I feel the same way... my 1996 110 Tdi has 335 miles on the clock and my daily drive, i've driven hundreds of miles off road and never once let down... iv'e owend my landy for 14 yrs and i'll owen it till the end.
I find it really incredibly distressing that your government has convinced you that buying a new car every few years is environmentally friendly. It costs a huge amount of energy to make a car. Defenders are amongst the most environmentally friendly vehicles because they are generally kept on the road for a long time. It's simple maths really. The corruption in the UK is really out of hand it looks like.
It’s bizarre the uk in the thought process on the surface you wouldn’t not expect there to be any corruption. But I’m the ever so longing persuit to make the uk green ev or hybrid cars have been pushed but contrary to belief Ev cars are not green. It takes 90,000 also miles for it to turn green now. Realistically the average consumer is not going to get any more than say 12 to 15,000 miles per year and getting a brand-new car, the likelihood of you keeping it more than 3 to 4 years as depreciation and things are evidently going wrong in the sell and then start the process all over again
Most I have done in a day was 900miles in a TD5 130 , wasn't that bad really, just a very long day , something like 18 hours of driving. My Landys have been more reliable than all my car's.
I have only my second Defender in 30 years, this 1996 300TDI (no electronics) since 2006 and at the first opportunity it received a galvanised chassis. I did a trip from North East England , on the ferry to Rotterdam and then down to Geneva. For some reason the power steering pump drive shaft sheared in France, but it previously had a few years stood while I was working away. Coming back was a good foot of snow had fallen as I climbed from the lake, but I still managed Rotterdam the same day I started my journey back and caught the evening ferry. There were some squaddies, on another repeat trip I saw in Rotterdam, they were in a series MOD Land rover and had driven from Germany. Defenders are environmentally friendly if you keep on top of the chassis rust and keep them lubricated they are an investment. I will pass it on in the family when I stop driving.
@@fuelupclassic Absolutely true. At one time I had 4 dogs, 2 would get get very wet and muddy all day outside, but I could just hose out the back and wipe the seats. Muddy boots is just what they are designed for. I am not keen on the urban versions with fat wheels and a snorkel for the high street. The best is deep snow when others are challenged. Diff lock is great when used as it should be.
Im on my 20th Landrover a 110 12 seater 300 with 165;000 miles love them. I also own a l322 RR. But love my 110. Owned in the last 40 years. S2A. 6 cyl bought in 1984 ( with a gas conversion) loved the engine still have the L R stowed away awaiting rescue. Then I had a 2.1/4 desiel 110 nearly lost my love for the brand dreadfully slow would not go above 45 mph. Sold it then acquired a 110 safari 12 seater S3 ran it for 3 years till the chassis rotted. Took it apart kept the engine and gearbox. They still live in my other landrovers now. Bought a S3 petrol 1983 ran it for 14 years ( had to replace the gearbox lucky had a spare see previous. ) then owned a Discovey 1 200 series 1993 best car I ever owned. Kids Grannie pets etc all fitted in when we went on holidays, Did 70,000 miles in it ran great. Then bought a Disco 2 was a bit of a dog lots went wrong with it . Put me off landrovers for a while owned 4 Mitsubushi shoguns great vehicles never broke down. Then built a S3 with my son using the engine from the safari, still have it and take it for a run every now and then. Will probably sell it , had it now for 14 years son left home not now being used will probably put it up for sale next year. O I nearly forgot my other S3 1974 used it for my daughter’s wedding 5 years ago then sold it at Mathiesons auctions for a great price December 2022.. I might have missed out a few Landrovers during my recollections but I am very much a fan o yes I also had a TD5 Defender 90 7 seater 2002 bought at auction in 2011 for £3,500. Sold it after 2 years for £6,500 thought I was doing well think they are commanding £10,000. To £15,000 now absolutely nuts. Anyway I love my present 110. 300 12 seater I use it more than my RR. ( the wife is not so keen though) Nothing beats the experience of owning a old school defender. Cheers.
we took our Puma 2008 ten years ago from Newcastle to Sitges in spain using the channel Tunnel and i dont think my left shoulder has ever been the same I still own the car But I would never do it again and yes we had air con But I am 66 years old and i think if your daft and young the Defender is great fun do it once see how you get on and enjoy it my puma has the 6 speed box and we averaged 30mpg
Haha, I know exactly what you mean :). I've never had too much issue with the lack of shoulder space, but i'm not sure I own a pair of trousers that hasn't got a rip in them, from the seat adjustment lever, so conveniently placed to catch you every time you get out!
The only thing I found with mine was that once you had a few suitcases and then needed to put the dog (quite a large dog) in the back, there was very little room for anything else or for the dog. I ended up going back to a 110, just for that extra bit of space. Although this little TD5 90 was probably my favourite Defender to drive out of the 10 or so that i've owned.
As an ex: Land Rover owner (80's 88's classic Range Rover etc) I have just done 1945miles in Holland, Belgium, France, and Spain in a 2003 SWB Land Cruiser kdj125 at 32.6mpg (with aircon) and I'm amazed at your staying power.
@@fuelupclassic I took an 80 to Chamonix in the 60's that I had restored but that was a long time ago and I'm 81 next birthday, I still have the drive but lack the staying power
national roads in france are much better than the UK And the services are spottlas and free to park and washing machines .not fruit machines . And i use to put bags off ice in my flaps last about an hour nice. And id have took the bentley
I owned a Toyota Hilux 4X4 which I bought brand new. It was one of the most unreliable vehicles I ever had. It was replaced by a preowned Discovery II TD5. Previous owner was rather tight fisted so the vehicle had some issues for instance original fuel pump had to replaced at about 300 K km etc. But generally the Discovery was not more unreliable than the Toyota. Toyota reliability is an urban myth.
I have saved up for a Defender for s long time and bought one 9 years ago. It will never leave me. Best car I ever owned. Love it!
Enjoy :)

My 35/36 year old Land Rover 90” has never let me down always got me home 300 Tdi , R380 gearbox, transfer box & rear axel off a discovery.

Exactly right!
My wife and I did a similar trip in a 90 (1989) without any problems, we did a total of 7000 miles around Europe towing a caravan as well .
The greatest vehicle that man has ever made.
I have one, i love it: But no 😂 it is not the greatest car. In comparison between 4x4 i (personally) would say the older G-Wagon it is.
Cool Land Rover. The color is unique.
Thank you.
Lovely clean straight land rover.France is a super place to visit
It certainly is! Thank you for watching.
I enjoyed Le Mans in September...great collection
Great video. What a wonderful little defender. Road trips are ten times more fun in a classic 👍
Couldn't agree more!

That’s great going! I find that once you settle in to the journey, you can cover big mileages in relative comfort.

Fantastic to hear you've had some great trips with yours! They're unlike almost any other car and become part of the family don't they.

Great to hear from a fellow Land rover addict :)
check the ECU connector for oil leaks from injectors'harness
Sensible advice for any TD5 owner.
Thank you for watching.
Great video! Can you do a video on what what tools and skills you'd consider essential?
Absolutely!

Just finish 4500 mile road trip to norway with my 110 with no problem
Fantastic! I'm sure that was a great trip.
Great presentation
Glad you liked it
i did sweeden to Austria in 1980 in a lightweight one horrible noisey cold body pain ,55mph
Wow! I bet that was hard work.
@@fuelupclassic worst thing ever but then i did it again in a volvo amazon 122 i think is was brilliant still 65mph but nice red leather
: ) not much room? made many trips by TD5 90 to SW France, three in the front and loaded to the roof with camping gear

I drive my td5 110 to the south of france fully loaded every year its never let me down just take 24h 😂
That's great to hear :)

😂 once we got settled in it wasn’t too bad at all. No doubting a Land Cruiser would be much more comfortable though.

The French roads are very impressive. Bentley would have been a great choice but not so much on the dirt rutted tracks 😂
