  • Monday 2 June 2014: Security has been voted as the biggest concern of rail commuters for the second year, according to Australia's largest non-government train survey -- the NRMA Motoring & Services' Seeing Red on Rail campaign.
Over 12,000 responses to the NRMA survey were received this year, up from 11,000 in 2013. Personal security again dominated commuters' concerns, with 38 per cent of commuters saying they didn't feel safe at certain times of the day on the rail network.
The second and third biggest concerns were parking at train stations and lack of staff assistance, with 37 per cent of commuters saying there wasn't enough parking at train stations and 32 per cent saying there were not enough staff to assist.
NRMA President Wendy Machin said NRMA's Seeing Red on Rail campaign was proven to get Sydney commuters results.
"Last year, like this year's survey showed that commuter car parking was a key concern of our Members," said Ms Machin.
"We're pleased to see the Government responded to the concerns raised by the NRMA with Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian most recently announcing 1200 new commuter parking spaces," she said.
Although the NSW Government has made numerous changes across the network in the last 12 months, this year's survey results showed the work is far from over.
"Our research shows that over 80 per cent of commuters still think more improvements need to be made to the rail network and close to 40 per cent didn't notice any improvements over the last year," said Ms Machin.
"People want to feel safe when they are using public transport, yet only 13 per cent of commuters say they noticed any sort of improvement in personal safety or visible police on our trains last year -- despite a raft of changes by the NSW Government.
"The NRMA will share the results of the Seeing Red on Rail survey with the NSW Government, with the aim of helping improve the security of our train network and parking at our stations, as well as a number of other key issues."
The top five most frustrating stations on the Sydney Trains network were:
    1. Town Hall -- 14%
    2. Central -- 11%
    3. Wynyard -- 4%
    4. Redfern -- 4%
    5. Strathfield --2%
Commuters again voted Town Hall Station (14%) as the most frustrating due to overcrowded platforms, dirtiness and graffiti and difficulties in understanding announcements.
Central Station (11%) was voted a close second due to overcrowded platforms, difficulties understanding announcements and dirtiness and graffiti.
Commuters were asked to list problems with stations, these included:
    1. Don't feel safe at certain times of the day - 38%
    2. Lack of parking near stations -- 37%
    3. Not enough staff to assist -- 32%
    4. Lack of cleanliness/graffiti -- 31%
    5. Overcrowded platforms -- 30%
The survey also asked commuters to identify problems with the trains they catch:
    1. Food and drink rubbish on seat/floor -- 50%
    2. Dirty unclean carriages/graffiti -- 48%
    3. Can't understand/hear announcements -- 47%
    4. Poor air-conditioning/ventilation -- 46%
    5. Too crowded/not enough seats -- 43%
"Commuters are again telling government that they want more parking at stations, so they have the flexibility to drive to their local station and then catch the train," said Ms Machin.
Seeing Red on Rail also gave commuters the chance to identify ways that the NSW Government could make their train journeys more enjoyable. The top seven suggestions included:
    1. Wi-Fi on trains/platforms -- 45%
    2. Automatic climate control and air conditioning on trains -- 38%
    3. Mobile application with real time arrival and departure information -- 23%*
    4. Availability of dedicated bike racks or bike carriages on trains -- 15%
    5. Better public amenities/baby change tables in toilets -- 13%
    6. TV screens on carriages for entertainment/travel information -- 12%
    7. Food and beverages available on trains -- 5%
"NRMA's Seeing Red on Rail research gives the NSW Government invaluable data about a range of issues with our rail network that need fixing," said Ms Machin.
"Roads and rail work together to make our transport system more efficient, that's why we also need more parking at stations, to help reduce congestion on our roads and give commuters more flexibility and options in how they get around."
