  • @hawkmore

    I'd just like to say...I've been watching a LOT of Critical Role lately, I'm actually caught up which I never thought would happen.
    Now, while I love Critical Role, I think watching it actively makes me a WORSE DM. Now, I have an amazing group and I'm very proud of our game. All our players are good at and enjoy Roleplay, we have been playing for about 5 months going from levels 3-6, and I think our best session was actually just a day spent shopping in the large town they got to, MOST OF WHICH I had to ad-lib, having only written down names of shops and names of businesses. I think I've turned into a pretty great DM by most standards.
    However, I think due to the Nature of Matt Mercer NEVER showing what's going on behind the screen and making it SEEM like he's always prepared for absolutely everything..I think watching him actually makes me nervous. It makes me second-guess myself and whenever I'm bingeing a lot of Critical Role I can tell that my D&D sessions are noticably worse, I'm just off my game.
    You are my antidote, Matt Colville. I don't know what it is...But I feel inspired so easily listening to you. It all just feels easy again. I will never forget your advice on the first Running the Game video you made where you said "You might not know what you're doing and you might not do a good job, but that's okay because you're going to have fun anyways. Your players are going to have fun learning with you and they aren't going to notice or care. It's just going to be fun". And you're right. It always is fun.
    I've got an idea for a tower built underground that has been excavated by a mining crew that stumbled into it, and when they get inside it is a portal leading to the Elemental Plane of Earth. I've made absolutely no progress in two weeks on it. None of my ideas of how to make this idea a reality seem good enough.
    And even though this video and topic itself doesn't help with this at all...Somehow, you still do. Somehow, by the end of this video I feel inspired and I know what I'm going to do. I'm not nervous it isn't going to be good enough. I'm not worried if it's not going to be fun...I know it'll be fun. We have a great group.
    Thanks, Matt. You are my greatest source of inspiration and you are indirectly helping create a lot of fun and some amazing memories for my friends and I before we all finish University. We're going to remember these sessions forever, and without you, it just wouldn't be the same.

      I know he does some pre-work, like most DM's do. But i think it was a episode of that dnd guides he did way back when where he showed his set up once. Some notes behind the dm's screen and he talks about having just a sheet of printed out names that he will pull from and then make sure to write down thats who this random npc is now. While Matt is a great DM he is only human and someone who has been at it for a very long time. He fucks up as well....like most people. lol

      I was with Judge in the time. I'm pretty sure that the angel that she talked to on the Rossos Yellow (forgive spelling) said exactly the same thing as the changeling "Can we trust the alien?" so given as judge was there I thought it was a hint you were giving to Anna hoping she'd pick up on it.

    • @flintironstag7674
      @flintironstag7674 5 років тому

      Just to let you know, if you need to build a changeling again: If you look up the Unearthed Arcana article for the most recent Races of Eberron, they create a Changeling race in there. For this case, you'd still have to customize it, but it'll save you having to sift through a bunch of different monsters and basically scrap it together from something else.

    Although it was disappointing not to have that whole identity crisis, it was satisfying to see that plot cliche subverted by Judge and Slim's decisive violence. Fresh take!

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 4 роки тому +9

      I like to see it as the Changeling's hubris biting it in the butt. It assumed that the members of the Chain would hesitate to attack members of their own. That it would take much more sowing of discontent before they would turn on each other. It could not conceive that both Judge and Slim were willing to act on a hunch at the drop of a hat. That they could act with lethal decisiveness, even against their own.
      The Changeling thought it knew the Chain. It was wrong, and paid the final price.

      Those are great for when I want to sit down to watch an episode. But that doesn't happen to often. Like I mentioned in my post they are short enough to get you up to speed but not long enough where you are really invested and following the story. That is why I find Matt's 30-60 minute diaries to be perfect. Thank you all the same regardless.

    It doesn't make a whole lot of sense why it would travel to the command deck, but you could fluff it as a cargo elevator for moving goods.
    And Mindflayers could have larger slaves, which necessitates larger spaces.
    Or it could be the main elevator, which means it's larger than the rest of them.
    Verisimilitude restored! (Sort of)

    • @KalonOrdona2
      @KalonOrdona2 5 років тому +5

      I was thinking the samw thing! Cargo and slaves, they'll very often be transporting more people.
      Also even if it were only 10x10 you can still squeeze, I would think. Real life elevators can fit like 15 people.

  • @Ulrican414
    @Ulrican414 5 років тому +29

    I don't think you need to worry about the elevator being too big, because it's an alien mindflayer ship so it seems reasonable that the mindflayers would need an abnormally large elevator to accommodate large (D&D size large) thralls that they most likely accumulated in the ship.

    • @666Hand
      @666Hand 5 років тому

      Ulrican414 and maybe it can be used as a cargo elevator. If you have an actual map of the ship, you might even describe it as dimensionally transcendental (like a bag of holding or Dr Who’s Tardis)

    • @aqacefan
      @aqacefan 3 місяці тому

      There are also real world precedents for large elevators, such as the ones present in hospitals that can accommodate a bed and several passengers. On a grander scale, look no further than the lift in The Haunted Mansion. Either way, it’s reasonable to expect that elevators of adequate size would exist in the Somnium Tenebris.

    I didn't mind the super sized elevator. Seeing as they were inside a living creature, I imagined the "elevator" functioning like a kind of vacuole in an ameoba in phagocytosis. When the "elevator" is called, the ship can sense how many creatures are standing around the entrance and stretches the "elevator" to accomodate the creatures.

    • @agustinvenegas5238
      @agustinvenegas5238 Рік тому +1

      I thought it was a cargo lift, those tend to be huge, and it makes sense that there would be one inside a ship

      Yes, I am years late to this discussion.
      6 normal sized people can absolutely fit into even a 10x10 elevator with no problems. Just because you occupy a 5x5 square in combat doesn't mean fill that whole space. That's rigid thinking caused by grided combat rules.
      This is absolutely a case where it's appropriate to throw out the rules in the name of verisimilitude. Perhaps impose disadvantage to combat rolls for cramped quarters to acknowledge the situation and go full theater of the mind for combat.
      Source: I am a normal sized human who has comfortably ridden in an elevator with greater than 6 people. Comfortably.

Your advice and insights have helped me and made my game better.

    Talking about your regrets w/r/t the elevator, and then also how you felt a bit worried and low when the changeling escaped into the crowd and the party was starting to become frustrated...
    all of that was great. It's really helpful to hear you talk about that and why I come to these videos. I mean, I also love celebrating the triumphs with you. But for my own selfish reasons hearing you talk about the things you struggle with makes me feel better about my own ability and my own doubts. Just wanted to throw some positive reinforcement at you regarding that.

      I find it interesting what things he celebrates. I thought the changeling being caught would have been frustrating, but he celebrated it! He knew ahead of time that he was speaking as the changeling and then he knew Judge is the type of character to make these decisions!

    I think the problem with the elevator is a "The map is not the territory" problem. In combat, you can't end your movement/turn in someone else's space. But in RL you can definitely do that. You could, for example, just explain that it was a tight fit and everyone had to squeeze into the elevator when riding it up and down to then later map it in smaller dimensions.

    Fear takes some getting used to but once you get the hang of it as a DM you can use it as part of a puzzle on a boss encounter, including multiple places to get out of los and managing minions from cutting off the path to the ones you want becomes a meta encounter for your players. This does require a group that is up for encounters like that.

    One note for the Elevator size: A creature can fit into a space one size category smaller than they are, they just can't fight there and it's difficult terrain, so half movement speed. So the group could probably all still pile in, but it would have hampered them coming out of it, unless you shrink it further than 10x10 (for example).

    I think another option for the elevator would be to have the conditions be cramped, they would effectively be inside one another's combat space and be disadvantaged on their attacks and maybe attacks would have advantage on them. I'm not sure off the top of my head if 5e covers occupying the same square(iirc the only rules for 5e is that you can't willingly do it... in combat). After all, in reality, a few people can stand on a 5-foot square.

      Yeah basically you just can't swing a weapon in a crowded elevator. It would be great for them to all cram into the elevator, ride down, and then as they all pile out to find that one of them is dead with a dagger in their back, pass out the "you are not the changeling" cards, go from there. King still should have revivify, so that wouldn't be a big problem.

    The 5 foot for pc/npc is for battle. Having everyone fit in the elevator makes sense. you just tell them that any weapon larger than a dagger simply can't be used and every action or movement creates an attack of opportunity. Maybe have every missed attack hit someone. These could make that type of combat very interesting.

  • @krazeiskwirl
    @krazeiskwirl 5 років тому

    17:00 10ft x 10ft is already a very large elevator, and I personally would say that it could easily fit 10-15 humanoids. Characters don't always have to take up an entire 5ft square; "Whether a creature is a friend or an enemy, you can’t willingly end your move in its space" but out of combat, there are no turns to end.

  • @JPBennett
    @JPBennett 5 років тому +2

    About the elevator... Thinking about how many people cram into elevators in the real world, they probably legit should have fit. Maybe we need house rules for combat in super cramped spaces. Would have been interesting if the halfling rogue could attack normally while the players had some severe disadvantage due to being squashed in.

Particularly as Misty Step is a "teleportation" they aren't getting closer to the source of fear in the process and it takes their action. He would still have to use his movement to run, but could then attempt to make the save and start getting back into the battle the next round. He likely still wouldn't have done any attacks, but would have been doing something and having an influence on his character's actions.

    16:22 Combat spaces are 5'x5', but you don't need that much space to just stand there. The "Squeezing into a smaller space" rules on page 192 of the 5e PHB cover it. A creature can fit into the same space as a creature one size smaller, but while doing so they have to spend double movement, and they have disadvantage on all attack rolls and dexterity saving throws. Attacks on a creature that's currently squeezing also gain advantage. So given that they would normally occupy 7 squares (Judge, King, Boots, Slim, 2x for Big Cat but 0x for Copper because he's on Big Cat, and finally Angel) You could have instead made the elevator 10'x10' and made everyone squeeze. While squeezing you could fit 16 medium creatures into a 10'x10' square.
    On the other hand, a ship _would_ have at least one cargo elevator, which tend to be pretty big.

  • @freddykingofturtles
    @freddykingofturtles 3 роки тому

    I mean, a ship with an elevator might be very large, for large cargo loads, moving cannons, large soldier groups, or even monsters the mindlfayers are find of using.
    It is an industrial/military elevator after all.

    While you're not wrong, it only forces a round or two of running, and it doesnt stop them having actions or being useful, albeit in a reduced fashion. Failure to do so is on the player, and occasionally the gm. Also, Phil was robbed. Should have been able to misty step out of the room, its a bonus action, right?

      It didn't "kill itself" kill itself, it sliced open a large artery/organ it formed in its neck and turned off its regeneration. While it wasn't "dead" dead, it was still a huge gamble if King didn't take the bait, since it was prone and not regenerating. At least, that's my explanation/headcanon.

    SO i backed the kickstarter because i wanted the book and dragon mini and because i loved your running the game videos. But i was sceptical about the campaign. I like critical role but i cant keep up with watching it week to week, i get bored or would prefer doing other things than watching them every week and the same is even more true for other streams of people running their dnd games.
    That being said I haven't have any issues what so ever in keep up with your Campaign and i am loving every week i get to watch. There is just something about it that feels to me like i am more invested in the characters and the story, and i enjoy watching your players role playing their characters. Also these campaign diaries help me alot as a new DM see how you've been doing things and it gives me many ideas for how to run my own thing. I'm glad the kickstarter went well enough for this to be a thing.

    5 adults is usually the standard for most modern elevators I've been in. A large ship like the one described, would at the very least have multiple 5 people elevators which means they could all be in one and Big Cat in another and they would all arrive at the same time. Have you ever seen a cruise ship with only one small elevator? 2 elevators for 5 people each is the minimum that would make sense for a somewhat busy area of the ship. Seeing how there's a banquet hall on the officer's deck and another one below, goods would be transferred up and down all the time. Plus slaves would die and they'd have to transfer their bodies to feed them to the ship. I imagine their elevators would have the size of hospital, airport or cargo elevators which means everyone would fit in perfectly, Big Cat included.
    Fitting the entirety of a D&D party in a single elevator is entirely possible. Even if the party is 5 goliaths, they'd still manage to uncomfortably squeeze in a normal elevator. So if a GM insisted that there's no way for everyone to fit and we absolutely have to split the party, I would suspect he only insists because he plans a surprise attack on half the party, which would only bring metagaming discussions about which half will be the one that gets attacked and how to split the party so we won't die. I think forcing the party to split with cheap narrative tricks breaks the immersion and any "surprise" attack that happens because of this is never truly surprising.

  • @HallowedError
    @HallowedError 5 років тому +1

    Does 5E not have any squeeze rules at all? More than one humanoid can fit in a 5x5 square when not using that space for battle. Unless you just didn't want to deal with those sort of rules?

    About the topic of player habilities vs vilain habilities
    Most of the time I agree with you Matt, but wanted just to note that there are circunstances where pcs and enemies have the same habilities. Like when you face a group of mercenaries and they unleash fireballs and hunters marks because these are common spells. Furthermore using an unusual spell that your player loves to abuse can create that moment of "oh oh" that many players dread or crave
    Keep doing the amazing work, you guys até great

    Agreed about the word usage/context clues in 5e. 5e has it's own slew of problems (as many if not more than 4e in my opinion) but the most irksome one for me is the constant searching and flipping back and forth. The natural language makes it read smoothly but it makes figuring out the crunch of the mechanics a serious pain at times.
