- The Yamaha Cross Core is a sleek affordable commuter from Yamaha, a household brand name going for a balance of price, performance, efficiency, and a purist feel, for years they did their homework studying their applications on Haibike, Giant, etc, using data and analysis to make offerings of their own. The PW SE motor is smooth and very efficient, coupled with the protected PW-X display, it makes for a intuitive and enjoyable riding feel, measuring cadence, torque, and rear wheel speed, an extremely advanced system for a value priced ebike. A 3 year warranty and a dealer network that gets reimbursed for working on your bike which means much less customer issues on an already proven and reliable electric system, a perk some of the smaller brand names are still catching up to. In comparison to its big brother, the Cross Connect, it is missing fenders, rear rack with light, and a suspension fork, and hydraulic brakes, this shaves $600 off the price and the bike still includes bosses to add your own rack and fenders, however no tapered head tube to swap out the rigid fork.

what is 250W power like on a mid drive? I know on a hub drive it is not very much at all.
Hi Blaine, it's plenty of power when used in conjunction with a cassette... the power delivery comes down to peak torque, because it can either help you climb and start or hit and maintain a higher top speed based on whatever gear you choose. Keep in mind that 250 watts is nominal and the peak out put is 500. Peak torque is 70Nm which is right in the middle of most mid-motors. The e-mountain specific motor from Bosch puts out 75Nm for comparison. One reason these companies stick to 250 watts nominal is that these mid-drive motors are very expensive to build and the primary market for electric bicycles has been Europe, where the regulation is set at 250. In many European nations, the top speed is also limited to 25km/h (roughly 15.5mph). I hope this feedback helps. I have a 500W middrive, and I think it's inappropriate fast because it easily exceeds 25 mph. It's more moped territory than assisted bicycle.

Bought this one. Spend 400 miles in 1 month. I would say so many weird nose as I pedal but nothing is broken yet. Love the smoothness of the motor. Also even without the motor, it is a nice bike that is really good to bike around. I change the tire to continental gp 5000 and the pedal to shimano pd clipless. I maintain my cadence at 90rpm. The whole eco battery last for 100 miles.
Thanks Court for stopping by I definitely think this review was informative I also feel privileged that Yamaha picked us as one of its retail dealers I remember as a kid in 1975 my dad purchased me a Yamaha bicycle I think it was called the Yamaha Moto bike a couple years later when we moved to Coachella valley he got me a YZ 80 my first Motorcycle was a Yamaha fast forward a couple years later And he and I rode a DT 250 all the way from Oceanside to the desert we nickname that bike the Ironhorse I put thousands of miles on it and went through about three motors and a few toppings that bike instilled in me wanderlust. Some of the motorcycles from Yamaha that I have owned personally over the years were the RD350, TDM850, YSR80 from Canada, and a V-Max, I currently have three Yamaha’s in my garage a T-MAX, RX50 and a DT50lc needless to say I like Yamaha I currently have Harley‘s, Honda’s a Montessa Triumph, bultaco’s and a Suzuki also in my garage I think I have a problem.

Hey Sam -- you looked pretty cramped on that bike even though it is the largest size. Can I ask how tall you are? I'm trying to figure out if the Cross Core is just too small for me even in a Large. Thanks!

Yamaha makes quality stuff. Their motorcycles are the highest rated in the world.
Got this Ebike back in June. 2400$ in the US. I changed the tire to Continental GP 5000, and I changed the pedal to Shimano PD m324. I have ridden this bike for 1100 miles. Overall I am really satisfied. it is not the best designed, not the fastest and not the cheapest. However, this bike wins my heart for the overall e-bike. 500wh battery is the largest in this group. Yamaha ebike motor is so far much better than Bosch (Mainly because of how Bosch motor cutoff their power after reaching the speed limit. Yamaha does it smoothly). I have not seen the faulty of the Yamaha ebike engine. Shimano sora does its job in the groupset. The weight is 19kg. One downside of this bike is it has a lot of weird sounds. Mostly that I have is clanking sound when pedaling. I have no idea where does it come from. However, if I put on my headphone, I don't hear any sound at all! I just continue to bike and I haven't had any problem. If I feel strong, I usually turn off the motor and ride it as a normal bike. It is quite a good bike. I don't like the disc brake but it is personal. I believe a bicycle does not need a disc brake. Unless you are a pro who race in the rain or a real MTB, you don't need a disc brake.
Agree with you. Disc brakes are ridiculous fad on road bikes especially. Give me caliper brakes any day.
@@skcyclist i live in the pacific northwest in the US, that gets pretty wet for a good portion of the year. Plus, i often ride on gravel paths. That combination of wet and dust eats my rim brake pads (and the rims) at an incredible rate. And braking on wet rims can get sketchy, have to remember to apply the brakes for a bit after splashing through puddles, and always plan for a bit of lag when starting to brake before the rim dries off after a couple revolutions.
So, no, disk brakes are not only for pros or for MTB, they are very much a real world solution for a decent portion of the everyday riding population. And this coming from a guy who mostly owns lovely classic bikes with top of the line rim brakes with Kool-Stop Salmon pads, on aluminum rims. :-)
2,400 without mudguards, lights, rack etc. But you're praising the aluminum headlight? It uses Its own motor, so costs should be low.
Hmm, I feel like these are two separate points. I praise whatever stands out as being high quality, unique, or well-designed. The price could probably be lower, but I think they might not want to cannibalize the other companies that use their drive system (Haibike, Giant), and maybe leave extra margin for dealers to thrive? It is kind of a name brand product, perhaps we'll see prices drop more in 2020.
Yamaha needs to come out with an XL frame size. L is just too small for a lot of people.
Sam's point is really important to me, I'm so glad he brought it up. I would hate for assist to top me out! Supplement my power, that's _all_. Extra happy it's on such a nice quiet, smooth motor/control system! Hoping for a little more Townie upright &/or Vektron commuter focus, CVT/belt, etc., but already very promising.

I just purchased haibike sduro for my wife with pw-se motor (2019). I own a cube with bosch active line plus. My bike has only 50 Nm vs. 70 Nm of Yamaha. You can simply tell the difference BUT yamaha is so much louder! It's even annoying. My wife had a first time ride with ebike ever and of course she liked it a lot but she also claimed about the noise. For those living on a relative flat area i would recommend bosch active line plus because you can bearly hear it and once you are going through the woods it's really a pleasure! Unfortunately there were only 29ers with this bosch engine and my wife definately needs 27.5" because she's small. That's my first impression about it.

The straight steering tube of the rigid fork is a not a "con." In fact, it is actually more difficult to find a tapered steerer 700C suspension fork than one with a straight steering tube. I know because my own bike has a tapered steerer and I have found that there are almost no 700C suspension forks with a tapered steerer. The 29er forks are not really an option because they have to much travel compared to 700C "trekking bike" suspension forks.

Japanese manufacturing is very reliable.....unlike Chinese products.
I tried all the acoustic guitars in the store and the one that sounded the best was a Yamaha.
They make solid, high quality, well designed products.
I like Yamaha too, exciting to see them innovating on their own drive systems and bringing some new products to market in the US!
You just reminded me. My first motorcycle was a 1969 Yamaha Enduro gold. I saw it out of the corner of my eye, drove back and bought it on the spot for about $500. It was almost brand-new. I wrote it every day for two or three weeks before I got a little tired of it. Couldn't wait to get home it was kind of like the first girlfriend haha
I have a Haibike Sduro 1.0 lowest entry bike from haibike but it still really great experience, i added Tule rear rack, bag and panniers plus locking ego grips plus usb rechargeable front and rear lights. It's a great bke, goes up any hill with ease.

When I see the thumbnail and the bike pictured isn't a Step-Thru, I get excited. You've been a role Court, keep em coming. Yamaha keeps it simple and lets the customer add whatever they want. No front suspension, good, i keep mine locked out most of the time anyway. No rack and fenders, good, I will take my other bike if theres a chance of rain. Its an Ebike, i almost never ride in the rain. Narrow tires, good, I dont need 2+" size tires, I want efficiency and I dont need the "comfort" benefit. This bike in stock form is PERFECT and priced right.

Hi Court. I purchased this bike and the frame stiffness is killing me! Can you suggest a seat suspension please?. I am 215 lbs and am looking at the Suntour, Cane Creek, and Kinekt sytems. Redshifts Sports also has introduced one as well. Opinions on these vary all over the place!

Those are Electric Technician sunglasses... I got them when I was in 7th grade, about 20 years ago. I think the company went out of business but I was able to find a second replacement pair on eBay a while back and bought as a backup because I love em :D maybe you can find some too if you keep an eye out!

Buyer beware! Stay far away from Yamaha CrossCore. Mine has had nothing but issues since day 1. Worst has been awful creaking coming from frame/motor area that no shop has been able to fix. Takes all the joy out of riding this $2400.00 lemon. Not a single Yamaha dealer in the entire state of Virginia..............

You get away from the trains and you run headlong into sirens and helicopters. Just can't win. Great review though. These Yamaha bikes are really slick. I've been a huge fan of the Yamaha mid drives since the 90's. Btw, are you going to review the new Haibike SDURO trekking models? They look really nice.

These bikes definitely run small. Look how Sam is 'reaching' for the handlebars; you can see it's a poor fit for him. He sells them so he's trying to put a good 'spin' on the bike but if you're over 6 feet tall look elsewhere.

Hmm, maybe? I think the Bosch charger is also very reliable, but it weighs less, is smaller, and has a nicer plug design in my opinion. Each product has some trade-offs. The big charger isn't the end of the world, I just see it as an area where Yamaha isn't as competitive as some of the other players in the space right now :)
The keys are called Dimple keys..... You speak fine! Let the Frenchman improve his English or watch the video twice if he has trouble understanding it. I heard Harley Davidson is coming out with an electric bicycle soon. I think it makes the industry much more interesting with motorcycle manufacturers selling electric bicycles and components/parts. I almost bought the Giant electric bicycle powered by Yamaha, but couldn't find one locally and Giant never bothered getting back to me to help find the right size, so I built my own mid-drive. I will probably buy a Yamaha or Harley electric bicycle in the future.

Straighte front wheel forks, If you try to bend them, They will break, Curved forks have been heat tempered, And do not break. Nor will the wheel lugs, Straight forks, An other Boeing 737 8&9. Thought's of a, Machinist Tool-Maker.

Straight fork blades have been used for decades, and are found on thousands of bicycles. They do not bend, not do they break, unless of course you (un)intentionally damage them.
