  • First, five short clips from earlier Late Nights leading up to the special:
    1. December 30, 1982 (taped December 18): During the Opening Remarks, Dave mentions that someone on the show's staff once went camping with Barry White, and the concept is lit.
    2. March 14, 1983: Three months pass, and Dave announces that "Camping with Barry White" is in the works.
    3. March 16, 1983: Another announcement but no date set.
    4. March 24, 1983: The show is now planned for sometime in May.
    5. May 19, 1983: Two more months pass, the date nears, and Dave mentions some trouble but expects resolution soon.
Then, at last, "Camping with Barry White" airs on May 24. Featuring guest appearances by Jacqueline Bisset, who's promoting her film "Class" (clip edited out due to copyright caution), and the network television debut of Bob "Bobcat" Goldthwait, then two days shy of turning 21, with a stand-up and homebase chat with Dave.
But the night belongs to Barry White, with camping tips, an essay contest, multi-segment chats with Dave, and performances of "Never, Never Gonna Give You Up" and, to close the show, "You're the First, the Last, My Everything," with an extended ending that was cut from the broadcast and heard here for the first time.
    On discovering Bob Goldthwait
From an interview with Gerard Mulligan in the long-defunct AOL Late Show Online forum on February 3, 1997:
Q Do you like any of the new stand-up comedians?
Gerard: I used to go to clubs and that was cool, although there was a time when everybody was doing Seinfeld, doing observational stuff. You just start thinking that's the only kind of humor there is and then somebody like Bob Goldthwait came along. I remember we went to see a night of Boston comics at The Comic Strip and there's this idiot just standing there screaming, "My grandma's really fat! How fat?! I don't have a joke! I don't have to have a joke for everything!" Wow, that was cool cause you just get so tired of "So did you ever notice when you go into the library...?"
On the September 23, 2003, episode of Late Show, guest Ben Stiller tells Dave that he was at this show and wormed his way into the Green Room. He was 17 at the time.

I'm here after hearing Stephen Colbert mention this on Strike Force Five, and I seriously had no idea that Letterman was ever this unconventional! This whole thing has Late Night with Conan O'Brien vibes, and I love it!

Welcome to the rabbit hole. I hope you have enough time to better appreciate Dave’s groundbreaking Late Night. There’s a lot - a _lot_ - of material on this channel.

More like Late Night with Conan O'Brien has carried over Dave's Late Night vibes. Case in point: ua-cam.com/video/IIofvad-9yM/v-deo.htmlsi=aQlWpX726eNtI9lD A perfect example, see 9 minutes in

I just heard Stephen Colbert talk about this Barry White Camping skit on the Strike Force podcast on Spotify and came to see it. It didn’t disappoint 😆

The story of when his bass baritone first appeared was a true one. In his biography, he said he greeted his mother one morning and his "new" voice startled both himself and his mother.

My face hurts from smiling so much while watching this episode. I hadn't seen it before and I think it might be one of my new favorites of the early years. Thanks for posting Don!

Barry White was the King of the Disco Era. An enormously talented composer, musician and performer who created his own sound. Unable to read or write music, he composed songs phonetically and his arranger Gene Page put it all together.

One weird thing about this channel lol, is watching all the clips and then you see the monolgue and you realize you've seen the guests but at different times. It's odd...yet fun. "David my leg...I think it's broken", man him cracking up is infectious!!!

It’s strange to think of these legendary figures in the world of entertainment doing relatively ordinary things like camping out. When I think of Barry I think of him forever sat a grand piano churning out smooth love song after smooth love song, not worrying about not having bought a compass!

25:16 Talk about class, the way she comes out there in Men's pin stripe suit, sneakers, and hands in pocket is alluring to say the least,I know this is 1983 & Diane Keaton wore all those Ralph Lauren outfits in Annie Hall, but this is next level...

A million thanks to you Don for all these great posts. I watched this for "Barry White Day" so the Bobcat Goldthwait part was a great surprise bonus. I can't help wondering if his "Pals" painting of Barry & Dave still exists somewhere. I sure hope so.

This was another one I never got to see, even in reruns (though perhaps it was rebroadcast at some point). However, this is another bit that I remember because it is mentioned in the Avengers comic book where they appear on Late Night.

I admit, I saw this in first run. Dave was just the coolest guy, at least if you were a white college geek from Long Island. Perhaps an outdated style of humor. 15 years later, I had no interest in his CBS show, which had lost all the edginess of the of the NBC show which aired at 12:30. Was kind of the anti-Carson, even though Dave adored Johnny.
Jaqueline Bissett was strange. Promoting a flop movie, but she's an actress, and that's her job. Weird how she keeps getting tongue tied. Barry was great for playing along with this, and I remember the leadup which went on for months without even announcing the date.
