    I like how metropolis makes stuff look really brutalist - I’d love to get a roll of it and take it into Sydney with all the modern and harsh architecture around the CBD.

    First, thanks for the shout-out! Secondly, LOVE your shots with Metropolis...Instantly recognizable as your style and you, but with a new take on things...I hope you shoot more..with a half-frame camera! And LOVE so many of the community shots as well, can we get a full linked list of them all?
    And as someone who shoots Purple, I think it's key to scan your own stuff...most labs don't know how to scan it and they come out SUPER purple and overdone...cool if you like that look, but if you do your own you'll get more of the "false color" look.

    2:56 ahah so I'm not the only one shooting metropolis at night! I shoot it without flash (tripod mandatory) and it gives results I really like. The desaturated look make it feels that it is really night time. I've also shot Purplechrome at nigh and I'm not a fan, turn out that Skys are really green due to the orange-ish color of city lights.

    I can’t say that I’m a big fan of these films. Shooting CineStill 800T is about as wild as I have gotten. Shooting expired color film is fun as you really don’t know what you’re getting with those. I also change formats when I need a shot of difference. For me that is the medium format 6x6. I have both a Hasselblad and a Yashica Mat-124 G and shooting the square is different and can be very challenging.

    It's interesting in my film photography; I try to aim for consistency with the stocks I shoot; mind you, I also shoot pretty much all my film on B&W. So experimentation comes with shooting a new B&W sock or developing with something I haven't used before. As for Lomography films, I've tried purple, I can see the appeal, but it doesn't fit into my workflow. However, Metropolis did enjoy working with that film; perfect for gritty urban environments. I would have loved to have the stuff when I was still traipsing around abandoned buildings! Excellent video and shots, all who contributed!

    • @patrickjclarke
      @patrickjclarke 2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, I shoot mainly BW, and I've fallen in love with Purple because I can kind of treat it like BW a little, but give me a color pop...Once you know the color palette it will produce I've found it opens up a new kind of take on how I'd shoot things. But it isn't for everyone's style for sure.

    • @LucyLumen
      @LucyLumen  2 роки тому +2

      Hey Alex, yes I see your point and to be honest I'm mostly shooting Ektar or color plus or something as I also want consistent results and to stick to my style. But I just love trying out a roll of something totally wild and differnt like purple or something. Matt Murray said to me that Metropolis is a colour film for black and white shooters and I think he might be right. Thanks for watching and always sharing your thoughts! :)

    Lomo Purple is tempting, but so far prices kept me away from it. I would rather call them "unconventional" instead of "experimental", since they give you reproducible results every time you load and develop them. "Experimental" would assume a more risky approach in the way you or the manufacturer mess with the chemistry within the film and /or during development. Also, I'm not sure that kind of stocks will get me out of my confort zone or trigger something interesting. I don't think it would be like the time I bought a ring modulator for my guitar and ended up combining it with a long delays and a ebow creating weird and trippy soundscape...

    • @LucyLumen
      @LucyLumen  2 роки тому +1

      Hello, sounds like you are a film shooter and musician same as my partner! Yeah I guess unconventional is the proper word for them but I don't get to hung up on being correct otherwise I would never make a video haha. I have seen these "unconventional" films look pretty different though and there is experiment in seeing what light or ISO setting brings out or dulls down the colour/effect?? I dunno, whatever we call them I think they are super fun and even if it's just a roll every now and then for something different I'm all for that. Sounds like you are getting out of your comfort zone with your trippy soundscapes and expired film so good on you, keep at it. Thank you for watching :)

    • @Thorpal
      @Thorpal 2 роки тому

      @@LucyLumen Getting hung up on being correct and not finishing what I've started is the story of my life :) But having fun with film is also a huge part of it. I was just thinking about some casual practices that yield somehow unconventional renderings compare to scientific or artistic experimental forms that have been used or created mostly in the field of experimental cinema during the 20th - hence on/with film. Somehow I'm still wondering why it is a distinctive and legit part of that field whereas there's almost no such thing in photography - conceptual photography of the 60/70's is sometimes quite close but a lot of it is firstly reflexivity driven, secondly visual. One of the few photographers I think had a similar approach to experimental cinema is John Baldessari. But most of people would describe him as a "contempory artist", not even a photographer. Sorry for that off topic food for thought.
