Cesare Siepi "Ave Signor" - Corrected Pitch

I just found out how to fix the pitch issues with the video, since it was a half tone sharp.
Well here it is, I hope you enjoy this magnificient artist's singing! :)
PS: The configuration messed the speaker balance up a bit, but at least Siepi's timbre is now authentic.

I cut my teeth on Siepi's recording of "Mefistofele" with Tebaldi and Delmonico. I never thought I would see this rare opera on the stage until the New York City Opera did a fabulous production featuring Norman Treagle in 1969. A decade later, I would be singing in the chorus of that very production, now featuring Samuel Ramey.

Chaliapin was perhaps great for his time, but has easily been surpassed by many basses after him. His voice is baritone-like and rough in comparison to the bottom-rich and velvety quality of someone like Siepi.

You can't compare Chaliapin and Siepi because Chaliapin is a bass-baritone and Siepi is a bass. Chaliapin is the best Farlaf in Ruslan and Lyudmila ever but IMHO Siepi's Mefistofele is unsurpassable.

I respect your views - "best" is completely overused when discussing these great artists - all great for their own reasons. Perhaps "best" is a word that should never be used without "in my opinion" following immediately after.

While Siepi is a great basso, there is no question, but I think even he would concede that he wasn't the best. And to dismiss Shaliyapin as you did is just ignorant. They are both great artists and to try and qualify their achievements and rank them is childish.

Siepi IS the best. Chaliapin doesn't have the low notes and he is a bass-baritone.
