Jeff, you’re an impact on a slew of gardeners, old hands and new inexperienced wanna be gardeners. Any benefits you receive are well deserved and due. Thank you much.
Thanks Jim, that means a lot! Appreciated it buddy!
I'm so glad I save seeds every year, I only need to buy if I want to try something new
Me too! Now more than ever!
I've sown about 500 starter pots so far and spent $6 on seeds, all for new varieties. The rest are from last year's harvest. Last year I spent $0 and gave away lots of seeds. Don't ya wish you could do that with microwave ovens, washing machines, and cars? Well, if you're handy with repairs you almost can.
Saving seeds has become my MISSION the last 5 years or so! 🙂
This will be my first time to try starting from seeds indoors so thanks for the tips.
Best of luck Margaret!
Insane isn’t it, we are (gardeners) the new cash cow crop 😢😢. I’m buying heirloom where possible and saving as much as I can. Happy gardening Jeff, Ali 🥶👩🌾🇨🇦
1000%. The time to seed save is now, no question Ali!
Excellent points, Jeff. I find seed and transplant swapping with friends is also way to keep costs down.
~ Sandra
Love it Sandra... We all need to do more things like that!
Just the video I was after! I’ve smashed that thumbs up button!
Thanks so much Brad! 🙂
Glad to see you back!Love your channel and love how you explain everything so well! Happy Gardening!😀
Thanks Sonya! Hope all is well, best of luck this year!
Thanks for the heads up
Cheers Hilda! 🙂
Ran across your channel. Best day ever! I’m a subscriber for sure. Your style of video making, teaching, sharing the good and the bad, kept me watching till the end. I’m not a new gardener by any means but learned a few new things and thoroughly enjoyed your video. The gardener community is amazing. Thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge. I’m a fan😊
Thanks so much Kelly, that means a lot! Its ALWAYS great to have experienced growers on board this journey! 🙂
Thanks for the heads up with seed starting! Really appreciate your videos. Already realized that I overwatered my first tray of the year. More trays to come!
Thanks Wayne! What you most excited about planting this year?
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms onions from seeds both purple, yellow and spring bunching. Haven't ever tried, always bulbs. Your upbeat attitude is helpful! Thanks! That's the tray I overwatered, hadn't put seeds in yet. Just getting started with seeding. Better to have enough moisture in the soil mix before putting in trays??
Simply a great tutorial!
Thanks, appreciate you checking it out!
I bought some seeds this week, to start this weekend, here in Maastricht (Netherlands). I also encountered prices here that rose a lot. I was thinking I had some high premium seeds of exotic variants, but no. Unbelievable. It seems it is not only here, since you too noticed this. Therefor better to collect seeds from some plants, so you can use them next year.
I now am battling my softnacks. They all are hanging, sopil is moist though. I took them inside, behind the glass. Hope they make it.
Thank you for a great video!!!🎉😊
Cheers Laura, happy Friday! 🙂
Amazing video with lots of helpful tips. Beginner gardener here... I'll be starting my 3rd year of gardening so hopefully these tips will help me have a more successful year. Thanks so much!
Great video as usual. I think I might have my heat mat too warm. Some of my peppers have germinated but my tomatoes are slow to germinate. I'm going to check out the temperature right away. Thanks for sharing.
Definitely give it a look Shirley. Stick a towel or even a piece of wood in between and that will drop the temperatures if they are too warm.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Thanks for the suggestions. I have a cheap heat mat without a thermostat. I measured the temperature under the seed tray with a meat thermometer. If it was any where near correct, it was over 90 degrees. I turned the dial way down and it is now around 80 degrees. I'm going to keep checking, I might just order me a new one with a thermostat. Thanks again for your help.😊
This is my first time starting with seeds 😊
I noticed the increased prices for seeds, so I try to keep last year's seeds in reserve when possible.
The only seeds I bought this year that dropped in price, more seeds in package were Paprik peppers.
UBC has an eco seed site for locally grown seeds, they're reasonably priced.
I just got the Paprik seeds down, last frost is end of March. (Sorta)
Lettuce is down, and I might get kohlrabi done this weekend. Sweet peas are going in on the weekend, protected from wind, close to a wall, full sun. They should be good.
This stuff is addictive. 🤣
you can buy plants with suckers and clone them. im doing sweet potatoes!
Strawberries like that too!
Yes the price of seeds are crazy. I have always kept my own as much as I could. But as a plant growing lover. Yes I love to grow, have done it from age 7 and we'll say I'm over 50. I have to grow something I've never grown before or in a long time since. And have to buy seeds. Wow it's crazy we have to start trading our seeds with other growers. That would improve the price if enough of us do it. Great video
Hi, I really like your videos, I was able to get most of my seeds for £1 from D.T. Brown seeds
One question, do you recommend watering from the bottom tray?
I always do yeah.... Otherwise you just blast the seeds and soil everywhere. :-)
Awesome video!
WCS are way too expensive. I only pick a few varieties from them. I also wait until seed companies have their fall sale on seeds and get extra seeds I want for 1/2 off.
So true Barb. Buying at the end of the year is almost as good as saving your own. So many deals once "gardening fever" has worn off! 🙂
When I started gardening, I decided I would learn to acclimate plants to where we are (Andes at almost 10,000 feet) and save seeds. It has been awesome! Microgreens, sprouts, tubers, roots, greens and fruits.
Awesome! More people need to do this.
Hi Jeff...i love & shared this video. Have u ever tried plain clay kitty litter in olace of VERMICULITE?
I started several types of pepper seeds in one tray. One type of pepper seed germinated way before the others (sadly some haven't germinated). The ones that germinated first grew leggy while I was waiting for the others to germinate. Some of the others barely reached the surface when I removed them from the heat and put under grow lights. How do I save the leggy seedlings?
What is your ratio of coconut coir, manure and vermiculite for the seed starting mix?
50/50....then add perlite and vermiculite as you see fit
Are heat mats needed when starting from seed? I'm in central Florida mostly sunny in this area.
Hey Jeff I'm trying to find a distributor who ships to ontario for the west coast seaweed extract you show in the video. Do you know how I can get Mt hands on this ?
Jeff had you had any luck using anything other than toxic products to get rid of fungus knatts? First time ever got them is this season☹️
I'm converting the laundry room in my garage (no longer a laundry room) into a seed starting/grow room and I have a very small spare humidifier that I'm not doing anything with. If I put the little humidifier in there what is the best humidity percentage for the first 1 - 2 months of a tomato and pepper plant's life?
Sounds promising! You don't really need a humidifier though. Tomatoes and peppers are tropical but they don't require any special humidity settings. Just temperature and light are important.
I’ve started Kelsae variety onions from seed. I have a grow light on them. How many hours of light should they get per day? Your video mentioned that if you’re growing onions, the light requirement is different. Also, when do you take the plastic lids off when growing veggies from seed?
Can I use a bodies heater pad to keep seeds warm 😅
I don't understand what is meant by moist. I used jiffy seed starting mix and the top always felt moist to me for a week or more. This after bottom watering. But my seeds didn't germinate. Should I water even though the top still feels 'moist'?
Getting off my butt and making sure my seeds are moist enough.
6$ for 10 seeds O_O
It's 50c-1$ in Europe depending on variety of tomato.
Dang, when's the next boat to Europe!?
It's because they are so easy to steal. I'm sure the companies aren't making THAT much profit, so they have to up the price now cause of people like me 😁.
Last 3 seasons combined, I stole about $500 worth of seeds, and looks like I'm going to have to do the same this year with those prices... ughhh
@@shirleyk623 girl, I have 7000 sq ft of garden space to fill. That's a lot of seeds and with the prices of seeds that we're seeing now, that's a lot of money. You can fit 10 packets in a pocket easy so you have 20 packets in the front 20 packets in the back and that's about $200 saved right there. You have to have very good sleight of hand though so I wouldn't recommend it to beginners. You have to be a seasoned Thief to pull off a heist like that 😎
@@PolishEddie92 When you get caught you'll be wishing you paid for those seeds. I'll bet all the money problems you're going to encounter will far outweigh the money you saved in purchasing them. I'm not going to say good luck because in my opinion you are part of the reason the prices go up. Remember surveillance cameras are everywhere.
Ummmm........
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I'm obviously joking. At least I thought it was obvious 🤣
@@PolishEddie92 lol..... You had me fooled!!
@polisheddie4698. Seriously 😳😳😳?
LOL
Excellent video all info no fluff plus a reminder 😊
Thanks William... That's the goal!
Thanks Jeff! You got me started with green onions. Now I've got 4 allium varieties, 2 kinds of tomatoes, peppers, (& Sweet potatoes. I'm starting a bed of 'fartichokes' & trying out growing zukes & lentils this year!Best wishes from down here in South Florida!
I paid about 40%more for seeds this year and more than I've ever paid for shipping. I really enjoy your channel!
I hear you on that one. At the end of summer, I'm really going to be looking for deals on all the leftovers.
Jeff you are correct on the pricing. Fortunately for me and my community the local garden club had a seed exchange today. Ten packs of seeds for the $10. entry fee. Went with a neighbor and we now have twenty varieties plus the seeds we saved from this last year. Also check with the local Dollar Stores for inexpensive "run of the mill" common seeds. I can't wait to begin this year. Our outdoor planting time here in the Mother Lode starts around Mothers Day. Thanks for your help
That's so awesome Perry! How many people are in the exchange?
`Hello, very nice👍👍

Thank you, Jeff ❤
Cheers! Enjoy the weekend!
Modern grow lights have really helped my success even in a sunny window
I love your voice. It’s very soothing to me.
Absolutely love the info. Your videos are the best. Can’t wait until it starts getting a little warmer here. ❤️🪴🤞
Thanks Brandy!! Hope all is well out your way! 🙂
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms all is well expected 4 in of snow by early morning. lol 😂
@@brandywvstrong9673 good grief, say you're just joking??!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms well as of now they were incorrect. Only maybe 2 or so inches. Should be all gone by Monday.
@@brandywvstrong9673 still.... Come on spring already! Lol
