The 77 smk is an awesome bullet.... only drawback to shooting it at distance is the lack of energy makes it hard to spot impacts on the plate or see splash on your misses.
I have the brother to the KAC, the LMT MWS. It’s accurate enough out to 400-500. I haven’t been any further with it. Plenty of energy at 500. Great video Ron. 👍🏼🇺🇸

I have 16" Aero build with a JP barrel, have had it out to 860' yds. I hate the Battle Rifle argument, when people expect to run these things ragged like a 556 it isn't ideal for it, DMR is perfect role for this setup. When Semi Automatic systems shine in the DMR role, this setup is compact, lightweight, and very accurate! Nice demonstration of what this setup is best used for. I hunt with mine in Georgia, I've put lots of meat in the freezer with it so far!
100% agree with you. I believe the shorter 308s excel in a dmr role. If you’re wanting to run and gun the 308 may not be the best choice for that. Appreciate you taking the time to watch and support the channel!
Your content and presentation are excellent! And thanks so much for avoiding the obnoxious screaming cartoonish "intro's" that so many others seem to think is necessary!! Much appreciated!

Pretty crazy what these rifles are capable of! I’ve also got a 175smk load for this rifle but I prefer shooting the 168s as they’ve got a little more velocity and a better SD. 100% your EC is capable of 1000yds plus as well!
this is the 1st time I have ever commented on UA-cam and you deserve my 1st ever comment :-) . @@MountainsMulletsMerica Absolute. I have recently purchased a Knights SR-25 20" barrel in 308. I am fascinated with everything about the rifle, I can't take my eyes off her. I know your SR-25's are different, but would you happen to know what ammo best suits this 20" version riffle for long rang?
@@anonymouscitizen2732 I don't have enough experience with a 20" SR25 specifically yet to make a recommendation. That said, I've always had great luck with the 175 Federal gold medal match load in my 16" ECC and in a 20" LMT MWS barrel I used to have. Most recently however I've found the 185 juggernaut federal gold medal match load as well as picked up some bullets to handload. Running numbers it appears this is going to take the 308 to the next level. I actually plan to make a video on this bullet in the near future.
You mentioned you used to own an LMT MWS with the 20” barrel. Would it be possible for you to speak on that specific rifle? I know you no longer own it, but given the unique features of the rifle and its claim of deign in a SASS class, I would be very interested on hearing your thoughts. Thank you for your time.
Thank you for watching! Hoping to revisit the 308 content shortly by stretching a 20" out wit the 185 juggernaut. From what I can tell that package should really push the 308 to further distance.

Another fantastic video. I’m impressed at your trigger pulling and how great that round flew! Great job and great shooting. The mustache has to at least add +12 percent accuracy though….
Haha yes I can definitively say that I noticed a performance improvement once I grew the mustache! Trigger pull is something I’ve spent a lot of time focused on, consistency and follow through there is huge with a large frame gas gun. Thanks for watching!
Awesome! Really appreciate you taking the time to watch and support the channel! I've got a ton of content planned so stay tuned. Just wish I could spend more time creating content and less time working my actual job haha.
Great shooting. I have a 20-inch upper on my palmetto, and I get half inch groups at 100. I get 22 inches at 1000 yards. Freedom Munitions ammo. 5-25 scope I'm planning to get a 16-inch upper to swap on for a battle rifle configuration. 1-10 LPVO.
I’ve seen rifles with twist rates slower than 1:10 drop off at 800 yards - hard! My Armalite AR10 has a 1:10 twist 18” barrel with an OSS suppressor. I have shot 175gr SMK loaded by Federal out to 1400 yards repeatedly. Velocity didn’t shift from mid 70’s to mid 50’s. I love this combination.
1400 yds with a 308 AR is epic! Now that I’ve got the old school SR25 with the 24” barrel I may try to really push the limits on 308 and see how far I can make somewhat repeatable hits. Stay tuned!
Great content man! This is so helpful for me. I got 16in 308 Aero precision rifle that I’ve put together on my own and information you provided saves me so much time and money. Thank you! Ps you are a great shooter man
Great video. I have a video shooting 175 gr black hills with an sr25 at a Defoor class. Was disappointed that the range maxed at 600, nice to see you pushing .308 out so far. Impressive capability.
Oh man 600 yds is just getting started for an SR25. With a bit of time behind one they make pushing 308 to distance so much fun. Appreciate you taking the time to watch, I’ll check your video out!
Why does anyone what to use 16-inch barrels on 308 then reduces the cartridges power? From a 16-inch barrel a Hugh amount of powder is burnt outside the barrel. The shortest AR 10 barrel I have used on an AR 10 is 19 inches for 308 win because that was all I could find in MidwayUSA. My own opinion of the 308 is it is a worthless awful cartridge for hunting, so I only wanted a 308 for personal defense because I believe civil war is coming to America to free the country from this KKK communist democrat communism. My AR 10 uppers in 6.5-284 Norma and 6mm - 284 Win have Pac Nor 26-inch barrels that show a Hugh velocity gain over shorter barrels. I have an AR 10 upper in 375 - 300 WSM I am using a Pac Nor 26-inch barrel that shows the 375 - 300 WSM is 150 FPS faster than the 375 H&H mag.
I recently found your channel. You're making great content. The furthest I've shot .308 successfully is 1,200 yards with my GAP Hospitaller and factory 175 SMKs. I went 4 out of 5 at 1,200, but couln't make it work at 1,400.
1200 yds with the 175smk is epic shooting! I have pretty solid results with the 175smk out of my 20” rifles out to 1100 yds or so. I haven’t had the courage to push it further though, now you’ve got me thinking I should try it on video at least once haha
Wow man. Nice channel, just stumbled on it looking for info on 16” .308 barrels. Several videos I see are things I enjoy watching. Beautiful place you have to shoot! Subscribed!
Mine shoots 2158fps with 47gr superformance under hornady 178s..factory gmm 168s run 2452fps..16” DD…I hit 1st round at 1000 with those 178s goin that slow…lol…58moa dialed 26 and held 32…
I am impressed. Have you tried the 185gr Berger juggernauts? I was especially impressed with how well you were calling your own shots. Your position must be rock solid. Maybe talk us through how you build your position or what helps you to be able to manage recoil in 308 that allows you to call your own shots at such distances.
For sure, I’m actually planning on making a video on fundamentals of prone shooting with a precision rifle. Thinking I’ll cover both gas guns and large frame ARs. You can see from my 100yd group I am a little rusty at the moment though haha. I really only shoot the 168 and 175smk in 308. Those bullets are super easy to load for and very available. I haven’t tried the 185 juggernaut yet, if I need more LR performance I prefer swapping to a different caliber. Thanks for watching!
I'm glad I came across this video. I've always been under my own impression, that if a bullet is going less than 2600fps out of the muzzle, it's not going to be good out to 1000 yards. I'm a big velocity chaser, always wanting the fastest rounds.
Oh man, I'll take a high BC bullet at a lower speed over a low BC bullet at high speed any day of the week! I've made a ton of hits with a 308 at distance using a rifle setup with a muzzle velocity well under 2600fps. Maybe not the greatest tool for the job but still very capable.
@@MountainsMulletsMerica thank you! I'll start considering that. I just purchased 2 Remington 700 chambered in 308 and 6.5 creed, and I just starting to look in to reloading for the 6.5. The book load data I've been looking at didn't show any velocity over 2600 for the 6.5 140gr bullets. I was not to happy about that.
@@308c what barrel length on the 6.5CM? I’m thinking something in the 2650-2750 range would be very doable with a 140gr bullet assuming you’re running a 20”-24” barrel.
@@308c also I’d suggest you look at the 130gr class of bullets. I’ve had great results with the Berger 130 ar otm and the 130ELDM. These bullets are able to provide a bc very close to the 140s but a much higher velocity. I’ve swapped to the 130s exclusively for my 6.5cm rifles.
that is so impressive I'm a big fan of the .308. I got the watch quite a few of you videos and you're legit- thank you! btw.. where did you get the light to mount on your steel targets? take care.
Videos like this just reaffirm my position that outside of competition, 308 is still a way better general purpose cartridge than 6.5 creed. Way more common, better barrel life, cheaper etc etc. Not dogging on 6.5 creed though, that is a WONDERFUL cartridge, and every time I shoot my friends, I love it immensely. Really good way to teach a new shooter on a full power caliber rifle.
I was shooting a 20 inch lothar walther 308 gas gun at my last prs match. 178 grain eldm with 41 grains of 2460 going 2460fps. Was able to make hits at the 1000 yard stage and got a hit on a 1 moa target. 308 is not optimal but still is an extremely capable cartridge with the right load
You and me both haha! This 168 load has an extremely consistent SD, single digits over 20 rounds. I decided to use the 168 given the low SD and that's the round that seems to always create the most controversy when talking LR shooting with a .308. I'm confident the 175smk would do better and I may give it a try sometime!
@@MountainsMulletsMerica As a closet F-Open shooter I'd be curious to know what the ES was on the load since SD doesn't really add up until there is lots of shot data.
@@ChambersCustom Looking back in my notes, this load in this rifle is an SD of 8.7 with an ES of 28 (2559 -2587 fps) with an average of 2570 across 20 rounds.
I'd be very interested to see what you could do with that new SIG Spear rifle to compare against this rifle! Loving the content after I found your MRAD videos.

Old video, I know. The one LRP course I shot in 2021, did it with a plain Jane 700 in .308. Fought heat in the gun for three days, but did manage a few 1300 yard hits and 1000 with a fair bit of regularity.
After gettin my first pound of varget and under some 175s and 78bthp hornadys I see why it’s loved…I believe that had alot to do with hits out there…my steels@520 out my backdoor of loadin room and can wear it out with 16” DD from the road off guardrail it’s 770 and I can’t stay positioned long enuff to settle a few on target before it’s like Wayne’s world and CAR!..jump..reposition..I shoot across a valley over my house and most can’t believe it let alone with a 16” .308…
@@charlesmullins3238 oh I’d expect something like that to be an awesome shooter! In my semi auto vs bolt gun video I took my 22” SR25 in 6.5CM out to 1340 yds! Crazy far for a gas gun!

Have you tried the 185 Berger Juggernaut? I have had excellent results in my AR10. It stays very stable going from supersonic to transonic so a great choice for long range.

I joined the 1 mile club with a howa 1500 24" 308 with atomic 175 smk on a 1moa plate. 3rd and 4th round impacts. Well into subsonic yet accuracy was still 1.5moa because it was dancing off edge of the plate. Farthest 1st round impact was 1135 on a 100% ipsc. IME, Going from a 24" 308 bolt to a 16" 308 gas gun (both of equal accuracy). The 16" is even less forgiving in wind past 800 and the rate of drop is much more drastic. However, it's still very capable of 1000y with proper ammo
Dang, 1 mile with a 308 on a 1 moa plate is epic! That's great shooting! Always cracks me up when I hear folks talking about what a poor long distance performer 308 is. It's certainly not on the same level as many of the newer calibers but it's a great performer, especially with a capable rifle and a modern bullet. 308 at 800+yds is challenging out of a 16" AR but that's part of the reason I love shooting it haha. Thanks for watching!
Another great video. I too was wondering about a 16” bbl .308 as I have an M1A Socom. I also want to try my Tikka 24” which will be supersonic at 1000 yds shooting 175 MK and a load of BL-C2. It’s a bit of a struggle for me to get to a 1000 yd range but it is on my list when the weather gets just a tad warmer.
The 168 SMK is truely an unsung hero. I have a Rem700 SPS build and that's what I use for all my 400+ meter shots. I have consistent dope at 1,200 with that set up.
You know I like the 168smk but it’s far from my favorite long range bullet for a 308. It showed well in this video but in my experience something like the 175smk, 178eld, 178bthp or 185 juggernaut offer much more consistent long range performance out of a 308. That said though I still shoot a ton of 168smk haha
@Mountains, Mullets, Merica! Agreed, however cost and availability come into play as we'll for me as I don't often reload. The Berger 185 is absolutely superior, but I'd have to reload my own or sell my first born for factory loads. 🤣 Awesome channel man. Keep up the solid work.
Informative video for sure. Also love your range. I get flat and wooded where I'm at. Best I can do with my 308s is drill a dime at a 100. I do have a question though, you operate in MILs. Would it be roughly the same in MOA based scopes?
My Ar-10 was good for 1000 yards, some Marines have kills confirmed at around 1200 yards with a .308 round. Its a great round for sure, but I changed to 6.5 creedmoor instead.

I run 175 gr on my SR25 EC. I’d like to push it one day at those distances.
Pretty crazy what these rifles are capable of! I’ve also got a 175smk load for this rifle but I prefer shooting the 168s as they’ve got a little more velocity and a better SD. 100% your EC is capable of 1000yds plus as well!

Stay tuned!

Very nice package. You've got a 600 yard capable package no problem! Thanks for watching.

@Mountains, Mullets, Merica! super stoked to see it!
Great stuff man! love the set up
I'm glad I came across this video.
@@MountainsMulletsMerica Thanks I'll play with those as well. I'm still waiting on parts so I haven't even shot the 6.5 yet.

that is so impressive I'm a big fan of the .308. I got the watch quite a few of you videos and you're legit- thank you! btw.. where did you get the light to mount on your steel targets? take care.
First, I like the content. Second, define " effective". I think it's great to test your limits, and it motivates me to push mine. Thanks.
100% agree, 308 isn't flashy by current standards but it is still very capable especially with a longer barrel.
its a do it all cartridge 👍
Fine shooting. What impressed me most was that you chose the 168 over the better BC 175. Great job showing what the little pill will do at distance.

That tikka should be perfect.

Awesome channel man.

Same here, huge fan of the 308 but once you try something like a 6.5CM you instantly see how much easier things can be.
