My favorite amp is the early jtm45 with a tube rectifier and kt66s. They have a amazing sound and that saggy gz34 feel. They’re known for their great crunch but they’re also a favorite clean tone of mine. I love the thick, mid heavy clean even more than the Blackface scooped clean. I’ve put 5751s in a jtm45 to record clean tones and it’s just as great as the crunch sound they have.
Do you think some of the reason for the versatility of even the ability to get a good clean tone is partially due to the alnico celestions ? This is my dream ring I'm heard Johan play through a 67 jtm 50 black flag that sounded absolutely amazingly too!! I too am a fan of kt66s . Kind of like a neo 84 but with more headroom, but we're the same kind of balance in touch sensitivity. And I will say this to, Mullard ecc83 /12 X7s sound absolutely amazing in these old Marshalls especially when you add one Telefunken smooth plate and they're just smooth it out and give it extended eyes and bass frequencies . I have a whole slew of these and amperex if anybody is interested.
Yes it is, like the Holy Grail the famous "Pulsonic" cone recipe was lost (fire), although a couple cone makers have come close, nobody has the recipe!
Mind is officially blown! You guys made that sucker sound amazing. Just when you thought Simon and Johan had finally run out of cool, then you hit us with this. Well played sirs 👍🎸😎
Agree, but put that strat into a BFSR and using a 4x12 with Vox alnicos (same speaker) as the ext. speaker gets you on a slightly different, but no less astonishing, path.
The combination of that perfect Les Paul Custom and this 45 might just be the best guitar tone I've ever heard..... White 76 Custom is my dream guitar. Enjoy. Another great clip Johan. Well played
That’s great tone!!!!!!! It’s so dynamic. It allows the sound of the guitar to really shine through. When you plug in the Les Paul there’s no mistaking what kinda guitar it is and the same for the strat. Both sound nasty as hell. I would literally pay an embarrassingly large amount of cash to just be able to play that thing for a couple hours in a large room cranked
It's been awhile since you played through all the JTM45 years. The alnico speakers makes up for the dominant bass quality in the tone stack. But it was great to hear, Johan. God jul!
That would have been the super rare transition amps from late '65 to early '66 that used two 50 watt RS Hygrade (Radio Spares) output transformers, and still using surplus military 5881 (6L6) tubes. I was born in April '66 so it's been my dream to score one of those first 1959 Super Lead with the single Drake transformer and EL34's. Not many of them out there tho... Best Regards 🎸
Amazing amazing tones... thanks for share, dear johan... I have a challenge for you: how to obtain these vintage tones (that can we see in this channel) with the equipment that is currently for sale... ( maybe there is the next level for your channel...)
I may agree, my AC10 JMI clone head through a 1 x 12" w/Celestion Blue clone speaker is the shizz, along with my JTM-1H through a 1 x 12 w/greenback. Those have become my favorite clean tones (I mostly play clean), the greenback seems to tame the JTM highs, which can be too much through a Blue?
That definitely is completely mind blowing sir! I think it's a glorious thing for you to not only get your hands on these rare vintage Marshall gems, but to share them with our ears worldwide!...how much would something that awesome cost?
Thanks David! Much pricier than the early 70s metal panels I usually play. Isolated this amp kills my metal panels, but in my mixes they are what I need. Cheers
@@JohanSegeborn yeah I figured they be way out of reach if you can even find them here in the States. I bought a 1979 model 2203 JMP mkII full stack back in '92 that I still have and use, its very sturdy and has never broke down! CHEERS!
Yeah we can close down the internet, that’s the ultimate tone right there. I can’t get my hands on that amp, so I’ll settle for a Carr Mercury V. Could probably get close if I ran it through the cab you were using there Johan!
Nice variety of styles, I really appreciate your videos. I am usually a jubilee guy, but these old marshalls have wicked clean and slightly dirty sounds. My favorite is blending a vox and marshall which you can do with backbreakers or just using a Tonejunkies Kemper rig of both amps mixed. You cannot fear the reaper playing that!
Best sounding Marshall I've heard! Thinking they were the same speakers in Clapton combo in the Blues Breakers. Think that 59 Les Paul and that combo is all he used..People say he used a Range master treble boost, But I don't think so, he never mentioned he used one that I have seen. Think it just a ploy to try to sell more treble boosters...lol...Thanks for posting this great demo of a incredible amp!
I built a copy of an early jtm it's pretty much a straight rip of this era with tube rectifier and kt66s. It sounds good thru my 2x12 mesa cab with vintage 30s but not as good as this. Those amps are highly dependent on the type of speakers used. Id love to get my hands on some those used here! Great sound guys!
Having now heard it, yes, great, CLASSIC sound! Heard on many a 60's and 70's recording! It's almost TOO bassy with an LP! I'd be tempted to just run any hum bucker guitar in the treble input, and single coil in the normal!
It’s funny that when you hear ‘that tone’ (which isn’t easy to describe 59 someone who is not familiar with it), you just kind of know ‘that’s it’. Well done!
sounded so hot, as if something is always about to explode, but it never explode. You and Simon should try also the new SC20h with those alnico speakers!!!
This is definitely my favorite kind of guitar and amp tones, especially with the Pre CBS Stratocaster. That would be my ultimate gear, something like this.
Definitely a great tone, but I must admit I like it more with the strat here, which sounds incredibly glassy and classic imo. With the LP I seem to miss something here, probably the complex and less trebly bark of the pulsonic GBs.
This amp feels very similar to the ac30. I had no idea that alnico speakers had such a big impact. I have an ac30 reissue with 2 alnico blue speakers, I'll try connecting it to a 1959hw. This video sounds very impressive.

The Jam Unit Yeah! I just checked out your video. Nice! Man, I love it. I bought mine from a music store that had used it for a concert. Used once, sitting in storage for five years. 1500 dollars! I bought it less than a minute after they sent out the email trying to get rid of it.

@Johan Segeborn One other thing. I have compared old vintage alnico blues and silvers to newish alnico blues...my new ones were well broken in and were from around the year 99 or 2000. They sounded just as good as the old ones. I almost preferred them. To my ears it may be the ultimate Marshall tone, thank you again.
And again!
Thanks, I’m really glad to hear that! :-)
Oh man, this one makes me so happy! I don't know how many times I've watched your old JTM videos... the ones with the three early ones. Thank you!
Thanks, that makes me glad!

_The_ Marshall sound that has always lived in my head. Superb. Loved it with LP and Strat!
Thanks, great to hear that!
Unreal-wow! It's amazing that you guys can track down these ultra-rare amps.
Thanks!
Amazing!!! That tone is perfect for Johan. The strat tone is to die for too!
Thanks :-)
The Holy Grail of Sound.......
Thanks Jim! :-)
Lol " what is the purpose of the grail? " " Who does it serve?" " The king my Lord" .
Yes it is, like the Holy Grail the famous "Pulsonic" cone recipe was lost (fire), although a couple cone makers have come close, nobody has the recipe!
Amazing jtm that shaped the world. John has the best guitar channel on UA-cam.
Thanks, I’m so glad to hear that!
Agreed :-)
Would love to hear something with P90s through that rig!
@Edwin Ira Nope. No one gives a shit.
@Ryker Santino Nice fake accounts. Go spam someone else.
Why does this combination work so damn well. Those early strats too! man
Mind is officially blown! You guys made that sucker sound amazing. Just when you thought Simon and Johan had finally run out of cool, then you hit us with this. Well played sirs 👍🎸😎
Thanks my friend ;-)
Holy shit !! that strat tone! couldn’t be better
Agree, but put that strat into a BFSR and using a 4x12 with Vox alnicos (same speaker) as the ext. speaker gets you on a slightly different, but no less astonishing, path.
Not many vids of this rare head/cab pairing. You’ve captured yet another historic relic’s grand nature.
Thanks, I’m glad to hear that!
Thanks for sharing this amazing amp and cab. Sounds fantastic!
Thanks Paul, glad to hear it!
I could listen to that all day.
Thanks my friend :-)
Dude!!! The Gibson just pushes that "Crunch" to that sweet Marshall tone! Love it!! Thanks Johan!!
Thanks José! Glad to hear it
Its amazing, you show tones that you think will never be beaten, and then, lo, a week or so later, even better tones.
Thanks! :-)
Great classic tones! Loved the lowend thump on the first riffs with the Les Paul. Great stuff Johan, as always!
Thanks, really good to hear that!
Brilliant...thank you for feeding us all the delicious tone videos. Looking forward to more in 2020!!! Cheers!!!
Glad to hear it! Cheers!
AND ONCE AGAIN.....A COMPLETELY AMAZING VIDEO. THE BEST YOU TUBE CHANNEL FOR GEARHEADS. THANK YOU AND CHEERS.
Thanks man, that’s great to hear! Cheers
Well done Johan and Simon!
Great riffs and Tones!
Enjoyed the Video effects as well!
Thanks for sharing Brothers!
Be Well and Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas my friend
Thank you for your work Johan! Big fan! Cheers from Poland!
Thanks Marek! Cheers!
Oooh, yeah! Lovely sound!
Thanks my friend :-)
I think I saw a couple holy angels of tone fly out of that thing. Dear god that sounds like heaven. Incredible job guys. Wow...
Thanks Mike! Glad to hear it
This stack makes Simon sound like Hendrix on Star sprangled banner :D
Thanks, yeah he sounded brutal here!
Really brings out the tones in both guitars.
Sounds amazing! Thanks for posting Johan ..........
Glad to hear it, thanks Charles!
This channel is like the Smithsonian Institute for Guitar tone; minus all the government grants and snobby tuxedos.
Thanks man, yeah no Tuxedos here ;-) Cheers
Yeah the dress code is a little different but also present in this institute - obligatory crocs and caps ;-)
The combination of that perfect Les Paul Custom and this 45 might just be the best guitar tone I've ever heard..... White 76 Custom is my dream guitar. Enjoy. Another great clip Johan. Well played
Thanks Jeremy! Glad you like it
fantastic sounding amp and cabinet, great demo Johan
Thanks Mark, glad to hear it!
Wow! Those speakers are really sweet. What a rig.
That’s great tone!!!!!!! It’s so dynamic. It allows the sound of the guitar to really shine through. It sounds marvelous Johan !!! 🤩 cheers and Merry Christmas !
Merry Christmas, Mitchell! Cheers!
Those are wonderful amps, I own a similar 1964!
Oh man that’s the sound! Love it! ❤️🤘🏻
Thanks Glen, glad to hear it!
Yes, great sound of both guitars!!
With tone and playing like that Santa better come to your homes first this year! Excellent video and merry Christmas to you and Simon!
Merry Christmas Jeff! :-)
Wow great tone! Both of those guitars are pristine.wow what a find on that amp! Great vid.
Thanks Caleb
trully outstanding. quite specific tone in that head
Oh man, it’s so dynamically responsive! We know it sounds amazing, but I’m sure that thing just FEELS amazing to play.
Thanks for including the Strat. Sounds great with both guitars.
Thanks Patrick!
It's been awhile since you played through all the JTM45 years. The alnico speakers makes up for the dominant bass quality in the tone stack. But it was great to hear, Johan. God jul!
God Jul Steffen!
Beautiful sounding. I can't fathom why someone would give this a thumbs down.🤔
Thanks Ron!
Nice one Johan that les paul custom through that baby really gave me chills…..though the strat sounded pretty hot too.
Whenever I see a Johan vid pop up I know that some tasty Marshall tones are afoot!!
Thanks my friend!
THAT is the sound...and to kick it up,just slam it with a treble booster...rock and roll Heaven!
Thanks Ricky!
JTM 45/100 was Malcolm Young`s preferred recording amp pre-powerage .

Ah! It seems you've found MY amp, thank you!!

Early Marshall and early Vox are the Holy Grail of guitar tone

That Randy Rhoads Les Paul Custom!! What a dream setup
Johan for President... of Earth!
Hahaha! ;-) Cheers
Better carry a pair of earplugs around in your pockets
Great amp and great video! I wonder if the Les Paul Custom has the infamous Tar Back humbuckers. Lots of Gibsons had them in 1976.
Fantastic tone!
Thanks!

Fender Stratocaster on Neck Pickup + This amp = Ear orgasm
Hahahaha! Indeed ;-)
Sounds incredible. 😎🔥☀️🌙
Thanks Kieren!
Loving that amp n cab!

The Ringway Music decal...............................Now that's historical. Great sounding rig!
Glad to hear it ;-) Cheers
Now that’s a great sound!
Thanks Brett!
Angus Young's recording amp is a JTM45 like this one. It's just lovely.
1965... same age as me. Great sounds. That Strat sounded like early SRV. I believe he used bigger cabs
It’s funny that when you hear ‘that tone’ (which isn’t easy to describe 59 someone who is not familiar with it), you just kind of know ‘that’s it’.
Well done!
Rock and roll as it was meant to be played..with a Marshall! Great job as always!!
Thanks!
Tweed Fenders rock and rolled looong before Marshalls ;)
Any guitar amp which is based on the Bassman is bound to be a great amp. The Marshall JTM45 is no exception!
The holy grail for sure
Woooow nothing wrong with the 76 les paul custom. I'll have to get myself one!! Great demo as usual :-)
Thanks man :-)
sounded so hot, as if something is always about to explode, but it never explode. You and Simon should try also the new SC20h with those alnico speakers!!!
This is definitely my favorite kind of guitar and amp tones, especially with the Pre CBS Stratocaster. That would be my ultimate gear, something like this.

Oh, my G.... thank you Sir!
Thanks! :-)
Always preferred alnico over ceramics
They bring out the personality in just about any amp
Same here... alnicos all the way, ceramic speakers hurt my ears - strident and harsh. And so it is with pickups
It's sounds wonderfull
He has a Randy’s Rhoads les Paul custom that’s tuff
That guitar is amazing, holds up very well to bursts and
I liked the Strat going through that rig the most and I’m a Les Paul man. Wow.
Thanks Scott!
Definitely a great tone, but I must admit I like it more with the strat here, which sounds incredibly glassy and classic imo. With the LP I seem to miss something here, probably the complex and less trebly bark of the pulsonic GBs.
Sounds beautiful as it is. I think Marshall got it right 1st (2nd?) time. I'd love to hear some pedals through it too.
Thanks Toni! Let’s do that next time this amp features
This amp feels very similar to the ac30. I had no idea that alnico speakers had such a big impact. I have an ac30 reissue with 2 alnico blue speakers, I'll try connecting it to a 1959hw. This video sounds very impressive.
You’ll likely will blown the blues, you need a quartet to match a jtm output power
@@IgnisIban Thank you for your reply. I would follow your advice and be careful with the number of units and output.
@Johan Segeborn This is my favorite tone on any of your video's. It sounds versatile and the cleans are amazing. The overdrive sounds smooth and chewy which I love. So much character and many shades of clean through overdrive. I love it. Is that cab open back or closed? I love the sound of those big bottle tubes. It does have the KT66 tubes right?
Thanks, glad to hear it! It’s indeed KT66 and it’s closed back.
God dam that's killer. Obviously the 66 jtm is awesome but the alnico speakers add something amazing to it.
Great sound and another brilliant vid...but...although you showed close ups of the front panel the controls were all at noon and you were not plugged in, there were no close ups of the settings when you were playing (sorry if there were and I missed them). Other than that, loved it.
We’re they similar in specs to the Jensen P12N-higher powered alnicos. Reminds me a lot of some recent magnavox P232’s. Love the response. Clean to a certain point, then spilling into dynamic grittiness. You do a great job showcasing all this classic gear. It will be the last of it besides the original recordings and you remind us of what we’re missing. Nostalgia isn’t always a sunshiny memory.
Thanks, these are only 15W actually
I have the 40th anniversary JTM45/100 stack reissue with the T-652 alnico’s. Sounds just like this. But I have to run just one cab at 50 watts otherwise the people in the neighboring valley start to call and ask if they can have a shwang. 🎸
I've got one of those stacks too!
The Jam Unit Yeah! I just checked out your video. Nice! Man, I love it. I bought mine from a music store that had used it for a concert. Used once, sitting in storage for five years. 1500 dollars! I bought it less than a minute after they sent out the email trying to get rid of it.
Have you considered reviewing the Fender Champion 20 amp? It's great and I bet you could make it sound amazing.
Fender had tweeds, Marshall had basketweaves!
Yo that's so good. A much preferred tone for me. Even for high gain.
You always make me lust after things I don't need and cant afford. Got any swamp land your trying to unload.....oh but of course not you would never sell that priceless land.haga another good vid bro.
Thanks brother ;-)
@Johan Segeborn One other thing. I have compared old vintage alnico blues and silvers to newish alnico blues...my new ones were well broken in and were from around the year 99 or 2000. Totally raw strat-tone. Alnicos sound very different from greenbacks, that's for sure.
More dirt and Grrrrrrrrrr!
Thanks Inge! :-)
Already the first riff with the LPC says everything. I wonder if in real it sounds as tight as in the vid - as I would not align a JTM with a tight low end, usually.

Well if you look close the bass was rolled all the way off on at least part of the demo Probably the LP Where as my 800 you have to roll the treble and presence mostly off Unique beasts Great demo
Hi :)
in which year did marshall change its logo? 1966 ??
I love the head, but I actually prefer green or blackback 25 watters. This cab is just a bit harsh on the top end for me.
Hi Johan. Sounds amazing !! A little off topic but do you have any recommendations for replacement valves/tubes for the JTM45 ? Thanks
