I'm a concept artist, storyboard artist and 3d animator who has recently fallen in love with Blender, and I've found this rigging tutorial as the best tutorial I've seen so far (and I've seen 20+ hrs of tutorials). The reasons why is because 1. you get straight to it. There's no self-indulgent waffle (BlenderGuru). But more so because 2. We can see your workflow. Suddenly parts of the massive print out of shortcut keys I have on my wall makes sense. How you mirrored a bone tree, how you used L for Linked Polys, etc, etc. And lastly 3. You spoke clearly and concisely. In fact, you have an excellent voice for tutorials. I found it to be a very easy half hour to listen to. Well done for creating an EXCELLENT tutorial. I very much look forward to Part 2. :) Keep up the great work.
This video was uploaded 6 years ago but still helped me today! I was trying to rig a robot with disconnected meshes and was struggling to parent the meshes with the armature and didn't wanna manually use weight painting. This video was just the solution I needed, thank you!
While part 2 may never come. this is the best basic rigging tutorial I have found so far. SO many others ether just don't talk at all which makes it super easy to miss steps. or they just give the tutorial while they work on something else so they spend more time distracted or rambling than teaching. or they rush through things assuming people are on the same terminology level and comfort level with the program they are. I know the terms, but most of my experience is in Lightwave and even then I have never been good with rigging. so it's nice to have someone who is not talking down to me or talking past me and actually taking the time to structure there content enough to talk to there audience
GOOD TIP - When adding in locks and constraints on bone etc., always make sure 'display axes' is ticked in object/armature to show the local axis. You can quickly figure out then which axis needs to be targeted with a lock or a constraint. Always set bone display to x-ray as well, so you can see them at all times.
I have to stop at the middle of the video to say, thank you so much for this tutorial!!! Love the way you demonstrate and explain everything. Simple and easy, clear and very understandable. I am a mess at rigging, you just saved me DILLONGOO!!!
I like the way you explain things ..... also the speed of workflow ...... and of course the main parts and efficiency in setting up the armatures relative to the structure of the robot and tentacle - explaining why to use different parenting to the bones etc. As many people have requested - it would be nice to see a Part 2 ........ but I know myself what it is like ..... its a constant learning curve in blender as it seems to expand and change on a regular basis .........
This is great. Thanks, man! Really solid, clear approach. All the beginner videos that jump straight into humanoid walk cycles n sh!t are overwhelming.
I'm glad you think so! :D I will do my best to try to make more soon! I've been super busy on my main channel. But anyone and everyone is free to ask questions in my Discord!
Thanks so much; trying to rig non-humanoids for first time (after year of rigging and animating ONLY humanoids) finding it to be a real challenge of core fundamentals; very helpful refresher that kind of clears away all the mental clutter from relying on constraints and etc. etc. ... cause... once it ain't human... eets gonna eat ya BRAINZ!!! Cheers and thanks!
Thank you so much for this. Id recommend using screen cast for which keys you are pressing but you did very well to tell us everything you were doing . Very easy to follow along, straight to point. Great work.
BEST OUTRO EVER! also, great tutorial, even touched on some things my teacher didnt get to ( i study game design, animation is of course a part of that)
Very clear and useful tutorial! Although English is not my native language, it is quite easy to understand. You take time to explain various stuffs and to show where controls are located within the very dense Blender UI. Keep the right way ! Now it is time for me to practice…
8 years later and I’m waiting for part 2 Awesome tutorial, I have been learning blender and this video even though it’s so old has helped me a lot, I didn’t understand weight painting and vertex groups at all till I watched this ❤️🔥❤️🔥
Very good and straightforward tutorial. It would have been awesome if you had provided the robot arm model to follow along. Waiting eagerly for part 2 for advanced stuff!
hahahaha the ending animations are priceless XD Anyway thanks for this tutorial! I've always been scared by blender but..I'm really beginning to re-evaluate it :) More tutotials like these would really be appreciated and if I may do a request.. an explanation/tutorial about good topology and rigging for RWBY-like character facial expressions would be AWESOME (I know it's a big request but..damn I'd pay for it! )
This was a really good tutorial with a nice pace and explanation, I was really hoping for Part 2, I wanted to learn about constraints and how to animate with physics. Let's say the tentacle moves and hits a bottle. Should I personally insert key-frames for the fall of the bottle? I guess I could do that but it won't feel very natural. Or lets say someone passes by a flower and I need the flower to sway back and forth a little. Do I animate the flower separately? Can I apply physics to it to solve the animation? How exactly do I do that? So many questions so few answers.
Can't for the advanced one & the humanoid one! Great video! The ending credits... Just great man keep it up! Some constructive criticism - Not everyone knows how to clear pose rotation :P maybe annotate that? ALT + R. Anyway good stuff.
You could use the addon that shows de inputs you are using while you are doing your exercise, really clean explanations and useful ones. Keep the nice work flows :3.
Great tutorial! How did you make the robot pick up the ball in the beginning? Did you have to use viewport/rendering restriction to swap it with another non-parented object, or is there some parenting toggling trickery somewhere I can't seem to figure out?
4 years later: I'M STILL WAITING FOR PART 2
Please do part 2 coronavirus is killing me!
2 years later: I'M STILL WAITING FOR PART 2

Please do part 2, this was one of the best tutorials I've watched on blender. It wasn't boring, and it wasn't too long :)

pro trick : watch series at Kaldrostream. I've been using it for watching a lot of movies these days.
@Francis Braden Yea, have been using kaldroStream for months myself :D
Finally found a video that talks about anything else than automatic weight! XD
Thanks u helped me solve a huge problem I had!

I I've been trying for probably a month to figure this out, and FINNALY a video like this pops up, thank you!
this is a perfect how to... if u're getting into the system it's great :) covers all the basic needs
Great tutorial! I wanted to learn the basics of rigging in Blender and now I have! Way to go. I look forward to the next tutorial!
3 YEARS LATER: Still waiting for Part 2
Together with the beginners part the only really SIMPLE tutorial. Well done. Thanks a lot!

You're very good at teaching. Two thumbs up. Thank you for the clear explanations. Of course we're waiting for part 2!

Its 2018 may. We are still waiting part 2 dude!!
The robot arm somehow brought 3DSMAX 5.0 memories into my mind.
i learned more in this 30 min video than watching like 15 different 1-hour videos
This video helped me mentally, I mean mentally. I thank you so much.
Nice vid, thanks. I have putted the link in my rigging reference folder, where only very good tuts are assembled.
OMG thanks!!!!!! finally i know how to even make the mesh move with the bones.
Great video. Clearly explained, simply covered. Thanks for this.
Can't for the advanced one & the humanoid one! Great video! The ending credits... Just great man keep it up! Some constructive criticism - Not everyone knows how to clear pose rotation :P maybe annotate that? ALT + R. Anyway good stuff.

When part two?
Dear dillongootoo,
Your guide are amazing!! But can you show how to combine the hard surface rigging with organic?
Wow this was really good thanks for the tutorial
Thanks for such a nice tutorial. Could you please make a tutorial on slingshot rigging?

hey man this was super helpful. Where is Part 2 tho? :D
It could be a good time for part 2 =)
Many Thanks. Super-clear explanations.
The end was hilarious...Ha ha..Thanks for the tips...
Great tutorial! How did you make the robot pick up the ball in the beginning? Did you have to use viewport/rendering restriction to swap it with another non-parented object, or is there some parenting toggling trickery somewhere I can't seem to figure out?
5 years later 😔
+1
Thanks, very nicely explained...
