For an unlimited supply of free ranger bands, go to a bicycle repair shop and see if they have any damaged bicycle inner-tubes they're throwing away. You can cut them to whatever length you want

Amazon sells “Altoids” tins that are 1/3rd scaled up. They are 3”x4”x1.75” You’ll find that opting for these opens up tremendous tool choices: SAK knives, many flippers, Bics, Gerber & Leatherman (Squirt & Dime respectively) The added .5-1 inch in either direction changes the entire scope of what’s possible w/o making the kit any “larger” by any practical definition

Nice kit! I like how you reveal some of your thinking behind some of your choices like using the tinder quick to catch a spark and light a candle to give you more than one fire from each tinder. 👍👍

I use those hinge tins for individual kits: water kit, archery kit, fishing kit etc. My more "all topics" survival tin is slightly larger but still light enough and compact enough to carry everyday. If you want to create more space in your tin, base it on your EDC. If you carry a knife (or knife/multitool combo), a lighter, and a flashlight as EDC then you can leave those items out; these three are better than any tiny gear in the tin. I would still put some fire starting device in the tin as they can be small, but EDC flashlight and knife are far better in your pocket. Let's face it, EDC carried in your pants pocket in more likely to be carried than any tin carried in cargo pants pocket (Opps! You are wearing jeans or dress pants today!) or a shoulder bag/backpack (I'll just leave that in the car as "it's just a short trip to the store".). Make a tin, carry a tin, but don't put all your survival eggs in one basket.

+1 for larger more important items
especially if it's stuff you already use every day, using a micro version becomes a huge pain in the ass

Nice kit my dude. Clearly well thought out. Good collection of items and no junk filler. One tip tho, after you light the candle once you can actually use the ferro rod and striker to relight it. That being said I do like your idea of stretching the tinder tab that way.

Great Kit. I love the wazoo survival gear I bought the essential kit off of Amazon love the little aluminum whistle it comes with and the stuff in the straws is great for these types of kits I personally use a OtterBox micro box because I camp on a island on lake and hunt in swamp areas.

Suggestion, hike 8-10 miles into the woods, with only this great kit, maybe during a wet, slushy 6-8 inches of snow. Stay for a while, to give yourself an honest experience. I did it with only a small pocket knife and a ferro rod. Check, practice your skills. Might be in for a surprise. Kentucky

I finally purchased a 12 INCH x 10MM LAMINATOR MACHINE $300, TRANSFER CARRIERS and various pouches.
I also have an IMPULSE SEALER and FOOD SAVER vacuum sealer. These are good tools with many uses for making kits.

Those 5col tabs are great. I can usually cut them into 3-4 pieces. If you ever remake this kit, consider a Victorinox walker and replace the toothpick with a tortoise gear firefly.

The one thing I might add is a couples band aides. And a tiny tube of super glue to fix cuts. And a chap stick if it will fit. ( The chap stick can be used as fuel as well. )

@@jonathanbrock2478 Because of the limited space of a survival kit, multifunction items are ideal. I would rather include gorilla tape and super glue as they have many various uses, over items specific for wound care only. In an ideal environment of course bandages would be preferred. If you’re using a survival kit then you’re already not operating in an ideal environment.

The tape is constructed from petroleum based products so you can either light it with a flame and it will burn long and hot, or tear off strips to bunch up and strike a ferro rod onto.

Two things worth having outside of your tin is: 1. A SOL Heetsheet emergency blanket (too large inside the tin but but 100% waterproof compared to any forest shelter you can build. 2. A water bag like the Whirl-Pak bag because while it may fit into a tin, the more full your tin is, the more risk you will damage the bag both from objects contacting it as well as the folds being too sharp and weakening the bag. These two items should be kept together, but you can store your tin in one pocket and your blanket/water bag in another pocket if you like in order to spread out the weight.
