To learn switch, I actually changed the direction of my bindings for a whole season and just suffered being a beginner again. I reapplied the same techniques and drills I learned to ride normally but in the opposite direction. It sucked at first, but now I can ride whatever direction I feel like.
I've been doing the daily switch lap for a while. What really unlocked switch-riding for me was practicing 180s go across the slope, turn slightly up hill, do a 180 when the board has little speed, turn and go across the slope again - repeat I was comfortable with switch after 1 hour doing this. Also shortly after, i landed every 180 regardless of landing "steepness". What a relief it was to get this out of the way - if you read this - and decide to try it out - hope it helps you as much as it did to me!
Another thing, if you are an experienced rider, but only on one stance, take advantage whenever you ever bring up friends that are new to the mountain! When you are in teaching mode, it's a good idea to practice switch while teaching. The pace is slow enough for you to practice and if you're falling, your "learning" friends won't feel left out or like they're slowing you down lol
Great tips for switch or regular riding. I definitely agree that being well versed in riding both ways is a huge boost. Not only to style etc but to safety as well.
I always say I'm going to practice riding switch when I get to the mountain and then do it for like 5 seconds and switch back to normal stance. I don't want to commit to having a slow day lol, but it would really benefit me to learn switch. I used to skateboard and I made a mistake of learning how to do tricks in the grass / on a trampoline in a goofy stance. As I progressed and started rolling around on a board I realized my balance was best in a regular stance. I became forever stuck in a state of having the best balance as a regular rider but most comfortable throwing tricks around as a goofy rider. When I started snowboarding I chose a regular stance because I knew I would pick it up quickly. Now if I start focusing on learning to ride goofy that would unlock so much more potential for me. I'm already super comfortable doing ollies / spins as switch, I just don't do well once I'm in motion. I know I just have to make the commitment to re-learning how to snowboard on my switch side, it just sucks lol.
Nice one Tommie! 👍Your videos are really helpful. We are in our sixties now, still trying to get the switch thing. Like your method of doing ‘micro skills’ and gradually linking it all together. On the often crowded indoor places here in England, you don’t get much space to yourself so having quick little switch moves we can try is really good. Thanks for the ideas Tommie. We’ll get there eventually! 😀Ray & Sue 🏂🇮🇲🏂🇬🇧🇨🇦🇦🇺🇳🇿
I'm a beginner (I have been out 5 times on a board but am an advanced skier) but have been riding switch since my first day on a board because I wasn't sure if I was regular or goofy. In some ways regular feels natural, while in other ways goofy feels more natural. So, as of right now, my board is set up to ride switch, and I enjoy practicing both ways. I figure it won't hurt to be versatile. lol
This year while teaching my kid to snowboard ive decided to force myself to only ride switch the whole time when my kid is with me. So ive had a couple full days of switch riding only. Learning switch is honestly same thing as learning snowboarding for the first time.
tbh what really helped me was doing 180 to switch forcing myself to learn how to control that. after about 2 seasons I am really comfortable doing that along with just figuring out 360s. seems like its all coming together. Dont just limit your self to learning just 1 thing. you maybe come out with more than what you expect. wish I had a longer season in Michigan
Hey your leaning how to hit jumps tips have helped me a lot i thought I would not be able to hit jumps by the end of this snowboarding season so thank you
Dedicated this season to switch and these a great tips I want to try next time out. I also got a new true twin board to help me with centered stance and 12/-12 angles. Having it feel exactly the same as regular has made it much easier for me. Keep up the great content!
For me, it was fairly easy because I ride regular in wakeboard, skate, surf, etc but some reason when I started snowboarding riding goofy felt better. Now I feel okay doing the switch
I'm going to try this tomorrow to hopefully, finally, dial in toeside in switch. I've been trying to dial it in for 10 years, can do heelside no worries! 😂
bro my goal is to be as sick as you i dont care. It's my 3rd season now and I am in full freaking control i cant believe how far i got watching your videos and other content creators. I am not so in control on my regular stance and now I am working on my switch especially switch toe side control/transition and after that i will start linking switch regular transitions to be able to do spins alot more confident
Nice video, I was just missing initial info on which leg is YOUR dominant for me to better visualize. Also, could use info on binding setting, not sure if needed or helpful to adjust..
I was this morning just thinking about how I need to improve this part of my riding, and tonight you come out with a video for it. Are you a mind reader?😂
Hey Tommie, you got any advice for me? I had my biggest ever injury (broken arm) whilst learning switch. I’ve ruled it out ever since, but I know it’s a fundamental skill I should be using.
isn't riding switch just doing everything while facing the other way? other than feeling unfamiliar it's the same and it's about relearning the skills that muscle memory has facing the other diretion, correct?
+15/-15 is a good starting place but tweak it around a little bit to find what's most comfortable. When I found an angle that felt good on my ankles I started getting knee pain and had to bring my bindings closer together.
61 years old into my 3rd season snowboarding and now practicing switch. Great tips, thank u.
Love to see it! Have a great weekend
Heck ya man, never quit never give up.... Shred it!!!!

so what were your before stance angles and what are they now?

What do you mean? Any vids of this?

Switch riding is so key! Game changer in your riding
of all the YT snowboarders, I feel like you are by far the best.
Great tips for switch or regular riding.

Yo shout out to the camera guy, he killed it too!!
I've been practicing riding switch this season and this video definitely helps with interesting drills that I want to try. Thank you
Stoked you like the content and hope it helps
This is my goal this season! I want to get comfortable riding switch. This will help me so much!
You got this!
Super sick vid. I'm an old man (37) getting back onto the board. Can't ride switch to save my life. Looking forward to applying your tips.
Great tips! The bottom line is you have to make yourself do it; no short cuts! I’m learning switch, even though I’m 68 years old. It can be done!

Really nice tutorial, especially the exercises of smearing I.e. I tend to carve in switch badly, so I think your approach is far more flexible.
Number one skill for progression, for sure
Love your style tommie, so nimble and smooth.

great video, without these videos i would not be riding. switch is my next hurdle.

Thank you for the video! I've always thought I should level up and learn to ride switch, but haven't known how to approach it.
I'm going to try this tomorrow to hopefully, finally, dial in toeside in switch. I've been trying to dial it in for 10 years, can do heelside no worries! 😂
Sick advice TB Love ya content 🤟👍
I appreciate you my dood
Absolute Great Lession. Thanks for your Tipps 💪🏻👍🏻
Great video
My next goal! Thanks Tommie!
I've been boarding for 20 some years...and never really tried to ride switch...i can't imagine taking the time to relearn...lol
Catching an edge while practicing switch really deters me from wanting to learn it, BUT I MUST
bro my goal is to be as sick as you i dont care. It's my 3rd season now and I am in full freaking control i cant believe how far i got watching your videos and other content creators. Cool vid! Always hard to practice when only hitting the slopes 2-3 times per season - still gotta find time to improve!
Never gonna improve riding 2-3 days a year that’s just a fact lol
Great intro
" Find the right terrain." Hard to do in the mid-west when your hill is only 250' vert. You're at the bottom before you know it.
Good tips, cheers
hey man! great videos! are you riding duck stance for your angles? what is recommended or ideal angles for switch?
I like these butters man!
Great video. What binding angles do you use?
♥ Blossom 👌
Hey Tommie, you got any advice for me? I had my biggest ever injury (broken arm) whilst learning switch. I’ve ruled it out ever since, but I know it’s a fundamental skill I should be using.
I have not learned ollie while riding switch yet
I'm practicing switch the problem is sometimes I make carving switch and loose my body position 🤣😂
Epic content

Hey how much do you weigh, boot size and what size blossom do you ride if you don't mind me asking?
In order to ride switch, should your bindings angles be +15 -15,or you can set up also other angles, like +21 -9?
Where is this?
Tommie's acting is underated at 0:22. Give the man an Oscar.
lol. I appreciate you. We def trying
RIDE SWITCH. Your 180s will thank you
Does anyone know which ski resort this is?
Copper
Thank you
I want to learn switch
Are you riding duck stance? I struggle with switch because it feels weird with toes pointing up hill, it makes me rotate my shoulders even more.
Yes, i am also curious what angles he is riding on switch. Thank you.
Watch his vid on snowboard stances lmao. If I remember right it’s 15/-15
What’s the best binding set up to practice switch riding ?
15-15 degree
+15/-15 is a good starting place but tweak it around a little bit to find what's most comfortable. When I found an angle that felt good on my ankles I started getting knee pain and had to bring my bindings closer together.
Missed the biggest hurtle. Most people hang up on thinking of themselves as going backwards.
Am i first no way 😂
Mmmmmm birds
Basically just do all the beginner drills as if you don't know how to ride at all ;)
That is a blanket of a slope, where is it .
Copper Mountain
Under 10 mins
what is the best binding angle for switch?
do you guys ship on canada
