Most of the subjects you addressed today are related to me, it was uncanny. I have been new to quilting for several years. My first attempts were laden with mistakes but through watching utube tutorials I have made great strides. The same applies to stitching, cross and embroidery. I am starting out with Aida as it has been years since I cross stitched, back then it was mostly kits that were printed. I learn with every floss tube video I watch and take notes. The “better version of me” does apply. I will make errors but my stitching is mostly for me so you can never have too much knowledge. I will follow your videos faithfully 🥰

Crossword puzzle devotees are quite familiar with “ort” - a morsel of food! And “y’all” is a lovely way to address more than one stitcher! ❤️

Thank you for this lovely episode. I loved your comments on the back-of-the-work “debate” which shouldn’t be a debate at all but a choice or just skill. Take care.

Always look forward to your videos. The tips and tricks are invaluable even to us * old stitchers*. Your segment about Steve reminded me, back in the 19 70's Rosey Greer , former NFL Player ( 6'5 and 284 pounds) revealed one of his passions was doing needlepoint! The hobby was relaxing, and he did Beautiful stitching. No snickering about this man enjoying his hobby. Needlework is for all of us to enjoy. Thank you for that reminder. Happy Stitching!

I once flew from Norway back to Germany and had forgotten to remove my embroidery scissors (really special gift from my mom) from my project. Of course I was pulled aside at security. Sometimes people are just kind and the security officer allowed me to keep them and just reminded me to be more careful next time. About neat backs...I always wonder why anyone is concerned about other people's work. My motto is usually to mind my own business unless asked. ❤️

Thank you for your video. I always learn so much. How about opening by welcome "Stitching Friends" or "Stitchers". I will be paying more attention to how others open their videos. It is something I definitely usually don't pay attention to.

Thank you for sharing both your expertise and your opinions. Your response to the back of stitching is so gracious. My grandma taught me that the back of any stitching or sewing should be neat for practical reasons, so the front/ outside looks good. It’s taken years to get good at it.
As for stitching on planes, I love to do it but as my eyesight diminished and my girth expanded, it has become more difficult!😋

As president of a stitchers guild, I had the same problem. The way i have tried to solve this was to use the word “Stitchers” when talking to the group. Or “as a stitcher...”. It is hard to adjust but it seems to be working. I have 3 gentlemen in our guild. Hope to have more. Thanks for your thoughts.

Thank you so much for this video, especially your views on the back of the cross stitch project. May I say again that I’m very much a beginner at this craft & commenced it about a year ago. I soon lost my enthusiasm as not only trying to get the front of my work consistent, but then looking on the back, felt that it was far too difficult for me to achieve a neat back as well. So I put it all in timeout & continued with my other crafts that I had been doing for years, embroidery being one of them. Now after a long time & still having the great urge to cross stitch again, I pulled it from timeout & said to myself, this really appeals to me & it will take a good while to practice to get the front of my work even & acceptable to me. As this is my project & probably no one else will be looking at it until it is fully finished, I now give myself permission to completely ignore how the back of my work is & go forward enjoying myself & learning with every stitch. Now I simply do it every day & love it! Cheers 💕❤️😊😘😍🥰

Love your videos. You are so gracious, Jean! I just recently traveled and took my stitching for the first time, using many of the tips you suggested. I took a small magnifier/light with me. I had no trouble, but a TSA agent advised me to take the lamp out of my carry on bag the next time to make it easier for them.

Thank you Jean for your video and all your useful hints and tips. My mother always said to look at the back of someone's work is rude (unless asked or competition) but that it should be neat enough not to affect the front. It was a bit different doing embroidery on a tablecloth of course (then she had a different saying) it is so difficult these days to be mindful of language and not offending any section of the population. Like you I am striving to become a better version of me , I think I will use your line in my class, where to say welcome ladies and gentlemen is becoming unacceptable. You are looking so much better so I hope your recovery from dental surgery is complete. Stay safe and well.

I have the ID holders that I used at work and often use them for my tools. They have the retractable attachment loop so you can “swipe” your ID badge. I have some from work and conferences but they are available at Staples. Some have clips intended to clip onto a collar or lapel. I have also seen some that have a ‘quick clip’ intended to attach to a purse, belt etc. Either one can be easily attached to a lanyard. I also use a ‘reading light’ that goes around my neck. It is flexible, is in a horseshoe shape, has 2 lights and has 3 ‘levels’ of light and is rechargeable! (It was originally an ‘As Seen on TV’ item.) As always you are a voice of ‘sanity’ in the needlework world. As for neat back I had a co-worker who kept ‘tabs’ on the back of my work in a friendly manner. When she was pregnant with her oldest she did a baby sampler (not counted cross stitch) and on the back her threads ran from one end to the other because that is where the same color thread was located. LOL! Thanks again for a great video.

I just thought of a couple ways you could refer to us in a gender neutral ways.
Y'all lol southern slang and you do live in NC.
Students because you are a teacher this works especially when working on tutorials. Beside we should never stop learning, so always a student in life.
Lastly we could be referred to as friends. Which is a warm and friendly name for all of us.
Then of course to fuss at us calls us brats, kids, or children. Lol just kidding 😂 😅 Had to throw some humor in there.
Also I know it doesn't show... but I am subscribed just so you know.
I have started at the beginning and watching every video. I am learning some very interesting things I didn't know or had forgotten.

I call my female friends guys all the time. Like you said, if he was in the room, you'd change your verbage or say y'all or something. We choose to be offended sometimes. I'm sure the vast majority of people you work with are women. I worked in a quilt shop on a farm. I guess we assume he's there to talk to the farmer, not buy fabric. Most males would clarify that they are shoppers, even if they were with their wives. We need to give a little grace on both sides. Your response was well put. Perception is what it is. We all make assumptions about people until they do something to change it. Live and learn.

I have heard that the word ort was an actual French word that meant a small bit. I’m sorry I don’t remember who said that.
I enjoyed the discussion about addressing male stitchers. I liked the part about males entering a woman’s world, but did agree with you to take the kinder view, which you naturally would if you could see your audience. This was very interesting. Thank you.

It was hard to do but after some self examination I realized that I was guilty of wanting to make someone else feel what I felt in the past even though I sure didn't want to be treated like that myself. Thanks for understanding.
I'd be interested in the source for "ort" as a French word. From my research, the word is not currently in use in the French language.

Great video! In recent years, I've tried my best to stay away from gendered phrases and pronouns, unless I know for sure that is how that person identifies. There are so many people out there that are transgendered or non-binary and sometimes these phrases can be hurtful. Even in the classroom, I never say "boys and girls" - I say "friends" or "my little nuggets" just because I don't know what they prefer.
