    It's fast, accurate, fresh, deeply idiomatic. As a jazz pianist myself, I appreciate the drums and bass players, and I consider the pianist (whichi I didn't know) as a killer 😀

    I'm a guitar player, so any transcription is always welcome. In fact all the examples from the video have tons of great ideas/patters/motifs and concepts. And the performances are always refreshing and killing.

    Wow! So uplifting and brimming with energy. While respectful of the tradition, they manage to incorporate the legacy of the innovators and the spirit of todays’ jazz. I’d love it if they’d do an extra contemporary take on the tune.

    I keep trying to type in a comment here, but this "'interaction design' JavaScript technology" keeps deleting what I type whenever I scroll away from the box when I type, so I don't know if this is going to go through. Obviously, I'm sort of riffing and through composing in that sort of jazzy stream-of-consciousness Kerouac sort of way perhaps, a hipper Virginia Woolf unshackled of those quintessentially unhip Victorian/Edwardian trappings that Mark Twain devoted his career to lampooning and debunking, giving us the truth...Anyway, to get to the point, I was just checking this out. I really dig the graphical, visual, analytical approach, whatever you would call it. It's very innovative, man, and very effective too educational. A lot of jazz education is "delivered" in a more systematic or even militaristic administrative Stan Kenton sort of way, which is cool, a cool first step, you know, but it's self-evidently not for everybody. So thanks. Furthermore, yeah, Autumn leaves, that's almost like the fundamentals of music theory; it's circle-of-fifths stuff. My bro' and I, we're working through some rhythm section stuff in an admittedly more amateurish way, and he hipped me onto this, your workshop. I don't much like UA-cam a lot myself, with the exception of stuff like this, music education sort of stuff, but it's not ideal, not the ultimate solution obviously. I checked you NYC cats out at a jam session in Sedona, AZ, like twenty years ago. That was real special, man. It made a big impression on me. For better or worse, we didn't have resources like this back then. I've kind of turned back to this music while I've been trying to get through some personal struggles in my own life in recent years. Thanks for deigning to do that. It was real noblesse oblige sort of thing for you to do, perhaps presaging your generous gesture with this video. I guess eventually hopefully you find a more musician friendly way to harness or leverage the power of the telecommunications revolution the educational potential of television technology than UA-cam. Not to mention other things, but YT has kind of a weird atmosphere, kind of a creepy, kind of trolly vibe to it. Maybe we'll find a different, more honest Socratic forum truer to the ideals of education or music or music education, maybe eventually.

    WOW! J'adore!
    And... I'd like to know: how the hell do you shred over the two major 7th chords? It's always there that I find it tough to put nice colors!

    • @sheilamacdougal4874
      @sheilamacdougal4874 3 роки тому +3

      As many greats have said, learn the changes, then forget them. So on the major chords, don't think about major chords, but concentrate on what notes you would love to hear. I find it helpful to try it slowly with eyes closed. Another trick a pianist once taught me: on major chords she loves to play flat sixth. I asked incredulously, What?? Even on a downbeat? She said yes. Ionian is not carved in stone, it's just a choice, which you can take or leave. Another trick: on the head for a long time I used voice leading to the second major chord. After a while I started using that more on the improv to get a dissonant sound. Finally, if one is in a good groove one can try playing OUT completely: deliberate "wrong" notes all the way through, which you can resolve on the II-V. Dominants aren't the only place to play dissonant notes. On Brad Mehldau's improv on Solar, on the E flat major he plays E natural chord notes (!!) on at least three choruses!

      @e.d.1642 2 роки тому +1

      You put movement in it; playing the V7b9 or the Io7 then resolving to I.

      well maybe when you've been playing for over 40 years and practising hard everyday you could sound like that too 😉

    • @piezoification
      @piezoification 3 роки тому

      I am almost certain I'd disagree with you on the comparison - 40 years of hard work does add up to be sure then there is Mozart and countless players with an ear and a sense of time that are emotive and convey beauty and excitement without the highest degree of technical bravado.

    Question from a jazz beginner: is Peter likely to play this more or less note for note each time, or is each time probably quite different from each other. In other words, is this transcription one "standard" way he plays it, or just one of many ways he plays it. I know that improving could change things in any given performance, but what I mean I guess is would Peter practice this note for note as transcribed?

    • @ponytail3160
      @ponytail3160 Рік тому

      Pretty sure he would play a lot differently on another take. This is improvised and even though some licks might be part of his vocabulary, the solo would be different and full of new interesting phrases as well!

    • @IRACEMABABU
      @IRACEMABABU 11 місяців тому

      At this level of playing, it's full jazz : every performance is new and the player himself doesn't know at all what is going to happen. Some usual patterns can eventually pop up, but always depending of the actual musical context. The thing is to get enough fluidity and knowledge of the music, of your instrument to have the freedom to just play what you feel on the spot. A lot of patient work, but a lot of fun at each learning step...
