    As usual Sir you have produced a masterpiece.Your analysis of Holmes vs Cooney was spot on.
    Larry Holmes's greatness was absolutely illustrated---his ATG jab,his blazing hand speed,his immense toughness ( recovering from low blows from a monster puncher like Cooney),and mental toughness overcoming the toxic bigotry surrounding this fight.
    As for Cooney,if one can forget the 'white-hope ' garbage attached to Gerry (as you say Cooney himself wanted no part of this rubbish ) he was damned good.Cooney could well be the most brutal body-puncher in heavyweight history.It was a great fight.
    Your video spotlighted four men who so very easily could have attained ATG status if they had been more dedicated.Pinklon Thomas,Michael Dokes,Greg Page and Tim Witherspoon.
    I'm so looking forward to 1983.

      @Troll Goodman thank you sir and YES. Rocky V gets a horrible rep; have you seen the workprint of the film? A noticeable improvement over the theatrical cut. There's a video on here called "Why Rocky V ain't that bad" and it changed my perspective on the film. I'll link it if I find it so watch out for the edited comment.

    Hey, man, the piece of this on ROCKY III got me thinking. Have you ever thought about doing a video on how Apollo Creed fit into the 1970s heavyweight scene? That is, what if we assume that all of the real life heavyweight greats of the 70s were active in the Rocky timeline? Because Creed is like 40-0 with a 100% KO rate inRocky I and is the “undisputed” champ who has cleaned out the division, Creed apparently fought and knocked out EVERYONE before Rocky: Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Norton. So I’m curious how that goes down in your view. In what order did Creed take those guys down? Which one(s) did Creed win titles from and when? Did Creed’s presence supplant iconic fights like the Rumble in the Jungle and the Thrilla in Manila, or did those fights happen, too in this timeline. In real life we had the interesting rock-paper-scissors dynamic of Ali, Frazier and Foreman, but in the Rocky verse I think Creed overwhelmed them all with knockouts making himself the baddest man of the era, bar none.
    You could also try to imagine the same thing for Rocky’s title defenses after Rocky II, except that the montage in the beginning of Rocky III reveals Rocky’s title defenses before Clubber to be against a a series of fictional dudes.

      APOLLO'S RECORD BEFORE FACING BALBOA: 45-0, 45 KO's....

    • @boxingpedia
      @boxingpedia  Рік тому +4

      YES I have actually! It's gonna be one of the WHAT IFs down the line! The video game Rocky Legends dives into Apollo's career pre-Rocky a good deal so that may be of some influence. I'm definitely gonna put Apollo in both the 60s and 70s (game says he debuted somewhere in the 60s). Then Rocky right after in the 80s (his will fit well enough, the 80s was packed with guys playing hot potato over the WBA belt). Only thing with Rocky is he'll prolly have go dethrone Holmes early and banish him. Then Tyson ends up being "Clubber".
      I could talk about this all day! Apollo is like a fusion of Ali and Foreman. Speed AND power is so unfair. How he takes down those 70s greats should make for a helluva video. Gotta include this screenshot, it'll be dedicated to you 🙏🏾

    Good video! I’ll have to look more at the Holmes Cooney fight. I remember seeing it at a friend’s house on satellite (so I thought) but it was an hbo event so I’m not sure now. Cooney seemed to only have one arm and one punch, the left hook. That guy turned out to be a chump. Lots of tune up fights with bums padding their records back then

    Great stuff as always. Glad to see Cooney get some credit for what certainly was an underrated performance against Holmes, had Cooney stuck around and kept his focus on boxing for the following few years he probably could've picked up a title somewhere along the line (Most likely the WBA belt) But unfortunately he sits on the list of best HWs who never held the title alongside fighters like Quarry and Shavers. Although looking back it may have been for the best considering all the weird racial tension surrounding the fight even though Gerry was not to blame for all that. Keep up the good work

    • @boxingpedia
      @boxingpedia  Рік тому +1

      His mind took the real beating it seems. Couldve definitely been WBA champ; I wish the Weaver fight went through. Wouldve been a great test for Gerry regardless of winning or losing. If he won that, The Pride and the Glory could've very well been a unification affair! We'll never know tho, good to see you as always champ!

    At the time of the Holmes v Cooney fight there was a story going around that President Reagan had called Gerry Cooney to wish him, "good luck" but had snubbed the champion Holmes. Does anyone else remember this, or know if it's true?

      True story. That was confirmed in the ABC broadcast of the fight. Reagan had an open line set up in Cooney's dressing room ONLY. The purse split was 50/50 and Cooney was on magazine covers not the 4 year reigning champion. The 🍒 on top was when the champion was announced Before the challenger. All this for Gerry Cooney?!?! Try to convince me race had nothing to do with it

    • @HaroldMccoy-vv4lt
      @HaroldMccoy-vv4lt Місяць тому +1

      Holmes had no phone connection to the president ,but Cooney was supplied with one to Reagan ,thus the story is highly possible Reagan gave Cooney his blessings . Holmes tactically dominated Cooney for large portions of the bout ,but corrupt scoring nurtured a false narrative it was close despite Cooney being knocked down , having points deducted for low blows and being completely subpar tactically inthe bout . The narrator also claims Holmes wasn't the same after the Cooney bout ,a false perception ,he obliterated Randall Tex Cobb and succeeded at making several more title defenses . Larry Holmes even when he's hailed in respect has to endure innacurrate subtle attacks of his career assessments . Heck the great white hope Rocky movies gets more respect then Holmes .
