How to Read an Xray

  • Knowing how to read x-rays is a fundamental concept all medical students interested in going into orthopedics must learn. Learning to read, interpret and convey what the x-rays shows is a concept you must know how to do prior to your orthopedic rotations. This video goes over the basic conversation you are going to have when reading an x-ray. The basic template when reading an x-ray aloud is this;
    First, ask whether the fracture is open or closed and if the patient is neurovascularly intact, next;
    1. State the views
    2. State the side and anatomic structure is in the film
    3. Skeletal maturity
    4. The pathology (using the RADS mnemonic)
