I am a child life specialist and it’s so great to see our (fairly new) profession get its recognition. We play an integral part in support patients to cope and normalize their hospital surroundings. Thank you so much for the recognition!!
I’ve honestly never heard about this profession until this video! I did a little research and it sounds so cool and rewarding! Its almost like an child therapist!
I didn't know this was a profession but it seems so logical now that I see it. I'm sure the families are incredibly grateful for your work. Honestly, I feel like adults could use a version of this too, especially those facing sudden long term or frequent hospital visits for the first time.
I never had a child life specialist in less I did as a baby and don’t remember it I had 3 egd’s and 1 colonoscopy as an adult I’m 25 now I was 22 for my first egd , 23 for my colonoscopy and 2 egd when I was 24 one in January and one in April my birthday is August 28th I might need another colonoscopy next year it’s been 3 years
I've had complex illnesses since I was 7 but CLSs weren't really a thing back then, I can imagine how much y'all help those kids like me, I know I would've felt so much better if I had someone to explain things to me as a kid and care about how I feel
You would be AMAZING as a pediatric physician. You are so friendly and positive all the time, which as a former frequent in-hospital pediatric patient and as a current parent, feel is an absolutely essential character of any pediatric physician.
I've found my hyper, joyful personality that used to get me into trouble at school has helped me greatly with my pediatric patients. I am a Family Medicine doctor with lots of Peds patients so definitely I agree, she would be a great Peds doc.
I was diagnosed w dermatomyositis at 16, it was really scary not feeling in control of my body. 9 years later, im in remission and doing so much better. glad to see mona feeling better :)
I’m still not quite in remission(i was 13, but probably have been ill since I was 2-3, looking at photographs), but it’s definitely amazing to see everyone reaching remission and doing well.
I was a patient under this medical team for 7 years! They are absolutely outstanding and they are the reason I am pursing my nursing degree and specializing in pediatrics!
What an incredible little girl. She is so articulate. Such a testament to how all the hard work staff puts in can better this sweet little girls life. Thank you for sharing this video Siobhan. Siobhan, you are seriously such an amazing doctor. Ontario is so so so lucky to have such an intelligent, enthusiastic, empathetic and kind human.
One of the things I love about this channel is I get to learn more about how diagnosis’s are done from a doctors perspective and how everyone works together for a common cause. It also helps that you are upbeat and cheerful even when you may not feel it and I thank you for that.
I was diagnosed with Juvenile Systemic Idiopathic Arthritis when I was 11, and had to be on methotrexate and prednisone for 2 years. When I was brought into the hospital, I also couldn’t walk, and it was a terrifying experience for my family and I. I am now 24 and in remission. It is so heartwarming to see you helping kids just like me, Siobhan ♥️ Thank you for putting your heart and soul into your work
As someone who’s spent time with pediatric rheumatology from the patient side, this team looks great, they explain the conditions and try to make being there less scary. Even now, as a teen, it’s not fun to go there, to see Mona, it’s very cool. The area I live in is very close to a place that is only one of two in the US that can treat my condition, but it’s still scary to be looking at several weeks where you don’t know what is going to happen.
Hope you are doing better. I'm glad you were able to get a diagnosis as a child. It really helps if you can start treatment early on vs an adult. I have Lupus and I had all the signs and symptoms as a child but no one could figure out why I was always so sick as a child. When I turned 20 I started peeing blood. The urologist was the one to see my AnA was positive and recommended I see a rheumatologist. Then the rheumatologist said I had Lupus but wouldn't diagnosis me until I was in my 30s 😒. Thankfully I found a different dr and I finally got help and diagnosed at 26.
Even wearing a mask this entire video. Can I just say, you speak through your eyes so much. Also. Mona was definitely comfortable around you. Playing with your hair speaks volumes. And thank you so much. For showing us another hidden, and under appreciated department. What an amazing insight. Merry Christmas Siobhan!
As someone who grew up with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, it makes my heart soo full to see this kind of content. Thank you so much for this. I remember how scary it was to be at the hospital all the time taking so many medicines, and wishing I was “normal” like the other kids. I’ve started high school, and I’ve been keeping up with your channel for over a year now. It’s also awesome to see that you are a musician too!! (I play oboe and alto saxophone!) Ever since I was young I knew I wanted a career in the medical field, and growing up with Arthritis like this has inspired me to want to go into pediatric rheumatology to help children because I share these scary experiences with them. Being able to follow your journey through residency has inspired me even more. Thank you for making this kind of content!! Have a happy new year. ❤️
A vasculitis warrior here! I love your videos! I appreciate how educational they are. Autoimmune conditions can be so hard to diagnose and often go undiagnosed for a long time. I almost died because the doctors I went to see when I got sick didn't even think to consider anything outside the flu or exhaustion. Two weeks later I was on life support... I appreciate you, Siobhan!
Mona is the sweetest girl ever. The team have done amazing work with her and I'm sure many other kids! Hats off to you guys! You can see how your work has helped her with this condition. I wish Mona all the best with her future ❤️
this is my first time learning about child life specialists! i'm disabled and have been since birth (i'm 24 now), and have a lot of medical trauma that i think could have been mostly avoided if this amazing profession had existed then. i have no words to express how valuable this specialty is, and i'm overjoyed to see that it exists. mona warms my heart, as well
It’s awesome that Mona has made a good recovery. I actually have Juvenile Dermatomyositis myself and it’s really nice to see younger kids make such good progress since it’s a lot more intimidating for them. I was diagnosed at 13, so it was perhaps easier to come to terms with it. I hope everything keeps going well for you Mona!
Siobhan, thank you for sharing Mona story! I started crying when you were talking about Mona having dermatomyositis. My younger brother was diagnosed with dermatomyositis at the age of 8. Sadly, at the age of 11, his body finally shut down completely and he passed away. Dermatomyositis is no joke! Thank you again for sharing Mona's story!
Oh she is just so sweet! Such a brave girl. Breaks my heart that she was so sick but heartwarming that she is so upbeat and positive she is even at such a young age.
Siobhan, you are an absolutely beautiful person and amazing doctor. I hope you always have your passion and kind hearted and compassionate attitude throughout your (no doubt), highly successful career! - I was in hospital every week, sometimes long term; from when I was 4 until after 6 and we didn’t have life specialists back then for kids. We had some pretty mean matrons back then, but there was one nurse who always supported me and showered me with kindness and affection. We also shared the same name which was pretty great to me back then. 😊 It’s so nice to see such amazing people working with children these days. You are all a unique kind of person and thank you, and all nurses for what you do.
I'm so impressed with your ability to pronounce medical terms very clearly...the words just roll off your tongue! Also, I find your bright-eyed happiness to be so contagious!!!
During my internship I did a case study with a young girl with myasthenia gravis and this made me think so much about her. She had a similar story and she’s doing great now!
Love all your videos! I had liver and kidney failure and the hospital staff was just amazing, truly. I never thought “strangers” would care so much about you but they worked so hard and I was just forever grateful.
Dr. Mike was my peds rheumatologist and he rocked. I was the same age Mona was when i was diagnosed with JA. What a little spark plug. She and so many kids like her are why I advocate so loudly for more research

Thank you for doing this one. My 2 year old son has just starting going to a pediatric rheumatologist. He has arthritis. I had juvenile idiopathic arthritis as a child/teenager and it makes me so glad to see Mona responding so well to her treatment. Methotrexate is a pretty strong medication be on and I hope she's able to get off of it eventually.
Mona is such a strong lovely girl! And what an amazing team working with these kids. Thank you so much for sharing this with us, a real light in these dark days
I loved watching this. My sister also has juvenile dermatomyositis and is taking all the same medications. It really was a huge set back for her and her health. So glad to see Mona doing well makes me hopeful
About 6 months ago my oldest took a tumble and ended up in the ER for stitches. The Child Life Specialists were the absolute best resource!! The not only helped my daughter be more comfortable, but they helped me as a parent. The provided guidance on how to best support my daughter, and I can’t thank them enough!! I feel so blessed to be close to a children’s hospital that has these type of resources! (Coincidentally, I think it’s the hospital this is filmed at!!)
I was diagnosed with lupus sle nephritis when I was 9 years old. I had 2 kidney transplants in 2021. I am 34 now. My pediatric rheumatologist saved my life from Scottish rite hospital. I wish I could go back to the pediatric rheumatologist. They are so much better than the adult ones I've had.
As someone who has quite a bit of medical trauma, I appreciate all your videos because they remind me the hospital isn't always scary and there are kind people like you there.
And absolutely love the shadowing of different professions! I had a social worker and I just watched your video where you shadowed her and what an amazing job. They did everything they could for me as far as medication and setting me up with doctors at discharge
Mona is soo flippin cute! Mac is such a great hospital! I wish they had a child life specialist when I was there aha. I was diagnosed with an "S" shape scoliosis and torticollis, I seen three different doctors there to figure out my condition.
My little sister was diagnosed with JDM at age 7. It went undiagnosed for over a year until a dermatologist finally recognized it. He asked my mom if he could get the rest of the practice in the room to look at her because it may be the only opportunity for many of them to see it in person. We were told she may end up in a wheelchair. It was horrifying. After 2 years of long drives to childrens hospital and medications that made her so sick she would often miss school, I am happy to say she is in remission and doing great. Thank you for spreading awareness about this condition! As a current rheumatology patient myself, I wish you the best for your future in adult rheumatology!
Before I became an RN I thought about becoming a child life specialist! I love them! I was diagnosed with spondyloarthritis 4yrs ago, just had to start enbrel and gave my first injection this week! I can’t imagine being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease as a child. I’m thankful I got 22yrs of health beforehand!
My son has battled Juvenile Arthritis since age 5. He’s 17 now and on methotrexate injections and Humira. It’s affected his whole body… from his eyes, to lungs to gi track. It’s great to see how everybody works together for the well being of the children. Our savior was Cincinnati Children’s. 💗
Siobhan, thank you for bringing attention to this and thank you for all you do! Things under the umbrella of rheumatology and internal medicine all fascinates me, as I was just diagnosed with Sjögren's Syndrome, POTS, Undifferentiated Autoimmune Disorder, and chronic pain at 18 (still looking for more answers) after 10+ years of symptoms, and was diagnosed with endometriosis and chronic migraine at 14!
I’m a 13 year old girl with rheumatoid arthritis. I was diagnosed when I was about 2. I used to have to take methotrexate a couple months ago and I’m so surprised how that girl handled the injection! When I would get it I would scream and cry so much from the pain after lol. I’m so glad she’s able handle the medication and I hope she’s still doing good! Love your content btw ❤️
The hospital that this video takes place at is so amazing at treating kids, all of the doctors and staff there are amazing! Even though I'm an adult, I actually see my GI doctor there and have nothing but good things to say
I adore these case-specific videos they’re so informative and entertaining! Also shout out to Mona’s parents for allowing you to share what you did! You radiate positivity and passion
Pediatric healthcare really is unmatched. Adult healthcare just doesn't compare. I love how Mona was playing with your hair when you were talking to her. So sweet.
Sooo cool! As a kid who was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I would LOVE to see some content on that! I want to be a pediatric rheumatologist :) Applying for med this year!
That’s a common misconception. fibromyalgia was recently discovered to be caused be a virus, and can affect anyone of any age or gender. Although I don’t think it’s common in kids.
I love how you guys make your patients so welcomed and comfortable!! When I go to the doctor I feel nervous but its all about the. Doctor you have but all of them are very nice!!💖💖💖💕💕💕
Siobhan, I just want to say thanks so much for all your videos you've took the time to post for us all this year, despite it being such a difficult situation within the hospitals at the moment. Wishing yourself, your husband and your families a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New year. Lucy ☺️🎄

I feel so blessed to be close to a children’s hospital that has these type of resources! (Coincidentally, I think it’s the hospital this is filmed at!!)
God bless you and your patients!
You really were born to be a doctor, and it shines through in your videos.
That little girl is precious.
I don't know what the process was for getting permission to film Mona, but seeing her be treated was so impactful! She's so resilient.
Mona is such a brave girl. Siobhan, I admire everything you do and are a great doctor. Your patients must love you so much
I love how you let Mona play with your hair. That was beautiful.
Any pediatric patient would love you, Siobhan! Enjoy your holidays!
Thanks Randy!! Happy Holidays to you too!
@@ViolinMD Are you still working nights and on public holidays or is that life over?
@@MsStina84 yes sadly I'm working on Christmas... although I'll have a week off after that!
When Siobhan uploads it's a great day! ❤
Thank you for making videos about Rheumatology! It’s hard to understand when just reading about it online versus witnessing your experiences!
You are a happy delight. Anyone that gets you as a doctor will be blessed. God bless little Mona. Isn’t she just beautiful ❤️
You are such a gift to the medical field! You’re so caring and it shows!
She’s so adorable 😭😭😭🥹
Awww Mona is so sweet and you were so sweet letting her play with your hair we need more nurses like you❤️❤️❤️🥺🥺🥺
Pediatric healthcare really is unmatched.
I've never heard of a child with fibromyalgia, just women.
Hi Siobhan! Thank you so much for highlighting child life! I’m currently about to start my internship to become a certified child life specialist.
Good luck! I hope it goes amazingly ❤️
❤❤😂😂🎉🎉😢😢😮😮😅😅😊😊

Mona was such a brave little girl! 🙏💖
Siobhan, I just want to say thanks so much for all your videos you've took the time to post for us all this year, despite it being such a difficult situation within the hospitals at the moment. Wishing yourself, your husband and your families a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New year.
Lucy ☺️🎄
If you’re ever on peds again and have a pt who’s spooked, I have a cat who loves to make new friends via video chat - she even helps my friend’s daughter get through those scary lab appointments. You’re welcome to get in touch if Stitch can be helpful for any of your pts. 💜
You’re a sweetie!
I love your narration which is so real (linguistically and physically) and filled with enthusiasm. Can't wait until your next clip.
Btw, Happy New Year and may all the best be with you and your career advancement!
Hi Dr. Siobhan. I've seen many if your YT videos and I think this one is the best yet!
Thank you for sharing and for taking care of us. 💖
I know I am very late to this, but I just recently found your channel and I am already in love with your content. I find it amazing that you're doing rhuematology! I actually sympathize with this a lot, because my whole family has autoimmune problems (with having one myself as well), but the way you explain things and generally show interest in the field and care for patients is incredible. Keep up the amazing work!!
Love this channel and love watching these videos! Being a current first year premed student, it's so cool and encouraging seeing how you get to impact patients' lives everyday through your hard work! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Siobhan, It's heartbreaking when I see the little girl Mona"s physical condition and her muscle issues. Siobhan, Your successful physiotherapy will her to recover from her problem. Siobhan, to be honest I also have the muscle issue and walking difficulty because of my nervous breakdown. I need to see a good doctor like you somedsy Siobhan
Oh I teared up hearing Mona's story... we ABSOLUTELY need adult life specialists to make this like this less scary!
Thanks for highlighting JDM. My brother was diagnosed many years ago and was much sicker than Mona. I’m glad Mona is doing well!
Mona is going to be a genius! She’s so smart.
I was diagnosed with juvenile dermatomyositis when I was 3 years old I did all the same treatments as Mona I had the disease for over 8 years and I am now 8 years in remission good luck Mona on your journey!!
I’m in school right now studying to be a child life specialist! Loved seeing that showed in the video and how sweet Mona was! Happy holidays!!
I’m interested in this field! Currently I’m studying communicative disorders. What is the major for child life specialist called? Thanks!
Bless it! I know she had to have been miserable. I am so happy that she is doing well. I’ve had JRA since I was a teenager. Been on MTX, ‘roids, and Biologics for a looong time (My disease is old enough to drink now LOL). I pray she continues to do well. Thank you for choosing Rheumatology Siobhan!! 😊❤️👍🏽
Thanks ever so much for doing these videos. You explain things very clearly and have such empathy. I'm totally blind so I'm very appreciative of how good the sound quality is. Please keep doing these excellent productions. They're badly needed in this time of so much gloom. I'll be pointing my followers in your direction. Hope you'll be able to enjoy some time with family and friends.
Child life specialists are near and dear to me. I still think of the one i had as a paediatric patient, all the time!
Will admit this video gave me happy tears!!!! This is peds care captured. Thanks Dr. Siobhan!! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
This video is amazing, Siobhan is amazing, Mona is amazing, the other people featured in the video are amazing. A+ all around!
I'm literally crying 😭😭 bless her sweet heart ! God bless you for taking such good care of her much love
the way shes playing with your hair.. oh my gosh! what a cutie, im so glad shes doing ok. you guys are amazing!
😊 thank you
What a sweet little princess. She is such a strong girl. My daughter took prednisone and methotrexate, along with other chemotherapy drugs, when she battled Leukemia, at age 5. I'm well aware at what those drugs can do to a body, especially a little one. Mona is going to grow up and do amazing things with her life.
