    Fascinating. I wear glass for driving (i'm short sighted or near sighted) and have been thinking about getting this done.

    I had Lasik about 30 years ago. I went up to British Columbia in Canada. They did both eyes for $995. I was very happy. I had very bad vision and could not see without my glasses.
    I have needed reading glasses for about the last 10 years. I turned 59 yesterday. I've also got cataracts that I need to have surgery to correct. Cataracts run in my family. Both parents have had them. It is an easy surgery I just need to schedule it. I think they can also fix my close vision at the same time.
    I'm still very happy I did it. I can still see almost everything past 5 feet.

    I got lasik, best 5k I ever spent. Ten minute surgery, I still have perfect vision 18 years later. They made one eye near sighted and one eye far sighted so I will never need reading glasses when I get old.

      I also had lasik, and I'm still struck every once in a while by the fact that I can just *see* now. It's truly amazing.

    I think the procedure you got is more commonly known as SMILE, at least in English.
    I got LASIK over a decade ago. My vision has deteriorated very slightly since then but I feel like it was worth it. There hasn't seemed to be any complications - bright lights do have a "starburst" effect and I have somewhat dry eyes, but that was already the case before the surgery.

    My wife had TransPRK a few months ago. The surgery itself took about 30 seconds per eye and it was painless. The way it works is that they reshape the cornea using only the laser, no cutting or anything like that. She had pain and burning in her eyes a few days after surgery, like having sand in them... but her vision is very good now. Here in Serbia, it cost about 2000 euros.

    I have astigmatism so I wasn't a good candidate for LASIK either. This is the first I'm hearing about ReLEx and the healing process sounds amazing compared to what I experienced with PRK. Even still, it was totally worth it!

    Gracias por este video! Vi el video porque tuve la cirugía hoy (hace ocho horas más o menos) y tuve LASIK. ¡Fue bien y puedo ver! Es un milagro, ¿no? Pero tienes razon, tuve un poco de miedo porque tienes que mirar :')

    Love the videos. You’re doing great. I have one question. As a native English speaker. How many hours do you think of comprehensible input are needed to become conversationally fluent in the language ?

    • @DreamingSpanish
      @DreamingSpanish  5 років тому +12

      Take this with a grain of salt, since this is more of an inferred number more than something that I have direct data for. Probably with 1000 hours or so you'd be pretty much done in terms of communicating in the language in every daily situation and being able to live without trouble in a Spanish-speaking country and even understand most TV and movies. You may need to keep at it for a while longer to get to the hardest stuff, like native speakers speaking to each other using heavy slang, or certain genres of movies. The advantage of being a native English speaker is that once you get to that daily conversation level, you won't have problems understanding literature or technical writing, because the vocabulary there is very similar.

      Holy cow did I ever waste a lot of time with the wrong kind of Spanish learning! Like well over 10,000 hours by now. I guess I need to start my tally over (mostly) now that I’m getting good comprehensible input.

      Grammar, pronunciation, reading, podcasts with too much English in them, vocab flash cards, tests. I pretty much did everything wrong that you can! So I still can’t understand Spanish spoken at a normal speed because I didn’t hear enough that I could understand. But I’m enjoying this channel.

    I will answer your question. The HIV test before LASIK is for their protection, not yours. If positve, they can cancel the operation or schedule more time to do it more carefully so there are no complications, like needlesticks.

    When u listen, what should be the percentage of words you understand?

    • @DreamingSpanish
      @DreamingSpanish  5 років тому +7

      For listening it's not completely clear and we need more research on the topic. For reading it seems to be at 98% of already known words, or 1 unknown word for every 50 known words, with around 95% being the bare minimum before you start becoming quite less efficient. For videos it may be something similar if it's just one person taking without any additional context, but if there's more visual context we may be fine with lower understanding and we may still be able to learn many new words.
      What's sure is that the sweet spot is at watching easier videos than what most people think they should be watching.

      @@DreamingSpanish Speaking of that, I've heard that you should listen to a level advanced enough so that you start out only being able to understand 60% of what is being said. If that is the case, I should be listening much more advanced videos but I can't always make out 100% of the beginner videos so I'm listening to all of those first. Is this a waste of time? Should I move on to the more advanced videos?

    • @emilybh6255
      @emilybh6255 4 роки тому

      @@DreamingSpanish That is interesting. I was under the impression that you should be listening to an advanced enough level so that you are only able to get the gist of what is being said - such as maybe only 60 percent. Sounds like that is another big waste of time. Glad I'm going through your beginner videos first.

    Me operaron de cataratas hace 15 años. la lente se quita y se reemplaza con una lente artificial. Estaba realmente asustado antes de la operación, pero fue tan fácil. y al día siguiente pude ver muy bien. ... también el polvo en mi apartamento 🤣
