Procyonoidea is a superfamily of caniform carnivorans that is currently native to North America, South America, and Eastern Asia, there are over 28 extant species within 11 genera and 4 families, the four families within the superfamily Procyonoidea are Mephitidae (Skunks and Stink Badgers), Procyonidae (Raccoons, Ringtail, and Cacomistle), Ailuridae (Red Panda), and Nasuidae (Coatis, Olingos, Olinguito, and Kinkajou), it is hinted that Mephitidae is the earliest and most basal within the superfamily, Mephitidae contains 4 genera within two subfamilies, Mydaus (Stink Badgers) is the only extant genus of the subfamily Mydainae, which originated from the old world, the other three genera are classified as skunks (subfamily Mephitinae), the namesake family of the superfamily Procyonoidea being Procyonidae contains only two living genera, Bassariscus (Ringtail and Cacomistle) and Procyon (Raccoons) and is the second most basal, both Bassariscus and Procyon originated from North America and are known to live mostly in temperate weather climate, Ailuridae, which are known as the lesser pandas are the only extant family within the superfamily Procyonoidea that happens to be found exclusively in the old world, the extinct genus Angustictis may actually be an extinct representative of Ailuridae, specifically in the subfamily Simocyoninae as the sister genus to the extinct Alopecocyon, the Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens) is the only living species of lesser panda, it is also a member of the subfamily Ailurinae, that includes the extinct genera such as Pristinailurus and Magerictis, the sister group to the lesser pandas (family Ailuridae) are South America's first collection of carnivorans (family Nasuidae), which contains only four living genera, Potos (Kinkajou lineage), Bassaricyon (Olingos and Olinguito), Nasuella (Mountain Coatis), and Nasua (True Coatis), Nasuidae included many extinct genera being the familiar Cynonasua (sometimes written as Cyonasua), Chapalmalania, and Parahyaenodon and the poorly known Tetraprothomo and Amphinasua, nasuids are also the second mammalian predators to colonize South America after the metatherian sparassodonts, nasuids coexisted with the sparassodonts, but were unable to outcompete them, in fact both sparassodonts and large predatory nasuids like Cynonasua, Chapalmalania, and Parahyaenodon were outcompeted by other mammalian predators, predatory nasuids even competed with the terror birds (family Phorusrhacidae) and the largest armadillo that ever lived being Macroeuphractus outesi, the only surviving nasuids today are the coatis, olingos, olinguito, and kinkajou, members of Procyonoidea were very diverse in the fossil record, but now, only 11 genera and 28 species now remain.
