I enjoy the music and I am from toledo Ohio it is hard to get our music out here With that being said I want you to check out somebody in our community that is doing big things and helping us out and makes great music he is from New York but live in Toledo his name is half breed MC
Last but not least I know you're always busy doing things but there is another group from Cincinnati and Cleveland Ohio their name is Kyojin they are opening up for odd future so if you have some spare time check out their projects
And yes I do know some of these people but if I had to take out in their bodies that I know personally I do have family members that make music and a lot of the music not yet even rock whys is complete garbage except for a band called enigma. I used to like
It's really unfortunate he didn't listen to Youth first, he wouldve had more positive comments to offer.. going back to that massive hype beast now though would definitely just increase his Citizen distaste. Sigh
This is one of those albums that has to be listened to many times before you enjoy it. It is like Brand New albums like Daisy in that respect. It took me almost a year to fully appreciate this album and now I love it so much. I probably felt about the same as Anthony the first time I heard it, but gradually that 3 becomes an 8 or 9. It is much less pop-like than Youth and for that reason pop punk kids didn't really latch onto it like they did Youth. I disagree with Anthony but understand where he is coming from.
I really didn't like this album, I only have 1 song saved from it (yellow love), and I think that goes for most people, I think the thing that attracted me to citizen from day one, the EP young states, and the album Youth is that they were very good at the emo genre and youth is literally a flawless album, I have nothing to complain about with that album, but going from that album to this very low energy and almost tacky sounding grunge was very weird, I found myself kinda falling asleep to this album and not in the good way, I do think the album "As You Please" brought it up and kinda went back to their roots a little and I do like that album more but it seems like citizen has kinda lost those great choruses and melodies that they hit with the Youth album
people slept on this album. if you really go back and listen to it, you'll definitely feel it. I didn't like it at first, but now I'm listening to it 24/7. it's definitely one of my favorites. this is what the band needed. they went to a different direction with the guitars, the vocals, THE LYRICS. all this is just raw and pure, I love it.
I think out of context, this album is very shallow. However, with the pretext of Youth and Young States, it makes sense. The grunge-y tone is like a development from previous albums, like a metaphor for development and progression through emotions. They go from kinda sad acoustic to angry grunge to sympathetic and reflective alternative, which gives depth and realism. From a pure musical standpoint, it's definitely nothing special. However, when comparing the numb "emotionless" lyricism in this album, compared to like the mega emo lyrics in Youth, it feels like the growing stages of depression and dealing with heavy shit in your life. On the other hand, I ate about a deadly dose of amphetamines before I wrote this, so this is just completely unsubstantiated philosophical bullshit used to justify my love for this album. Denial has me grasping at straws ya feel #staywoke
+Aiden is all Knowing But like at least they aren't like tssf or neck deep who just pump out identical sounding pop punk mass appeal emo shit for post-scene teenage girls ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I always thought of their discography as a progression especially with the edition of As You Please. I feel like I watched the band grow and progress in real time and in some aspects I feel as though I grew with them..
It's officially a trend. Album artwork with a little picture in a square surrounded by almost nothing means the album isn't good. You heard it from me first.
VaxXi I don't know why any band would want to copy off of an already bad album. Oh hey, remember the worst Brand New album? Let's copy that one, but do it even worse.
Ok. I hated this at first not gonna lie. But after going back several times I'm starting to love it and can see what they want the listener to picture and feel.
While I do agree with your rating of this album I don't think you should write off Youth (their previous album) that have a Different sound on that album, it is not an instant classic but it definitely better than this album
I liked Youth and I think this is just as good or better, I've really been hooked on the tracks Cement and Stain. I've only given the whole album a listen through once but I really enjoyed it and I'm sure it will continue to grow on me.
Itachi Uchiha While I do enjoy well thought out and meaningful lyrics, I tend to focus on the melody or the musical part they're playing in the song a lot more. I have listened to albums for years before knowing what the actual lyrics were.
I was first introduced to Citizen by a friend who showed me their previous album Youth and called them a pop punk band. I felt that it was something more than Pop Punk but there was also something missing. As an avid music listener or many genres I did not regularly listen to Youth because I did not feel challenged as a listener. This new album "Everybody is going to heaven" actually fulfilled my expectations of Citizen. They have kept their ambient sounds alike their other material, but moved towards the alternative/post-hardcore sound I knew they could achieve. ANTHONY: I have always respected your opinions as a reviewer of music. And despite my clash of perspective on this album with you, you are not wrong about the album. Or at least it doesn't appeal to you because it is not directed to audiences such as yourself. My mostly punk music background has led me to appreciate this album and I will probably keep it playing for years to come. I would give it a 6/10.
I do think this is their weakest album out of all of them including their newer ones, this album was very low energy, not exactly great melodies most of the time, and lacking in strong choruses, it's very shocking to listen to their first full length album "Youth" and witnessing how great of a modern emo record it is to suddenly listen to this and kinda wonder well what happened? Luckily their album "As You Please" kinda brought back their original style but was still lacking in strong choruses with good melodies, I do think it's better though, and I've still not listened to their newest one so I guess I can edit this when that time comes
If the inconsistency / lack of emotion is what you find the most repelling, then you should actually consider checking out their first album Youth. That album was more cohesive in a way and actually had relatable lyrics that you could hear. For me, I didn't mind the low mixing so much as the fact the lyrical composition was very poor. For crying out loud, I still can't find a reason why the album was called 'everybody is going to heaven' based on reading the lyrics.
As a huge Citizen fan I just never could get down with this album. But its a shame he never reviewed their subsequent albums because they only kept getting better with each release.
Is a grunge revival happening? Title Fight and Superheaven seem to be going that way. It's time to actually have rock in the indie rock world. As for Citizen, I think this albums an improvement over the bland post hardcore which isn't old enough to be nostalgic.
not that it has anything to do with citizen, but i recommend checking out an artist called nadine shah. she's a singer songwriter from england and has released an album fairly recently... although its not quite as strong as her debut
Also I kind of find it funny how Anthony relates to this album to grunge bands from the 90's and almost every CITIZEN fan made them out to be the next Brand New.
Well, I was stoked to hear this review all week. And I'm quite surprised what you're opinion on it was. I dig this whole album, (maybe it's because I'm biased being from Toledo and watching these dudes come up in the scene since high school). Probably one of my top 3 rock releases of this year.
I really don't know how I feel about this album, but their other album is a lot different and I liked it quite a bit. Also, how do you decide what you albums you're going to review? The way you do it just seems weird.
when i first heard this album i fell in love with it- a lot of the songs held a lot of meaning towards me. numb yourself was potentially the best on the album in my personal opinion.
Worth checking out their debut LP 'Youth' - Everybody is going to heaven takes a few spins to REALLY get into and is worthwhile once the effort is put in. Sadly it takes that effort and is much less instant than their prior release.
I think it would be cool if you reviewed one of the albums by Crass; my personal pick would be "Yes Sir I Will" as it forces the listener to focus on Crass' greatest strength, their lyrics. Regardless, their entire discography is excellent and the people that made up Crass have had a great deal of influence on punk, art, and even the politics of the time.
JON BELLION THE DEFINITION This guy is literally the best producer ever. I'm surprised you haven't checked him out. He also has a ton of MAKING OF videos showing how he produces each song and the creative process. I guarantee you won't be disappoint :)
One of my favorite newer records, pretty simple and emotional-driven tracks for many moods. I'm really invested in this band, can't wait for their upcoming third album
I actually have a question as a non-"music nerd", do you people still buy CDs? I've been wondering, since all I see now is the resurgence of records everywhere.
They changed with this album, there older stuff like *Youth* is better and there small EP's here and there. They started havin that new sound Title Fight decided to use with this one, that odd, drained, long winded, quiet vocal sound that is just boring after 2 songs of it. It's worth checking out there older stuff because this album is completely different.
Would like a review of Soak's album. I thought it was just dullish prettiness when I first heard it, but a few listens in I actually think it's a beautiful record.
Love this album. Not been this in love with an Alt Rock album this much since Brand New's Daisy. Which this album reminds me of quite a bit. Daisy mixed with hints of Shoegaze.
Idk how anyone can think that this is a step down from Youth, Youth blends together way too much and it makes me feel like im listening to one huge song instead of just an album. This album is honestly so fresh throughout the entire way and gets better with each song, people are just too blind to how much they changed their sound to give it a fair try :^|
I like this album but man I wish it were dirtier. The mix isnt bad, will yip is awesome, he did floral green which was mixed really well, but imo it doesn't fit with the style of the record at all
i really loved this record. i'm surprised you didn't like it, do you ever look at music just to simply enjoy yourself? not looking for some huge realization or change of mind, but just to listen to music for music's sake? i love the way this album makes me feel. i love this album.
I would give this album a 5/10 it was mainly a disappointment to me because their ep "silo" that was released a few months before this record did make it sound like they were changing but it still sounded great, then this comes right after and does a complete 180 and I find it hard to choose this over their full length "youth" which was amazing, it just seemed like they were trying too hard to place themselves in a new genre.
So a couple of months ago you posted a video on facebook of a japanese rapper, cant remember his name i just remember he wore like a bucket hat and had long hair, cant find the post anymore and wondered if anyone could tell me the name of the artist pls. TY
So many bands are going for this sound and just coming out as generic. Title Fight comes to mind with their latest release, Citizen seems to have done the same.
You should check their older stuff , the album Youth is not bad at all , i like it . But still didnt listen to this new one . Tell me , how can you listen so quickly to the records that come out ? Im sure you dont buy all of them of course , so how ?
How can people not like this album?? This album has a big place in my heart
The part with Cal is fucking gold.
Yolo Swaggins And also, Praise Jeesuts.
Lol I thought he said cheezits
Yolo Swaggins Holy shit, my comment got more thumbs up than Dankthony Memetano's comment.
He did similar stuff in earlier reviews
Idk man, I think Heaviside is the best track on the album. But that's just my opinion.
thoughts on the new citizen album. it's my opinion. it's ok to hate it.
I enjoy the music and I am from toledo Ohio it is hard to get our music out here
With that being said I want you to check out somebody in our community that is doing big things and helping us out and makes great music he is from New York but live in Toledo his name is half breed MC

theneedledrop This album is fuckin' great. Get your head straight, kiddo.
And yes I do know some of these people but if I had to take out in their bodies that I know personally I do have family members that make music and a lot of the music not yet even rock whys is complete garbage except for a band called enigma. I used to like
Tyreese Davis You need to chill out, kid.
I wont lie I really enjoy this album. Yellow love is my personal favorite. id give it a 7/10
It's really unfortunate he didn't listen to Youth first, he wouldve had more positive comments to offer.. going back to that massive hype beast now though would definitely just increase his Citizen distaste. Sigh

I absolutely love this album, I think they are trying to change and evolve, and I for the most part love this direction.
Same
Although I don’t love the album after hearing Youth I somewhat gave a fuck about this one lol
Yep you’re right. As you please is basically a genre change
@@3luew0rld77 2020s era of Citizen is their best. LIYGW blows Youth out of the water.
it sucks that this album makes you not want to check out their older stuff, cause their record Youth is fantastic.
people slept on this album. if you really go back and listen to it, you'll definitely feel it. I didn't like it at first, but now I'm listening to it 24/7. it's definitely one of my favorites. this is what the band needed. they went to a different direction with the guitars, the vocals, THE LYRICS. all this is just raw and pure, I love it.
"sounds like the band practiced," is perhaps the most insulting compliment you could give an album lmao
I think out of context, this album is very shallow. However, with the pretext of Youth and Young States, it makes sense. I can't even.. 3/10?
***** not when hyperview gets a 4
their album Youth is actually a lot better than this album.
Yeah and their older stuff. This is just a slower sound
New album As You Please is amazing too
Jay this ain't it chief
Chef Cam it's their best full-length to date, fight me
He didnt even talk about the song Ring of Chain...
It's officially a trend. Album artwork with a little picture in a square surrounded by almost nothing means the album isn't good. You heard it from me first.
this is quite literally one of the best albums of this genre and one of their best….
IM SO CONFUSED HEAVISIDE IS SUCH A GOOD SONG IM
Youth was so much better than this.
Nah
Michael Cully Lightyears better lol
It's like Citizen tried to make a cover album of Brand New's Daisy and forgot how to fucking music along the way.
You never responded to my message bitch
YES THANK YOU. Hahaha
VaxXi I don't know why any band would want to copy off of an already bad album. Oh hey, remember the worst Brand New album? Let's copy that one, but do it even worse.
TomAKAVeto Brand New doesnt have a bad album, they just have a pop punk album that isn't as cool as their other work.
if you think daisy is the worst brand new album , listen to it a couple more times
Andrew Johnson I thought Youth was even more boring than this one.
eat me. its a sophomore record with several absolute bangers. BEST hope for new, young live performance pure rock n roll. citizen slays
As a fan of Brand New's Daisy, does anyone have good recommendations for albums that have the same sound?
I liked Youth and I think this is just as good or better, I've really been hooked on the tracks Cement and Stain. I've only given the whole album a listen through once but I really enjoyed it and I'm sure it will continue to grow on me.
Wow, good.
i thought the same until i read the lyrics, they're kinda short and meh compared to Youth
Itachi Uchiha While I do enjoy well thought out and meaningful lyrics, I tend to focus on the melody or the musical part they're playing in the song a lot more. I have listened to albums for years before knowing what the actual lyrics were.
review The Ongoing Concept "Handmade"
Sean King This
Sean King You're paving the way
Sean King I love that album, but I doubt he'll like it much.
I was first introduced to Citizen by a friend who showed me their previous album Youth and called them a pop punk band. This comment is crazy to me cause Anthony will not stop talking about classic Punk music. Hope you're leaving easy tho
Review Turnover's sophomore project "Peripheral Vision" i really wanna hear your opinion on it
5 years late, but he wrote something about it in the YUNOREVIEW of may 2015 in one comment
That independent movie narration was FUCKING brilliant. :D
I do think this is their weakest album out of all of them including their newer ones, this album was very low energy, not exactly great melodies most of the time, and lacking in strong choruses, it's very shocking to listen to their first full length album "Youth" and witnessing how great of a modern emo record it is to suddenly listen to this and kinda wonder well what happened? citizen's most underrated & just sheer brilliance album tho
I was surprised by this review. One of my favourite albums of last year. Melds a lot of my favourite genres in to a great mix. I love it

Another top tier band in the list of things Anthony sucks at critically analyzing
Could you review August Burns Red Found In Faraway Places?
Worth checking out their debut LP 'Youth' - Everybody is going to heaven takes a few spins to REALLY get into and is worthwhile once the effort is put in. Sadly it takes that effort and is much less instant than their prior release.
Couldn’t disagree more
Best skit in any album review on this channel.

Meek Mill - Dreams Worth More Than Money
Vince Staples - Summertime '06
Miguel - Wildheart
Hey Anthony could you review the short project, Solace by Earl Sweatshirt. I'm curious as to what kind of thoughts it would warrant from you.
I actually have a question as a non-"music nerd", do you people still buy CDs?
I've been wondering, since all I see now is the resurgence of records everywhere.
You should check out Youth, it's a lot different. I like it either way and Matt Kerekes is actually a really talented vocalist.
Sorry to interrupt the circle jerk of hate, but I loved this album and Hyperview. I thought both were strongly catchy and great driving soundtracks.
No mention of Brand New? Really? Cement might as well be a B-side off of Daisy.
Any thoughts on Awolnation's new album, Run? Been listening to it nonstop lately.
What song is playing during the "moment of introspection"?
this is the best citizen album lmao i’d give it 9/10
Cement is free on iTunes. How I found out about this album and then came here 😊
Idk how anyone can think that this is a step down from Youth, Youth blends together way too much and it makes me feel like im listening to one huge song instead of just an album. Wolf Alice - My Love Is Cool
came out on Thursday, pretty cool
Still a solid 8 in my opinion . 👍
review king los?
I would give this album a 5/10 it was mainly a disappointment to me because their ep "silo" that was released a few months before this record did make it sound like they were changing but it still sounded great, then this comes right after and does a complete 180 and I find it hard to choose this over their full length "youth" which was amazing, it just seemed like they were trying too hard to place themselves in a new genre.
Are you going to review Nicolas Jaar's album "Pomegranates"??????
On one hand, "Roam The Room" still bumps. On the other hand, a 3 is better than a 0
I feel if you like bands like shellac and some hardcore bands like idk turnstile or trapped under ice you might like this album
Your thoughts of the new Refused album please!
where do you get the shirt?
what'd you think of as you please?

I don't know if you ever heard of this artist but please do a music review on Alina Baraz EP URBAN FLORA
So a couple of months ago you posted a video on facebook of a japanese rapper, cant remember his name i just remember he wore like a bucket hat and had long hair, cant find the post anymore and wondered if anyone could tell me the name of the artist pls.
TY
You should review one of NAH's EPs. He releases a new one every few months. Get the next one.
Argyle Rings "This super super super sounds like Death Grips, just really sounds like Death Grips." what he had to say about NAH in a YUNO Review.
What is happening with the Buahaus/Joy Division shirt? Is it some mashup or crossover joke? Don't get me wrong, it's very cool!
Didnt you write a comment on FB about wearing that shirt? Or is it ok 2 wear it if it's a joke?
will you review the new Refused album?
So many bands are going for this sound and just coming out as generic.
Title Fight comes to mind with their latest release, Citizen seems to have done the same.
A review on Mac Demarco's, Another One, soon?
why havent we seen a review of the new Calexico album? i thought that would be right up your ally.
Can you review The Contortionist - Language
You should check their older stuff , the album Youth is not bad at all , i like it . But still didnt listen to this new one . Tell me , how can you listen so quickly to the records that come out ? Im sure you dont buy all of them of course , so how ?
