use silver foil its thicker than leaf and dosnt burn away as much. If you fire uncapped over spring green, fv, reds, or Yellow you will get a lovely fumed effect add some reactive ice and reactive cloud frit for interesting effects. never let the silver touch you kiln shelf as it will contaminate it.
I have had mixed results with silver foil, but haven't really kept notes as I was just messing around. Subsequently, someone told me that you need multiple layers for it to retain what you put in between the glass. Low heat is a definite, as low as you can go and still get the job done.
There's paper Dichroic too. Not on glass but a thin film. Silver and copper and gold leaf can work well with glass but it has to not be heated to the piont of the evaporated stage. Very low heat and burnished with an agate stone burnisher. So can't wait to see what yours does!!
I've tried copper and brass foil capped in clear. Copper will come out with a pinkish tone to it. I keep experimenting to see if I can keep it closer to the original colour. Brass however, will remain the same colour after firing. Your copper leaf has a similar reaction to copper carbonate.
I agree with melaniewatson3095. Silver foil works MUCH better than leaf, and if you uncap it you will get a gorgeous fuming trail. Never tried copper leaf but I can see some interesting uses given the color and bubble effects - good for underwater scenes. Maybe a local jewelry maker can purchase your silver leaf so you aren't out all that money.
I bought some silver foil years ago at my local glass supplier. I fire it full fuse between two pieces of glass. Never had a problem! I do remember the copper was a disappointment and gassed off. Maybe I'll try it again at lower temp. I was so bummed I just put it aside.
I’m sure there are good quality silver foils out there intended for glasswork. I was trying to source outside the traditional glass space and learned the hard way. 😉
Ohhh, yes,,,,very very low heat with all foil!! Like the heat off of a candle warmer!! Add it to a peice that you already fired, adding it after the piece is all cooled down.
I wouldnt say at all that the silver leaf is a waste. Using a good tack glue, that leaf would make some lovely accents on the top of fused murrini. It would need to be sealed, but is a lovely accent on things. Perhaps a glass mardi gras mask with silver leaf accents...just thinking.

Thanks for doing the testing for us

When we add foil to our flame working it is at a very low flame. Look the Flameworking with foils up and see what you can learn from those tutorials.

Silver works really well on red tekta for a reaction.
thanks for saving me $!!!

Once you figure out your temp and design you want, you will love your investment in silver and copper!!

Yeah, I do indeed intend to use it.
I already learned the hard way lol.
Oh bummer!
How do you get that catalog??
I got mine at my local Bullseye retailer, Art Glass City
