    TSA allows you to carry up to two Bic lighters so that would be a good alternative to the ferro rod. Additionally, for a cutting tool, small scissors (4” from the pivot point) are allowed. Depending on the time of year and where you expect to be, small packets of bug repellent and sunblock could be useful. I might fold a bandanna around the whole kit with a rubber band. That would protect the kit from some wear and tear and possible punctures. Plus, then you have a bandanna, which is a great piece of kit.
    Anyway… I’m a new sub and really like your thinking. This one clearly got me thinking 😂

    Pretty good man! I'd recommend at least 1 large band-aid. You can cut a large band-aid down to smaller ones if needed. I'm always cutting my fingers lol, so a band-aid wouldn't hurt! I know you could use the tape and a couple other items to make one, but a band-aid barely weighs anything, and your kit has plenty of room. Overall love the video man!

    Contact Lens cases work well for carrying small quantities of hygiene supplies (Toothpaste, gel deodorant, 3 in 1 shampoo/body wash, talcum powder - If you are frugal, about 3 days worth. So 2 small cases are enough.)

    For the gum, try eclipse or chiclet style gum. The army calls it “gum, candy-coated”. It’s the type that has a hard outer cover. It seems to handle high heat better. I find most traditional types of gum will melt in high heat and high humidity. Even in a sealed package like what you have.

    Nice. What about using more of the reservoir bags (or just larger ziplocs) as the organizational dividers - that way you could treat all 4L of water at once if need be, rather than treating just 1L at a time etc

    It would be cool to get a group of people together to all share in buying the bulk of many of these things so that you don’t have to spend $12-$20 just to have a few of each thing which would add up to like 200 bucks if you bought everything. You could have one person buy the water tablets and one person by the wipes etc. and then as a group you could all send each other in the mail whatever you buy. So if you buy the eyedrops you buy like 20 of them and you divide them up between a small group of people. This way every person buys one of the things but then you can get everything for about 20 bucks. It would be cool to set up a Facebook group like that sort of like a preparedness sharing group.

I didn't do my research and thought I would try this out for a nighttime sleep aid. Ordered some and took 2/500mg. Needless to say, I ended up finding out very quickly what "Niacin Flush" was for the next 3 hours lol. Sunburn feeling, burning up, itching, hives.....then spent the other half of the time with severe chills. My fault for not researching what I thought was a harmless vitamin 😩

    This is such a great idea, and would see much more use than the typical pocket emergency kit. I'm really glad I came across this. My mother's sister (in England) just died, and - at 82, with arthritis and macular degeneration - she is going to travel by herself to England for the funeral and to visit family - a 22 hour trip from her door to where her step sister will pick her up. I will use this as a template to make up a little travel comfort kit for her. She can't carry much so will be checking her luggage, not carry on. With all the luggage getting lost lately, hopefully something like this will be of help to her if her bags don't arrive when she does. I am grateful for your suggestions.

I would also probably replace the space blanket with a backpacking blanket. Much more durable and comfortable than a space blanket. A dark colored bandana or some compact eye shades would be helpful to aid in getting sleep along with a pair of ear plugs. Great idea.

    However, I can see the fun in building these kits, lol.

    • @DontForgetYourLunch35

      This is such a fascinating question, and one that I think about often. The majority of the human experience has been spent around a fire for warmth and nutrient extraction. Only very recently have we enjoyed modern conveniences through the harnessing of the electron. All of us are continually on the precipice of being thrust back in time 300 years or more, and with an accelerating 3rd world war, this seems inevitable for a large portion of the civilian population.
      The philosophy is simple: always have the means and tools close by to survive as though you suddenly find yourself in the 17th century, but a 17th century where everyone has semi automatic weapons and have never gone more than 24 hours without a meal.

    Niacin tabs 500mg not good at night ?

    • @DontForgetYourLunch35
      @DontForgetYourLunch35  Рік тому

      They actually work pretty well as a sleep aid, and they can potentiate melatonin if you take that as well. Plus theres a lot of interesting research that indicates niacin before bed burns calories and boost growth hormone production. Sometimes I get the pins and needles sensation common to niacin but I fall asleep soon after.

    • @mikel9567
      @mikel9567 Рік тому

      500mg is a too large of dose for most people. 250mg is the daily dose for an adult unless your doctor wants you higher, I wouldn't go higher without talking to a doctor. Niacin is not a sleep aid, and does nothing physiologically for sleep. What it might do, is lower your stress levels which could make it easier to sleep.

    • @DontForgetYourLunch35
      @DontForgetYourLunch35  Рік тому +2

      @@mikel9567 I appreciate the comment, but please do some research before offering an opinion. Of course everyone should consult their doctor before consuming a new substance, but also realize that many doctors are biased towards reducing their exposure to liability. Many overworked doctors are incentivized to just write a sleep aid prescription rather than do the research necessary to give their stamp of endorsement to a vitamin such as B3 (Niacin). That being said, there a growing mountain of evidence that Niacin (at doses of 1,000mg or greater) is a very effective sleep aid, stress reducer, and boosts growth hormone, which aids in faster recovery. Niacin also potentiates Melatonin, so yes it is an effective sleep aid, which I can personally vouch for.

      I figured the cash is fungible so I didn't calculate into the total price.

    If you can't get along without those supplements for a couple of days, you need to reevaluate your life.

      What a weird and illogical conclusion to draw from someone wanting to plan ahead “just in case”.

      @@brawndothethirstmutilator9848 For a couple of days? Unless you already have a really incomplete diet, most people NEVER need supplements and most of what you take Igor’s right through you along with its placebo effect.

      Oh, and to add, if you haven’t been taking supplements even the folks that sell them say it takes weeks to a couple of months to see the benefits. Look it up. Stay informed. Adding a multivitamin to your emergency kit won’t help. It may help mentally, so I won’t say they are useless.

      Creachter, You can’t grasp the difference between “have to have” and “prefer to have so, plan ahead”? Odd.
      You are misinformed and making statements from ignorance. I’ve had medical lab work conducted that proves beyond a “placebo effect” that supplemental vitamins and minerals work. Not only that, we have mineral depleted soil in the developed world and a large plurality of our population is walking around with nutrient deficiencies. Additionally, I don’t think you understand what Niacin is nor how it works. It absorbs and takes effect within minutes. You can literally feel create what’s called a “niacin flush”. Some people dislike it enough that you can purchase Nicotinamide, which is a “flush free” form of Niacin. I work with athletes as my profession, and work alongside Nutritionists, Dieticians, and Sports Medicine physicians. You really need to inform yourself on the topic with current quality information.
