He dishes on the challenges, how Coravin's shaking up the wine world, and what's next for wine packaging. Plus, he breaks down the science behind argon gas and how it keeps your vino fresh without slowing down its aging. And there's more! Greg shares all the cool ways you can use Coravin, from preserving special bottles to exploring new wines without overindulging. Don't miss out on this chat!
    TAKEAWAYS
    Coravin was created to allow wine lovers to taste and enjoy multiple bottles without committing to a full bottle.
    The name Coravin was chosen because it represents getting to the heart of wine and the infinite exploration it offers.
    Changing behavior in the wine industry was challenging, but Coravin gained recognition and acceptance through blind tastings with winemakers and top restaurants.
    Coravin has expanded its product line to include the Pivot, Timeless, and Sparkling systems, offering different options for preserving and enjoying wine.
    Coravin is working on developing a closure that can replace traditional corks and provide long-term preservation.
    Proper cleaning, clearing, and cellaring techniques are essential for maximizing the longevity of wine preserved with Coravin.
    -The risk of a bottle breaking while using Coravin is extremely low, similar to the risk of getting injured by a bottle of wine without Coravin.
    Common mistakes when using Coravin include not cleaning the system, not clearing it with argon gas, and mishandling the bottle during the process. Argon gas used in the Coravin system does not affect the wine in the bottle and prevents air from getting to the wine when poured into a glass.
    Blind tastings have shown no difference between coravined and non-coravined wines, indicating that argon does not slow down the maturation of wine within the bottle.
    Coravin can be used to preserve special bottles, allowing them to be enjoyed over time without the need to finish the entire bottle.
    Coravin enables moderation in drinking by allowing users to have a perfect glass of wine every night without the need to open multiple bottles.
    Coravin also facilitates wine exploration by allowing consumers to try different wines by the glass and learn more about different styles and varieties.

    Interesting idea to fractionalise a bottle of wine! The hurdle isn't wanting to have a glass, the hurdle is what about the rest of the bottle. Love these longer format interviews, thanks Brendo!

    Amazing stuff! Is there an intersection here between silicone valley and the tech industry and the wine industry? They seem like polar opposite industries.

      There rarely seems to be much compatibility between the two, to be honest - quite often technology seems to take us away from the enjoyment of wine in a viceral sense - but there are outliers, like this one - or perhaps Vivino?

    Wow, textbook definition of a bad hair day Brendan…
    (Bad) joke aside, great interview. Plenty of good questions and great insights - than you for that!
    Following your video on wine accessories (the opinions on Coravin from Matthew Horkey and Konstantin Baum helped as well), I’ve actually purchased a Coravin Timeless earlier in May, ahead of my upcoming birthday. June 11th can’t come soon enough.

      Bahaha right?! Pretty sure that hair has a mind of it's own though...absolutely STOKED you picked one up! Do you have any bottles lined up, ready to crack into?

      I do! On the white side - a few German & Austrian GG rieslings I would not open just yet (Dönnhoff, Max Ferd. Riechter, Robert Weil, Domane Wachau), as well as a handful of reds I can't seem to find a proper occasion for (couple of vintages of Clos Martinet, '15 & '16) and a handful of Brunellos.
      Would also love to try (without opening the bottle) The Merle Riesling from Pikes (have a couple from 2017), but it's under screw cap... 🙂

    Now.....how to use Coravin with my screwtop....Maybe have an initial injector through the metal inject an expanding epoxy rubber blob underneath the cap that adheres to the glass and then use the Coravin??

    • @GB-jt6em
      @GB-jt6em 5 місяців тому +1

      But Coravin has screwtops on offer. You replace the regular screw cap with the one that has silicone kinda centre and then use Coravin needle like with regular cork

    • @robv5188
      @robv5188 5 місяців тому

      @@GB-jt6em Fair enough, but then you might as well open a cork bottle and replace it again with a cork. You don't want any oxygen going in, and have the argon replace the air. Or did you mean COVER the original screw cap with their screw cap and then use the Coravin?

    • @wineforthepeople
      @wineforthepeople  5 місяців тому +1

      The argon replaces the oxygen, but you don't need to replace the entire amount of oxygen, as argon is heavier than air, it sits on the wine. So yeah, you can totally open a screwcap, put their top on, then use the Coravin top over and over again - with no extra oxygen getting into the bottle.

    Am I to understand that you are expecting us to believe you coravined a wine 7 years ago and it was still good? Ahh...the few reviews I have seen showed that the Coravin can keep the wine for at the most, about three days, and after that, it is sink time. Having said this, this was a very interesting interview, thank you.

      @@wineforthepeople The Coravin. Here (ua-cam.com/video/Td111OsAY0Y/v-deo.html) is just one of the videos I am talking about. I review wine myself and have different social media channels including a UA-cam channel and have been trying to get a sample of the product to review myself but it seems that the company doesn't feel the need to even respond to my requests. I have to say that I am rather disappointed.

      @@TheDesertWineGuy Ah yes! This is the Coravin PIVOT - not the Coravin TIMELESS - they're very different models, built for very different things. The Pivot is more built for hospitality and service - it's only actually built for a few days (although we got it to go to 10 weeks comfortably). Timless is another thing entirely - we've had bottles under Coravin for years now, no issues.
