I am left-handed and all I can say is that I don't expect others to accommodate me in that, i have learned to adapt. You can only show how YOU stitch as a right handed person. I recently learned to knit by watching right handed people on UA-cam and i simply held up my hand mirror to the laptop and watched and learned in that fashion. Where there's a will there's a way! Im not going to write to that knitter and ask that they make their content "fair" to me. Life isn't fair except when we're all dead in our graves. This expectation in recent years that everyone else is expected to show every single type of everything under the sun just to avoid making someone else feel "left out" is not a good outlook on life. You show us what you do, tell us what you think, use the materials that you like, and your audience can decide what to do from there. Self agency. It's a good ol' American concept!
Thank you for another great video! I liked watching your color selection process. I must say, however, that I was shocked by the comments you received from left handers and Aida stitchers. I watch several other floss tube channels, and I’ve never seen anyone else receive such comments. You’re right handed! I think it’s kind that you will try a short left hand video, but it is significantly beyond any expectations. I am an Aida stitcher! I am back to cross stitching after decades away. I do not feel left out! There are other floss tubers who exclusively stitch on Aida, so there are plenty of Aida options out there. I appreciate watching you stitch on linen. It’s beautiful! Depending on my eyesight, I may never stitch on linen. But I certainly appreciate your artistic ability. Thank you for all you do!
What an interesting and informative video on color. I always learn something from you. I am an aida only stitcher but I still learn so much from your videos that I can apply to my stitching. It's making me more willing to try an evenweave fabric. Funny story...I started stitching in 1993, and after a few small projects I wanted to do a sampler. I always loved the look and history behind samplers. I found an adorable reproduction pattern in which the designer included some notes and mentioned she intentionally left in the mistakes the young stitcher made. I loved how it turned out, especially the colors, and it has been framed and on my wall for the past 20+ years. I was looking through my box of charts the other day and came across the leaflet for the sampler. I wanted to see who designed it. Turns out it was you! The sampler was Mary Ann Backhouse (aged 7 years 1856). I'm thrilled to be able to thank the designer of one of my first and favorite pieces that I stitched...not only for the design but for the background notes about the piece. You were encouraging stitches to try linen back then just as you are today! The chart even includes a picture of you 😊 What a long way stitching has come since the 80s! Thank you again for such a lovely reproduction and for all of your wonderful videos that I look forward to each week!
You are a breath of fresh air, my Floss Tube friend. Coming back to cross stitch after decades away, I found your videos and your SAL at just the right time because you helped guide me back to this wonderful world with demonstrations, suggested best practices, and more. My mother cross stitched for over 40 years, and her favorite holiday was Christmas. She passed away almost a year ago, and I wanted to make something in her memory that combined those two loves. “Hearts Come Home” is at the framer’s, and I want to thank you for all of your help on this project that has meant so much to me.
Thanks for your wonderful episode. I wanted to add one more step I found helpful when choosing threads. As a weaver I line up the threads I am choosing for a project then take a photo of it. Then I view the photo on my phone and choose the filter button. It’s the three overlapping circles in the window marked edit. Move the slider all the way to the left and all the color will be removed from the photo (making it black and white). The color value can now be seen and if two colors read the same then a different thread can be chosen that the eye can distinguish would add more interest to your piece. The ideal choices will allow the eye to differentiate between light, medium and dark values. Thanks. Janice

I recall seeing an episode of a “design/decorating” program on TV where the designer spoke about getting paint etc. to coordinate in a room or series of rooms. She took a pillow from a couch and went to the paint store to get paint color chips that matched colors in the pillow. Each paint chip had different hues/tints of the same color. By using a different hue/tint of the color it coordinated with the overall design. Watching you go through the thread color families made me recall this. I have always been very “color conscious/particular’ especially with my stitching. Through mixing oils for painting I have learned how colors when put together will look different than when seen alone or in the same color group. Thank you again for your wonderful videos.
Even though this an older video I am amazed people would have any complaints. First of all this is free. I only stitch on Aida why? Eyesight and neuropathy of hands. Smallest needle I ever use is 24. Can't feel anything smaller. My problems are mine. I don't expect anyone else to do what I must do in order to stitch. We all must conquer our own challenges. Thanks again for your teaching videos.

Hi Jean! Thank you for all your wonderful and thoughtfully taught floss tubes. It is so wonderful to have someone who has been stitching and designing for years share the knowledge with us. I believe that the reason there is so much question about tent stitch is because more and more people are tackling large full coverage stitches with stitch counts of 600+ stitches in each direction. With that size stitch count, many people are either do 1 full cross over 25-28 count (or smaller) and the other group of stitchers of these type of projects are going with around 4 strands of floss using the tent stitch instead of half crosses as the tent stitch is done differently so as to not distort the fabric. I am planning to try a combination of the continental stitch and half crosses on 18 count for the first time in January and I can let you know if it seems like it speeds it up the process or not if you would be interested. I also believe that a lot of people are calling it the tent stitch but it is really either a combo of the continental and the half crosses or straight continental from what I have been reading. I hope you decide to modernized your Evening Star Quilted Cat to show your viewers what a difference changing out the colors can make to an older pattern. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Your comments are giving me some insight as to the questions about the tent stitch and I can see that more needs to be said. I also teach introduction to needlepoint so I already have a class outline for teaching the three tent stitches. One thing that needlepointers never do is to combine two of the techniques into one piece.

Thank you Jean for another informative video. I returned to cross stitch in August 2019 after many years away from it. I was used to kits and 14 count aida. How everything has changed ,beautiful designs ,fabrics and floss. I bought sample aida and found I like 20 count. Your videos have inspired me to try linen and I never thought I would/ could. My new year start will be a small sampler on 32 count linen, so thank you for the inspiration and encouragement which has helped me step out of my comfort zone from white starchy fabric into softer mellow tones in linen. One thing that I have found to be helpful also is when you’re auditioning the floss you want to use, take the #of strands you’ll be stitching with and put them up against the fabric and next to the other flosses. I have found that the color of 1 or 2 threads can look different than the whole skein. I am a left handed stitcher and never once have I thought that you should try & stitch left handed in your videos. Because of your years of experience and involvement in the needlework community I wonder if you’ve got any tips for lefties that you could share but since you’re right handed I’ve never expected you to actually stitch left handed. All my life my brain has been trained to convert what I see. That’s why I almost always perform the mirror image of a right hander. I think you’re doing a brilliant job of teaching in your floss tubes and I appreciate everything you’re willing to share.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Boy am I getting educated! This old stitching dog is having such a good time trying all you have shared. I have been working on the Victorian cross stitch. I am left handed. I am glad for you to show all of us a technique/stitch and not spend too much one subject. Those of us who are left handed have learned to adapt to a predominantly right handed world. I am glad for you to give us the info and demonstration is order for us to learn other things in the hour we have with you! I would have liked to see another row stitched in the Victorian stitch, so I could watch how you move onto the next row, currently, I turn the piece 180 degrees so I am going to left or right. It is gets easier as I practice it. Since I love over dyed variegated floss, it is a great stitch for my "tool box" , as you like to say. Also, I learned of the pin stitch watching flosstube videos Nicole Parkman and FT "Mischievous Stitches". I love how much neater my work is looking since applying my new stitching skills. I am interested in your alphabeted PDF you may be sharing, I am also interested in a stitch along with you.
So far, I have only used the Victorian for single rows of stitches. I did try it once in a large area filled with a single color and I didn't like the look of it. I did do what you described ... turned the project upside down to stitch the next row left to right.

I have really enjoyed every episode you have posted on this channel. So many tips & examples. As a left handed stitcher, I find that the numbered stitch diagrams help me the most when learning new stitches. A numbered diagram isn't left or right handed. Some designer's charts have wonderful stitch diagrams included & some do not. I hope you will talk more about choosing colors.

My mouth dropped open when I heard you say you were receiving comments from left handed stitchers! I have cross stitched left handed for more than 30 years, and never once have I ever thought that the way I stitched was any different than how a righty would do it! With the exception being that I hold the needle in my left hand, I can’t fathom how it would be different. I will be checking out your short videos to see if there is something new to learn.
I am aware that lefties have had to "adapt" in many ways. I do feel for their frustration and try to imagine what it would be like if all directions were written for lefties and I had to make the same accommodations.
@@JeanFarishNeedleworks He he! In my FlossTube videos, sometimes righties have to adapt to my left-handed way of doing things! Left-handed stitchers certainly do appreciate being considered and accommodated. I hear it from my left-handed students all the time, how poorly they've been treated by some teachers and how much they love having me as a left-handed teacher. So thank you for what you do for lefties - it does make a difference to them! And just so you know, some directions are written for lefties - certainly the ones in my book "The Left-Handed Embroiderer's Companion" are. :-)

Please forgive this late comment, but I am binge watching your videos as I am kitting up 2 new projects and re-organizing my floss with the “new” system, thanks to you! Have you watched Lori Holt’s vlogs at all? She starts a new CC project with each holiday which includes the BD of every family member and every legal holiday. She has many WIP but is very organized about logging them and includes a library card on the back of each project with all the details. I loved the idea of starting the sampler on Ap 8th. I will be on the alert for any future KAL. It is a great educational opportunity and I would love to buy a kit with Cosmo threads to try. You will be happy to know I ordered my first linen. I am so excited to get back into stitching. I must order the cat pattern right now! I love cats and quilting! You are a fantastic teacher and have the most interesting vlog!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! I'm a left handed stitched and I must say it never dawned on me that you were leaving me out! You are a gem for producing videos to help my group out. My sister and I are working on a piece that is a "teaching" band sampler from a class we took in Williamsburg...in 2011! We hope to finish it by January 2021. It has a multitude of stitches. We are certainly out of our comfort zone with all of these different stitches. Would you ever do tutorials demonstrating some different stitches such as the queen stitch, diamond eye stitch and Algerian eye (over 4 and 6)? Thank you again for all of your wisdom!
I'll add them as time allows but here's the thing (IMO) unless it's a stitch best done in the sewing method, there isn't much difference. The eyelet for example, is one I always do as a "poke and pull" stitch.

Sorry, I meant this to be under #16. Hello, Jean I have been watching and enjoying your videos since the beginning. I’ve even recommended them to stitchers that I am mentoring in a SAL. At the beginning of this one you talked about the problem of staying in camera range while doing demos. I’d like to make a suggestion for that. You can tape off the space on your table or base cloth that is in camera range, keeping the tape just out of view. Then if you go over the tape, you’ll know you are out of range. Just an idea, hope it helps.
When objects are static, it's easy to stay in range. It's when I am stitching that it's a challenge ... especially when I am looking at what I am stitching and not at the "view finder." When it's a close-up, the field of view is very small. But I do appreciate your suggestion.

When you try it, I'd be interested to hear from you to learn how you manage with a thread-count fabric, whether it's linen or an evenweave like Jobelan or Lugana ... I ask because I hear so many people say that they prefer Aida because it's easier to see the holes ... I find that the "holes" on linen as easier to "see" than the holes on Aida :)

Good evening Jean. Thank you for your video. I relearn something every time I watch your weekly youtube. I would like to get your thoughts on backstitching and the proper way to do that stitch. I am currently working on a piece that has quite a bit of it. While I think some is needed for the definition of the charts it seems to me it becomes choppy if too much is applied. I look forward to your thoughts. I wish you peaceful stitching.
Backstitching has been on my "talk about this" list from the beginning and it keeps getting nudged out. I think I need to do this! Talking about how to do it is easy. Talking about whether or not it's overdone is harder. Some designers backstitch everything, others not at all. I'm sort of in the middle. It's a style thing.
Having done cross stitch as a child in the 70's and 80's, I've recently picked it back up and find that there's more out there than Aida and DMC. I'm sure some of it existed when I was young, but without the internet it was out of my realm of knowledge. You can get most anything on the internet these days, but for some things like linen colors and feel I'd like to be able to see it in person before purchasing. I believe you are located about an hour or so from me, so I wondered whether there are any physical shops in central NC (other than the big box stores) that carry the linens and overdyed flosses? I've just found your channel and haven't made it through all your videos yet, so my apologies if you've mentioned one in a previous video.

I have no patience for it but I do feel it is very, very important to keep your threads parallel to each other. I have a different system that I have demonstrated but I'm not sure which episode ... let me see if I can figure out which one.
Am learning a lot from your videos. I have a question...is silk floss a good choice for a novice stitcher. I plan on doing Pandemic on 16ct hand dyed aida and want a special floss to do it with. Cost is a factor for me, but I want to make this pattern special. If silk is not a good choice, could you recommend a floss. Thank you and have a nice Thanksgiving.
My personal opinion is that I would not go to the expense of silk for such a large project. Even as an experienced stitcher, I would have a hard time justifying it. There are so many beautiful overdyes and variegated flosses that are gorgeous. Also, there is a Facebook group that is dedicated to just that one design. If you join and scroll through the photos you will find lots of inspiration. There are so many that are stitched with solid floss colors in interesting combinations ... personally, I find that those are the really special ones. Enjoy the project! I am planning to try a combination of the continental stitch and half crosses on 18 count for the first time in January and I can let you know if it seems like it speeds it up the process or not if you would be interested. I also believe that a lot of people are calling it the tent stitch but it is really either a combo of the continental and the half crosses or straight continental from what I have been reading. I hope you decide to modernized your Evening Star Quilted Cat to show your viewers what a difference changing out the colors can make to an older pattern. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Your comments are giving me some insight as to the questions about the tent stitch and I can see that more needs to be said. I also teach introduction to needlepoint so I already have a class outline for teaching the three tent stitches. One thing that needlepointers never do is to combine two of the techniques into one piece.

Thank you Jean for another informative video. I returned to cross stitch in August 2019 after many years away from it. I was used to kits and 14 count aida. How everything has changed ,beautiful designs ,fabrics and floss. I bought sample aida and found I like 20 count. Your videos have inspired me to try linen and I never thought I would/ could. My new year start will be a small sampler on 32 count linen, so thank you for the inspiration and encouragement which has helped me step out of my comfort zone from white starchy fabric into softer mellow tones in linen. Thank you for this video, lots of good information. One thing that I have found to be helpful also is when you’re auditioning the floss you want to use, take the #of strands you’ll be stitching with and put them up against the fabric and next to the other flosses. I have found that the color of 1 or 2 threads can look different than the whole skein.
I am a left handed stitcher and never once have I thought that you should try & stitch left handed in your videos. Because of your years of experience and involvement in the needlework community I wonder if you’ve got any tips for lefties that you could share but since you’re right handed I’ve never expected you to actually stitch left handed. All my life my brain has been trained to convert what I see. That’s why I almost always perform the mirror image of a right hander. I think you’re doing a brilliant job of teaching in your floss tubes and I appreciate everything you’re willing to share.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Boy am I getting educated! This old stitching dog is having such a good time trying all you have shared. I have been working on the Victorian cross stitch. I am left handed. I am glad for you to show all of us a technique/stitch and not spend too much one subject. Those of us who are left handed have learned to adapt to a predominantly right handed world. I am glad for you to give us the info and demonstration is order for us to learn other things in the hour we have with you! I would have liked to see another row stitched in the Victorian stitch, so I could watch how you move onto the next row, currently, I turn the piece 180 degrees so I am going to left or right. It is gets easier as I practice it. Since I love over dyed variegated floss, it is a great stitch for my "tool box" , as you like to say. Also, I learned of the pin stitch watching flosstube videos Nicole Parkman and FT "Mischievous Stitches". I love how much neater my work is looking since applying my new stitching skills. I am interested in your alphabeted PDF you may be sharing, I am also interested in a stitch along with you.
So far, I have only used the Victorian for single rows of stitches. I did try it once in a large area filled with a single color and I didn't like the look of it. I did do what you described ... turned the project upside down to stitch the next row left to right.

I have really enjoyed every episode you have posted on this channel. So many tips & examples. As a left handed stitcher, I find that the numbered stitch diagrams help me the most when learning new stitches. A numbered diagram isn't left or right handed. Some designer's charts have wonderful stitch diagrams included & some do not.
I hope you will talk more about choosing colors.

My mouth dropped open when I heard you say you were receiving comments from left handed stitchers! I have cross stitched left handed for more than 30 years, and never once have I ever thought that the way I stitched was any different than how a righty would do it! With the exception being that I hold the needle in my left hand, I can’t fathom how it would be different. I will be checking out your short videos to see if there is something new to learn.
I am aware that lefties have had to "adapt" in many ways. I do feel for their frustration and try to imagine what it would be like if all directions were written for lefties and I had to make the same accommodations.
@@JeanFarishNeedleworks He he! In my FlossTube videos, sometimes righties have to adapt to my left-handed way of doing things! Left-handed stitchers certainly do appreciate being considered and accommodated. I hear it from my left-handed students all the time, how poorly they've been treated by some teachers and how much they love having me as a left-handed teacher. So thank you for what you do for lefties - it does make a difference to them! And just so you know, some directions are written for lefties - certainly the ones in my book "The Left-Handed Embroiderer's Companion" are. :-)

Please forgive this late comment, but I am binge watching your videos as I am kitting up 2 new projects and re-organizing my floss with the “new” system, thanks to you! Have you watched Lori Holt’s vlogs at all? She starts a new CC project with each holiday which includes the BD of every family member and every legal holiday. She has many WIP but is very organized about logging them and includes a library card on the back of each project with all the details. I loved the idea of starting the sampler on Ap 8th. I will be on the alert for any future KAL. It is a great educational opportunity and I would love to buy a kit with Cosmo threads to try. You will be happy to know I ordered my first linen. I am so excited to get back into stitching. I must order the cat pattern right now! I love cats and quilting! You are a fantastic teacher and have the most interesting vlog!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! I'm a left handed stitched and I must say it never dawned on me that you were leaving me out! You are a gem for producing videos to help my group out. My sister and I are working on a piece that is a "teaching" band sampler from a class we took in Williamsburg...in 2011! We hope to finish it by January 2021. It has a multitude of stitches. We are certainly out of our comfort zone with all of these different stitches. Would you ever do tutorials demonstrating some different stitches such as the queen stitch, diamond eye stitch and Algerian eye (over 4 and 6)? Thank you again for all of your wisdom!
I'll add them as time allows but here's the thing (IMO) unless it's a stitch best done in the sewing method, there isn't much difference. The eyelet for example, is one I always do as a "poke and pull" stitch.

Sorry, I meant this to be under #16. Hello, Jean I have been watching and enjoying your videos since the beginning. I’ve even recommended them to stitchers that I am mentoring in a SAL. At the beginning of this one you talked about the problem of staying in camera range while doing demos. I’d like to make a suggestion for that. You can tape off the space on your table or base cloth that is in camera range, keeping the tape just out of view. Then if you go over the tape, you’ll know you are out of range. Just an idea, hope it helps.
When objects are static, it's easy to stay in range. It's when I am stitching that it's a challenge ... especially when I am looking at what I am stitching and not at the "view finder." When it's a close-up, the field of view is very small. But I do appreciate your suggestion.

When you try it, I'd be interested to hear from you to learn how you manage with a thread-count fabric, whether it's linen or an evenweave like Jobelan or Lugana ... I ask because I hear so many people say that they prefer Aida because it's easier to see the holes ... I find that the "holes" on linen as easier to "see" than the holes on Aida :)

Good evening Jean. Thank you for your video. I relearn something every time I watch your weekly youtube. I would like to get your thoughts on backstitching and the proper way to do that stitch. I am currently working on a piece that has quite a bit of it. While I think some is needed for the definition of the charts it seems to me it becomes choppy if too much is applied. I look forward to your thoughts. I wish you peaceful stitching.
Backstitching has been on my "talk about this" list from the beginning and it keeps getting nudged out. I think I need to do this! Talking about how to do it is easy. Talking about whether or not it's overdone is harder. Some designers backstitch everything, others not at all. I'm sort of in the middle. It's a style thing.
Having done cross stitch as a child in the 70's and 80's, I've recently picked it back up and find that there's more out there than Aida and DMC. I'm sure some of it existed when I was young, but without the internet it was out of my realm of knowledge. You can get most anything on the internet these days, but for some things like linen colors and feel I'd like to be able to see it in person before purchasing. I believe you are located about an hour or so from me, so I wondered whether there are any physical shops in central NC (other than the big box stores) that carry the linens and overdyed flosses? I've just found your channel and haven't made it through all your videos yet, so my apologies if you've mentioned one in a previous video.

Am learning a lot from your videos. I have a question...is silk floss a good choice for a novice stitcher. I plan on doing Pandemic on 16ct hand dyed aida and want a special floss to do it with. Cost is a factor for me, but I want to make this pattern special. If silk is not a good choice, could you recommend a floss. Thank you and have a nice Thanksgiving.
My personal opinion is that I would not go to the expense of silk for such a large project. Even as an experienced stitcher, I would have a hard time justifying it. There are so many beautiful overdyes and variegated flosses that are gorgeous. Also, there is a Facebook group that is dedicated to just that one design. If you join and scroll through the photos you will find lots of inspiration. There are so many that are stitched with solid floss colors in interesting combinations ... personally, I find that those are the really special ones. Enjoy the project!
