide by the rules of the road, but even around selfish cyclists who don’t. Shaving a few minutes along the way can’t possibly outweigh the risk of maiming or killing a fellow human being.
People who insult this cyclist clearly have never cycled. It's ILLEGAL to ride of the pavement. And the highway code says that you should pass a cyclist the same way you should pass a car. Grow up you haters.
TiconderogaX Who did I ignore? Stay off the FOOTpath/sideWALK then name should be enough. Try to understand how traffic works, and try to understand the rules in your head are not the rules/laws, I think it is best for everyone to stick to the actual rules/laws rather than for everyone to think their own version is better, and expect others to mind read each different version as they meet them on the road! Grow up, the World doesn't revolve around you!
TiconderogaX So you can't actually point to any, well done! I do not live in New Zealand anymore, but the point is you are commenting on a video from NZ, where NZ laws count, not the laws you make up in your head! I am now living in the UK another country that drives on the left with the same laws (which country did you think this video was from?). No vehicles where impeded in any of my videos, impeding traffic is bad, and I have never done it. A few petty minded dicks think following a car at 10 mph slower than they would be going (not impeded) is not as bad as a few seconds waiting to pass a cyclist safely (not impeded). impeding traffic is to cause a meaningful delay, not some feeling in your childlike mind. Yes, grow up, you clearly need to if you think commuting by bike is a sign of not being grown up, even though I have never commuted by bike, and you claim to also ride a bike, you think riding a bike is a sign of not being grown up? Can you explain that to me please?
TiconderogaX The law is that cyclists can (and are advised to) move further out into lanes that are too narrow to share safely, your feelings are that cyclist can't/shouldn't. You also think a cyclist claiming the lane is blocking traffic, even when they are extremely easy to pass. Also, as you can't even find anything better to do on Christmas Day than troll on UA-cam it appears you are a very sad lonely troll, not that anyone was surprised!
My advice : carry a safety wing on your right hand. Drivers are more concerned for a slight scratch on their painting than for a cyclist's safety on the road.
Riding too close to the curb is dangerous on a narrow road. It encourages drivers to pass when it is not safe (within 3') and can cause them to either hit the cyclist or hit another car while trying to make the pass. Cyclists that take road safety classes are encouraged to "take the lane" on narrow lanes to prevent that. They are told to be visible (bright colors, lights, etc) and be predictable (no swerving, consistent speeds, etc) and to allow motorists to pass when it is safe. Even to use hand signals to say when it is safe or pull to the side and slow down to "release" any cars that get stuck behind. If you cannot pass with at least 3' of space or would not have enough room to jump into the other lane (another car too close ahead or traffic approaching from the other side) do not pass. Cyclists if you have cars behind you and an area to pass opens up, "release" the cars. Get over when it is safe and they have room, signal them by, slow down. And merge and take the lane again when done. The funny thing is that sidewalks seem safer. But apparently research is showing they aren't. It makes it more likely that a cyclist can hit a pedestrian (especially those with earbuds in and not listening or being aware of the surroundings... I always preferred to only put 1 earbud in so I can hear or better yet just go for a speaker), crash while avoiding an obstacle because the sidewalk is too narrow (avoiding a pedestrian, avoiding a tree, hole, glass, etc) and it makes it harder and less predictable for motorists at crosswalks and driveways. A cyclist on a sidewalk may be obscured by bushes, trees, fences, etc until it is too late to avoid a collision. A driver may be turning at an intersection and not expect someone to cross as fast as a cyclist. Slowing at crosswalks when the cyclist has the right of way can also make it hard for cars that do see them coming. Say I'm going through a light and the guy next to me wants to turn and is waiting for me. I slow down to check the other direction and now if he looked away I'm in his lane longer than he expect. I'm less predictable which means it can cause an accident. Also from the perspective of a cyclist breaking is hard. We should do it anyway when needed. But a cyclist that stops has to clip out of their pedal, downshift, and stop. Then they have to clip back in and accelerate (and acceleration is not just simply holding down a gas pedal. Getting back up to a decent speed can be hard), and shift up gears. That does not justify a cyclist behaving unsafely but just something to keep in mind. I'm betting that is why some people filter like in the video. They can coast up to a light, hope it turns, let traffic pass and start up again without having to start from a dead stop and clip back in to the pedals. I'm not a fan of filtering like this rider did at the stoplight but other than that he did everything people on bikes are supposed to do. The driver was frustrated by the slower bike on the road and since society has done a bad job of creating dedicated bike lanes in areas and/or educating both cyclists and drivers how to co-exist on the same lanes, situations like these happen a lot. Cyclists that take the lane are doing the safe thing. But they also need to obey traffic lights, stop signs, and other road laws. Cars need to pass when it is safe. At least 3' is the recommendation that I often see. And don't anyone talk about the cyclist not belonging on the road. Tax on fuel is not the only source of funding for roadways. Property tax, sales tax (you know for the bike and all of their gear and equipment), and any other state and local taxes help fund things like roadways. Personally I'd be fine with cyclists needing some sort of licensing and training class when riding on roadways. Hell I'd love to have a chance to learn from experienced people and practice in groups. As it is I stick to canal trails and subdivisions but I'm not a commuter. But learning how to properly travel on the roads would be nice. I would not joy ride during rush hour. But most likely this video was shot during someone's commute home and probably not a joy ride at a busy time of day. Also before I picked up cycling as a hobby I had the same frustrations as all other drivers. "Get off the road! Move over if you're going to be slow! You're going to cause an accident!" The problem isn't that drivers or cyclists are jerks. The problem is lack of education for how to share the roads since sidewalks aren't safer and many areas do not have great bike trails that people can use to commute. And for any cyclist, the best way to learn (other than taking one of those vehicular cycling classes some areas have) is to find a group and practice with experienced riders. Experienced riders will take the lane properly, communicate with drivers well, and keep their group safe. I know that many responses would be about cyclists not belonging on the roads. That of course riding along the curb is safer and sidewalk is even safer. Trust me, I thought the same thing even a few months ago. And even as a newbie cyclist I'm afraid to get into the roads. I'm not fast enough, not good enough at merging, not comfortable enough to react well if something bad happens. But many cyclists posting these videos are people that know their stuff. Chances are they know what they are doing. And taking the lane is the safest option for the cyclist, the driver and the pedestrians on the sidewalk. If you are really pissed with it, complain to the municipal or state government to setup more bike lanes or trails so commuters don't have to use roads.
I need to clarify a comment I made in regards to this incident. My reply was for cyclists in the United States of America in the north america continent. I was corrected that passing as seen in the video is legal in the country of the incident ,my bad. Since receiving that information I think the fault is of course the driver of the motor vehicle. I sincerely hope everyone is okay. I myself have been hit by 8 cars in 6 years since deciding to ride to work by bike (10-14K a year). 1 TBI and 4 more concussions. BELL hates me because of their replacement policy for accident victims. 4 helmets in 6 years, not all could be claimed. Everyone PLEASE RIDE/BE SAFE. FYI, here is my tagline to my email! “Bicycling is a big part of the future. It has to be. There’s something wrong with a society that drives a car to work out in a gym.” Bill Nye (the Science Guy!).
I dont see anything wrong with what the biker did here, he had the common sense not to undertake the truck when traffic started moving off which is good practice. As for road position there are grids and the camber of the gutter to avoid. The orange car is fully to blame here
qwertinezz The limit is just that, the "limit" and this is a two lane road, with each lane too narrow to share so the drivers need to use the other lane to pass safely anyway. There is nothing wrong with filtering, it is normal, legal practice.
+qwertinezz He is entitled to move up the inside of the traffic. Cyclists can pass on either side. He was taking up the amount of space required to feel safe riding (primary position) meaning the driver would need to wait for a safe opportunity to pass him. Which this driver didn't. Everyone is required to ride/drive below the speed limit or they would be breaking the law.
It appears to me that the push bike rider was using more of the lane than they needed, resulting in the near miss with the car... Your law states that the vehicle driver must leave 1.5 metres clearance between the push bike and themselves - hence the push bike rider should have to do the same....
Just remember if you try to hit a cyclist and you actually hit them and he/she crashes and has to be rushed to the hospital the cyclist will Sue you as motorist, county/state,etc for road rage and this is coming from an attorney. Cyclist has the right to Sue the driver, county, city, etc if the driver hits them.
That is the case for civilized countries, this is New Zealand, the Police didn't even turn up to the crash were an oncoming driver turned across my path, knocking me off and putting me in hospital. They still hadn't done anything three days later when I was discharged, they didn't even charge the driver for failing to report knocking me off and injuring me as required by NZ law. There is no way (unless you have a lot of money) of pursuing the drivers for damages in NZ (I was informed of this by Citizens Advise). There is also no requirement for private vehicle insurance in New Zealand so not only can the drivers declare themselves bankrupt if they are actually pursued, but as bad driving can't mean drivers are forced to pay higher premiums, there is very little to deter bad driving. Well, you could say the Police, and points on licences, but the Police are only interested in speeding drivers, and banned drivers just continue to drive.
He's clearly not in the middle of the road. The driver is just being a jerk. You can see from the video the front wheels are turning to cut the cyclist off. Typical whimp behind the wheel.
Bicycle Crossroads Everytime I see these videos the same scenario. Not enough room for the cyclist and the car driver cuts him up.Cycle paths needed because this system isn't working.
foppo leeuwerke Building cycle paths would be great, in the mean time if the Police enforced the law it may turn out there is no need for the expense, I guess we'll never know, unless the Police decide to work for a living...... like I said, I guess we'll never know!
Push bike riders don’t belong on the roads. They are pedestrians on wheels and belong on the footpaths where they share with the other people. Roads were designed for horse drawn vehicles and then motorised transportation .... I don’t see where the push bike rider fits into the motorised section
@@toma4352that’s nice you feel like that. But no cyclist is going to risk getting a ticket riding on the sidewalk just so the vroom vrooms don’t get inconvenienced for half a second. If you don’t like the law, petition the government. Stop punishing the people who are doing things correctly
@@mollyprysunka7741 but you aren’t doing things correctly. You don’t give way. You don’t indicate your intentions. You fail to stay to the edge of the road. You don’t pay any money to be a nuisance on the road. So you see, you don’t belong on the road !!!
Its futile arguing who is at fault here. Its obvious the driver of the car is an inconsiderate wanker. But most drivers are still saying the cyclist is at fault.I really cannot fathom the mind of a driver that thinks he has a right to endanger a cyclists life,in order to overtake them.I gave up caring what motorists think of me,a long time ago.I ride safely and have never deliberately run a red light.I do see some very bad cyclists, but where I live I see a hell of a lot more bad motorists, but on the whole most people behave themselves.UA-cam gives the impression that all cyclists are Whining babies.
To everybody commenting "ride closer to the curb" or similar things, it is simply not safe to do so, I normally do that when cycling (I don't want confrontation with another driver through taking the lane, which is legal but large amounts of nz drivers are un-aware of that) and often I have come within inches of being squished between a parked car and a passing car. It simply isn't safe. And it is illegal to cycle on the footpath in NZ, so a cyclist is left with no other choice as most cities here have bad cycling infrastructure.
I'll never understand why so many drivers are like this. The irrational hatred of cyclists is ridiculous. I never hated before I cycled and I take extra care passing cyclists now I do cycle since there were things I want aware of like just how destabilising it is to pass a cyclist when you're driving fast.
No matter what side of the argument you are on...if you deliberately drive dangerously too close to a cyclist, then you are nothing more than a snivelling coward! The cyclist is venerable, you are in the safety of your tin shell moving faster... The holden driver is a coward end of story! Cyclists are doing us car drivers a favour, Give them room... I do it no problems and I drive truck and trailer!!
I drive for a living.....i see a lot of stupidity on our roads..........i am not a cyclist but i strongly believe that everyone has a right to use the road without being harassed by idiots.........car drivers should count the bicycles on the road and consider each and everyone of them as one less car contributing to congestion.........acts of stupidity such as this one always have a sad ending......take care!
I have an interesting story. In January this year I flew out for a 3-month cycle tour of NZ from Germany. People there told me how dangerous it could be, but I decided to cycle how I do in Germany - normal clothing, old road bike, no helmet, just casual. I seemed to be the odd-one-out because all the Kiwi cyclists I saw looked as if they were training for Tour de France. In 3 months, I cycled 4000kms and had no problems at all. I actually found all road users very courteous, and even the police weren't bothered about my non-helmet usage. Maybe it was because I looked like a "normal" person, and that they could see the person instead of seeing just another cyclist?
I have seen a great many "normal looking" people on bikes passed very dangerously, not sure why you would be any different. I never saw an adult riding without a helmet, but strangle heard about, and saw on TV the Police stopping people without helmets, but the Police do tend to actually do their job when a camera crew is following then, otherwise, no so much!
How long was he banned for after you showed this to the police? And will he ever be able to get insurance again after you've shown this to all the insurers?
Dave Moore Sadly, this being New Zealand, it took the Police five months to decide to do nothing, and as New Zealand does not require vehicle insurance there is no point contacting any insurers. Even if the driver had been banned for a while he would not have to worry about his dangerous behaviour effecting his motoring costs. This is why New Zealand's roads are amongst the most dangerous in the developed World.
It is not possible for a car (especially one this size) to share this lane and give the New Zealand minimum 1.5 meter clearance for passing a cyclist. If you have mental stress when see a cyclist in the recommended position in the lane but you feel a cyclist isn't in the position you feel is correct then driving just isn't for to you. consider less stressful modes of transport. If this driver has the same condition as you he should do the same, or maybe just buy a much smaller car, I have seen this driver many times and he always drives on his own and aggressively, perhaps he needs the big car to compensate for something as it is never needed to carry friends or family.
benzlover55 Get some training from a qualified instructor on road positioning, that's what I did. The more traffic there is the more important correct lane positioning is. If you have trouble finding a cycling course, read a book or two on the subject like Cyclecraft and The New Zealand Road Code, that's what I did. Good luck.
***** what's wrong with hugging the left a little? I'm not saying go on the curb, just a little bit, like 5 inches or so... and I don't live in NZ, doesn't matter but thought I'd mention.
benzlover55 Watch any road vehicle (other than a tram) and you will see they stray much more than 5 inches, staying that close simply isn't possible without serious risk of eventually hitting the curb, additionally, stormwater drains will become a serious hazard, and swerving out for each one out with a motorist passing that is not prepared to give an inch let alone 5 and you will soon see the danger. Also note video Sudden Gust of Wind - Give Cyclists 1.5 meters
Over here we have cyclepads almost everywhere, but still, In city driving like here cyclists dont pollute and take little space, while cars are no faster, so they should get be encouraged instead off driving on the road between cars with some isolated selfish drivers
According to your nickname and about your reaction I guess you are Dutch too! You are totally right about what you wrote down! Over here (in the Netherlands) there is in general a peaceful interaction between drivers and cyclists. Also where they have to share the road when there is no separate cycle path.
I found a slap on a car door as they go by with your hand or foot as in my case my lock and chain always scares the shit out of them and they take off trying to get away thinking they hit you.
He not in middle of the road and why would any think so. He off the back left bumper off the 4x4 and never strays to the middle. Legally he has a right to take the whole lane if he wished. Funny how people make rubbish up to try and win a argument. The law states you drive your car in a safe manor, the whole reason you take a test. Saying your a cyclist and then saying he taking the whole lane, just proves you're not a cyclist.
Take some cycling lessons or read some books on it. In the mean time remember that regardless of your poor understanding (or attitude) trying to hit another road user is a very serious offence
In my experience It's pretty much exclusively Commadores and utes that rage at cyclists. I've learnt to cycle disguised as a construction worker with a husky hi-vis jacket. Not only is it more visible, but it confuses the bogans, inhibiting their inherent hatred of minorities from running me over.
+Alex Arnold That would not surprise me, a study showed that a cyclist with Police written on there back would get much more clearance, the fact that drivers have time to read cyclists backs before deciding how close to buzz them made it clear that the problem was not visibility, the problem is how much of a threat you are to the person passing you. As it is, with the Police refusing to charge drivers for unsafe passing of cyclists, cyclists are not a threat to drivers licences, so the dangerous passes continue. What you do to be safe is similar to what I do on my motorbike, I don't bother with Hi Viz, I dress like a gang member, that way I am given more clearance than cops get on motorbikes, again, proving it is not being seen that counts, it is being seen as a threat that gets you respect on New Zealand's roads. If the Police were serious about public safety, they would run campaigns with plain clothed cops on bikes, charging unsafe drivers, no doubt word would soon get around, and cyclist intimidation would stop. Failing that, if the Police actually did their jobs we would still see improvement.
ismir egal I made a formal complaint, I got a signature to prove it had been received, they "lost" the complaint. I gave the Police a copy of the complaint they "lost" they then "lost" that, eventually, they replied 5 months after the incident saying they decided it was not bad enough to act on. The Police have "lost" a lot of my complaints, they strangely managed to find two of them that were followed up by a Green Party MP, that sadly also felt that cyclists were not worth protecting from dangerous motorists - that was after the Green Party approached me for videos, and I gave them two that were much worse than they were looking the challenge the Police on. If you are a cyclist in New Zealand, do not trust Julie Anne Genter, an MP for the Green Party, see was in agreement that drivers should not be charged for passing cyclists dangerously (does not sound like a Green Party policy to me, but there you have it!).
***** thanks for the fast awnser and sorry for my bad english and sorry for you that you did not got revenge. But i live in Germany and yepp, the Green Party here is as sick as yours i guess. just a view days ago Volker Beck, MP of the GP and speaker on religious issues and homosexual rights is caught in the act with METH-Amphetamine......and he is one of them who wants to legalize pedophilia and inzest for real. do you think a Party with such a leader will do ANYTHING good for (moto)-cyclists????? or any normal human being??
ismir egal WOW, when you said sick, you really meant it!! That is shocking, there seems to be a new type of Green Party these days, it has been taken over by idiots at best, or people deliberately climbing the ranks in order to sabotage the party. It would be interesting to see what happens to your sick Green Party pervert, and if he somehow manages to retire wealthy.
Hey motorist you heard about the Move over law right its where all motorist required by state and federal law to move over when emergency vehicle, tow truck, or slow moving vehicle is ahead. You can be cited and ticketed for failing to clear the lane or move over. No question ask the law went into affect last year.
Typical dismissal of bicycle related incidents as if it means nothing. Just ask them if a 40 tonne HGV did that with the same speed differential to them in a police car would they look at it differently. We all know the answer. As for the requirement for bright colours/lights, that's a massive red herring and there are zero facts surrounding that making you more visible. The Transport Research facility here in the UK did extensive testing and found jersey colour day or night makes jack shit difference. Either you look and see or you don't. Banning black/dark coloured motorvehciles would be interesting to see if it improved the crash statisics, (it won't). I now press for common assault charges instead of careless/dangerous driving as if I am fearful of my safety/have had violence (to the mind) thrust upon me that is a common assault defined in law. It's less easy for the police to dismiss.
Yes, very typical of lazy cops (the vast majority of cops), they only act in self interest. I do always wear what the idiot Police would claim to make me more visible and use bright (daylight visible) lights, but that is only so the Police don't suggest I could have been more visible. If a driver wants to threaten a cyclist, they will, if anything, advanced warning of a cyclist will only give these aggressive drivers more time to plan the threat.
Not ideal for a cyclist to ride up on the inside of waiting traffic. Im not against cylclists but some do take risky chances like here in the UK they often run a red light.
Not at all risky if (as shown here) you don't pass moving traffic by merging as soon as the traffic starts moving. I am back in the UK myself now and the first cyclist I can remember seeing ran a red light, but it may have only remembered him as the first because he ran the light.
the problem is that once the cyclist overtakes the standing cars he gets to the front and there is no room then for the cars to overtake him and they have to travel at his speed until he turns off the road.
never seen a cyclist give way at a 'giveway' line, or stop at a stop sign . Seen plenty riding down the wrong side of the road, on the pavement at high speed, inbetween traffic
Why did this cyclist not pull up and stop behind all the traffic. Instead was able to move onto the yellow line and pass all the stopped cars, passing that car that already looked aggravated when he passed the cyclist the first time.
Bicycles do not have to wait behind traffic, bicycles are able (in the Road Code) to filter through traffic. The car that was driving too fast for the conditions is a regular sight in West Auckland and is very well know for dangerous driving in this area. What nobody in this area understands is why the Police refuse to do anything about the driver. The belief held is the the driver is a cop or linked to the Police and that is why the driver's behaviour continues. This driver doesn't change behaviour, and doesn't only target cyclists, the horn being sounded was a car the driver cut in front of. This driver is aggressive around all road users (at the time of the video the vehicle had been owned by the same person for the last 10 years)
I really find it unnerving that I may share a road with the multiple idiots who comment that the cyclist is somehow at fault for the actions and decisions taken by the driver of the orange car. I hate car drivers who cannot cope with a bicycle on the road in front of them, make stupid errors, compromising the safety of another human being and then blame the cyclist. Bunch of dicks. As a car driver, who can competently and safely pass another road user, I find comments such as snowcatxx87's offensive. You do not speak for me, you are just highlighting your own lack of driving skill as well as refusal to accept responsibility for your own actions.
IAmTheBest There was even more space to my right, and as cyclists are allowed to claim the lane to prevent incompetent drivers from sharing narrow lanes that would have been better.
IAmTheBest agree... Cyclists think they're ensuring their own safety by riding in the middle of the road when they're just making idiots angry who will pass them like this.. Ride on the left and respect your position, I'd rather be humble than a potential pancake on the road...
Haider Aljabori You need to understand why cyclist ride further out, and why cyclist know it is safer, it may sound dangerous, but it is recognised as safer, and I get fewer dangerous passes now I ride in the safer position
Haider Aljabori I also only get passes like this when I claim the lane. You known, a driver can't squeeze passed within the lane, which is extremely dangerous, so to show they don't like being forced to use another lane, as per the law, some drivers, that would pass dangerously anyway, will then do this type of pass instead of the more dangerous pass they have planned. The point is the driver would have passed dangerously anyway, but this way less of the dangerous drivers will actually make a dangerous pass after having had to find a safe gap in the first place. This is New Zealand, some drivers will target cyclists regardless of conditions, that is just what happens in a country with lazy scum for cops. ua-cam.com/video/0AMHm5pqbqE/v-deo.html in a country that celebrates violence.
This is me in the drivers possition ua-cam.com/video/Z4tQEpsVK4w/v-deo.html so what is your point?? In order to give the minimum clearance of 1.5 meters drivers must use the other lane, don't you understand that, claiming the lane is done to encourage incompetent drivers to do the right thing.
+NZ Cyclist TVL Well then You should of done the right thing and stayed on the dotted yellow line and not use up a whole lane for yourself. Think about the 10 cars behind you
Mx 3 You mean the sideWALK that is for walking on and that is illegal to cycle on? You are wrong, I can see it, what is you point about seeing the FOOTpath?
Mx 3 Cyclists are told to ride about a meter from the edge of the road, and to move further into the lane to discourage incompetent drivers from thinking it is ok to unsafely share a lane. So you'd be one of those drivers, you should be thanking me for helping you to drive
I'm a cyclist, anyone who rides a bike like this should be banned. why the fuck is he 2 metres from the curb?? he'll be a quadriplegic before he knows it.
I you really were a cyclist how would you not know it is safer to ride out of the gutter and in a position that discourages incompetent drivers from sharing a lane that is too narrow to be shared? If you are a cyclist why is you first thought not how dangerous the driver is, and that the driver should be banned for deliberately trying to hit a cyclist that is riding as per the way he was instructed by a trained instructor, and as per the New Zealand Road Code?
I'm not saying the orange car isn't being deliberately vindictive (although we can't say why from this clip) . What I will say is that I dare anyone including NZTA nutters to show me a road in Auckland where any Lane is wide enough to allow 1.5 metres space for a Cyclist or anything else. The lanes in NZ are barely wide enough for a car. So what they are saying is that a Cyclist simply has full use of the lane regardless of time of day (rush hour). This seriously contributes to motorist anger against cyclists.
Northern Cyclist TVL I said the driver was a jerk. I also said that a lot of these angry Cyclist clips don't show what causes the reactions. I also said that leaving a 1.5m gap (as quoted under the clip) is not realistic. Please don't start quoting the road code again as it is never enforced aga8nst cyclists only for them. Cyclists never have any responsibility but always shove it in people's faces. My comments are my observations not debates. I have found cyclists expect the whole congested traffic system to just understand they mean well even when holding up traffic and get in the way. They see everyone else as selfish even when they are so I'm not debating it's a lost cause.
+Arlem Fraznikito So what does your mind have you seeing me doing that could justify, in the mind of this idiot driver, trying to hit me? You never know, if I get round to it I may one day find the lead up to this, all 20ish Kilometers of it! But for now, I am curious as to what you think is likely to have, or could have, caused this.
***** I'm sure you did nothing (and I mean that sincerely). All I said was that there a lot of angry Cyclist clips and I'm sure some leave out what they did. My point about the silliness of expecting 1.5m in Auckland particularly is that it is impractical. So quite possibly many cars on Auckland roads have had frustrations of cyclists blocking roads in peak hour traffic. Even on a motorbike I've noticed cars getting more angry over stuff. Does this excuse his behavior? Of course not. Even if you did do something it's inexcusable to put your life at risk. So I'm not debating behavior just the overall picture in Auckland and that it's not always practical to cycle in peak hour. Judging from UA-cam clips this would be true of London as well.
+Arlem Fraznikito The majority of cyclist's UA-cam videos in NZ are mine and I have always been forthcoming to the Police with all video evidence including the time leading up to the incident, so I have no idea why with the majority of cases in NZ being of this nature, why you would even start to think cyclists are to blame in any way for the way aggressive drivers behave. Do you not think cyclist just get angry because there are drivers deliberately threatening them in the most cowardly way? The is nothing impractical about cycling, or passing cyclists on Auckland's roads ua-cam.com/video/rq0FXMFpJDI/v-deo.html cyclists do not cause delays, car congestion causes delays. I have never been delayed by a cyclist, however, cars have added 30mins to my 20-25 minute commute. They just sit there, one behind the other, without a single complaint about the car in front not pulling into the gutter and stopping them from moving forward and gaining four seconds.
***** No you dont get my point, you think he 'tried' to hit you but he probably was tryna scare you, if he had intentions to hit you he wouldve run you over easily
I̶f̶ when that vehicle is involved in a fatal crash, I hope the someone's lawyer finds your videos, and then asks why the police failed to get the car/driver off the road.
There is a grass verge in the middle of the road, I have never ridden in the middle of the road. I have ridden in the centre of the lane at times as recommended in the New Zealand Road Code (and elsewhere) but in NZ many people are to stupid to understand how to pass cyclists safely, even when you help them with correct road positioning. The people that struggle most are often wearing Police uniforms, it appears this clothing lowers I.Q.s considerably! What are you wearing today? your grammar would suggest a specific kind of uniform. :-)
Yes, you would think so, but having tried it in New Zealand it is very likely to offend a motorist and give them the urge to try to knock you off. I am claiming the lane more now I am in the UK with far more civilised results. You need to think that New Zealand only has dumb Police Officers that love power tripping as much as the dick in the orange car (as the Police lost this complaint three times it is very likely he has Police connections), drivers know this and know it means they can drive dangerously around vulnerable road users
you are way too friendly as a cyclist... i would have put a dent in his car for sure, i work on my cycle (postalworker) and wear steeltoed shoes. also my cycle is much stronger and heavier, it´s a 1964 juncker impala, so it is not so easily damaged.
pete smith that's why i have a "tank" of a bicycle (actually i have 6 of those), steeltoed shoes, a chainlock and very strong legs... i don't hesitate to make use of those items.
Your lucky hit didn't hit you harder. Drivers like this and the commenter below are the problem on the roads. I would contact a attorney and not try and deal with the police on your own. Even if there aren't any criminal charges you could possibly bring the driver up on a civil charge, although I'm not very familiar with the laws in your country.
There is more than enough here for a Dangerous Driving charge, Careless Driving would be far too easy to press, and charging Unsafe Passing would be a joke. The problem is the cops here are a bigger joke
I thought it was satisfyingly good. Nice slow motion of the juicy bits that really show the distances and sneaky swerves of mr flashy over sized engine wizz wheels not doing something useful on the Planet type C***. Sorry! did I say that?
Are you stupid? why would anyone think it was a good idea to call a power crazed cop with a gun anything other than sir to their face. Still, they know what everyone is thinking, and why they are not trusted, if you can't see that you are a fool.
Whenever I see a video from NZ it is bad and I mean BAD - nothing like British bickering about feet of space (in 75% of them). What is worse - your police seems to be in total solidarity over getting cyclist discouraged from being on the road. They act as if it would be their mates driving. Shouldn't it go to TV or papers? Maybe if it would reflect on reputation of local governments, it would make a change? I feel sorry for you guys and I wish you a quick change.
This has nothing to do with bad drivers, its clear that for some reason the biker feels that he has enough room and it is okay to pass the line of stopped cars on the left, and then not leave enough room for them to pass him when he is going slow. Move over your tire is a half inch wide
I hope the police caught that ahole ive been thru the same thing riding my bike may a 18 wheeler play with that car the same way and see how they like it. Two cameras two wheels a good lawyer thats how i roll....
Yes, but the Police yet again (after about three months) "lost" the complaint, I gave them a copy and eventually five months after the incident the Police called to ask me about a "close pass" complaint I made, they said they were about to contact the driver but in the end didn't charge him.
like come on people. the guy on the bike could move over WAY MORE ignorant he is. thinks hes the man on his bike. even tho people hav to give him 1.5m he moves more into the middle of the lane. looks like he wants to piss people off. id rage at him. id take his bike off him. looks like he wants a fight or something. MOVE over more into gutter. stop trying to me all LIKE MY ANCESTORS FOUGHT FOR THIS LAND. Its called sharing is caring.
In situations like this you would be better taking the footpath, only to be given a ticket. I've done the footpath route because of traffic, especially at intersections, was ticketed for trying to be safe, cop was so arrogant wouldn't listen, so wrote in and pleaded my case and was let of ticket.
haha im a cyclist myself but unfortunately the cyclist riding here was asking for it slightly, i mean theres no need to ride that far into the road, moving to the left just off the white line is where you should be...not where the tarmac is worn and silky if you get what i mean, you don't need that much room, thats just silly and asking for it. :)
My position is as recommended by New Zealand cycling instructors and the New Zealand Road Code, how can following official guidelines mean I am asking for a driver to try to harm me? So you are a cyclist, but think it is funny when someone tries to harm a cyclist that is following the official advise that cyclists are given? Take a cycling course before preaching correct cyclist position! Why not post videos of your preferred way of cycling so everyone can benefit from your wisdom, especially as you feel your opinion as better the all the recognised sources of information on road cycling?
You keep over taking the cars at the lights and forcing them to pass you again. That's pure stupidity on the cyclist's part and instigates the road rage.
Instigating road rage by passing someone? seriously? Hand your licence in you are unfit to drive, actually, I don't think you should be allowed out anywhere unsupervised, unless you are just a puny keyboard warrior.
***** I ride my bike to work every day. You're an example of a thoughtless cyclist. You keep forcing them to pass you at every single light instead of waiting behind the cars that have already passed you. Is that extra few feet worth pissing off all the drivers? I don't know what the rules are in New Zealand, but if you want the cars to treat you like an equal than you should act like an equal and not the spoiled prat that you're acting like in your comments.
Scouse Wayne It's not lawful in the US (except in california where you're allowed to lane split), and it's not smart to do even if legal where you have a series of lights so that the drivers will be forced to pass you each time you get ahead of them. This type of thing causes a LOT of road rage.
waw well I just got me a 125 scooter because the use of a bicycle where I live is just deadly... yet..... plenty of drivers do not respect scooters... as if they had some sort of mental impairment... plenty will start trying to follow me as close to my scooter as possible... leaving only a gap of roughly 50 cm... to perhaps 1 meter... this is pretty bad considering that over here the streets have a ton of irregularities... and it is just horrible when the one following happens to be a big bus
+Robert Ostman I saw enough scooters and small motorbikes getting tailgated and cut up in New Zealand to know that getting either would be a bad idea. Only wanting a small motorbike, I opted for a Black Suzuki Inazuma GW250. with twin exhausts it looks more like a 500cc than a 250cc. Another "safety" measure in NZ when riding a motorbike is to never wear hi viz! Hi Viz is actually very limited in getting you seen anyway, but what it does confirm is that you are not in a biker gang, so all fear induced respect is lost, you are better off sticking to jeans and a black leather jacket, for ultimate safety in New Zealand, sewing a large patch on the back (as per gang members do) and then tear it off (as per the anti gang laws) leaving the bits of remaining patch as a warning to drivers that you are possibly a gang member. Safety is not about being seen in NZ, it is about how much of a threat drivers see you to their personal safety, forget hi viz, go for the gang look, it is even better than a cop car at getting people to behave on the roads in NZ
waw well... I am almost speech less ... I fill like the problem is the miss use of the roads.... as far as I know they were made to get people to move from...point A to point B... and pretty much that's it... so all the miss-use of the roads are made by ppl ho intend to use them in other ways... and yes... the clear disrespect of many users is there... yet it seems odd that when I am on my big V6 Honda sedan.... no one tends to mess with me... I blame the department of transport of pretty much all the countries... as in my mind...they are the ones ho can pretty much put a end to the peoples recklessness
+Robert Ostman All Countries have authorities to stop the loss of live on public roads being greater that the loss of lives through war, but some do not see lives as important. In NZ for example they have a bigger than average Police Force, however, working as a cop is seen by cops as being able to work at any pace they see fit, and to only act on laws they personally agree with. Year after year the NZ public say they want better policing, and year after year nothing changes. The Police pretend that occasionally being visible on the roads is all there is to policing them, and continue to cruise the streets giving out the odd simple speeding ticket where they feel like it. All it would take to fix the dangers cyclists and scooter riders face is for plain clothed Police to cycle and ride scooters, and to charge the drivers that bully them, job done, bullying drivers would worry that they are about to bully a plain clothed cop, and stop (or massively reduce how often it happens). The Police have the tools needed, they just can't be bothered to work for their pay!
waw that is actually a great strategy!! ....in did police most do it every where... I am going to try to remember this idea so to bring it to the local authorities of the country where I currently live... it should be done...
I have also notice that there is a strong lack of filtration systems for the helmets currently being used... this is... for example as the cars use... where if the car driver wants... can close the windows and turn on the A/C... some cars actually have filters that will clear the air from impurities... they use hepa filters and other systems that will purify the air... this is not seen in helmets... well perhaps the only exception is the one present in industrial helmets... as there are those made for welders and others... that include a purifying systems... to me seems clear that we need such helmets... and I am actually thinking on designing this option... yet I am currently with no real cash to jump into such expensive task... I am thinking that if I was to take this idea to the army... they... may want to provide cash flow and other resources...
To be fair, your a small cyclist riding almost in the middle of the road, blocking traffic, what did you expect, you also have the responsibility to look after your own safety, careless as the driver is, it did not look intentional and looked as much your fault for deliberately riding far too much in the centre of the road, perhaps just to be difficult and blocking the road. .
+goodall1bay Idiot, cyclists are advised (just as I was) by NZ government back courses to ride even further into the centre of the lane than I did where a lane is too narrow to be shared and still allow for the minimum recommended safe clearance of 1.5 meters. How can my following Government safety guidelines mean I share the blame when a driver tries to knock me off? Do you have a Driving Licence?
+NZ Cyclist TVL no, you sir are an idiot' it clearly did not look intentional at all, So you believe it's better for a car to merge into the oncoming traffic to pass because you don't want to bump you wheel on the panted line, and would rather hold everyone up because your comfort is more important.. What possible reason would benefit from riding 1.5 or 2 metres from the edge? .. Yes that's right nothing. You just upset everyone on the road and you know this, yet you still do it, even when there is a traffic jam forming behind. Then go on UA-cam and bitch about all the nasty drivers who you earlier upset.
I think this is the cyclist's fault. If you go back you can see the cyclist pass the stopped cars on the shoulder. If he/she had obeyed most rules and stopped behind the cars at the light nothing would have happened. I know of nothing else that peeves a driver more than passing them while they are stopped on the shoulder and forcing them to pass you a second time. Be smart and stop behind the cars at all stop lights and stop signs. I am a cyclist who has been hit 8 times by cars (all their fault and everyone had an officer's report) and the last thing I do is pass on the shoulder. When traffic stops I take the center of the lane behind all other traffic, stop, and wait to make the light and/or sign to be smart and safe.
+Tom Call Cyclist in New Zealand cyclists are allowed to pass stationary, and slow moving traffic on the left, I did not break any laws, I guess the car that that passed this driver on the right pissed off the driver too, (you can hear the beep when he also cut that driver up) that driver did not break the law either. OK so if I ride like this it won't piss drivers off right and they'll play nicely ua-cam.com/video/F6JTuSXfaWc/v-deo.html There were two lanes in both videos, so passing safely was child's play. If you are going to pick fault, please ensure you understand the laws that apply.
Sir, Im very sorry to say I have seen this many, many, times. The person foolishly driving that car, has political ties to the cops, mabey a brother, cousin, or undercover....most people, given unlawful priveledge, will abuse that priveledge as well.Posting them IS always the first thing to do, letting the cat right out of the bag, like the news reporter you now are. You better have cameras around, because when you find out who it is, and post the details online, the cops will threaten you on the freinds behalf.I HOPE IM WRONG.. Good luck Mate!( watch my cat!)
I hope you are wrong, but if you knew the history of the Police in my area you would be convinced you are right - see Roastbusters West Auckland Police - allegedly covering up drugging and gang rape of under-age girls "allegedly" because one of is a cops son.
Common problem... world wide police favoritism.. AKA.... Selective Enforcement... Encourages thuggery, and then of course we have the subsequent cover-ups, afterwards.Bad cops cause more hell, than that which is obvious..
Dude! Why can't you ride to the left? That is too far right and you're blocking cars. I'm a cyclist too (and a driver at the same time) and I know. It's your fault.
Take a road cycling training course, I did, this position is fine, if anything it is too far left. Alternatively read the book Cycle Craft. Just shows how little you actually know, get an education before you start preaching.
***** Yeah, right. For so many years on the road I haven't had any accidents, thank God, except one - I hit a parked car's mirror. You keep reading your books, I'll use my brain. :) Peace.
It is not a nice place at all, I have moved to the UK and I am loving the good passes I get here. If you try NZ have a back up plan as many touring cyclists quit after a day or two.
Why is he cycling taking up so much of the lane. Not a very intelligent thing to do. The pavement is much wiser choice or nearer to the curb. Cars use up a lane because they are 6ft wide.....but if a car drivers where to straddle two lanes.....well there's gonna be road rage OK. Because mummy needs to re-educate the disrespectful/stupid driver.
Chris E The foot path is for foot traffic, the gutter is for cops, cyclists should ride about a meter from the edge of the road or further out to stop incompetent drivers from passing without giving safe clearance.
Chris E why is he taking up so much of the lane? to stop people overtaking dangerously 'not a very intelligent thing to do' I'd rather cause traffic behind me than have my head end up underneath a lorry, and I don't really see how what we're taught and told to do can be described as non intellient 'the pavement is much wiser' It's illegal to cycle on the pavement, clearly. It's for pedestrians and is too narrow to take a bike and a pushchair at the same time side-by-side you clearly have no clue about what you're talking about and need to retake your driving test, or read up about the highway code
+Chichi persiancat I can only think of one good road to cycle on (excluding the segregated cycle path I used on every ride) and most people say it is dangerous, Tamaki Drive is the safest, I think partly because there are more cyclists there, but mostly because there are a lot more witnesses about. I find the quite roads with no witnesses are very dangerous, as that is where NZ drivers get to treat people how they want to. Little wonder cycle tourists talk about the dangerous drivers in New Zealand, the rural roads are what appeal to tourists, they don't find out until they arrive what a big mistake they have made.
I used to cycle in west Auckland for about six years i have had so many horror stories from being hit with bricks and bottles and one night i was cycling home from work in golf road to custer street around midnight and a car full of teenagers chased me up my driveway armed with baseball bats and knives it it was not for my next door neighbours i would not be typing this that said i have not cycled since got my licence miss cycling though
+Chichi persiancat I used to live on Hutchinson Avenue (153) The roads you talk about are very close the where these two drivers live/lived ua-cam.com/video/OopLMVh-OhA/v-deo.html It was the first time they'd actually been caught trying to knock a cyclist off, so they were allowed to walk free, little wonder the aggressive drivers don't fear being caught
+Juan Pantoja, in narrow lanes, the safest place to be is the middle of the lane, so drivers are tempted to share the lane when they don't have room. But it goes both ways. Just as cars should give bicycles a minimum of 1.5 meters, cyclists shouldn't be moving past cars without also giving them 1.5 meters.
+Timothy Fish What, even these stationary ones? So cyclists at the side of the road who have stopped also get 1.5meters? I think you need to read the Road Code. You also need to understand that a cyclist filtering through slow or stationary traffic is not the same as a car filtering (as shown here) at speed through moving traffic. Cars are not allowed to filter!
haha the clue is in the name side"walk" & "foot"path cycling on the footpath is illegal in most developed countries, including New Zealand which was late in recognizing the stupidity of allowing adult cyclists on the footpath, but at least they did eventually figure it out.
+Laurence Dolman The Police decided not to charge the driver after speaking with him five months after the incident. The initial complaint was "lost" and the copy (including proof of delivery of the first) took another two months to act on.
Lol the police dont even care. They're probably laughing at how sensitive you are. Maybe, just maybe you shouldn't be riding on a road with no bike lane and heavy traffic. I get the whole "share the road" argument, but usually cyclists enjoy being assholes and holding up traffic. Had you have been a decent cyclist and you know, rode on the sidewalk that NOBODY was even walking on, the guy wouldn't have passed you. If you want to gamble with your life just because you want to ride on a road without a bike lane & hold up traffic, be my guest. But if you're ever seriously injured, you have nobody to blame but yourself for refusing to ride in a safer area.
little miss mermaid o yes, and drug dealers, that is pretty funny, a local cop was jailed for dealing drugs from a Marked Police car, guess he wasn't giving the other cops their cut, I can't see any other reason for them to get upset about it.
that was very unsafe passing and that's putting it mildly, however I have to agree with other comments here, I know that the position in the road you ride is what is taught as the best position, you avoid debris, pot holes, drain covers, other junk that just collects to the side of the road, that can cause a slip and accident, it also forces cars to give you more room on the road so that's also safer for the rider, but that's all good in theory, but in practise you're going to have people like this that think the extra seconds they gain by unsafely overtaking you is well worth you possibly losing your life, I pretty much hug the left of the road when I cycle and only come out if I have to avoid junk, it would be great if every driver was safe, gave you the time and space you needed on the road, but just look at the car that overtaken you, that car is well known to be driven by idiots, be safe man, that's all that matters.
I hear what you are saying, I only rarely ride this far out, and have only done so relatively recently , it feels wrong when I do it, but I know from experience it is safer to ride in this more visible position. I have in the past ridden so close to the curb that a gust of wind has frequently almost made me hit the curb, and despite this I got more dangerous passes. I am only interested in avoiding being hit, if it didn't work so well (not that you could tell from New Zealand's shitty drivers) I would not do it. Better still would be to hold an arm out at times as others do, but in NZ that really would be a bad idea
Why didnt u use the foot path at the first chance you got you would have been safe and not held up the traffic you are allowed too.THATS RIGHT BIKE RIDERS ABOVE THE LAW
Idiot! It is illegal here (and in most developed Countries) to ride on the "FOOT"path you are not above the law you fool so stop trying to make up you own laws for others to follow. Are you honestly this stupid?
***** NZ road law says when you ride on the road keep as far left as you safely can.you were a 1 to 2 mts from the left, so your not allowed to ride all over the road like you were,Developed country you can here OZ and the UK and the US.I drive a semi so i have to put up with laytex wearing gay lords like you all the time
What? Do you really not understand that this means that cyclists can claim the lane to make the situation safer? There is no way you couldn't understand this if you (as you claim) can drive, my guess is you are lying, what else could explain your stupid reply! FYI NZ Road Code say "as far left as practicable" and goies on to explain that cyclists can claim the lane (to compensate for idiots like you claim to be)
Push bike riders are glorified pedestrians. They belong on the footpath ONLY and should have to give away the pedestrians. Push bike rides don’t pay any tax etc that gives them a right to be on the road !!!
@@TheVexatiousLitigant you don’t give ways to cars etc, just thought it might be within your mental capacity to give way to pedestrians !!! But obviously not 🤣🤣🤣
The type of drivers that will try to hit you do it regardless regardless of your possition in the road New Zealand Police Need Your Help The position I take is advised by cycling instructors as it makes cyclists more visible and discourages motorists from trying to share a lane that is too narrow to share safely. There was a definite reduction in the number and extremity of close passes I received after adopting best practice, I don't claim to get it right all the time, but the close passes soon remind me of the need to claim the lane more often when I get it wrong.
Nibbles Nobbles so do I, what reason did these have Why New Zealand Cyclists Need Helmet Cameras ? and what reason did the cops have for failing to address their behaviour. I cycle as trained/instructed, we need the cops to do their jobs as trained/instructed so the roads are safe to use.
Ok, I'm not a serious cyclist like I don't ride my bike everywhere everyday. But I do ride a road bike and when I do I don't take up an entire lane, I ride on or below the white line why do you feel the need to take up an entire lane and cause a bunch of traffic?
+MrNatetheepic Cyclists are advised to ride about a meter from the edge of the road to avoid storm-water drains and debris (both can be seen in this video, and to be more visible..If a lane is too narrow to be shared by a passing vehicle, whilst allowing for safe clearance (in NZ the recommended minimum is 1.5 meters) then cyclists are encouraged to ride further into the lane to discourage incompetent drivers from trying to share that lane. The more you ride the more you will see the benefits of riding in a safer position, I used to pride myself on being able to use next to no road, occasionally the odd gust of wind would make me almost fall as I had no room to correct my balance. What was strange was that if I allowed myself only a few centimetres clearance, a lot of drivers would do the same. now I give myself more and drivers also give me more (well there is still the odd idiot). I hope this helps you to both understand why more cyclists are riding in a safer position, and gives you an understanding that will help you ride more safely. You will always get the odd nutter, for example this driver (he had owned this car for the previous 10 years) is well known in the area for dangerous driving, and as with most criminals there were the usual signs of having no respect for the law i.e. the car was uninsured for use on public roads. What is important, is that the Police act appropriately when provided with this evidence, in order to remove the dangerous drivers from the roads.
i guess i can see that, cant you pull off to the side (not stop just stay on the white line) when it is safe to allow more people to pass? im not in any way excusing the driver because he was an idiot and i deal with these kinds of people almost every time i go out (honking, tailgating even when they have plenty of room to pass throwing things at me etc...). but for the most part everyone gives me plenty of room while passing. i think it is a good safe distance to ride a foot or so away from the curb.
MrNatetheepic Yes I can, and do pull over when I feel it is the right thing to do, there are two lanes here and so naturally it is very easy for drivers to pass safely as most did, and this was just a group of cars on an otherwise quiet day (I planned my ride for low traffic)It is hard to pull over in NZ before a driver has already dangerously squeezed passed, but given the chance I will. ua-cam.com/video/3xwF_ZdDlCU/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/wuEv1_NWmoQ/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/oS5uKgEmZYM/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/0zrtSy-m99w/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/uTv8f9xjOr0/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/QlVoPmwCAis/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/leDQb1pY2pc/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/03ZPYcFwluQ/v-deo.html
ok, i thought you were just one of those people that uses a whole lane and never lets anyone by. i ride on a two lane street mostly and people get very heated that im on it in the first place. my apologies for my first comment as it was rather rude. i have subbed to your channel and look forward to more of your videos!
MrNatetheepic There won't be any more on this channel, I left NZ last year, I now live in the UK, I often hear how bad the roads are here, and I have had the odd close pass, but the vast majority give me lots of room, even most of the ones I know are trying to intimidate me are nothing after my rides in NZ I even have the odd laugh at their attempts when I think about how NZ drivers would actually hit me and the cops say it was nothing and not to complain unless I actually got injured (again).I think most (sadly not all) helmet camera cyclists are happy to share the road with respectful drivers, and pull over, it just doesn't make much point posting videos to most, and they never get many views, so can feel like a waste of time. You really should think about road position, riding further out does discourage close passes, though I only need the do it a little now I am in the UK ua-cam.com/channels/nKTpKt6hsZEaaT_BAYa27Q.html I know it feels wrong, but if you can stand the feeling long enough (and it took me a while) you should see benefits, replaced be a smaller number of drivers that take offence to you taking a safer position. Yes, be considerate, but most importantly be safe.
By decent cyclists do you mean the ones the ride in the gutter encouraging drivers to squeeze past where there isn't enough space to share the lane and give safe clearance, or do you mean those that ride on the footpath?
Neither. I'm talking about cyclists who do not antagonize drivers and do not make themselves a nuisance. I ride for transport and my safety is paramount. I find that being courteous and polite to drivers pays dividends. It seems to me that you're actively seeking bad drivers.
Well, to be totally honest, it looks to me like you're taking to much lane at some points, hence you're creating a dangerous situation for yourself AND for cars trying to pass you. You KNOW some drivers get irritated pretty fast, specially on roads like these, so do yourself a little favor and ride just a little bit closer to the curve to avoid a confrontation or accident. Just my opinion, not pointing an angry finger at you. Here in Belgium situations like these don't occur, or at least not very often, simple of the fact that we have cyclist lanes pretty much everywhere. Something NZ should start to work on if you ask me, for the safety of ALL commuting traffic.
The position I take in the road is recognised to be safer than cycling further to the left, and is what a council cycling instructor said I should do. You are right that this happens less in Belgium because of the cycle lanes you have there that prevent your inconsiderate drivers for being able to do this = Good Cyclepath Door Zone separation (Belgium) But you are wrong if you think your drivers are better than the scum I found in New Zealand - (belgium) Very Close Pass 1-ALT-169 1ALT169 I cycled further left whilst in Belgium but got more dangerous passes, why do you think people in Belgium would do that? Dangerous Pass 1FAE182 1-FAE-182 Bruges (Belgium) (Belgium) LIJN Bus Close Pass (Belgium) CISO Transport - Must Pass Cyclist (Belgium) 500CEU MGIF Close Pass
TheOpelkoenjas The point is, regardless of a cyclists position in the road some drivers will make a point of passing a cyclist too close. Cycling further into the lane is recognised as a way of making cyclists more visible (and so safer) and encouraging motorists to change lanes rather than share a lane that can not be shared and allow for safe clearance. Cyclist do not do it to annoy motorists, they do it to be safer. Passing cyclists is not difficult
usually I see myself as a cyclist but I really cannot understand cyclists on racers. you are blocking almost half of the street. You are overtaking the cars illegaly and use half of the road. I don't understand the fuss.
+TheHolden20 So, you are a cyclist? Have you read Cyclecraft? Filtering is not only allowed, but must be demonstrated on some cycling tests. As a cyclist, no doubt, you will recognise that this bike is not a racer, but a touring bike. Yes, there is a lot you don't understand.
+Nutsaur Tried it, not a good idea, especially with New Zealand's aggressive drivers, you are, too often not allowed to pull back onto the road, and are forced to wait for a gap in traffic.
1:15 attempted murder. Front wheel says it all.
It's not rocket science. If you're overtaking someone in lane 1. Use lane 2
TiconderogaX Yes, their incompetence at understanding how to deal with a situation enraged them. I can see how you picked up on it! :-)
TiconderogaX hey, go with whatever makes you feel like you haven't lost, as per :-)
What unbelievably dangerous driving!
My advice : carry a safety wing on your right hand. Drivers are more concerned for a slight scratch on their painting than for a cyclist's safety on the road.
Wow...The police are so helpful.
There’s something wrong with a society that drives a
car to work out in a gym.”
Bill Nye (the Science Guy!).
I think I'd pay the driver a visit later in the evening myself...
No you wouldn't your a keyboard warrior😂😂

No you wouldn't
"Um,just put a brick through his windshield next time? "I'm pretty sure that would stop him from ever doing it again! (:
I drive for a living.....i see a lot of stupidity on our roads..........i am not a cyclist but i strongly believe that everyone has a right to use the road without being harassed by idiots.........car drivers should count the bicycles on the road and consider each and everyone of them as one less car contributing to congestion.........acts of stupidity such as this one always have a sad ending......take care!
I think failing to share the road with other vehicles and bicyclists is a symptom of a deep seeded mental issue.
personally I feel that if someone wants to get or renew a license they should have to take and pass a psychiatric evaluation test first.
Conflating a 15 pound assembly of metal pipes on two wheels with a 2 ton vehicle with a combustible engine is the real symptom of mental disorder.
There are people who don't value the lives of others and they often seem to be the drivers of early model Commodores such as the one in the video.
I've been cut off by everything from a Chevy Suburban to a Ferrari. I once had a driver allow me to proceed only to cut me off 2 blocks later.
***** Carry a weapon then .
attempted murder
cycling is dangerous especially in uk,,,,where people dont care about cyclist.....i respect cyclist...
Just move over a bit. It wasnt right what the guy in the car did but its EXTREMELY aggravating when a biker doesn't leave room on the lanes..
***** wow, just stay a little closer to the left of the lane, that's what I do, especially in high traffic areas.
benzlover55 Get some training from a qualified instructor on road positioning, that's what I did.
I found a slap on a car door as they go by with your hand or foot as in my case my lock and chain always scares the shit out of them and they take off trying to get away thinking they hit you.
what, you mean to say they aren't concerned enough to stop and exchange details/check you are ok, that doesn't sound like a responsible drver
well most of the time if they drive like that they aren't very responcible to start with
wbuttry1 Shocked! I found in New Zealand it was all the time,
He not in middle of the road and why would any think so.
Liam Wabbit do you ride a push bike?
well this cyclist isnt even trying to ride to the left.
Take some cycling lessons or read some books on it. In the mean time remember that regardless of your poor understanding (or attitude) trying to hit another road user is a very serious offence
***** ow you are so mean, I really feel like crying now
In my experience It's pretty much exclusively Commadores and utes that rage at cyclists.
If you are a cyclist in New Zealand, do not trust Julie Anne Genter, an MP for the Green Party, see was in agreement that drivers should not be charged for passing cyclists dangerously (does not sound like a Green Party policy to me, but there you have it!).

thanks for the fast awnser and sorry for my bad english and sorry for you that you did not got revenge.
That is shocking, there seems to be a new type of Green Party these days, it has been taken over by idiots at best, or people deliberately climbing the ranks in order to sabotage the party. yea. sadly. but some of them had really good ideas in the 80s and 90......
Hey motorist you heard about the Move over law right its where all motorist required by state and federal law to move over when emergency vehicle, tow truck, or slow moving vehicle is ahead. You can be cited and ticketed for failing to clear the lane or move over. No question ask the law went into affect last year.
city has no law is not the driver risking the life of cyclist
Think a good invention would be bike to car seeking missiles powered by strava for occasions like this
+Laurence Dolman I'd be more than happy with something that attached a tracking device.
+Laurence Dolman Hey good idea. Except so many would get blasted, traffic would always be held up more.
The cars wheel in slow motion isn't spinning! Woooah fucking rad, duude.
Look carefully, it is turning very slowly backwards, freaky as!
Carry a baton, defend yourself.
To be honest i think we all have to be aware even more in today's ways of using our public roads. There is way too much aggression.
the problem is that once the cyclist overtakes the standing cars he gets to the front and there is no room then for the cars to overtake him and they have to travel at his speed until he turns off the road.
Or they turn off, or there is a safe opportunity to pass, or they are stuck in queuing traffic and the cyclist never sees them again.
never seen a cyclist give way at a 'giveway' line, or stop at a stop sign . Seen plenty riding down the wrong side of the road, on the pavement at high speed, inbetween traffic
Really, got a video? Thought not, don't say shit you can't back up.
wooo got a video....grow up child and let your parent on....
Very over dramatic way of saying "no"
Why did this cyclist not pull up and stop behind all the traffic.
This driver is aggressive around all road users (at the time of the video the vehicle had been owned by the same person for the last 10 years)
any new videos mate.
It is worse than that, New Zealand Police give their backing to this behaviour = Why New Zealand Cyclists Need Helmet Cameras
You were almost in the middle of the road. You could have gone a little more to the left. You've got enough space.
***** well I only seem to be passed like that when I ride in the middle, when I ride on the side people give me way more room...
This happens all the fucking time!dumb drivers just won't use the right lane even there are no cars!
You had about 5 feet on your left side...why not use it. Put yourself in the drivers position.
Think about the 10 cars behind you
+Mx 3 Guessing you can't use the sidewalk?
This is Ash Street great north road. I live on this street. People drive way to fast and aggressive on this road
Appalling lack of police response. Have you considered making an appointment to see your MP?
The guy on the bike was in the road
Yes and the driver attempted to hit him. Only one of those is a crime
If he was gonna try to hit he you would have
That does not make any sense, are you stoned?
***** No you dont get my point, you think he 'tried' to hit you but he probably was tryna scare you, if he had intentions to hit you he wouldve run you over easily
AND DUH
I̶f̶ when that vehicle is involved in a fatal crash, I hope the someone's lawyer finds your videos, and then asks why the police failed to get the car/driver off the road.
Or maybe one good cop will come forward and ask the same! I guess we will have to rely on the lawyer :-(
Have you tried not riding in the middle of the road. I don't never had a problem.
*****
you are realy dumm. You just blocked cars for no purpose. You could go more to sidewalk. there was more than one meter...
TheRandgarus haha sure, a cyclist blocked a two lane road!
no you blocked one of the two lanes
TheRandgarus yes, it was all over the news, "lane blocked by cyclist, expect 3 second delays"
Even more reason to take the lane. The middle
Yes, you would think so, but having tried it in New Zealand it is very likely to offend a motorist and give them the urge to try to knock you off. I am claiming the lane more now I am in the UK with far more civilised results. You need to think that New Zealand only has dumb Police Officers that love power tripping as much as the dick in the orange car (as the Police lost this complaint three times it is very likely he has Police connections), drivers know this and know it means they can drive dangerously around vulnerable road users
you are way too friendly as a cyclist... i would have put a dent in his car for sure, i work on my cycle (postalworker) and wear steeltoed shoes. also my cycle is much stronger and heavier, it´s a 1964 juncker impala, so it is not so easily damaged.
pete smith
that's why i have a "tank" of a bicycle (actually i have 6 of those), steeltoed shoes, a chainlock and very strong legs... i don't hesitate to make use of those items.
Well the police can't edit worth a shit if you ask me, but thank goodness you are ok.
I thought it was satisfyingly good. Nice slow motion of the juicy bits that really show the distances and sneaky swerves of mr flashy over sized engine wizz wheels not doing something useful on the Planet type C***. Sorry! did I say that?
And you call cops scum??...if a car hit you and you called the "scum" bet you wouldnt call them that to there faces!
Move over your tire is a half inch wide
the commodores plates are there
I hope the police caught that ahole ive been thru the same thing riding my bike may a 18 wheeler play with that car the same way and see how they like it. Two cameras two wheels a good lawyer thats how i roll....
hopefully you reported that driver.
*****
I ride my bike to work every day. You're an example of a thoughtless cyclist. You keep forcing them to pass you at every single light instead of waiting behind the cars that have already passed you. Is that extra few feet worth pissing off all the drivers? I don't know what the rules are in New Zealand, but if you want the cars to treat you like an equal than you should act like an equal and not the spoiled prat that you're acting like in your comments.
it's actually called undertaking and it's perfectly and lawfully acceptable for a bicycle or motorbike rider to do, if given space to do so.
Scouse Wayne
It's not lawful in the US (except in california where you're allowed to lane split), and it's not smart to do even if legal where you have a series of lights so that the drivers will be forced to pass you each time you get ahead of them. This type of thing causes a LOT of road rage.
Leggo My Ego So cars passing cyclists when they know the traffic lights will mean they get passed again and again is ok but not the other way round?
waw well I just got me a 125 scooter because the use of a bicycle where I live is just deadly... yet..... plenty of drivers do not respect scooters... as if they had some sort of mental impairment... plenty will start trying to follow me as close to my scooter as possible... leaving only a gap of roughly 50 cm... to perhaps 1 meter... this is pretty bad considering that over here the streets have a ton of irregularities... and it is just horrible when the one following happens to be a big bus
+NZ Cyclist TVL no, you sir are an idiot' it clearly did not look intentional at all,
So you believe it's better for a car to merge into the oncoming traffic to pass because you don't want to bump you wheel on the panted line, and would rather hold everyone up because your comfort is more important..
OK so if I ride like this it won't piss drivers off right and they'll play nicely ua-cam.com/video/F6JTuSXfaWc/v-deo.html
There were two lanes in both videos, so passing safely was child's play.
If you are going to pick fault, please ensure you understand the laws that apply.
Another motorist sharing the road.
Here’s a solution: don’t ride a bike on the fucking road dedicated to 2 ton vehicles that can 40+ mph. You’re welcome.
What? Cars doing 40+mph in a 50 kph limited area?
***** Corruption. That's the problem!
*****
Yeah, right. For so many years on the road I haven't had any accidents, thank God, except one - I hit a parked car's mirror. You keep reading your books, I'll use my brain. :) Peace.
Try cycling in New Zealand and see how clever you think you are
Why New Zealand Cyclists Need Helmet Cameras
*****
I'd love to but will have to stick with Europe for now. I hear it's a great place to live though. :)
It is not a nice place at all, I have moved to the UK and I am loving the good passes I get here. If you try NZ have a back up plan as many touring cyclists quit after a day or two.
drive on the fucking sidewalk to not get hit
+Cgucyrxygc Ypgxjvzj xjm fail, footpaths are known to be more dangerous by anyone with an education.
Chris E why is he taking up so much of the lane?
to stop people overtaking dangerously
'not a very intelligent thing to do'
I'd rather cause traffic behind me than have my head end up underneath a lorry, and I don't really see how what we're taught and told to do can be described as non intellient
'the pavement is much wiser'
It's illegal to cycle on the pavement, clearly. It's for pedestrians and is too narrow to take a bike and a pushchair at the same time side-by-side
you clearly have no clue about what you're talking about and need to retake your driving test, or read up about the highway code
Great north road is an awful road to cycle on
+Chichi persiancat I can only think of one good road to cycle on (excluding the segregated cycle path I used on every ride) and most people say it is dangerous, Tamaki Drive is the safest, I think partly because there are more cyclists there, but mostly because there are a lot more witnesses about.
+Chichi persiancat I used to live on Hutchinson Avenue (153)
The roads you talk about are very close the where these two drivers live/lived ua-cam.com/video/OopLMVh-OhA/v-deo.html
It was the first time they'd actually been caught trying to knock a cyclist off, so they were allowed to walk free, little wonder the aggressive drivers don't fear being caught
You had opportunities to confront this driver. Why didnt you?
Gibbs Tolsdorf where was the opportunity?
Northern Cyclist TVL watching it again I didn't realize you had looped it. I thought he passed you more than twice. (I'd had a few beers) :)
You were like in the middle of the lane wat u think was gonna happen
The driver was not trying to hit the cyclist, he just avoided the other car.
Yeah sure, and the when he accelerated and braked hard stopping about a foot from my back wheel he was just avoiding the curb
Looks like he was trying to go around you kind of,besides don't bikes belong on the sidewalk?
haha the clue is in the name side"walk" & "foot"path cycling on the footpath is illegal in most developed countries, including New Zealand which was late in recognizing the stupidity of allowing adult cyclists on the footpath, but at least they did eventually figure it out.
Oh
thats nuts
Loads of room :-) at least 1cm before he winged you...hope the police sorted him out
+Laurence Dolman The Police decided not to charge the driver after speaking with him five months after the incident.
Orange driver deserves jail time.
Thats one ugly car
exactly mrnatetheepic👇
+Craig Henricksen You did follow that conversation right? :-)
i was hoping that biker got hit but dammit
so "tries to hit cyclist" in the title didn't give it away to you?
Give away the pedestrians? You're retarded are you!
@@TheVexatiousLitigant you don’t give ways to cars etc, just thought it might be within your mental capacity to give way to pedestrians !!! But obviously not 🤣🤣🤣
Sorry m8...but your halfway in the lane....keep in a little more to the curb...I do and cars pass me no trouble at all.
I just want you to be safe...we all knkw theres some ahole drivers out there...lets no give them a reason to use there cars as weapons...thats all.
MrNatetheepic Yes I can, and do pull over when I feel it is the right thing to do, there are two lanes here and so naturally it is very easy for drivers to pass safely as most did, and this was just a group of cars on an otherwise quiet day (I planned my ride for low traffic)It is hard to pull over in NZ before a driver has already dangerously squeezed passed, but given the chance I will.

ok, i thought you were just one of those people that uses a whole lane and never lets anyone by. i ride on a two lane street mostly and people get very heated that im on it in the first place. my apologies for my first comment as it was rather rude. i have subbed to your channel and look forward to more of your videos!
Your aggressive and obnoxious attitude raises the danger for decent cyclists who behave well - motorists treat us all the same.
Jeremy York Try cycling here in New Zealand and you will see that drivers look for cyclists to pass dangerously
You are right that this happens less in Belgium because of the cycle lanes you have there that prevent your inconsiderate drivers for being able to do this = Good Cyclepath Door Zone separation (Belgium)
But you are wrong if you think your drivers are better than the scum I found in New Zealand - (belgium) Very Close Pass 1-ALT-169 1ALT169 I cycled further left whilst in Belgium but got more dangerous passes, why do you think people in Belgium would do that?
Dangerous Pass 1FAE182 1-FAE-182 Bruges (Belgium)
(Belgium) LIJN Bus Close Pass
(Belgium) CISO Transport - Must Pass Cyclist
(Belgium) 500CEU MGIF Close Pass
TheOpelkoenjas The point is, regardless of a cyclists position in the road some drivers will make a point of passing a cyclist too close. Cycling further into the lane is recognised as a way of making cyclists more visible (and so safer) and encouraging motorists to change lanes rather than share a lane that can not be shared and allow for safe clearance. Cyclist do not do it to annoy motorists, they do it to be safer.
Passing cyclists is not difficult
Stupid drivers they keep reproducing.
usually I see myself as a cyclist but I really cannot understand cyclists on racers. you are blocking almost half of the street.
+NZ Cyclist TVL hey, no need to get mad. my opinion is my opinion. racers are doing whatevet they want on streets.
TheHolden20 What, mad? I was just saying....
It might work to bike along side the pedestrian crossing between traffic lights.
+Nutsaur Tried it, not a good idea, especially with New Zealand's aggressive drivers, you are, too often not allowed to pull back onto the road, and are forced to wait for a gap in traffic.
