Yamaha Cross Connect Review - $3k

- Опубліковано 2 сер 2024
- The Yamaha Cross Connect is a sleek commuter from Yamaha, a household brand name going for a balance of price, performance, efficiency, and a purist feel, for years they did their homework studying their applications on Haibike, Giant, etc, using data and analysis to make offerings of their own. The PW SE motor is smooth and very efficient, coupled with the protected PW-X display, it makes for an intuitive and enjoyable riding feel, measuring cadence, torque, and rear wheel speed, this is complemented well by the hydraulic brakes and front suspension fork. A 3 year warranty and a dealer network that gets reimbursed for working on your bike which means much less customer issues on an already proven and reliable electric system, a perk some of the smaller brand names are still catching up to. Plastic was chosen for the fenders, pedals, and the rear LED light housing, the rear LED plastic housing has been known to get damaged in shipping and is in a vulnerable spot for loading, so take care working around it, although there is some plastic on the bike, it was likely chosen to keep cost down.

Thanks for stopping by the the shop it was a nice surprise, I did enjoy doing this review with you. Wish we had a large frame bike for me to ride I looked a bit to big on the medium size frame but then again I still look to big even for the large frame. I cringed every time a train went by. But that is an advantage we have in that if someone wants to test ride an E bike and you’re close to a train station you can ride to within two blocks of our front door I’ve had people come from as far south as San Diego and is far north as Santa Barbara using the train, they have purchased bikes and taken them back with them without having to get on our crowded freeways
Had a blast hanging out, thanks for always going on camera with me and doing these adventures Sam. You're awesome :D
Samuel I didn’t catch the shop name and location?
@@mjl325is it’s now called Fullerton electric bikes.
@@teammxm thank you. I am one of those that has owners a few Yamaha power sport products and really would love to see how these are
Love my Crossconnect...however a Display C option would be nice .....retrofit possible ? should be !
Love Yamaha products; I was gifted with a Yamaha keyboard in the 80s and got hooked with all their product lines.
Nice! I had a Yamaha acoustic electric guitar and really enjoyed it. It's amazing how many products these guys make and sell! I didn't realize that their logo was tuning forks until I was a young adult... it's clever, really calls out precision, reliability, and beauty.
yeh i had a yamaha m cycle in the 80's and yamaha synths!...now an ebike motor in my haibike!
I really like the Camera it is so clear and you do a very good job I feel as I know you and Sam. I never miss your videos my son says I am becoming a expert on ebikes
Awesome! Glad you like the new camera setup. It always feels good to know that people enjoy the work we're doing so thanks for sharing your positive comment, Mark :D
I appreciate your unbiased reviews!!
Well, I appreciate your comment, thanks :D
Excellent Review! You provide a lot of good information. Thank You!
It's not very common knowledge outside Asia, but Yamaha has been in the ebike business since 1993. These weren't prototypes either, or one of's to specialized customers. Yamaha has been making ebikes for decades for their local Japanese market, mainly for commuter-focused mamacharis or powered "Mom bikes." They have decades of experience making and tuning motors for that market which is why their current motors are tuned the way they are.
Support is immediate and powerful because if you're a mom and you have 2 children + groceries on your bike, any hesitancy or lack of power on the bike's launch is an immediate product-killer. Support is best at lower cadences because that's the usual cadence preference for Japanese moms.
And of course, the motors are completely bulletproof. Because if you're a busy Japanese mom and your schedule is booked 5 years in advance, you have no time to deal with bicycle bullshit. You buy it, you use it, and it better not complain for at least 5 years of daily, hard use.
Thanks for the history, Roxlimn! I've heard of those mamachari bicycles, maybe we will see them in North America someday too :D are you from Europe or Asia? If you've got a link to an electric mamachari please post it, I'd love to see one.
My experience with Yamaha is guitars, motorcycles and generators. They are masterful engineers and manufacturers... their mid-range always shoots for highest reliability/performance/price values + stellar warranties. These bikes will win a LOT of high praise... wouldn't be surprised to see them take over as highest selling e-bikes.
Good decent odometer display even though it's not as big,and doesn't seem to be as modern like other E-bike displays the backlight settings with the color from blue to green kinda makes up for it.Shock absorbers are almost always a must have,but... I do see you have the suspension fork so that also makes it comfortable to ride.
I definitely appreciate a good suspension fork and seat post, especially with efficient tires like this. What bike are you looking at Hector? Or do you already have something?
I was referring to this Yamaha e-bike. My mistake when I said shock absorbers when technically it's called suspension fork right...?😊yeah,having shock absorber and the suspension fork is probably asking for too much. I mean it's not like you're going off-road right?
Oh how I miss that train. Used to put me to sleep at night as a kid :)
Been viewing your channels and like your reviews. As for this bike, I like the brand and style, but with my bad knee, I believe I need to shop a bike with a throttle. I like the quietness of this mid drive, but not clear if 250W mid drive vs 500W hub are equal to take me up (170lbs) a modest hill using pure throttle? Maybe the aveton pace 500 or level seems a good alternative.
Awesome bike. When is Yamaha going to make this bike available in Australia? I will be first in line to buy!
Some of us that have reached our best by date (3 score and 10) are getting back
into bicyclea because of the electric assist. Unfortunately a lot of us have
not been able to maintain our trim and low weight bodies. The one thing so many
manufactures and reviewera don’t tell us is what the weight limit of bike is. I
would also prefer 36 spoke wheels. The last 32 spoke wheels I had I just
bashed the living snot out of them with the rough roads. Need 36 spokes, not
going to be racing at my age.
great audio
Nice bike helmet, what model of abus is it?
That bike is exactly what I'm looking for but I'm here in Canberra, Australia.
Oh... Well, maybe you can find a retailer in a nearby country that will ship globally? I think Motostrano (from Redwood City, California) ships internationally. Send them a message! www.motostrano.com/
25:30 I just busted out laughing when you turned the camera on the bike...Sam's a big dude ! Yamaha was always slow to the punch, this doesn't surprise me .
Haha, yeah, I try to call it like it is. Sam said that he looks big even on the large frame. Wish we had one on hand for this review, but maybe next time :)
Well? How about the range of miles using this model of motor battery arrangement? Any thoughts?
Great review, great bike!!
I drove a haibike with the Yamaha motor system. Very nice and quiet motor. Liked it better than the Bosch., which seemed to make more noise.
Hi Pablos, that has been my experience as well. Bosch Performance Line drive units tend to produce more noise because of the smaller sprocket that spins 2.5x per crank revolution (it's run through a reduction gearing system). Their Active Line motors are quieter, but I do really like Yamaha, outside of the lower max RPM support. This motor seemed to peak around 105 or 110 RPM vs. 120 for Performance Line Bosch.
Here's the official page that does state max RPM on the PWseries SE at 110
ElectricBikeReview.com okay. Yes, the store that is the haibike dealer said that haibike uses both systems. Also the display is small but rugged but wasn’t removeable, and the bosch had the intuvia, which is easier to read. Great brand, the haibike. In another two weeks there will be the annual ebike event in Utrecht ( Holland ) and they have 90 different ebike companies. And a big test circuit. Last year even Rad bikes were there to test.
yamaha is cool, i have a haibike sduro 1.0 great motor
Sweet! Still holding up well for you?!
How theft proof are the batteries?
would that small frame suit a man 5ft 5ins tall, also is it possible to change front and rear mechs to ultegra.
I like the fact that it’s an actual Yamaha branded bike. And I have some fondness for the Yamaha system because the first ebike I test rode was a Winora (part of the Accell group) with this system. But I don’t get the 2-by system. It looks old fashioned to me, and it doesn’t feel right for an ebike.
Cool! Are you in Europe, Chris? I'm glad the PWseries SE offers 110 RPM and feel that their tuning is great, but I agree that the 2x drivetrain is unnecessary for many riders and just adds weight and complexity. I've had regular bicycles with 2x and 3x chainrings and very rarely shifted... I'd leave the chain on the middle ring for simplicity. Sometimes for a big hill I'd have to shift for easier climbing but that might be unnecessary if the cassette had a wider range like 11-42 so my favorite setup is 10 speed 11-42 or 11-46 if it's a mountain bike :)
ElectricBikeReview.com I’m in the U.K. I’m guessing Winora isn’t sold in North America. But yeah I never shifted on the front when I test rode it. Maybe I was cross chaining a bit but with a 1-by you wouldn’t be worried about that anyway. I’m glad the new motor supports higher cadence.
Snagging you pants on the front derailleur / chaining? Dude, fold your pants leg and pull your sock over it. Worked in 1956, still does. Way inexpensive too.
People who buy ebikes want their ride to be easier though. So they don't want to do that. A lot of my customers aren't cyclists so the bikes we sell the most of have chain guards and guides to remove that issue. Plus the range you get with a 2x in the front is somewhat irrelevant with the motor assist anyway.
great news I was waiting for to the big boys to get in there (yamaha), and chinese bikes out. Looking forward to seeing what Honda will offer and when..
Do Yamaha (& giant for that matter) offer replacement batteries? I can't seem to find anything. What do you do when the battery hits end of life after 3-4 years?
Jake Odom it’s a modular battery you can get it from any Haibike Yamaha or Giant EBike dealer
With bafang constantly offering stronger and stronger motors to satisfy customers need for speed I'm really surprised that some company's are still making ebikes with 20 mph being top speed.
At least it can go faster than 20... I tried a haibike with that same power train and it wouldn't go over 20 no matter what. Now that was aggravating. Still though what's the big attraction here? 3000$ 36 volts blah blah. I suppose it's like Yamaha jet skis. They rent them out they get the hell beat out of them and really reliability and inter compatibility is a big deal. The bike is nothing special and seems overpriced but you can't beat the warranty.
@@jclar3565 I agree with a lot of your input here, this should be a reliable ebike, you can get it without the fenders and lights for $600 less, Yamaha products are finally here... the big deal for me is that they were so tight lipped about everything at Interbike and they modified the motor controller to be super smooth and responsive. It's a great product, but there are many products to choose from these days for less if you're budget sensitive. I think Yamaha also has a speed motor, excited to see what that's all about at some point. Glad they're doing it vs. Shimano who is still leaning purist with 32km top speeds only.
Make the charger lightet and easier to break so you should buy again. It is Yamaha, not Apple.
1:01 Personal Space issues in 3....2...
L is too small. It needs an XL for sure if not an XXL. The big guy looks like he is riding on a small.
can i buy extra battery ?
Wumiti Aierken yes there available and being a modular design all of the models have the same battery
@@teammxm where I can order it?
Wumiti Aierken any Yamaha EBike dealer, Haibike or Giant dealer
@@teammxm got it, thank you
Yamaha warranty support sucks so badly in the US. They hardly have any dealers
Had trouble distinguishing certain words with the train in the background. Wrong location for a review.
Yeah, thanks for the feedback Rick... I switched cameras recently and my older one cut a lot of background noise. I didn't realize that they'd be coming by so frequently and I just wanted to shoot while the sun was still out. Feedback received, will do better!
please tell me you don't wear your helmet so loose when you're riding
not enough top speed :(
Stop with whining about plastic! It doesn't rust which has been a big issue on fendered bikes I've had in the past.
60 fps!
That's right! Got a new camera setup... doing my best to combat wind noise and train noise :P hope this worked for you. The gimbal setup also changed.
You need a quieter environment.
Yeah, thanks for the feedback... I didn't realize it would be so pronounced. Will do better next time ;)
Premium price, not the best bike out there.
Looks like 500 $ bike
This rack is shit. :/ you will tunr the back of the bike around while lifting the rear of bike holding the end of the rack. I almost do this every day oO.
29.99 maybe this guy was thinking of something else
if yamaha puts a double chain ring in the front they have no idea what they're doing... sad
@@specialist-in-tech False, the concept of ebike was invented and patented in the late 1800s. yamaha only invented the pedal assist system and yeah they get credit for that but things have evolved to a 1x front ring to be the most efficient logical thing to do. (not just my opinion) if yamaha hasn't figured this out by now then yeah, they don't know what they're doing. Thanks for your misinformed and pathetic troll wanna be comment.
You only ride e-bike if youre old but if youre young hell nah
Idiot
I'm 5'11. Will M fit? The one in your video (also M) look kind of small for Sam. What's Sam's height? Thank you for the great reviews.
