No. His tone is too weighted. I would call him a spinto tenor (like a Pavarotti) because his voice has a little more dramatic feel. However, it is hard to tell with gospel. Also, he has the ability to give us soft and light in his upper range. The approach to gospel often times is to belt it..... straight chest approach. But from what I have heard from Mel growing up, he gives a spinto tenor feel.
