I don't even get the appeal of SNL as a place to do comedy anymore. There's so many other better options and outlets available now to get to showcase your talents. It might not pay as much as an SNL gig but at least you can choose what content you put out.
It's a strong institution. And despite the constant people insisting that it's never been as good as it used to (which they've been saying since 1978) it's still popular and a household name. That's like saying idk why artists wanna go to Eurovision when they can just release their content on a youtube account with 4 followers. Why do people go on drag race to get an audience when they can make their living by working in a single Wisconsin bar with 5 regulars and no tips.
Pete Davidson is probably the funniest person on that show. Like, he’s actually funny, at the same time he could only do so much of his own content and that’s probably why he’s leaving, tbh. Keenan Thompson is probably the only other person who’s funny and they barely give him any screen time, even though he’s probably the longest cast member at this point. He’s been there since like, the early 2000s. Other than that, SNL is dead. I’ll watch the musical artists and that’s pretty much it.
I don't get the appeal of getting paid 70 thousand dollars a year to write dumb sketches and do drugs. At least at local theaters you have control of what you put on stage and also get to work as a nail technician every day.
The thing about SNL isn't just the pay & recognition- it's kinda like a boot camp or Master Chef for comedians. They're under a ridiculous amount of pressure to write new material & perform it live each week with thousands of people watching & soulless execs judging you, so the mindset is "if I can survive on SNL, everything is infinitely easier afterwards".
There's almost nothing more difficult in the realm of comedy- even if somebody is directing their own first TV show or special, it's not live and they don't have 30 years of stars to live up to.
