I wonder if it _is_ a point system and the stars are just rounded versions of that. Like the points can be an accurate representation of your island score but the game only tells you the score in terms of stars, like one star for every 100,000 points or smth like that.

I got over 150,000 points just by putting random furniture in random spots. Most of it doesn't even have the same color. None of them even fit together.

I got 600,000+ just by following the HHA guide but now that I watched this video, I'm beginning to wonder what the other players houses look like. I bet you that some of them don't care in decorating the house and only just collected the villagers photos and KK slider albums and put on the wall or in the ground. That's my assumption of their highest HHA score. EDIT: You were right for at least 3 category items to get the bonus but it only applies 1 item per category so points won't count if their on the same category. I'm also surprised you didn't mention the color bonus, then again, it's going a take a while as you need to be a mathematical genius to understand the color bonus.
In New leaf, it was pretty simple, pick a theme and put as many items in each room as you can. Complete sets in each room packed really tight. I got around 2.3mil that way if I remember correctly.

the 170 item limit seems like it would be possible to optimise the score by giving each bonus an average score per item. I think each HHA trophy was worth like 1277, so if there was a set of 4 items worth 400 each, and gives 4000 bonus points, that would be an average of 1400 per item: higher than the HHA trophies. I'm curious how many of these combinations exist and if we could calculate the definitive highest possible score with that.
I thought with the new update we might see an islander come to our home from the HHA in our game and have a sit down conversation about all the things we do wrong, lol. Happy that's not the case.
I was able to achieve S ranking in HHA with only the first three expansions to my house simply because I had a lot of furniture per room each room had a sort of theme I set once I built them so it was easy to arrange what I wanted and still manage to be able to move around.

Back in the day when the first dupe glitch still existed, I found the royal crown in my able sisters, so I duped the 30k bell Nintendo Switch I got from the mail, to make money to afford it. I then proceeded to duplicate the crown too to become rich, and as a meme, filled one of my rooms entirely with royal crowns, the walls too. Apparently they counted towards one or two of the themes and gave me lotsa points. Time to fill a second room with them I guess. If they really contributed to most of my score, I should be able to reach 150k

i got the highest rank ‘S’ after like my 2 upgrade on my last island and all i did was put random stuff in random places. was basically using the house for storage.wasnt even trying and was surprised i got it hahahha.
I managed only 180k with none of the goofy placements. I have kitchen, bedroom, living room, bathroom, guest room/crafting room, and dnd basement. No real reason to say this, other than I was curious how much you would get doing things "properly", so Im a bit sad to not see those numbers. Though it seems that around 250k is about the best you can do, based on this video.
I got 165k right now with this: Main room all of the Cute series+4 patchwork tables, and some other stuff mainly in blue, all rooms have a bird mobile in the west, and an extingusher in the east. Only have 4/10 photos of the villagers (Dom, Sprinkle (x2), Audie, Stu). Still need Fauna, Gabi, Cookie, Skye, Cherry, and Rudy. i I can still get to 170k just from that. left room: Kitchen top room: bed/laundry/bathroom, and a 53k bell gaming desk. right room: gaming room with a Switch and a 50 inch wall TV upper room: Kid's bedroom, most of the Rattan stuff, and some others things i would think would fit. basement: Gym room, probably going to make it a school, cafe or office in the future.

I finally got my gold trophy this week! all it took was placing every wall item I own in my main room, furnished only with nook mile ticket stacks on the ground bc I ran out of storage space 😇🙏✨
i got the highest rank ‘S’ after like my 2 upgrade on my last island and all i did was put random stuff in random places. was basically using the house for storage.wasnt even trying and was surprised i got it hahahha.

I managed only 180k with none of the goofy placements. I have kitchen, bedroom, living room, bathroom, guest room/crafting room, and dnd basement.
No real reason to say this, other than I was curious how much you would get doing things "properly", so Im a bit sad to not see those numbers. Though it seems that around 250k is about the best you can do, based on this video.
I got 165k right now with this:
Main room all of the Cute series+4 patchwork tables, and some other stuff mainly in blue, all rooms have a bird mobile in the west, and an extingusher in the east. Only have 4/10 photos of the villagers (Dom, Sprinkle (x2), Audie, Stu). Still need Fauna, Gabi, Cookie, Skye, Cherry, and Rudy. i I can still get to 170k just from that.
left room: Kitchen
top room: bed/laundry/bathroom, and a 53k bell gaming desk.
right room: gaming room with a Switch and a 50 inch wall TV
upper room: Kid's bedroom, most of the Rattan stuff, and some others things i would think would fit.
basement: Gym room, probably going to make it a school, cafe or office in the future.
I've been struggling to get that last HHA reward. thanks for this. I honestly thought there were caps on all of these like only 3 lucky items and thought feng shui only counted in the living room

I’m up to 225k and so many gold items, legit paintings, 20+ villager photos, trophies, plaques, diy items, astrological furniture diys...... hmmm. There are no tips so what am I doing wrong lol.
DIY cards can't be put in home storage. The HHA is always telling me I can put stuff in storage... but I can't!!
It's so annoying! You can put them outside but then you lose your 5 star rating. It's such an oversight by Nintendo.
