hey Emily! just a request: can you add some benches to sit on? you can theme them to look like rocks or animals! i am disabled and have to frequently sit down, and I'm sure others disabled people, pregnant and elderly people will also appreciate them.
They did talk about the picnic tables outside, but I think some inside would be a good idea too, if its gonna be that cold, no one will want to sit outside to rest ;)

This. My counters are as empty as possible with ONE displayed product at a time and as little signage as possible. Plus cricket bins STINK and with how deep those are, cleaning won't be easy if they have the additional height of a counter.

The lack of dust management during the bulding is going to mean your HVAC system is going to be in shambles. It will also be an issue for air quality for you and the animals. I strongly suggest a duct cleaner come by to prevent that dust from reducing your system's longevity before running it normally.
I think the majority of the dust is coming from the cardboard boxes, I have worked in a warehouse before and let me tell you there's a lot of dust and there is nothing you can do about it. Once they dispose of the vast majority of the cardboard boxes the dust will be much less of a problem most likely
@@the_undead It seems like a lot of the dust came from the sand painting, so it won't be an on going problem, but I bet he's right, that it would mess up a HVAC system. Getting your HVAC system cleaned after most renovations is probably a good idea.
@@the_undead Actually you can use like a big vacuum hoses in the area to suck up particles as you're opening and moving things around and it will reduce the dust. Also, turn off system during the active working and change filters often during this.
I don’t know why but I really live for these updates. I think they make me feel... less lonely? It’s fun to watch the store come together, but also you guys just seem so friendly and kind that it makes the viewers feel like they are really a part of it too.
At this point I want the build to continue forever, no reptiles needed, the comic relief is getting to good. And now the Gnome is there... just keep building. 😂😂
Haven’t seen in any comments, but I’d recommend looking into zoo quality glass, like for the lions tigers and bears (oh my) for rexys pool. Maybe if you talked to some custom aquarium dudes they might just be stoaked to do it!
@@matthewmusco2581 yeah but this specific kind of glass is double paned for dangerously strong animals, so one pane would break and the second would still be intact. The rest of their collection would not be using this expensive material for no reason lol. But they figured it out! Rexy’s pool is beautiful!
That’s how my old pet fish was, although I never forgot to feed it but it stayed alive for like 6 years.... SUUUPER old fish and had some problems but just NEVER died. Died a few months ago. He was our little zombie fish. Rip

I suggest putting the cricket bins by the wall instead of on the counters due to the visually appealing aspect. If you were to put them on the counter, your cashier desk would have a very “closed vibe”. Also, since the doors to the counter are at the end, if one were to walk into your zoo, they would see a door (open concept), next to a big block (closed concept), and the cash registers (open again). If you had to put them on the counters, I suggest putting them to the side. So it would be closed, open, open or the other way around. I hope this helps and wasn’t too confusing!💙

Not sure if youre getting top opening freezers- but if theyre little front opening ones, cricket bins on top of the freezer? The space is going to be nice to have on top of the counter, as somebody who's worked in retail with a long counter and 2 registers exactly like that- the whole counterspace was very convenient. @@SnakeDiscovery Suggestion: to find all those little nooks and crannies and ways to shore things up, ask some friends that have toddlers to come in and turn them loose before you start stocking and bringing animals in. At the very least, ask the parents or someone that works in a daycare to come in. Guaranteed, they will find things that need to be closed, latched, adjusted, screwed down, blocked off, and in all other ways made safer and less likely for little ones to hurt themselves, the animals, or the building. Nothing makes one better at spotting all those little things than having to outsmart an independent and inquisitive toddler (or three) on a daily basis. 🤣🤣 Edit: Just saw the stools you got. If you are planning on making them mobile, steal the internals from one of these: images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/710qqs0SdtL._AC_SL1500_.jpg I'm sure you've seen/used them before. They're a common feature in libraries if you need one to examine in person. That way, you don't have the bottoms of the stools scraping on your nice flooring, and they'll stay put when they're being stood on. :)
Be careful with kids and those stools. I can imagine kids accidentally falling off or the kids pushing each other to stand up on it. Maybe put a railing under each enclosure so they can hold on and balance themselves more? Coming from an accident-prone person
When I saw Ed's green t-shirt with the hilarious "chicken-pot (leaf)-pi" image, I thought, "I gotta find that shirt and get one!" And what's with the gnome? I think I missed an episode... LOL
Plus, Ed and Emily are really tall, so it might be easy for them to get into bins that height, but if they employ a shorter person it would be very cumbersome for them.

The cricket bins look really nice against the wall.. it pleases the aesthetic side to me. Plus having them on the counter could risk escape crickets getting away- though from what I know you're going to get escape crickets as soon as those crickets go into the bins. Also didn't know that fact about banded crickets, that's really a useful tip!

Having the bins on the counters seems like it would make it difficult for the employees to efficiently get crickets. Have you considered have the rodent freezer actually out on the floor? That way people can look at and pick out their own frozen rodents and you can put the cricket bins in that nice corner.
At my local reptile store thats what they have. They just have the frozen rodents in bags/containers marked with what size it is with words and color coded. Then you just take it to the register. It works great! They could even put the freezer close(ish) to the register if they were worried about theft
highly recommend the banded crickets, we carry them at my cousin's store and our customers love them. I adore seeing the progress, you guys are amazing.

Genuine question: In theory, if you left one of the biodegradable cups in the bioactive enclosure after feeding, will it just kinda get eaten by the isopods?
@@conlon4332 the feeding cups seem to be specifically for the pangea food, which is a goopy liquid food. I imagine it would be time consuming to wash all the food off. I think its just a sustainable and easy option.
I think many compostable items need special conditions to break down, and if they're used weekly they would build up faster than they can decompose. But I don't know if isopods would eat them! Great question.
@@conlon4332 I think reusable containers would definitely be better, but that some people use disposable plastic cups to cut down on dishes. If you're going to be using disposable containers either way, biodegradable ones are probably better than plastic, but I'm sure Emily would recommend reusable as the best. I think you can buy some pet enclosures with built in food & water dishes that require a liner (I can't remember what video she mentioned those in, I just know she said she preferred their reusable dishes so they didn't ask for that option), and a biodegradable liner is better than disposing of a lot of plastic.

I love the biodegradable feeding cups! I always tried to wash out the plastic ones with super hot water and use those for a couple of days at a time instead of single use.

If you’re going to have movable step stools, prepare for them to be damaged and/or stolen. Customers can be mean and inconsiderate 😕 Also consider what you can set up for those in wheelchairs etc.
Surely being moveable will make the easier to move out of the way for wheelchairs - also with enclosures at the bottom they are easy to access - they have disabled toilets etc and I’m sure they can come up with a solution to see the higher enclosures but somethings like rex’s tunnel are going to be tricky for wheel chair users - I’d imagine they’d bend over backwards for you if you phone ahead and let them know about your requirements
They would also need more, i can already see some parents keeping those step stools for their own kid to watch everything before putting it back, so in the meantime almost no one else can use it.
I was thinking they probably need more than 3, because if it's busy people might fight over them. When I was a kid I saw 2 men fight because their children bumped into each other at a race cart track, the children weren't even fighting, the boy who bumped into the other boy had legit started to apologise before the dads decided to get into a screaming match 🙄

You will want as much counter space as possible that is open so that you can have eyes around the whole store from behind the counter. Also the kids and people at the counter will likely try and help themselves to the crickets or loiter around them causing a backlog of people. I would suggest keeping them on one side of the counter and your rats on the other so that it creates a natural flow of traffic.
If you can get either taller legs for the cricket bins or really small freezers, you could possibly put the cricket bins on top of the freezers and have them both against the wall!

@Liv Mes depends on the size of freezer. There are vertical chest freezers that take a smaller footprint.

But you’re right that not everything has hidden meaning. But I mean, a rainbow heart isn’t that hidden. Although even if it isn’t specifically for lgbt+ it’s still a very positive message. (Also I’m pretty sure they’ve stated before they support lgbt+ rights and I think they’ve sold pride merch, but maybe I’m thinking of a different channel.) The cricket bins look really nice against the wall.. it pleases the aesthetic side to me. Plus having them on the counter could risk escape crickets getting away- though from what I know you're going to get escape crickets as soon as those crickets go into the bins. Also didn't know that fact about banded crickets, that's really a useful tip!

Having the bins on the counters seems like it would make it difficult for the employees to efficiently get crickets. Have you considered have the rodent freezer actually out on the floor? That way people can look at and pick out their own frozen rodents and you can put the cricket bins in that nice corner.
At my local reptile store thats what they have. They just have the frozen rodents in bags/containers marked with what size it is with words and color coded. Then you just take it to the register. It works great! They could even put the freezer close(ish) to the register if they were worried about theft

@@conlon4332 the feeding cups seem to be specifically for the pangea food, which is a goopy liquid food. I imagine it would be time consuming to wash all the food off. I think its just a sustainable and easy option.
I think many compostable items need special conditions to break down, and if they're used weekly they would build up faster than they can decompose. But I don't know if isopods would eat them! Great question.
@@conlon4332 I think reusable containers would definitely be better, but that some people use disposable plastic cups to cut down on dishes. If you're going to be using disposable containers either way, biodegradable ones are probably better than plastic, but I'm sure Emily would recommend reusable as the best. I think you can buy some pet enclosures with built in food & water dishes that require a liner (I can't remember what video she mentioned those in, I just know she said she preferred their reusable dishes so they didn't ask for that option), and a biodegradable liner is better than disposing of a lot of plastic.

I love the biodegradable feeding cups! I always tried to wash out the plastic ones with super hot water and use those for a couple of days at a time instead of single use.

If you’re going to have movable step stools, prepare for them to be damaged and/or stolen. Customers can be mean and inconsiderate 😕
Also consider what you can set up for those in wheelchairs etc.

Some people will steal whatever isnt pinned down.
Surely being moveable will make the easier to move out of the way for wheelchairs - also with enclosures at the bottom they are easy to access - they have disabled toilets etc and I’m sure they can come up with a solution to see the higher enclosures but somethings like rex’s tunnel are going to be tricky for wheel chair users - I’d imagine they’d bend over backwards for you if you phone ahead and let them know about your requirements
They would also need more, i can already see some parents keeping those step stools for their own kid to watch everything before putting it back, so in the meantime almost no one else can use it.
I was thinking they probably need more than 3, because if it's busy people might fight over them. When I was a kid I saw 2 men fight because their children bumped into each other at a race cart track, the children weren't even fighting, the boy who bumped into the other boy had legit started to apologise before the dads decided to get into a screaming match 🙄
If COVID is still a thing in the slightest when you open you're going to be disinfecting those step stools everyone's touching like every 2.5 seconds

Gnome: Hello Emily, do you still hear the crickets cry?
You will want as much counter space as possible that is open so that you can have eyes around the whole store from behind the counter. Also the kids and people at the counter will likely try and help themselves to the crickets or loiter around them causing a backlog of people. I would suggest keeping them on one side of the counter and your rats on the other so that it creates a natural flow of traffic.
Looking very much forward to coming to visit when you guys finally open.
If you can get either taller legs for the cricket bins or really small freezers, you could possibly put the cricket bins on top of the freezers and have them both against the wall!
