I never appreciated children’s choirs so much until I had my own kids and realized how fleeting childhood truly is. It is such a small window of time for boys where they can have the maturity to work together, understand music, and sing in tune before their voices change. I can only imagine how scouting for talent must be such a complex process, understanding that-even if kids may grow to become good adult singers-they cannot remain under your tutelage and patronage for long.

The great Viennese Composer Franz Schubert sang in the Vienna Boy's choir. He was selected at the age of 11 by Antonio Salieri.
So was Haydn...He was expelled after cutting a fellow chorister’s pigtails and because the empress said his voice sounded like a croaky frog 🐸
@@tchaffman It's a little late, but its one of the most often circulated misnomers that Haydn was a member of this choir. He was a member of the St. Stephen's Cathedral Choir, as were his two younger brothers, including Michael Haydn. What confuses people I think is that the same guy was the director of both the Cathedral Choir and the Imperial Chapel Choir, which was the predecessor of the Vienna Boys Choir. When there was a big shindig at the palace that required a choir to sing, he would often bring both choirs to sing there together.

@@ebruphiyor9477 Libera also is a well known boychoir. Sorry, but I don ´t like the used "equipment" - mikes in the ears for example and the level control of the sound. Other choirs don´t need that ! Add to this: The sound sometimes is overmodulated and then generating howling noises. That happened when the choir was performing some years ago nearby KoblenzDeutschland. This singer Philipp (as a learned form Humanbeing97) knows how to sing notes as in a rithme of 1/16 or even 1/32. That is mandolin speed sung unadulteratedle. What a voice it was! What a joy!

Singing it this fast does remove part of the difficulty, but it also removes an essential part of the heavenliness of this divine music, unnecessarily since the boys were surely able to sing it at its original and so beautiful tempo; they would even have sung it better IMO because the true tempo helps everyone, no matter child or oldster, to understand and feel the essence.

Merlin1940 WRONG. THE TEMPO IS CORRECT.
Correct or not, it sounds better slower. Google "Vienna Boys Choir in Tokyo Japan in 1983 Part 2" with Rene Cerncic.
The faster tempo masks the fact that technical training (especially breathing) is not an important part of this choir's training. Not the boys' fault!

This is always best sung in a church setting, not a concert hall, such as during communion. The Wiener Sangerknaben sing these pieces best in a church setting. Other secular songs in a concert hall are fine.
