Indigenous People Don’t Have a Voice (Lie)

- The Indigenous Voice to Parliament, you know, the referendum that happened more than seven months ago. I thought that was over with? No, the ABC are keeping it alive by indoctrinating your children through their Behind the News children’s program that is broadcast into many classrooms around Australia! “Let’s talk about the referendum”. Noting, this was only published a few days ago, May 29th. “Australia Said ‘No’. What’s Next?” “No matter what, the fight for justice and equality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people has to continue.” Although, UA-cam did put a notice (warning?) on the video stating, “ABC is an Australian public broadcast service”, so that was kind of them, letting us know that there may be government influence involved here.
Here are some quotes from the segment from the children: “It should have been ‘Yes’, because that could have been real change.”; “It’s the one country that hasn’t, like, have their community have a say, like, with their own parliament.” Look, just to be clear, I’m not teasing or blaming the children here. They’re obviously just repeating what the adults told them. “Some mobs in South Australia I know, none of them voted, because they didn’t get told about it.”; “As Aboriginal, we didn’t actually have a say in it… they (non-Indigenous people) had the say. They chose our decisions for us.”; “Australia isn’t, like, a perfect country. A lot of racism goes on.”; “I have really close friends, their families had opinions, but I became almost victim to their opinion, because of me being Aboriginal.”; “I think that we should just keep on moving forward and wait till the next referendum to try to change our decision.” Well, I hate to tell you mate, there probably won’t be another referendum, well, not anytime soon. It would be political suicide for any party to try to push this again.
But the most telling comment, which is one that is bandied about a lot, was from this little girl: “The next referendum, I hope it’s a ‘Yes’, so then us mob can finally have a voice.”
As I said, I’m not here to blame the children, but the irony is that for people who apparently don’t have a voice, their voice is being broadcast to every single classroom across the country, and of course, over the internet. The whole, Aboriginal people don’t have a voice, is a lie. If anybody honestly believes that Aboriginal people don’t have a voice, well that means Australians don’t have a voice. We’re all equal under the law in Australia. We either all have a voice, or none of us have a voice. I think it’s the former. We all have a voice already. Any person can go to their local member of parliament, or council member, and make a complaint or have a chat about any issue they like. Or, anybody could go online, like I’m doing now, and make a video about something they’re concerned about. The only thing you need is the will, and an internet connection, which I’m sure all these schools have access to.
If some Aboriginal people honestly believe they don’t have a voice, rather than try to con them into believing that they need some kind of special Indigenous Voice body in the Parliament, why not teach them how to approach their local MP, how to shoot off an email voicing their concerns, how to arrange a meeting with a local councillor? Your voice can be heard, you just to need to make it happen. Nothing is stopping you. Instead of teaching children to believe in fanciful Voice bodies that will probably never exist in their lifetime, perhaps we should teach them how to make their voice known. Oh no, but BTN want to propagate this myth that Aboriginal people don’t have a voice, and they’re teaching your children this.
There’s a bit of hope though. As research for this video, I asked my son if they watch Behind the News at school (he’s in early high school), and he told me they watch it every week. I asked him what he thought of the latest episode, and he just said, “I don’t know, I didn’t watch it. The teacher puts it on and plays on his phone, while the rest of us just have a chat. The teacher doesn’t care.”; Note, this is a fairly reputable school. Although the teachers are forced to play BTN, it doesn’t seem like they care if the children watch it or not. My son stopped watching in Grade 6 when they started talking about transgender issues, not in a bigoted way, but rather, as he said “BTN has become so boring.” Of course it has! When they try to preach their views to their audience, their audience just tune out. Nobody likes to be preached to, especially teenage children.
I think this is a case of the ABC realising that the adults aren’t listening anymore, so instead they’re trying to target our children. Is this a children’s news program, or state-sponsored propaganda?

I think this would be a wonderful opportunity to pause for a moment and give thanks for the great contributions made by the Aboriginal community to our society. Their peaceful and generous natures make them ideal neighbours, not to mention their exceptional family values and tight knit parenting skills unrivalled by any other culture. Their commitment to academic excellence enriches our schools and serves as an example to all who hope to achieve prominence as a people. Real estate values are fuelled by the mix of our indigenous brothers and sisters into an area due to the caring and respectful nature of their communities, all of which are shining examples of their achievements garnered through enthusiasm for self-improvement and hard work combined with their joyful, self-reliant can-do spirits. Without their industrious and creative drive, kind natures, their stunning ability to police themselves and raise their children to be educated adults and people of substance, importance and inherent worth, we would most undoubtedly be poorer as a nation. Australia says thank you.

Indigenous Australians are 3.8% of the population and for many years the Federal government has allocated 35 to 45 billion dollars per year in Closing the Gap policy. There's very little palpable improvement and plenty of contractor/tender rorting and fundamentally no checks and balances or accountability. The gravy train rolls on. 😢😮

ABC should be charged with the misappropriation of taxpayers funds.
Sadly, if it hasn't happened by now, it never will. Looking at some of the things the public sector waste money on makes me ill. These "representatives" should be required to add some of their own assets into the mix - perhaps if their own money was involved, they might have some more consideration for taxpayers' funds. Doubtful.
I wonder what would happen if the ABC weren’t a government funded. The Guardian and Crikey exist, so they wouldn’t just disappear, but much of the content would go.

The most hilarious thing during the voice referendum was the Indigenous Affairs minister (BTW I am indigenous) in a majority labour government saying that she does not have a voice. Aboriginals are about 3% of the population but about 4% of members of parliament claim to be indigenous so they already have a proportionally greater say than non-indigenous Australians. The vast majority voted against the Voice, and by extension against the (26 page) Uluṟu statement (which was constantly put forward by the yes campaign as the basis of the referendum, so they cannot now cry foul. The vote was no and that should be the end to it in perpetuity.

Let's start by determining just who is really aboriginal. There are too many "Identifiers" who are mostly of non-aboriginal ancestry with their hands out and all they do is take focus and funds away from those who really need help. Aboriginals needs in fact are already over represented in parliament and in our bureaucracy and the level of funding is mind-boggling for just 3.8% (which includes all the ring-ins), most of which seems to go missing and no-one is willing to do an audit in case they are labelled as being racist.

I have never heard of this from the Darling Downs. We had a giraffe talk to us about, the body's organs, being fat, and the effects of drugs tho.
I remember 60 or so of us sitting on the floor of the "multi-purpose" room at primary school watching BTN on a 21" CRT TV on the classic wheeled stand! It was actually quite interesting then, although we were well and truly past its age bracket by high school and it was certainly not forced on us then. Sounds like they should change the name to BTP in this era.
As a teacher, I used to like BTN. Now I am watching it with my students in a remote community. Get back to actual fact reporting on topics that is of interest to senior primary students. They don't need to be mislead. It's not right to use kids as puppets for other kids - and not be true. Those kids need a better teacher.

Thanks for being the voice of reason. I'm sick of aboriginals and the news media shouting aboriginals don't have a voice when in fact they do. Every sports code almost in Australia has welcome to country during an event, schools have welcome to country, workplaces definitely get their workers to listen to it. Iff only aboriginals put as much effort into getting jobs and contributing to society rather than relying on government donations and apologies over and over again. I still say if it weren't the British that landed on Aussie shores it could have been Germany, China, Russia.
Indigenous people and issues now dominate about 50% of ABC radio air time. Considering they comprise just 4% of the population they have a louder voice than any other group.
Exactly, I read the close the gap document and noticed there are gaps that indigenous people have to close themselves. Ironically it’s the problem of systemic racism and not the culture and practices of the group themselves.
The only time I watched abc was back in the 90's on Friday arvos when they had an awesome lineup of kids shows. Best start to my weekend off school
Does anyone remember the time 'their flag' was sold to an American corporation by the copyright owner, an aboriginal man? All of a sudden people and companies using the flag as a logo were being asked to stop or pay for copyright. Somehow the majority of white folk in government managed to secure it back on behalf of the native ancestry people of Australia.
I am not sure wether the artist got to keep the millions of dollars or not but in my humble opinion there should be one flag that represents our country and having lived here for all of this lifetime I enjoy the view of the southern cross.
