We got the world exclusive of The Holdovers on 4K UHD here in the UK - but is it worth importing if you live elsewhere?

This was my favorite film of 2023. The three principal actors radiate their profession. So the news of a 4k is a wonderful surprise.
When I'm back in London I will seek it out.
Which will be soon
It's as you say, the look of a film from the 70s I loved watching it on the big screen.
It's one of those few films that you can watch again the next day in the cinema.
Like an old friend coming around to see you.
It will certainly become a classic in the future with or without the Oscar buzz.
Alexander Payne fast becoming a favourite director of mine.

Thank you for making this video! I instantly clicked when I saw it in my subscription feed because The Holdovers has been at the top of my wishlist since I started collecting almost 2 months ago. It’s a truly outstanding film with messages that tug on my heart strings.
This will be my first imported film and from what I’ve heard, 4K movies are region free. At the moment I’m using a PS5 for my movies, but if I want to watch the blu-ray for the additional features, will that only be possible with a region unlocked player?

Thank you so much for the lovely comment and welcome! Yes the 4K will play on your PS5 and in this case, the special features are on the 4K so you won’t need to pop in the Blu-ray. I hope that helps!
Thank you Elliot, this is a wonderful film. I was lucky enough to see it in the cinema and loved it. I live in northern Canada but jumped on you Amazon link and ordered it. I’m just glad I resisted getting it earlier, I was probably holding out for 4K. The production design of this film is spot on.

My favourite movie this year. (Yeah it came out early this year in theatres in Sweden).

Will be importing it here to the US as I need in 4k. It was my second favorite film of last year right behind Beau is Afraid. Such an amazing film and deserves the 4k treatment, so it’s time to import!
Glad to see someone else actually saw (and liked) Beau is Afraid! That's a 4K that sadly only Germany got.
@@greg3118 You're not alone! It's an amazing film that gets better and better upon each viewing, and I truly believe years from now there will be so much written about and a ton of UA-cam content looking at deeper meanings, etc. I truly need to import the German 4k!
Great movie. Shame it didn't get a UK theatrical Christmas release. Will definitely rewatch it again this Christmas.
Brilliant film, I got the 4K this week. I'd also like to upgrade my Blu-ray of Sideways, love that one too. I hope we get a 4K.

Not a movie that really demands a 4k visually tbh but why not I suppose if it's available. I was pleased to see All Of Us Strangers announced for physical yesterday having previously heard it wouldn't be. Only DVD & BluRay it looks like but BluRay will do for what was probably my favourite film of the past year.
Huh? The Holdovers is visually beautiful imo - definitely worthy of viewing in 4K

Doesn't have to be a VFX spectacle to be worthy of a 4k release.

Loved The Holdovers , I have Blu-ray and looks pretty good. It’s interesting that we don’t mind when they add grain artificially but when they remove grain it’s different story. 😉
It is strange that it got no 4K release in the US. I would have thought that the Oscar buzz around it would have certainly got a full range physical media release but it seems that is no longer guaranteed. Another Oscar winner from last year that doesn't seem to have got any physical media release is Zone of Interest.
Yes, I was gutted when it didn't arrive in 4K here in Australia - I thought it would be a no brainer. Often our 4K discs are just the UK pressing in the packaging, so I don't get it - AND it's happening quite often. Disappointed 😞

I would imagine it’s because in the US, the movie is put out on physical media by Universal and their Studio Distribution Services themselves so are not interested in 4K and normally Universal self released in the UK but for smaller titles they are licensing out to dazzler in the UK so I guess it’s up to Dazzler whether they release 4K which they decided to
I love The Holdovers and would definitely want it in my collection. Especially around the holidays. I live in the US do you know if it’s region locked?
The 4K isn’t locked so you should be able to play on any 4K player!

3:45 Did your TV actually kick into DV mode? The 4K digital is only HDR10+, so it’s surprising to hear they went through the trouble of creating DV metadata for the disc. Edit: It does indeed have DV!
And yes, it is 3.0. Basically just meaning the LFE and surround channels are completely silent/blank. Though you could also argue it’s essentially mono spread across 3 channels. There are a few moments where true stereo information peaks through, but for the vast majority of the runtime, the stereo channels are just lower volume duplicates of the center channel.
I’m fairly certain it went into DV but now you have me second guessing lol. I’ll check again later! Cheers

I have mixed feelings about trying to replicate the medium of the time in which a film is set. (“Titanic” takes place in 1912. …. Could that have been silent and black and white?) I’m also not a fan replicating a retro look using digital filters. “The Holdovers” pulled it off, but I can see the difference. “The Love Witch” (shot on 35mm) is the most convincing faux retro film I’ve seen.
The Love Witch is great. I haven’t seen it since release so I should rewatch it!
Hi Elliot, have you checked the BluRay version to be sure it really is not as good as the 4K ?
Universal has been weird with some of their 4K releases here in the U.S. when it comes to mid-budget, adult-skewing movies. Harriet (2019) randomly got one several months back, as did Promising Young Woman (2020), and also Elizabeth (1998) for some reason?
I figured Universal was going to pull what they did with M3GAN, and hold off on the 4K of The Holdovers until 4-6 months after the blu-ray dropped. But it’s been almost that long and no word. I’m guessing they’ll release it for the holiday season?
They probably are hoping people will double dip. I’ll either import or wait.
Don't get me wrong, I would like a U.S. 4K disc (The Holdovers is one of my favorites of last year), but I'm personally so tired of the "why no 4K?" or "no 4K, no buy" discussions. Just enjoy great films however you can.
But I could see a U.S. 4K MOD release closer to the holidays.
