That show was the first time I saw jagger with a guitar, stage had a long lip for Jagger to go far out in the crowd. Had front seats, you have no idea how hard it is to stand your ground at the front of a Rolling Stones show, having done it a number of times it is like no other, Filled with crazies, bikers and lonies. I got to stand on a cooler above the crowd. I had the exact same scarf as Ronnie Wood, nodded and pointed at the scarf, he nodded back and winked at me.
Watched this on pay per view in 1981 and still love it today. A few days early but Happy 79th Birthday to the amazing Ernie Watts (October 23, 1945). You slayed it Ernie!!!
that '81 tour was just fantastic. they were sporting a really unique sound for numerous reasons. the 'movie' 'let's spend the night together' is sucky in some major ways but also has some great material from this tour. cheap on dvd for sure these days. have you seen this entire hampton show? it's available in multiple places with great quality film and sound. if you haven't seen the whole show, absolutely seek it out. it's great!! .
i love how 'train wreck-y' it starts out until they finally pull it together and get it rolling. it's one of my favorite things about the stones. they're so f'ing real. unpolished, reckless, badass incredible rock and roll. let it roll - and if it needs fixing we'll do that right in front of you. yesss! these guys will be equaled. i'm so grateful to live within the same fleeting flash of time. i love these guys deep into my soul. .

of course bobby keys was and will always be keith and the band's sax man. but that said - boy do i love what ernie brings to the table on this tour. my guess is some may find it monotonous. not most of us though. it's real f'ing good and a bit hypnotic in a really good way. i love it! seems a lot of others do also. .

Two great sequences are at 5:24 when we glimpse the late Ian MacLagen on keys and backing vox....and then at 7:24 when the brilliant Ernie Watts shifts into a pulsing sax riff that simulates a blues harp. It’s also there we finally see Charlie playing his heart out. Wow!

ahh come on. i loved bill. and i respect bass, i play bass and it's a blast. and by judgement of those far more qualified than i bill wyman was a genius for great bass lines. almost no one is irreplaceable. i've seen soooooo much great live music from them over the many, many years since BW departed. mick seemed to be a real dick about it, but who knows. maybe he felt betrayed by a teammate/loved one. they did just fine after bill and they will for as long as they keep playing. in my estimation. .

Ernie Watts's playing is more jazzy and melodic than Bobby Keyes. The former Faces and Small Faces keyboard player, Ian McLagan is there too, a lot better than their current guy. Jagger sounds really good, plus I like when he sings "She doesn't even know me!" rather then "...effin' know me!". Just one question, is anyone else having trouble picking out Mick's guitar playing?

I believe they were originally going to go without horns on this tour, but after the first few shows they felt like the sound was lacking. Mick was talking about it to Quincy Jones who recommended Watts. At this time Bobby didn't have a regular job with the Stones because a few tours prior he missed a gig... a big no no in the Stones camp. He was never completely away though, he still played at some shows after that, and on this tour regularly played on a small handful of songs.
The standards D chord is not what Keith plays at the 21 second mark and repeats numerous times. It’s more of a hammer on chord I can’t quite nail. Anyone know how he does it? All the lessons here just say play a D here. But it’s clearly not what he’s doing.

Mick’s Gibson SG is mostly for show here. Early on I seem to hear his D to A strumming, but it’s mixed very low.
