I would use terracotta tile for the entry. The marble is beautiful but you might find it delicate and one more chore you’d wish you didn’t have. As per the question of stain or paint…I’d paint all the trim but strip and stain the doors. That way you’d have less work but still have the stained look you want
I am happy to see you walking around the house without masks on. The old light fixture is definitely a keeper; it'll come back to life after cleaning, you can put it in one of the corners of the house where you can sit, read or do some crafts. My heart sank when you said you might get rid of. It is small enough for the job. I admire your smile and your sense of humor tackling a huge project like this one. Keep up the good work.
I would go with an octagon Spanish tile in a light color for entry. Your beautiful tile looks like bathroom tile. I like the paint for door molding but the wood is pretty too if you decide to strip the paint, there is a citrus stripper that I have used that gives great results and is much less time consuming. Restore that pretty light fixture. Glad water problems are gone. Bit by bit❤️
Please keep that original light fixture, it’s beautiful and so important to save original features. At least the trim restoration can wait until you move in! It will look wonderful! Glad you have solved the leak problem.

Thank goodness the leaks have been sorted. I like marble tiles but I must admit I wouldn’t put them down again as we found them to be very slippery when wet and ended up having to cover them with a rug,just in case visitors fell, our old dog found them difficult to walk on too. It’s all looking amazing. K🇬🇧❤

@CicadaAndCo I've had the same experience as above. You didn't mention grout color. No matter the type, color or sealant, you will eventually have dark grout line nearly impossible to keep clean. It's just the nature of grout. Also, as our marble aged it began to have permanent stain around the edges for some reason. Nothing gets it clean! But hurray for us, we are finally taking out this messy tile in April 2025.
@@susananthony2366 Oh yes, our dirty grout, every time I look at it I feel I should re do it, but I honestly won’t, it’s too big an area and I’m just too disabled to do it, I must buy bigger rugs 😂😂❤
I find porcelain tiles are great for foot traffic but it's a Spanish type house so I would do brick color octagon tiles in the Entryway.

Personal aesthetic preferences vary, we weren’t wondering about that, just durability/maintenance from anyone with experience with marble. 1920’s architecture often features marble entries. But keep watching, like we said that’s only ONE option we’ve been considering!😊
yeah I absolutely agree those hexagon marble ones gives bathroom vibes. I thought it was an odd choice to consider. There are so many beautiful Spanish inspired entryway tiles and patterns to choose from if the cost of reclaiming vintage ones is out of the budget.

A marble tiles at the door will stain and go yellow you would be better with a ceramic tile.

We’ve thought about possibly going that. We also have a small section in the bathroom that we sealed with all the layers of history 😊
Please keep that original light fixture, it is so lovely. Also, go with that beautiful wood that is in the doorways, it really adds to the beauty of your wonderful home. As far as the marble in the entryway....I would think seriously about it. It can tend to be so much more easily injured compared to a good terra cotta. Kudos to you both....what an endeavor but truly a labor of love. What a great old house.
So happy the leaks are now fixed, shame all those issues weren't noticed or many ignored by the roofing company. House is coming along beautifully!

do not use marble very soft and u have to use ph neut. solution to clean the floor also have to have floors refinished to bring back the shine of marble . Beautiful floors allot of up keep
Use porcelain tile that looks like marble. Less expensive, no cracking and is not snot-slick like when marble gets wet. Mold can grow IN tile too, usually brown and you can't kill it.

The marble looks too bathroom.
Why aren't you considering a Spanish style tile that compliments your home. I'm sure there is salvaged tile you can find for such a small area!
I was thinking the same thing. Beautiful Spanish tile would add some color and also goes well with the style of the home.
We have considered that! We’ve gone to multiple salvage shops looking for something like that but haven’t found anything yet that we like going that route. We’re still considering all options. The funny thing about our house is that it looks very Spanish on the outside, but that architecture doesn’t continue into the inside of the house. We have one room with textured plaster, but no arched doorways, and our stairway and fireplace look more colonial than Spanish, etc. To be cohesive with the interior of our house, we’re leaning more 1920’s style with a nod to old Florida rather than being so strictly Spanish in our design choices. If we wanted generic we wouldn’t have gone through all we have to purchase, save, and dedicate over a year of our life and our savings to this project lol, we would have bought a generic house in a subdivision 😂 We did say that marble was just ONE option we’re considering 😉 We’ve also ordered samples from multiple online sources, so we’re definitely considering many creative options before we make a final decision.

I think you should go with a 1920s French ceramic tile pattern on the floor of your front doorway.
Love that suggestion! I originally was thinking I’d create a pattern in the tile, and definitely still considering that. We love the look of the marble too, as we’ve seen similar in multiple entryways of buildings from the same architectural era. A pattern/design is definitely still an option though! Thanks for the suggestion 👍

What you both have gotten done so far is looking so nice. The multi color wall in the bedroom why not poly over it and keep it as a reminder of the houses history.

I have old marble tiles in my kitchen and, with age, they have become more porous and difficult to keep clean. I'd go for ceramic (Spanish or Portuguese).
Kristin and Hal congratulations on the first big milestone! I see you are proceeding with intention. When you took possession of this house it was a disaster. Under super humid and hot conditions you guys had to clean out and sort everything. Then you had to stop the deterioration, remove the mold, get the leaks stopped and seal all the cracks outside. Then you got the interior comfortable and clean enough to work without ventilator masks! Air conditioner installed, yeah! So much progress, such hard work and there were setbacks along the way. Tremendous effort, and now you can focus on the interior refurbishing. Of course, restoring the wood trim and doors is the most beautiful option. May I suggest you start with the wood areas that really really matter, like the banister. Then, keep going down the priority list as long as you have the stomach for it. Since you are both so disciplined and determined, perhaps you'll do ALL the trim. Exciting times!

Restore and use the old light fixture. It is beautiful. my parents had a Mediterranean house in FL with lots of terracotta colored tiles, got boring. Use a nice brightly colored Mexican tile. Good luck. Looks great.

Aren’t they cute? We found out they were actually an addition to the house during a 1991 renovation.

So good to see all of the progress that you have made. Love love the original fixture, hope you keep that for the bathroom. I watched a special on marble from Italy and the project manager that was giving the tour talked about how easy it is to damage marble because it is considered "soft" surface. I love the idea of Spanish tiles for the entry to try and further the flavor of the casa. You all are doing so amazing. 🎉🎉🎉
It might be worth your time to check with people who do media blasting to strip your metal grates and other metal pieces. Not all blasting is sandblasting, and there are techniques now that will not damage the metal, but will remove all the old paint. It would save you an incredible amount of time and effort.

Looking so good! You've made GREAT progress. Please show us a tour of exactly where the pantry is. Don't recall seeing it before. And a tip--cement doesn't allow walls to breathe. So if original foundation is stone, avoid cement as it traps water inside the walls and will rot any wood supports. And finally a question- is there no need for insulation in the exterior DR wall where it had been leaking?
Hi Ginger. The pantry is between the kitchen and the basement. There is a hallway. Not ideal but all we have for now. The foundation is concrete block. We were told by an architect/builder friend of ours that the walls of this house are designed to breathe and advised against us using insulation.
The cleaned doors and hinges will be superb ❤
I love marble! I have it on all our bathroom floors and a high traffic mud room. I love the look of marble as it ages and patinas especially in a historic home because it's an appropriate material. That being said because your home is a 20s spanish style a hexagon terracotta tile would be amazing or even a Mediterranean glazed tile. But marble is the more natural option.
Hence our dilemma. Our porch floor is terracotta so we're leaning towards the marble. 😊
I liked the white trim in the living room. Also, you could glue some pretty cloth in the back of your medicine cabinet. It would look so cheery everything you opened the door.

It would look awesome to make sliding doors for the pantry . That way it’s covered, but easy to get to .

Back in what feels like a lifetime ago, my husband and I stripped the painted woodwork in our first home(1920's Craftsman). It was a HUGE job and the stripper we used was brutal in smell. I would recommend finding a place where you could bring your doors to have them 'dipped'. They have big 'vats' of stripper stuff. Drop a door in, pull it out, done. Then you can concentrate on staining! I admire your energy, hard work, determination and passion. I love seeing your progress! Cheering you on!!
Dipping doors to remove paint- I heard that this could cause the glue in old things to deteriorate along with the paint, so proceed with caution.

Oh, very nice a screen door to match, cool! Yeah - AC up and running, that has to be long awaited blessing, especially with the heat & humidity here in Florida. Good to see the leaks are under control, hope they stay that way. You guys have been very busy behind the scenes getting things done. There's a lot to do in this house to bring it back where you want it to be. All that scaping on the window and door frames is tons of work but it will look so good when it's completed. Nice to hear you'll be restoring the stairs and the little phone nook, which is adorable. Anxious to see the kitchen and cabinets you've selected. Nicely done!

Personally, I would lay some encaustic Spanish revival tiles for the entry area. Small enough space to do something really special that will add so much character and value to the house. It's all looking really great though and I think everything is going to come together for you quite quickly now.

In regards to the marble entry way tile, I love the concept of marble next to the wood floor.
May I suggest that you consider a herringbone pattern instead of the octagonal?

The reason I would not use the marble tiles in the entry is because they are very slippery when wet. You also have to seal them as they are porous and can stain.

Y'all have done so much work, looking great! Remember, that many houses in that era had inside trim work that was always meant to be painted, I think your house is one of those. It's probably yellow pine throughout the house.
Definitely use that original light fixture...maybe over the sink in the kitchen?
In keeping with the style of your home, the entry tile should echo that Spanish style with some colorful tile.
Thanks! And you’re right, most of the trim was originally painted and we’ve kept that in mind, and some was stained 😊 The wood in some rooms is beautiful though, so we’re considering all our options. Just like for the entryway, the marble is just one option we’re considering. We’ve thought about Spanish tile, but probably won’t go with that option, and we have a video coming up explaining why. We were mostly asking if any had experience with the maintenance/durability if they have marble in their home. Thanks for watching!
@@CicadaAndCo Marble stains very easily and is a pain in upkeep. I also found that it's very slippery when wet and I feel treacherous for a floor.

I cannot say it enough you guys are doing a fantastic job. One of the reasons why I keep saying things like this is home renovation is a very thankless job where it seems sometimes like you get one thing done and you end up having five other things that you got to do.
It may not be your color scheme but the original trim and the wall color that the house was was colors that I had painted my entire inside of my house that I purchased in 2004. I went to home Depot and I got one of their pamphlets in the painting section I believe it was Glidden paint and it had a color that was very similar to the trim color and the wall color that's all over the downstairs of your house. I really liked it and I thought it gave a warmth to my house was more contemporary and it had originally tan tile floors. I found that that color scheme neutralized and also blended in an awful lot of original features of my house that were not necessarily my taste.

I think I would do the hydronic cement on all the windows to stop more leaks . That was a good idea .

When people were telling you that your roof was not meant to walk on, they did not mean the roof in general as its original purpose, they were talking about the Roll Roofing that the roof company placed on the roof. it was the wrong application from the beginning and Roll Roofing is not meant for foot traffic. Sure, you can walk on any roof if you are doing cleaning or repairs but Im sure you plan on using your roof way more than that.

Marble stains easily. And it absorbs water, therefore you will have water staining.

We have marble tiles in our entrance, hallway and kitchen. It is very slippery when wet. I would love to change it but it's too expensive 😫 also the mosaic you like ( which is lovely) will have a lot of grout lines, you'll be cleaning it constantly.

I'm voting for scraping all the trim. While more work, I think you will be so glad you did it in the long run. Honestly, if you did paint, I could see you deciding down the road to scrape it anyway so then that is double work. :) It's also something that can be worked on when you have time and doesn't look bad in the in between stages. It's a character trait that works while you go. Also, I love the framing from the dining to kitchen. Are you going to repurpose that? It's such a unique feature.

The Roofing company should have had that Leak Fixed a long time ago, but at least the Owner came to assess the issue and got it Fixed for ya.

Wow, so happy for you getting that main roof leak fixed, that’s got to feel good. Marble in the main entryway is a great classy look. It will hold up well especially since it’s not your primary entryway. Also like the type of tile that matches other places in the house. I’m a sucker for finished wood over painting so that’s my vote, but many places/rooms paint is a much better option maintenance wise. Keep up the good work Clint wait to see the finished product.

Oh your home looks so good! It's coming right along. Regarding the trim. I love the natural wood also. In for a penny in for a pound. Just take your time with it. Maybe keep that small bedroom wall area as another accent/tribute wall like the plan for that bathroom. Question. Down the road will you do a rooftop retreat out there. I could see a small Cafe table type deal. Great for sunset cocktails🍸 🍻. Keep up the good work
